A strong masonry base envelopes a timber clearstory and gables, aluminium dormers and a Zintek Mediterranean Blue zinc roof, to give a truly contemporary interpretation of a traditional mews building. The Townhouses are formed with complex twisted geometries. As with the adjacent mews, materials were selected incorporating a solid masonry base, timber cladding to the projecting cantilevered boxes, aluminium glazing systems, white render and topped with blue zinc mono-pitched roofs.

A traditional Glass Crystalline module would add substantial weight, wind sheer load on the standing seam fixings and require access for bi-annual cleaning with the then risk of damage during that process.The thin, flexible solar modules do not detract from the design of the house and offer an excellent yield even in low light conditions.

The Royal Russell School in Croydon demonstrates the vast variety of waterproofing applications with which DANOPOL membranes can be specified. From standard flat roof areas to pitched standing seam roofs, vertical applications and accessible terraces, the flexibility of specification is really showcased on this project. The most noticeable feature is the stunning standing seam roofs, which are also DANOPOL HSF+ membrane, completed with ALPHA PROFILES. These ALPHA PROFILES are raised PVC profiles made from DANOPOL materials which can be retrospectively heat welded to the surface of the completed waterproofing system. The use of Alpha Profiles is rapidly increasing as the design may be highly customised and the installed centres can be changed to suit a clients particular aesthetic preferences and are often installed to obscure any standard membrane overlaps. An advantage of selecting DANOPOL membranes over a traditional metal standing seam roof option is that at less than 3.00kg per m2 for the waterproofing membrane, the system is incredibly lightweight and may be installed onto many lightweight structural substrates. The reduced load, when compared to traditional standing seam roof options, can also translate into savings on the underlying supporting structure. NHDC Office in Letchworth Garden City was an old courtyard style building with buildings on 4 sides covered with a metal roofing system laid to a low pitch and suffering from water ingress. The project involved a major refurbishment of a 1970s office block to enable council services to be brought in from scattered locations in to single occupancy. The main roof areas and glazing were the two major failing elements of the old building.The client proposed an over-roof solution by installing an 18 mm ply secured through the existing metal deck back to the secondary roof structure and suggested using single ply membrane for the waterproofing layer. Working closely with Delomac Roofing, the correct options were discussed and priced and the IKO Armourplan PSG roofing membrane was specified thanks to its flexibility and extended guarantee offer.Replacement of the existing metal standing seam roof system meant that the new alternatives had to reflect the same appearance to keep the original look of the building. The building survey highlighted a woodwool slab base and suggested that any works would require a removal of the base to allow a secure roofing system.The head of the glazed facades was originally detailed with a failing metal mansard dressing and had slipped off allowing major water ingress into the building.Working closely as part of Willmott Dixon’s Supply Chain Network, Delomac Roofing and IKO Polymeric carried out a more detailed appraisal to review the initial specification, and were able to offer an overlay specification, securing the plywood overlay to the woodwool – obviating further building exposure and potential waste to landfill.Whilst the main area was simply detailed, perimeter and mansard details were a lot more complex as they involved cleaning cradle plinths, creating multiple service penetrations and ensuring a crisp building line is maintained on the external facades.IKO Polymeric Armourplan PSG membrane and colour matching standing seams were installed to a very good standard on mansard details.IKO Armourplan PSG is a membrane unique to IKO Polymeric. With its superior reinforcement and the use of premium quality PVC throughout, the membrane’s unique formulation provides ease of installation. The extra flexibility of the membrane helped the installers of Delomac Roofing to achieve the desired tight and crisp details on the standing seams. Pipe details were also installed to the highest standard by using IKO Armourplan G detailing membrane.Potential waste to landfill was dramatically reduced by retaining existing deck and using the woodwool as contributor to the required thermal upgrade. All works were completed to a tight programme schedule despite a particularly wet summer.IKO Polymeric supplied the whole roofing system for this refurbishment project including VCL, thermal insulation, single ply membrane, membrane and insulation adhesives, fixings and fasteners and also rainwater outlets which provided the client a single point guarantee of 25 years.

The Clowance Estate is an all-year-round luxury holiday accommodation based in Cornwall. Recently, the estate decided to include a tree house in their holiday complex which is situated in a forest location and looks over a lake.Blue Forest -the world’s leading tree house consultancy – is involved in the design of this luxurious holiday home consisting of two main intersecting circular elements (one radius 2600mm and the other 3700mm) and one rectangular zone. The tree house has an outstanding design incorporating modern materials and a bold sharp angular canopy roof.The concept demanded a complex roof design as it had to meet so many requirements for visual appearance and detailing work such as conical-to-conical and conical-to-dual pitch valley interfaces and curved fascia detail.The steeply designed pitch made the installation very challenging. As the aesthetics were an important element of this high-calibre project, it was essential to achieve excellent workmanship standards on crisp lines of the field area, drip trim facets and standing seams.The roof build up consisted of three layers of 6mm plywood which were waterproofed by 110m2 of fully bonded IKO Armourplan P PVC Membrane. Standing seam profiles were also installed on a faceted deck using contact adhesive to give the roof the desired sharp look.IKO Armourplan P is a membrane unique to IKO Polymeric. With its superior reinforcement and the use of premium quality PVC throughout, the membrane’s enhanced formulation provides ease of installation.The extra flexibility of the membrane helped to achieve the desired tight and crisp details on the standing seams. It is also completely UV stable which makes the membrane more durable.

