Hart Door Systems Ltd

Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate is a fourth generation independent family business, passionate about some of the finer things in life – beautiful tea rooms, handmade cakes, traditional breads, proper tea and top quality coffee. They are the business behind Yorkshire Tea, Taylors of Harrogate coffee and the famous Bettys Café Tea Rooms.Project/doors: 5 Speedor Super, 1 Speedor Mini, 12 Fire Shutter, 21 Pedestrian doors, 1 Electric roller shutter, 1 Insulated Roller ShutterThe challenge Due to the size and weight of the insulated roller shutter at 10.5m wide and 6.3m high, this was a difficult installation in an area where the headroom was very tight. A crane was required to lift the shutter into position after opening two holes in the building’s roof so lifting chains could be dropped through to facilitate moving the shutter into position. The solutionHart was contracted by Sir Robert McAlpine to supply and install a range of industrial doors at the Taylors of Harrogate site.  This included the installation of the three-tonne insulated roller shutter completing a work package of over 40 doors. The success The installation of the shutter concluded a project which Hart was involved with through Sir Robert McAlpine and which saw almost every Hart door product installed – from Speedor high speed doors to fire shutters, security shutters and steel personnel doors.

Yorkshire Water Security Shutters

Yorkshire Water Security Shutters

Hart Door Systems Ltd

Hart Door Systems has worked with a number of UK water companies to improve site security and efficiency. In particular the need to secure remote and often unstaffed but vitally important sites. Water sites have particular needs which require reliable and secure doors and the engineering expertise that Hart offer. The challenge This Yorkshire Water had 3 existing un-secure horizontal doors. These manual operation doors had fallen into disrepair and presented a security risk. Automatic doors were required to provide efficiency and security. The solution The Hart solution was to install its roller shutters, fitted in a customised way to suit the environment and to ensure security, ease of installation and minimum disruption. One of the things Hart has significant experience in is fitting doors that add security features but without the need for additional structural works. Disruption was further minimised by working in collaboration with the main construction contractor, scheduling the work to fit in with not only the day to day operations, but other work happening concurrently.Because of Hart’s experience on sites such, existing vital operations were worked around – which continued during the removal of the old doors and installation of the new. The success Several more SR rated doors are planned at the same site, so that the company can replicate the success and the improved security that has been provided.Hart has gained invaluable experience working with various water companies installing high specification SR rated security shutters. These doors meet an established set of standards to prevent unauthorised access and have been tested and shown to minimise the threat of certain intruder attacks. For those sites that need constant access by people and / or traffic, the Speedor brand of doors can provide additional high speed operation. Speedor and SR doors can be used in combination to give complete flexibility and the best of both worlds.

Hart Door Systems Ltd

Hart has supplied hundreds of industrial doors to infrastructure projects both across the UK and internationally.Project/doors:9 Electric insulated roller shutters14 Speedor Super high speed doorsThe challengeOld rail shutters are unreliable with a potential to free fall due to mechanical failure. Doors that are past their ‘asset life expectancy’ should be replaced to ensure up to date legislations are met. These areas tend to have varying traffic and need to be secure for safety. These dangerous situations can be remedied by replacing with new doors designed for purpose. The solutionHart completed a major contract to replace old and unreliable shutters at the Stewarts Lane depot, Battersea. The contract included the removal of old doors and re-installation of nine doors of varying sizes, the largest being 8.5m wide and 4.7m. Safedrive motors delivered quiet and smooth operation despite the size and improved security and safety for staff. The successHart replaced 14 of it’s own Speedors installed at Laira Depot, Plymouth which were still operational after 22 years. JS Air Curtains prove Blooming Marvellous

