THE PROJECTThe Safety Letterbox Company are excited to be involved in the re-development of the historic Television Centre project. Previously home to the BBC since it’s launch in 1960, the Television Centre has been re-developed to provide private residential apartments, offices, television studios, restaurants and a range of other health & wellness amenities.The Safety Letterbox Company worked directly with the Stirling prize award-winning architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and bespoke joinery and carpentry specialists, Atlantic Contracts on the project.THE PRODUCTAllford Hall Monaghan Morris architects had a specific design requirement for the integration of the mailboxes in the development. The product had to feature a minimalistic design finish, ensuring the mailbox blended into the project location, whilst enhancing the overall design of the area of installation.The development required multiple banks of mailboxes, with each bank located in lobby areas throughout the project, allowing residents to quickly collect their mail when passing through the space. The installation wall features a convex curve that gives a unique layout to the bank of mailboxes.As is popular with prestigious projects, the sub-contractor required a site survey which The Safety Letterbox Company completed to ensure an understanding of the site profile was used, also enabling any outstanding issues to be resolved before progressing.All of the mailboxes have been recessed within the wall, optimising the space in the lobby area and ensuring that all health and safety requirements are achieved in the project walkways.The mailbox models used were the NW2 and COM 2 – 180 mailboxes. Both of these mailbox models are extremely popular having been used on notable projects including Fitzroy Place and King’s Cross Tapestry (NW2), Barratt Homes – Nine Elms and Reflections (COM 2).The bank of COM 2 mailboxes are finished in a high-quality non-standard Bronze colour finish (code: D2525 YW283F), and the bank of NW2 mailboxes use a designer colour finish (Tiger Hochwetterfest | 068/15069). Both of these finishes conform the specific project branding guidelines and match other project hardware. Mailboxes are engraved in a contrasting silver numbering etched on to the face of the mailbox, corresponding to the resident’s apartment number.USE AS A TV STUDIOThe Television Centre development is now home to a variety of daytime TV programmes including This Morning, Lorraine, Good Morning Britain, Loose Women and Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.The Centre was initially used as a short-term location for filming ITV television programmes whilst their home in ‘The London Studios’, located in Waterloo, London, was redeveloped. The Television Centre transforms the existing BBC Television centre into a mixed-use development that combines office/studio space for the BBC, entertainment and leisure facilities, housing, a hotel and office space, alongside public open spaces. Working with Gillespies and Maylim, we were commissioned to supply and install Cumaru benches and seating areas with bespoke metal work including hand rails and arm rests (designed by our in-house team) to the refurbished Helios Plaza area. In the famous external forecourt, perfectly spaced FSC Cumaru cladded doors were installed to the services/access and general storage area, for a seamless look.

The BBC Television Centre contacted Able Canopies requesting a site survey to be conducted as they were in need of a covered smoking area for their staff. They were interested in Able Canopies’ Commercial Awnings that they viewed on the website. A site survey was arranged and the Able Canopies surveyor explained the different types of awnings that they currently supply, along with the specifications of each product.

Television Centre in Shepherds Bush, West London, is the iconic former BBC HQ that was opened in 1960. Architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and developers Stanhope have now created a multi-media environment that includes apartments, offices, studios, hotels, restaurants and retail, all based around the famous crescents that defined the original complex. DRU Metro 100XT/2 designer gas fires were specified for a selection of the apartments and were installed by DRU dealers Victoria Stone of Tunbridge Wells. They utilise the exclusive DRU PowerVent system, which enables the fires to be installed in apartment complexes and other challenging locations.

Using this Laudescher Linea 4.2.1 will help combat the large reverberant noise in such a large open space. Lowering the sound pressure level to ensure those working in the space are not distracted by unwanted noise.

The Allsop family started planning their kitchen renovation project in September 2021 and wanted to create an inviting room featuring special touches such as glass work surfaces alongside the latest in energy-saving technology. As they had already installed underfloor heating in their home before, they knew that an electric floor heater would be the ideal heating solution due to its ease of use, sustainable technology, and low running costs. The DCM-PRO was chosen as the most efficient solution, offering rapid installation times and increased and huge savings on energy bills due to its efficiency, further enhanced after being paired with our 6iE Thermostat. This system was perfect for use with the Allsop’s new Karndean vinyl floors and is also ideal for kitchens with stone or ceramic floor tiles as its decoupling technology helps protect tiled floors from damage. The low-profile design of the DCM-PRO is also perfect for all types of refurbishment projects in rooms with fixed ceiling heights as it will have a negligible impact on floor levels.