Bishop Challoner Catholic College is based in Kings Heath, with over 1000 pupils; it is one of the highest performing comprehensive schools in the country.ISSUES IDENTIFIEDThe defective waterproof covering that was constructed with standing seam aluminium was very prone to movement and had been leaking for some time, particularly in the box gutters.SOLUTIONThe solution provided infilling the troughs of the standing seam with 60mm of IKO enertherm MG Insulation to give a level surface this was then overboard with another layer of 60mm of Insulation which was mechanically fixed through to the standing seam aluminium this provided a stable and rigid surface upon which a two-layer bituminous waterproofing system was applied. The box gutters and parapet walls were boxed out with plywood prior to the application of the waterproofing. Complexity and Workmanship.RESPONSIBILITYThe College sports hall remained in full operation and access was a key issue to the site which involved critical management throughout the contract to ensure both the health and physical safety of pupils could be maintained.

The proprietors of this domestic property in Harrogate added a large extension with a total roof area of 150m2. The client wanted the new roof sections to complement the slate work and aesthetics of the original building whilst adding a contemporary and stylish look to the extension.Originally considering a zinc sheeted roofing system, the client explored alternative materials that could achieve the same visual impact but at lower cost. After discussions with Cure Roofing Ltd, a Polyroof simulated metal finish was proposed as a roofing solution that would meet all the client’s requirements.Not only do Polyroof’s range of liquids offer cost savings over traditional metals, but they are also lighter in weight, totally seamless and can be pigmented to any RAL colour. Having no scrap value, the client also had the added peace of mind that the roof would not be a target for theft.A timber warm roof was constructed which incorporated 120mm PIR insulation to achieve a U-Value of 0.18 W/m2K in compliance with building regulations. An OSB3 TG4 deck was fitted above the insulation and Polyroof pre-formed GRP standing seam trims were fixed at 600mm centres into the deck. Next, the first coat of the Protec waterproofing system was applied over the whole roof area and encapsulating the standing seam trims. The roof was finished with a second coat of Protec pigmented to RAL 7016 providing an anthracite grey colour to the whole roof, accurately simulating the appearance of zinc roof sheets.The workmanship by Polyroof approved contractor Cure Roofing was second to none and the quality of the finish left the client delighted with their new roof. With BBA approval, top-rated fire performance and Polyroof’s trusted 20 Year Accredited System Guarantee, the client has total peace of mind that their new extension could not be better protected for decades to come.

The apartment building, one of six individual buildings on the Wick Lane development provides a selection of one, two & three bedroom apartments.The design incorporates Standing Seams at 200mm, 300mm, 400mm & 500mm centres in a random arrangement wrapping both the vertical façade and across the roof areas.GreenCoat PLX RAL 6027, Glacial Green was selected as it offered the Architect the bespoke colour selection. A separate low level building on the site is clad and roofed using GreenCoat PLX Metallic Silver in a similar random seam layout.

Luxury countryside holiday letsAward winning architectural practice Pocknell Studio were tasked with renovating deteriorating, redundant, two-storey structures in addition to creating new field barns to create spectacular accommodation for a fabulous countryside holiday retreat.This architect has a long-standing preference for using Rainline for their projects so it was no surprise when the galvanised steel guttering and downpipes were specified for the North and South Barns. The Silver Metallic colour option was a perfect selection for the hipped roof design with black and white palette.The field bands are finished in a contemporary take on the traditional black Essex barn and designed to fit into a typical country environment. The brick and timber clad buildings are finished with not only Lindab Rainline rainwater system but also Lindab Seamline standing seam roofing system. The valley roof and staggered fascade design was a particular challenge which required careful detailing and installation to ensure steep falls which allow rapid drainage.Bullocks Farm have tried to create “a quiet haven for people visiting the area and have made each property as comfortable, relaxing and practical as possible”. The architects are very happy that the project has been successful for the client and further development of the site will continue.

Ouvane, Sutton, Co, Dublin. The original property on the site of these 3 new wonderful properties, was a 3,500m2 house which was built in the 1960’s. This was sold to MKN Property in 2016. The original building was demolished and its place 3 new homes built, called individually Ouvane, Shoreline and Seascape. The project architect, Fred Wilson of Fred Wilson Architects knew from the outset that metal was to be used for the façade. After some research he quickly decided upon PREFA PREFALZ standing seam in P.10 Anthracite colour. Since he had already come into contact with PREFA products in other projects, he knew about their durability: "The paint lasts longer and we also wanted an environmentally friendly solution," explains the architect. In the Ouvane project, the façade and the windows were to be the same colour – not only to do justice to the overall design composition - ( while the three houses stand out from their architectural surroundings, they merge with the surrounding landscape due to their dark colouring in a view of the coastal section ). Depending on the weather and time of day, the façade takes on different colours – from a cloudy grey to a dark shimmering blue. Each home has gate at the bottom of its garden that leads onto the beach. While there are lots homes in Ireland facing the sea, there are currently fewer than 100 properties that back directly onto the sea. The Burrell Collection’s renaissance is an ambitious refurbishment which will allow visitors to explore all three floors in the building, set out as galleries, visible stores and special exhibition spaces. Arup was tasked to improve and reinstate the entire envelope of the building. The goal for the failing metal standing seam roof was to replace it with a new waterproofing system incorporating falls to provide effective drainage and to incorporate sustainable technology in the form of solar PV.
