New steel windows for Grade II listed former Police HQ now home to the YMCA

After many years of being out of use, the former police HQ (CID) building on Bridewell Island in Central Bristol has been renovated and is now the new YMCA Bristol hostel.
John Perkins Construction carried out the work along with Ferguson Mann Architects and assistance from the Bristol City Council Conservation Team.
Preserving the beauty of this Grade II Listed Building, which dates back to 1928, was paramount although it was vital that the completed building offered a modern specification for 21st century living.
Clement Windows Group were selected to provide the new steel windows.
Folkestone Urban Sports Park

A scheme designed by the award-winning Architects Guy Hollaway, The Urban Sports Park in Folkestone includes the world’s first multi-storey skatepark. The state-of-the-art facility is set on four levels and includes a skating area, climbing wall, new boxing club and café.
Cordek were requested to design and supply a bespoke formwork solution to aid the construction of the integral, reinforced concrete slab soffit for the large skating bowls on the first floor.
Shallow channel drains for height-limited areas at Lyon-Perrache station

We have overcome the challenge of installing low channels in an existing reinforced slab at the southern entrance to the French station.We have supplied mini range polymer concrete shallow drainage channels. This range is specially designed for areas with height limitation and load classes up to C250. Since this specific case involved a pedestrian tunnel, channels with heel-proof grates that comply with PMR regulations for people with reduced mobility were installed.

It was a pleasure for all involved to work on this outstanding project, an original Arts and Crafts home which has been impeccably refurbished.The recent works included extending the house, as well as opening up and changing the layout. The interior has been modernised with a contemporary touch, but cleverly retains and enhances the home’s character. The interior design of the whole home is stunning. The bedrooms and bathrooms have been individually designed and are unique to their user. Mural wallpapers, vibrant pops of colour and striking, high quality fixtures and fittings help achieve this.A combination of leaded EB20 steel windows and W40 steel doors with genuine T bars were chosen to replace the external fenestration. The new windows and doors have slim, elegant frames but bring the benefit of improved thermal efficiency and security. Internally, a bespoke W20 door screen has been used to divide the kitchen and dining area.Both the client and architect are delighted with the outcome. Steven Harp from Harp and Harp said: “This project involved a delicate balance of modernising a home that had been barely touched in a century for 21st Century family life whilst trying to retain the beautiful Arts and Crafts character and charm of the original house. The new doors and windows by Clement were a perfect product to fulfil this brief, providing modern standards or thermal comfort with an aesthetic and quality that blended seamlessly with the elegance of the original metal windows that were still on the house.”The client said: “I was initially unsure about changing the fenestration and doors in our property, as they are such an important part of the building’s character, history and aesthetics. The finished product far exceeds any expectations that we had for windows and doors that matched our original steel windows and doors, now giving us the perfect look for the house with the added bonus of double glazing and additional safety and security. Their communication throughout has been excellent and we have felt looked after every step of the way. Preventing punching shear failure with flat slab construction is critical and while traditional solutions such as links in the punching area work fairly effectively, there are disadvantages. They are time-consuming to install and risk installation inaccuracy and positional stability during concreting. A product that does offer a cost-effective, easy-to-install solution, is the widely used and dependable Schöck Bole shear rail; and one of the many construction sites where Bole is the system of choice is the New Green project at Rainham in Essex, where two outdated 13-storey tower blocks are being replaced by mid-rise, high density buildings, providing 197 homes. As with any reinforced concrete slab design, the New Green project is at risk of punching shear failure, which traditionally has been resolved by adding further concrete, such as the use of downstand beams or localised thickened column heads. However these measures require complex formwork and significantly reduce the benefits offered by the flat slab design. By incorporating the Schöck Bole shear rail system, installation is cost-effective and significantly faster than traditional loose links. The ready-to-install reinforcement element consists of double-headed studs with spacing bars to ensure correct positioning. Spacers allow installation on the formwork, making installation on the construction site and in the precast plant quicker, safer and easier to achieve. The dramatically reduced fixing time far outweighs any additional material costs that may be involved with a prefabricated system.
Striking black steel door screen chosen for this London home renovation

