Brimstone cladding at Sylva Centre Grain Store

Vastern Timber

The Grain Store was transformed with Brimstone cladding and joinery. The renovation of an old grain store at the Sylva Centre provides a vast new workspace for woodworking businesses and skills training. The front elevation is clad in Brimstone, Vastern Timber’s innovative range of thermally modified British hardwoods, made of poplar, ash and sycamore. This is the first commercial project incorporating Brimstone joinery. Windows & doors made of Brimstone Ash were produced by George Barnsdale. Vastern Timber's aim to promote under- utilised British timber aligns perfectly with the Sylva Centre goal of ‘helping trees and people grow together’.

Brimstone ash cladding chosen for passivhaus development

Vastern Timber

As an experienced project manager, Alex has considerable experience of timber frame projects. His design was for a 3000sq-ft house built to passivhaus standards. The design also featured extensive exterior cladding. Sustainability became an increasing focus as the project progressed. It was this focus that led to the use of Brimstone ash as Alex felt uncomfortable specifying alternatives that were sourced and transported vast distances. In total, 3000 linear metres of Brimstone were used . “I like the grain of Brimstone,” explains Alex Clifford. “The alternative I originally considered had straight grain, but I wanted something more patterned and interesting.”

Cedar cladding for Powers House

Vastern Timber

Powers House in Devon features cedar cladding, Brimstone ash decking along with stone walling and a pitched Zinc roof. Camillin Denny Design chose Canadian Red cedar from for the external cladding; specifically 95mm x 20mm boards with half lap detail. For the extensive decking around the building they chose Brimstone ash. As Mark Camillin explains “We’ve used cedar previously because we love the way it looks and the way it gradually fades. We wanted the building to be fully clad and we chose a narrower 95mm half-lap board to give us the texture of the shadow gap."

Cedar cladding, the ideal choice for luxury eco-home in Dorset

Vastern Timber

Fir view is a new-build luxury eco-house set in a wooded area on the Devon Dorset border. Architects Mark Camillin and Liam Denny had a vision for a contemporary design that blended sympathetically with the area of natural beauty within which the plot is set. Getting the exterior facade right was of great importance to them and the authorities and all parties settled on cedar cladding as the ideal option. Mark and Liam decided on vertical halflap cladding and selected our air dried Canadian cedar cladding because of the lack of knots and stability.

Hardwood Timber Tiles - Tunbridge Wells

Wallbarn Ltd

This project involved a penthouse with a huge roof terrace. The existing deck was dilapidated and needed complete replacement. The existing decking needed to be lifted, cut up and removed. The terrace was jet-washed and sealed. Using ipe tiles on top of adjustable pedestals keeps the tiles out of standing water and creates space underneath for cables, etc. Rooftop terraces are difficult to access. 500x500mm timber tiles are much easier to manually handle and transport than long plank decking. The tiles aren’t fixed to the pedestals, making them future-proofed.

After removing the old render ProWall rainscreen was installed. This included new battening, an advanced render carrier board, and ventilation beads under the soffits and at the base.

Oakworth Homes Timber Frame use 9mm Magply in Timber Frame Construction.

Oakworth design team recommends the use of Magply whenever the site survey and pre-contract assessment identifies a specific risk to adjacent properties in the event of a fire. The Magply boards also offer resistance to racking loads, both as part of the completed structure and during the installation process. Oakworth Production staff discovered that it not only cuts better, but the boards are not prone to cracking or splitting with the pressurised nail guns. It comes down to engineering and the design and we will always factor in the safety considerations, advising clients according on Magply as an option.

Timber Framed Self Build House, St. Albans

CDI Innovative Construction Materials Ltd

There are 2 ways of installing Lewis Deck in timber frame structures. Firstly is to fix the Lewis Deck down and lose acoustic performance or the second way is to fix a timber deck on top of the timber joists. "My Hotel in Bucharest..." timber tiles create a treasure chest

Wallbarn Ltd

We were contacted by a customer in Bucharest trying to source our Ipe Timber Tiles. He was concerned about durability as Romania has extremes of hot and cold, and torrential rainfall. We reassured him that even with a minimum gap drainage would be sufficient and the suspended tiles system would ensure longevity. He selected the Ipe timber tiles mounted onto fixed height 14mm Plastic Pad. To protect against the extreme weather the tiles were then treated with a generic wood preserve on site, giving them a rich, luxurious finish and producing the "treasure chest" George Ezra would be proud of. https://www.wallbarn.com/case-study/timber-tiles-cata-romania/
