Client: Bristol City Council Consultants: Chapman Taylor Architects & Arup Design Main Contractor: Bouygues UK Specialist Contractor: Optimum Dry Wall Systems Main Products Used: Emshield DFR-2 SystemOn the site of the former ambulance station adjacent to Castle Park, the largest urban green space in Bristol, this development is designed to provide 375 new homes, with a mixture of build-to-rent and affordable housing units. This comprises a new 26-storey tower, which will be the tallest building in Bristol, together with a 10-storey block, plus a third central building connecting the two, and providing a business centre and leisure facilities for the residents, as well as direct access to the park. The architects designed wide structural expansion joints to accommodate the anticipated levels of movement between the different building structures, as well as in and between the main reinforced concrete floor slabs and the structural frame of the building. They also wanted to reduce any noise transmission through the joints and to ensure that the designated levels of fire protection were maintained, which meant that the joints had to be treated to provide 2-hours fire resistance. To meet all these demands, the answer was a single solution using Emshield DFR-2 (horizontal floor joints) / WFR-2 (for vertical wall joints) systems. These produce a watertight joint, that can accommodate high movement up to 100% (+/- 50%), greatly reduce sound transmission (STC 62; OITC 52), and which are CE Marked to EN-1366-4 for up to 4 hrs fire resistance. 

Amtico provides the ‘wow’ factor at Princes Quay Shopping Centre with a highly durable design-led flooring. Central to the brief was providing a highly durable flooring that could guarantee its performance in the face of extremely high footfall. It also needed to comprise a dynamic pattern and texture, which would be effective on a big and bold scale, catering for the extensive area. SMW utilised the premium Signature Collection - offering a 20 year commercial warranty and laid in a bespoke ‘Basket Weave’ laying pattern.

Includio is a new-build hotel concept and the first of its kind for the city of Regensburg, in the Bavarian region of Germany.  The hotel reception, corridors, bedrooms and conference facilities feature a range of four different Milliken cushion backed modular carpet, as well as its OBEX entrance flooring products. Castell High School in Flintshire supplies co-education to 1300+ students promoting strong levels of well-being.The original school building was established in 1958 and as the student intake grew extensions were built in 1974 and 1992 to accommodate.2021 saw the latest extension, Y Celtec building, completed. Problems soon became apparent with the walls within the new area being clean and damage free.The school’s Site supervisor, Paul Muncey explained “Keeping the white painted walls clean was becoming a nightmare for our cleaning team and within 12 months of the building coming into use the walls along the corridors required repainting.”Business Manager Emma Manning had come across Yeoman Shield wall protection solutions in a previous position and got in touch with regards to protecting the new building’s wall before the impact damage became too great.Yeoman Shield directly employed fixing operatives installed Mid-Grey FalmouthEx, 2500 x 1250 mm wall protection panels along the corridor walls.The panels once in place not only protect from damage but are easy to clean down and will prove over the years to reduce repair and maintenance costs. Soundis were contracted by Parkeray to provide an acoustic flooring solution for an expansion at the London campus of Point Blank Music School, a prestigious award-winning music school. With the likes of Leona Lewis, Goldie, Aluna francis and Felix Jaehn attending the school in the past.We supplied our Soundis Acoustic Cradle and Batten System. As this system provides an exceptional reduction in both impact and airborne noise. The Soundis Cradle & Batten also created a void for the underfloor applications, such as their cables for the studio booths. Our Cradle and Risers are manufactured from 100% recycled materials assisting to the sustainability targets of projects. Installation was carried out by our installation partner UK Acoustic Systems.

SMARTPLY FR/FR BUILD OSB3 from MEDITE SMARTPLY has been used as a flame retardant flooring solution within a seven-storey, timber frame accommodation building for students of John Moores University and University of Liverpool.

One Hyde Park, owned by CPC Group, is a high-end residential and retail park. Due to the nature and standard of the construction, developers required the highest quality tools, equipment and materials to construct the building. The ambition was to keep the design lines sleek, elegant and spacious, while still achieving the required high thermal performance expected in in a modern prestigious development in the heart of London. Insulating the floors introduced another level of complexity and so the search for something that was up to the challenge began.After meeting with developers, our experts concluded that SuperFOIL SFUF would be the most practical and efficient solution to the project. With a slim profile of just 6mm and R value of 0.8, SFUF gives a great solution where floor depths are limited. SFUF has a slightly different build-up to our typical roof / wall products in that it doesn’t include layers of wadding, this makes it much slimmer and less compressible, making it an ideal combination for solid floor applications. Unlike our other products, SFUF is also typically installed with no air gaps which, again, contributes to its slim profile. The top layer of SFUF is a polythene membrane which provides protection allowing it to be screeded onto directly with no need for additional layers to be installed. This also makes SFUF ideal for use with underfloor heating systems. The application of SuperFOIL SFUF was a success and the building was finished in 2010. Starting at £20million, One Hyde Park residential properties began selling soon after the completion of the complex. SuperFOIL SFUF provided a solution to achieve a high level of thermal performance in this prestigious development. SFUF has an impressive thermal r-value achieving excellent performance in a minimal amount of space 

International Timber recently teamed up with experiential accommodation constructor Armadilla to provide cladding for its brand-new product called the ‘Wave’, which was assembled on a customer’s site near Fort William in the northwest of Scotland.

A range of premium and high performance products from Kingspan Insulation has been installed on a stunning new beachfront home on the Isle of Wight, featured on Grand Designs. This includes Kingspan Kooltherm K8 Cavity Board, which was used to insulate the majority of the walls throughout the property, and Kingspan Kooltherm K7 Pitched Roof Board, which was were applied to the ground floor overhang. With thermal conductivities as low as 0.020 W/m.K, the products delivered the required thermal performance with a slim build-up, helping to maximise space within the rooms.

Haydn Avenue is a block of 8 purpose-built flats consisting of seven one beds, and one two beds arranged in two interlinked blocks. The front block includes six flats over three floors with two further flats to the rear block over two. This development is located within walking distance of Haydons Road station and offers regular links into central London.Cellecta’s Mojave S2-8 was specified by Papa Architects as it offers a dry and robust floor build up from one source. Mojave S2-8 is a high-performance underfloor heating system which performs at a low flow temperature. XFLO FF boards are manufactured to suit the pipe diameter and spacing required to achieve the desired thermal output.Caldera Construction was awarded this 100m² contract for this development in Wimbledon.