The owners of this four storey, semi-detached, Victorian home have totally transformed it to create a wonderful, contemporary space, full of character, colour and texture.The works undertaken included the demolition of the existing lower ground conservatory and the construction of a full width rear extension. The new space provides a large kitchen, dining and sitting area, but also retains the connection to the front snug. A two storey extension was formed along the side return, providing a boot room and utility space on the lower ground level and a cloakroom and WC on the upper ground level. A bespoke, black steel door screen from the Clement EB24 range was designed to form a glazed elevation facing onto the raised garden from the kitchen. The feature doors, along with other elements, such as the wide oak timber flooring, Bauwerk painted walls and a specialist kitchen provided by Daulby and Tickle, have created an incredible result.The Architect, Daniel Harris said “We’ve worked with Clement Windows on several residential projects, this one being the most complex. The process from initial sketch design through to installation was excellent. Clement produced highly detailed drawings and were very responsive throughout the development of the design. The installation team worked in close collaboration with the Contractor and ensured all elements of the openings were prepared and ready for installation. The end result was an extremely high quality and complex product installed with very low tolerances to an impeccable standard.”Photograph: GG Archard

The early 20th century saw the development of a distinct architectural movement often termed ‘Stripped Classicism’. Running in tandem with the Modernist Movement of the Bauhaus School, the movement strove for bold massings, severe angles and a stylised reduction of classical elements. This style was frequently chosen by governments when designing official buildings.Perhaps the best known example of this type of architecture in the UK is the Grade II Listed Waltham Forest Town Hall, the headquarters of the London Borough of Waltham Forest Town Council. Designed by architect Philip Hepworth, construction of the building began in 1938 but was interrupted by the Second World War and so not completed until 1942. In 2019 the council approved an extensive programme of renovation works to the Town Hall which included the replacement of all the original steel windows. Clement W20 steel windows were chosen as the right product for their quality. The new white windows include both top hung and side hung opening casements with complementary fittings in a dark bronze finish.Senior Project Manager at Waltham Forest Town Hall John Cattermole said:“The team at Clement provided a great service in supplying new windows as part of the Town Hall refurbishment. Very specific aesthetic and energy performance criteria needed to be met when it came to the window replacement. The W20 windows supplied by Clement were able to meet all of these requirements. Despite the project being on site at the height of the pandemic, the windows were delivered to programme which enabled seamless installation. Now the building has been brought back into use really positive feedback has been received from both staff and visitors.”
Former Church gets new lease of life with new steel windows and doors, after being renovated into four superb homes

A chapel was first built at Swan Hill in the town of Shrewsbury in 1767. In 1868, this was demolished and replaced with the current building; schoolrooms were then added in 1880. Charters Property Ltd who specialise in property development, consultancy and project management, recently purchased the deconsecrated church and have transformed the building into a prestigious development of four fabulous homes.Sensitivity was key when renovating the property and the majority of the original features have been preserved. Original stone walls, lintels and cills have been repaired and impeccably replaced. The walls and roofs have been insulated and energy saving measures implemented to create a comfortable, efficient living environment.Although it was possible to restore some of the original fenestration, double glazed replacement steel windows were still required throughout the building. Clement were thrilled to manufacture these new steel windows and doors. Various Clement ranges were used to meet the different criteria required for the project. For example, the Brooking range was used for the beautiful arched head windows on the front elevation as it would best replicate the originals which would have been silicone fronted. EB16 was used for other windows where silicone fronting was not required and W20 was used to make the steel doors. In total over thirty individual windows were specified, all in various shapes and sizes.Clement Conservation Rooflights were also specified, which bring masses of light in through the beautiful, high ceilings.James Charters, Director of Charters Property said “We were very pleased with the attention to detail and finish of the steel windows, Clement took ownership of their section of the project and were able to deliver a complex scheme on time and to a very good standard. A great example of 1930s Art Deco architecture, The Douglas Building sits on Great Titchfield Street in London’s West End. Formerly known as The Media Village, Douglas House was acquired by serviced office providers The Office Group (TOG) from landlords The Langham Estate in 2019. TOG together with Note Design Studio transformed the building with a colourful concept that blends the distinctive 1930s features and gives a sense of fluidity, openness and light throughout.As its former name suggests this area of London is a hub for local media and IT businesses operating out of the West End and the brief for the building was to create a flexible workspace where people can feel stimulated by their environment leading to greater productivity. Wellness was also a central focus and the building includes an oxygen room, a parents’ room and a roof terrace which are all integral to enabling and inspiring everyone who enters.Well ventilated and an abundance of natural light have become buzzwords in the COVID era and the more than 300 new steel windows from the Clement EB24 range which were chosen by office fit out and refurbishment contractors Parkeray perfectly facilitate both. Polyester powder coated in Pure White and furnished with Warren handles in a satin chrome finish the windows lend the building a contemporary look on the outside as well as supporting the 21st century ways of working inside.Peter Clement, Chief Executive of Clement Windows Group, commented:“As with all prestigious window replacement projects of this magnitude Clement took part in a competitive tender process. New Clement steel windows for Alfred Hitchcock's Grade II listed house

