Open mesh steel balustrades, walkways, stairs and an agora now provide a safe and spectacular descent into the arena as part of an ambitious restoration project of the 1890 amphitheatre at Bradfield College. The theatre performs triennial Greek plays and celebrated its re-opening with a gala performance of Antigone in May 2014. The balustrade panels were made from DemiAlto grating with bespoke aperture of 55x110mm. The panels were installed without posts and were fixed through plates, mounted below the finished floor level. The grating was made with a suitable section of bearing bar to take the potential crowd loading.

It supplied a staircase balustrade with LED lit handrails and a frameless glass balustrade for the void. John Bonning, the Building Centre’s commercial director said: “We applied glass risers to each solid oak tread, which safely created the same floating stair effect as the original but made the stair compliant with modern building regulations. The materials reflected the quality of the Building Centre, whilst drawing natural light into the lower gallery.”

Therefore, it was essential to provide a safe solution that met but exceeded the criteria for public access walkways, treads & landings while also meeting the design brief.The solutionThe solution constituted a complete solution consisting of OPTIMO O5-M treads, landings & walkways. The combination of the choice of product and material provides excellent slip resistance, multi-directional, stiletto proof, walking stick proof, DDA compliant colour contrasting Nosings, self-draining & strength to weight ratio.The project success was determined by close collaboration with the partner, discussing product capabilities, loading criteria, etc., working closely with our technical sales & drawing office. This enabled them to detail/design their support steelwork to suit, saving them detailing time & money on unnecessary support/steel.Additionally, PcP was involved with product development & design assistance to supply a suitable safe solution to the brief.The resultMore than 150m2 walkways/landings plus stair treads with DDA compliant Nosings for public access at HMS Victory.

In 2019 as part of Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s £3.6million visitor centre development, AATi were approached to manufacture Cast Iron anti-slip floor plates to construct the “Walk of Art 2”. This, a striking 100 metre long installation designed by Gordon Young, a well-renowned artist known best for his large public art installations. 51 cast Iron plates make up one of the entrance walkways and bear over 10,000 names of supports of YSP, immortalising them for future generations.

The New Independent Whitbed specified for the main flooring provided the aesthetic qualities and character required for large areas of floor in a luxury development of this kind.New Independent Whitbed was selected for 1860m² of flooring, 454 linear metres of stair treads and 1,300 linear metres of skirtings. Two fireplaces were also produced using New Independent Whitbed as well as the bath surrounds and bath steps. Independent Grove Whitbed was selected for internal wall tiling and Bowers Roach for feature panels on the external facades.