Since 201, CAST in Morpeth, Northumberland, train 350 students a year in all aspects of performing arts. Their studios are equipped with over 130 square meters of Harlequin Flexity sprung panels with Harlequin Fiesta and Harlequin Engineered Oak. ‘Ever since training at Italia Conti and rehearsing in and around London, my favorite studios and performance spaces to work in were all kitted out by Harlequin! I knew I had to have Harlequin supply and install the mirrors, barres and flooring in my own performing arts school.’

Helios, the sun god of Greek mythology, is a three-metre high gilded bronze statue designed by renowned artist TB Huxley-Jones as the centre piece of the old BBC Television Centre courtyard. As part of the redevelopment of the iconic BBC Television Centre, civil engineers Arup required an engineered drainage solution for the courtyard surrounding the Helios statue and fountain.

The Amiata bath and basins in a bespoke Matt Black finish were chosen to appear on The Block, an Australian home renovations television show.This is a striking and contemporary bathroom, complete with open shower. Sitting opposite the former BBC Television Centre and adjacent to Westfield Shopping Centre, this exciting new development includes 10.4 acres of open space in the form of a new public park for White City, 1500 new homes including affordable housing and commercial premises. The Outdoor Deck Company were specified to install FSC Iroko timber tiered seating to create an external relaxation area on the Buzon pedestal system along with composite seating and stage decks across the external public areas.

Arqiva provides much of the infrastructure supporting television, radio, satellite, and wireless communications in the United Kingdom; most of the UK uses its TV services. Major broadcasters such as the BBC, ITV and BSkyB as well as independent radio groups, depend upon Arqiva to keep connected to their customers. Arqiva plans to build hundreds of new structures to meet increasing national demand, as well as to maintain its existing 6,000 sites. Arqiva sought to improve their worker access safety measures, leading them to find a more reliable replacement system.

The BBC TV Centre at Wood Lane London is world renowned for its television output over many years. Completed in February last year, much of the interior was extensively redesigned by HOK architects, with refurbishment and construction carried out by the BDL Group, one of the largest specialist dry-lining contractors in the UK. One of the key factors to ensure that noise was kept to a minimum and reverberation time reduced. The solution was high performance Troldtekt acoustic panels which were used to line all the ceilings and the soffit around the circular atrium.

London Brick wall panels in Sandy Brown were specified for this office redesign for their strength and natural characteristics. Our highly durable Texture panels are ideal for busy areas with high footfall so are perfect for the large wall in the social breakout space. In addition,Texture wall panels can support decoration and integrate features with ease, such as the television screen in this project. London Brick Sandy Brown also provides a perfect backdrop for the orange neon-lit sign. Throughout the design, the execution is impeccable with high quality fixtures and colourful furnishings bringing the office to life.

Buzon UK were specified to install the Buzon DPH pedestal system under a large area of timber tiered seating, creating the perfect space for the local community to enjoy. Buzon pedestals were also used in the construction of various external stage decks, bench seating and large terraces within the commercial area of the development.

Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive has been used to install a luxury vinyl tile floor finish at the Pavilion Bar on Norfolk’s Cromer Pier ahead of BBC television programme ‘Antiques Roadshow’ shooting an episode from the pier. Contractors took up worn carpet tiles and securely screwed down plywood sheets over the boardwalk subfloor, prior to installing Altro Wood Safety LVT’s. Styccobond F49 was applied prior to the installation of LVTs. Unlike other water-based adhesives, Styccobond F49 is resistant to water, making it the ideal choice for an installation such as this situated directly above the sea.

The BBC Elstree Studios, Borhamwood, are home to some of the top shows on British television today including; Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice, The Chase and Pointless. But let’s not forget its film heritage – Indiana Jones, Star Wars, The King’s Speech and Paddington.Now Newgate are having a piece of the action.Here at Newgate we are proud to have been awarded a new £40,000 contract to supply not only our range of vehicle access gates, but five sets of pedestrian control gates too.Whilst this is definitely one of our more exciting projects, this is not our first venture into “TV LAND”, as we have previously supplied security barriers to the original BBC HQ in London and the film set of Coronation St, in Manchester.