Situated in Shamley Green, Surrey, Winters Grace is a beautiful Grade II listed property in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Winters Grace was the home of celebrity film director Alfred Hitchcock at the height of his Hollywood fame. The name of the house came from his two favourite actresses, Shelley Winters and Grace Kelly.Alfred Hitchcock and his wife purchased the property in 1928 for £2,500. The building was originally a Tudor farmhouse, dating from the 16th century. Over the years the house has been renovated on various occasions, but after planning requests were approved in 2012 the current owners carried out major works to update this very special property.Clement were chosen by Godalming firm O&D Construction to manufacture and install the windows. Trevor O’Brien from O&D commented: “Every steel window in Winters Grace was bespoke and many required different window furniture selected by the client. There was also a combination of clear and leaded light glazing. All of this amounted to quite a complex order for Clement. We found them easy to deal with and they delivered high quality products to the agreed programme. ASF Art Deco Stainless Steel Railings, Bradford Town Hall

ASF were approached by Bradford Council with drawings of a complicated art deco railing design. ASF worked to these drawings to produce a fully fabricated, fully welded set of railings for the area around Bradford Town Hall. The railings are manufactured in large section, heavy duty marine grade 316 stainless steel that was then painstakingly hand polished to give a satin brushed final look. The railings are sited around garden areas, along walkways and a shorter version was manufactured to run along a wall top. The end product is a very robust, visually stunning railing that requires little maintenance.
ASF 650 Trough Bollards - Little Neville Street, Leeds

We supplied our ASF 650 trough for this project in the centre of Leeds. The bollards were the standard product with no additional engineering for specific loading, but utilised our lid system which itself withstands over 8000kg spread load. The standard ASF 650 trough bollard is a steel trough with a reinforced durbar lid, finished galvanised, and hosting a 1000mm high, 101mm diameter stainless steel bollard.These bollards were used in a tunnelled area and had additional black reflective band.

Over half a century later Clement return to one of Bristol’s landmark buildings to install new steel windows

In the heart of Bristol’s City Centre lies The Pithay, now known as Programme. This immense building, originally built in the 1960s was tired and required refurbishment. After being acquired by Resolution Property in 2016 a plan was developed by Buckley Gray Yeoman, based on Resolution’s ambitious brief to revitalise the building.
Clement Windows Group was chosen as the preferred company to manufacture and install the 510 new steel windows required. Clement were thrilled to win the job, particularly as the current Chief Executive Peter Clement’s father had installed the original windows back in 1966!
Open mesh steel balustrades, walkways, stairs at Bradfield College Greek Theatre: DemiAlto-55×110/50×5

Open mesh steel balustrades, walkways, stairs and an agora now provide a safe and spectacular descent into the arena as part of an ambitious restoration project of the 1890 amphitheatre at Bradfield College.
The theatre performs triennial Greek plays and celebrated its re-opening with a gala performance of Antigone in May 2014.
The balustrade panels were made from DemiAlto grating with bespoke aperture of 55x110mm. The panels were installed without posts and were fixed through plates, mounted below the finished floor level. The grating was made with a suitable section of bearing bar to take the potential crowd loading.
Wakefield’s New £3.76m State of the art Fire Station

The fire station is relocating from Dale Street, Ossett, to nearer Wakefield city centre as part of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority's Integrated Risk Management Plan and replaces the current near Ossett town centre.
The new location will enable crews to support the Combined Aerial Rescue Pump based in Wakefield.
Coun Tracey Austin, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service vice chairwoman, carried out the ground breaking ceremony. She said: "This marks the start of a very exciting project in
Wakefield district and I am looking forward to seeing the new station taking shape.”
Kenwood Warehouse - Concrete floor repairs, for heavy traffic areas

Project detailsKenwood, a kitchen appliance manufacturer in Hampshire was suffering with dusty floors and wanted to improve the visual appearance of the warehouse area. Kenwood contacted Watco because they had come to trust our products, having used them over many years. We suggested not only the most suitable repair products and floor coatings but a trusted and experienced flooring specialist to apply the products, Aedean Flooring Ltd in Farnborough, Hampshire.Our solution The floor was shot blasted and lightly ground before being repaired with Watco Concrex® Carbon Fibre, an incredibly strong epoxy resin repair mortar and Watco Flowpatch®, a pourable patch repair material for heavily trafficked floors. Aedean suggested the use of colour inside the aisles, which Kenwood thought was a good idea as it would making identifying each aisle easier. Epoxy Gloss Coat in mid grey was used in the main walkways in the warehouse so that the area could be back in use quickly after coating. The colours chosen for the aisles were: Safety Yellow, Signal Red, Royal Blue and Black. Epoxy Gloss Coat is an extremely tough and decorative industrial floor coating which is ideal in situations where durability is important. "We are delighted with the outcome which completely revitalised the appearance of the warehouse, protecting the floor for many years to come."

In the summer of 2007 the country witnessed extensive flooding with areas in England experiencing “over two months rainfall in just 14 hours.” Loss of water and electricity supply was experienced with thousands of homes. Providing protection against a 1 in 1000 year flood event involved building over 1 kilometer of reinforced concrete and sheet piled walls. As well as protecting the site from future flooding, the team at RHI Industrials worked in partnership with Lochrin Bain to ensure the security fencing system was fully integrated with the substations new flood defences.

TT Admix Specified For Major New Build Construction

Triton has supplied 3,280kg of TT Admix, its BBA certified concrete waterproofing system, to a prestigious new build project in West London. The project is a new car dealership situated between the M4 flyover and the site of Brentwood FC's new stadium. The construction comprises a watertight concrete base with welded sheet piled walls and a watertight concrete capping beam to provide a Type B integral waterproofing solution to BS 8102 (2009). On top of the slab is a steel framed structure.

Aylesbury Estate, in South London, has become one of the most significant urban renewal projects in London. There is a new public square at the heart of the regeneration, featuring two separate blocks, from four to fifteen storeys which provide a Community Facility, Public Library, Community Health Care facility and an Early Years Centre. The sustainability strategy in place for Aylesbury Square is to ‘create a place which meets or exceeds the highest quality standards for a development in London’ – and as the wall connection to the floor or floor slab can be a serious source of linear thermal bridges – the inclusion of the dedicated new Sconnex® type W is a critical addition to the design detailing. Around 40% of all thermal bridges in a building are caused by walls and supports, resulting in some 10% of heating energy losses. With reinforced concrete construction, minimising linear thermal bridges in these areas has undoubtedly been a perennial problem. However, the unique new Sconnex® type W offers outstanding insulation performance, combined with an exceptional load-bearing capacity which transmits very high pressure, tensile and shear forces in the longitudinal and transverse direction. This is made possible by the use of a pressure buffer consisting of ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concrete, which achieves compressive strength in excess of 175 N/mm2 – but with extremely good flexural strength as well. There is also a significant cost reduction involved when compared to installing insulation beneath the floor slab.

The new Headquarters of Goldman Sachs in London is in a great location on Farringdon Street in the City of London. This massive office development of 1.1 million square feet includes a large auditorium which is isolated to protect it from tube train noise and to protect the rest of the building.Sandy Brown specified that the box-in-box construction needed 10Hz bearings supporting it.Our local branch worked with Byrne Brothers to design supply and install the concrete floating floors and structural bearings. The complicated 3-dimensional space is supported on 5 separate floating floors with bearings beneath designed to take the column loads.The floating floors consist of Stravifloor Deck isolation rails supporting composite metal decking, reinforcement and concrete.Some of the columns are supported on Stravibase SEB bearings located outside of the floating floor areas.The new building has been named the ‘groundscraper’ due to its mammoth size – it will become one of London’s new collection of landmark buildings.

Builders have recreated The Rovers Return, The Kabin and Dev’s corner shop as well as the characters’ homes down to every minute detail.
Builders laid about 11,000 cobbles, 190,000
bricks of different types and used seven colours of mortar so it looks realistic.
The new set is full size so two cars will be able to pass each other on the Street.