Grantley Hall is a dashing 17th-century stately hotel, bringing Gstaad glamour to the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Offering 47 exquisite bedrooms alongside Michelin-starred dining, the hotel has recently reopened after a four-year long and multi-million pound refurbishment. Bedrooms are decorated in elegant muted tones; soft shades of cream, gold and grey; button-back velvet armchairs; marble-topped bespoke furniture; and upholstered bedheads. There are shelves of modern hardbacks, televisions hidden behind paintings, decanters of damson gin, touch-button lighting, and even a bathrobe menu. The Anchor Line Aparthotel, formerly home to the Anchor Line Shipping Company, features EGGER Feelwood materials throughout.A full refurbishment of the upper floors of this Art Deco building has created a luxurious aparthotel. A smoky timber finish was required, and EGGER’s woodgrain decor H3406 ST38 Anthracite Mountain Larch, from the popular Feelwood range, met this brief perfectly.The decor was used to create kitchen doors and end panels, wardrobes, bookcases, and television units. The synchronised deep texture provides a striking surface that is as close as you can get to real wood.Designed by ICA and fabricated by Workspace, the chosen finish has helped to create a relaxing and contemporary interior.Lesley Annison of ICA said, “We frequently specify EGGER products throughout our hotel industry projects as there is always great availability and an extensive variety of products and finishes. We were able to select an EGGER decor for this project that provided our client with the exact look and finish they required.”

Brett Martin added a hat trick of international projects to an already impressive portfolio of major sporting venues - Wembley Stadium, Galway Racecourse and Kensington Oval in Barbados.Over 5,000 square metres of Safelight translucent GRP rooflights were installed on the magnificent 90,000 seat Wembley Stadium. The Safelight rooflights cover and brighten a significant area of the stadium directly beneath the iconic arch, providing 70% transmission of diffused natural light. Supplied in lengths ranging from 12.8m to 15.4m, the sheets were installed running from gutter to gutter, creating a series of individual bays without endlaps. Rooflights are an essential design feature for sports stadia, enabling natural daylight to reach the pitch - vital for promoting grass growth and helping ground staff to maintain an optimum playing surface that also looks impressive for televised events. The diffused daylight from Safelight GRP rooflights also improves the ambience for spectators by creating a brighter, more pleasant environment.

This project included development of bespoke signage panels and hardware designed to complement the overall design aesthetic for the refurbishment of this Grade II listed building.The Expansion includes new top floor by raising & restoring two large Victorian rooflight structures & decorative plasterwork considered ‘lost’ for 40 years, from the original 1883 Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours Gallery, built in ‘opposition’ to the Royal Academy across the road.Facilities include: doubled capacity, two cinema theatres, banqueting hall, multipurpose event and exhibition spaces, members’ bars/restaurant/club, roof terraces, judging/meeting rooms and offices.

Architectural glazing systems by Kawneer, including aluminium heritage-style GT70S windows appropriate for the conservation area, have helped to transform the façade of an old radio and television factory into the new four-storey London Screen Academy building at Highbury Grove in Islington, north London.Kawneer’s GT70S slimline renovation open-in windows were the “focal new element” of the renovation of the façade of the four-storey building at Highbury Grove in Islington, north London, where Kawneer’s AA®100 zone-drained curtain walling and series AA®190 TB entrance doors also feature.The GT70S windows with narrow sightlines were installed over 12 weeks by a team of eight from specialist sub-contractor and Kawneer dealer JPJ Installations throughout the 8,050m2 building, with the AA®100 curtain walling, which also has narrow 50mm sightlines, used on the rear elevation and the series AA®190 TB severe-duty welded doors used on the main entrance.This cutting-edge new free school by the Department for Education provides world-class film industry focused vocational training, including behind-the-camera roles, costume design, production management, distribution and marketing, alongside a broader curriculum, for 17 to 19-year-olds.

Marlon CS was chosen as the glazing option for the first phase of the expansion for the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City FC’s home ground.Clear Marlon CS allows for a high level of light transmission, an important requirement for football stadia as it not only provides a bright sheltered stand for spectators but promotes a healthy pitch without shadows, a must for televised matches.The success for this product is shown through Etihad Stadium as almost 1500m² of Marlon CS already glazed the existing canopy, with a further 4,000m² of Clear 2mm Marlon CS chosen for the construction of a new third tier. When used in Etihad Stadium, Marlon CS rooflights and side-lights provide light, bright stands where spectators are protected from the weather. This light weight sheet with impact resistance and exceptional spanning capabilities is ideal for installation in the metal structures favoured by stadia designers. Co-extruded UV protection cuts out 98% of harmful radiation reducing the effects of weathering and tinted options allow solar control.Engineered for use in roof light and side-light applications, it has a 10 year light transmission and a 3 year weather breakage warranty due to its strength and impact resistant design.Technical support was provided from design right through to installation. Since the stadium is an oval shape, each sheet of the polycarbonate had to be cut to fit exactly. By having the technical support alongside the assembly of the rooflights and side-lights, ensured no mistakes were made and allowed for a much easier installation process.