This system is made to order, and as such can be set up to host any combination of post and panel or hand railing. Contrasting polish finish can be used on the bollards to show the machined top as more of a feature.
Posts can be reinforced to make them ram raid resistant.

The Rowe is a new architecturally designed office space in Whitechapel London, where tradition meets innovation. With outside space on every level, the building sets a sustainable benchmark for new office space in central London. The new elements mimics the horizontal banding of the 1960s concrete building as well as contrasting with a steel structure and dark metal palette.The architects, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, had used KEIM previously. They contacted KEIM as they wanted a sustainable product in keeping with their core values. Samples were carried out, as shown in the photo below, to determine the most suitable colour.First off, KEIM Concrete Repair Mortar (KEIM Concretal-MR 2.0) was used for large repairs within the concrete. KEIM Fine Finishing Mortar (KEIM Concretal-FSP 0.2) was then used for levelling repairs as it is a much finer aggregate mix.KEIM Soldalit CL018, a light grey colour, was chosen to compliment the steel structure and due to its characteristics, was applied onto the previously painted surface without the need for a primer. It is fire resistant – A2-s1, d0 classified and Cradle to Cradle certified.The Rowe has been shortlisted for an AJ Retrofit Award 2023 in the Workspace (£10m and over) category. It was also awarded BREEAM ‘Excellent’, WELL ‘Platinum’ and received SmartScore certification.

Lewis Deck was chosen, on this particular project in London, for a number of the key benefits the system brings. These being the strength of the system with only needing a thin concrete screed on top, the acoustic qualities & vibration control properties and the speed an ease of installation. This project even requested much longer sheets than standard in an effort to speed up the installation process. In fact you can see from the main photo above that some of the sheets were extremely long. The longest being just over 6.5m.This project was the installation of a new suspended, loadbearing concrete floor above an existing floor below. The space being used as a plant room for the hospital. The Lewis Deck was installed over a suspended steel grid of Light Gauge Steel C-section joists. A thin concrete was then installed over the top.This was a quick installation with the Lewis Deck being installed and then used as a safe working deck ahead of the screed being pumped in.

GRP Rail Station Platform - Hybrid Install | Case StudyRobroyston station features two brand new platforms constructed using the Dura Composites recommended hybrid GRP and steel solution which is designed to meet the requirements of Network Rail standard NR/L3/CIV/030 and combines the strength of a steel foundation with a Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) Dura Platform surface. The platform surface has incredible durability and anti-slip properties which is shown to reduce by only 5% after a million footfalls (tested to BS 7976-2:2002+A1:2013).AmcoGiffen were responsible for delivering the design and build works for the development, with funding for the station coming from Glasgow City Council, Network Rail and the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.In choosing the GRP/Steel system from Dura Composites, the platform installation for the project (using GRP Dura Platform and steel trestles) has been able to take place largely while the line is open, minimising the impact on customers using the line.

The ancient printing house of “De Vooruit” in the Center of Ghent, was completely stripped to only the ancient concrete supporting structure. From there the renovation to an ultramodern student home was to be made with steel, providing safe stairways, safe and easy to walk on platforms, as well as outside sitting areas for the students. This was all to be made in aesthetical harmony with other products, such as COR-TEN steel that was used in the project. This to create a modern look, aspiring to the students.The project criteriaPcP had to meet the criteria for a sustainable, durable product which was safe and comfortable to walk on. At the same time, the product needed to blend in well with the COR-TEN steel being used for other parts of the project, providing a modern look that would appeal to students. Another challenge was installing the new steel structure onto the existing concrete supporting structure of the original building.The solutionLannoo Konstruktie chose the OPTIMO® O2, Spiral treads – Type K and panels, as these high-quality products met all the stated requirements for the new student accommodation building. The structure was then developed to create ultramodern student accommodation using steel with safe stairways, safe and comfortable platforms as well as exterior seating areas for students. This work all harmonised aesthetically with the other building materials, such as the COR-TEN steel used in the project. The aim was to create a modern and inspiring student residence.Architectural steel platform and spiral stair treadsThe project lasted a total of five months from first production to final installation of the panels and steps. In total, 150 spiral K treads were used for three spiral stairs on the three-storey building. More than 100 OPTIMO® O2 treads were installed, together with almost 300 square metres of OPTIMO® O2 panels, both standard and customised. For Lannoo Konstruktie, it was a very attractive project to be engaged in, and likewise for PcP, which is used to projects which are more industrial in nature.