JS Air Curtains prove Blooming Marvellous

JS Air Curtains

A chill store air curtain installed outside a cold store at Zwetloots Ltd, “The Flower People” in Bedfordshire, has proved virtually 100% effective at sealing the chilled air inside, with the door left open. Zwetsloots needed to keep its blooms at a temperature of 4-5°C to maintain freshness and provide easy access in and out of the cold store, whilst not chilling the adjoining area.Tests showed that with the air curtain turned on above the open door, the floor temperature directly outside the cold store remained above 12°C – exactly the same as the ambient temperature outside the store! The 2,200m² cold store is linked to a staff-occupied packing area by a fast-acting shutter door. The problem had been the movement of warm air, at a high level, into the chill store when the shutter door was open, which effectively pushed the heavy cold air out into the staff area. For the staff, this provided an uncomfortable and draughty working environment and Zwetsloots was faced with increasing costs in order to maintain the chill store’s cool temperature.David Zwetsloot, Technical Director at Zwetsloots, commented, “We trialed the air curtain for two weeks as we were concerned that the down-draught would damage the flowers and that it wouldn't create a seal across the door. However, the down-draught had no effect on the flowers and it sealed up the fridge and ambient working area very well – a lot better than I expected it to.“Tests showed that there weren’t any cold spots near the entrance when compared to the ambient temperature for the rest of the building. Staff that work near to the chill store used to complain that it was cold. However, since the air curtain was installed we’ve not received a single complaint.”Mr Zwetsloot continued, “It’s difficult to quantify a financial benefit from any energy savings at this time. However, based on maintenance for the existing fast acting roller door alone, the payback period will be between 8 and 17 months.”The air curtain is specially designed to create a continual wall of ambient air over the doorway. It is installed outside the room, directly above the door, and switches on when the roller door opens. For flexibility, it can be fitted to variable heights up to 5m. Since it is so efficient at controlling the flow of air through a cold store entrance, it quickly pays for itself when installed on any cold store that is open for an hour or more per day.Zwetsloots is the UK’s leading supplier of cut flowers to the multiples, wholesalers and retail florists. In peak times, the company produces up to 1.6 million bouquets a week and obtains flowers from countries around the world, including Holland, Spain, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Ecuador, USA and, of course, the UK.

Queenborough School & Nursery - Coniston wall mounted canopy

Able Canopies Ltd

The BriefQueenborough School and Nursery in Kent were looking to upgrade their outdoor space to create an all-weather outdoor learning and play area adjacent to one of their classrooms. As such, they contracted Carré Consultancy to source a supplier to help them create this new area and they chose Able Canopies. They wanted to create an outdoor area which could be used all year round. This created some challenges; outdoor spaces can become wet and slippery during rainy periods and too much exposure to UV rays can be harmful to our health. The SolutionThe staff at Queenborough wanted the area to look good whilst also offering functionality for lessons and play. As such, we proposed a 17.04m x 4.65m Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy that was supported by rear steel goal posts as the supporting wall was not suitable for a wall mounted structure. It was agreed that the canopy should feature side fills on both ends to block wind driving in from either side of the canopy and would be enclosed along the front with secure roller shutters and commercial fire doors. As we offer the whole package, we were also able to include the supply and installation of soft play safety surfacing underneath and leading to the canopy.

EN81-3 Dumbwaiter Service Lift - Buon Apps Restaurant, Otley

Shorts Industries Ltd (Shorts Lifts)

Within the picturesque market town of Otley (West Yorkshire), on the banks of the River Wharfe and in the shadow of Otley Chevin, our EN81-3 BKG Dumbwaiter Service Lift assists Buon Apps, a hugely popular family-run Italian restaurant. The restaurant is over two floors, with the kitchen on the ground floor and the main seating on the upper. The client required two Shorts-BKG Dumbwaiter Services Lifts to operate as separate “clean” and “dirty” lifts. One carries freshly cooked food from the kitchens, and the other takes dirty plates and equipment back to the pot-wash.Our New Lifts Distribution team worked closely with Liftco Ltd to specify, design and supply a custom-built 50KG Dumbwaiter Service Lift and a 100kg Advantage Dumbwaiter with heated car floor and adjacent entry car, which is available from stock within our Bradford warehouse.Key elements were:Quick lead time – Our Advantage model was available to collect three days after the order.Heated Car Floor – To ensure the food arrives hot, straight from the professional kitchen.Roller Car Shutter – To provide extra protection to the food and other items by stopping anything falling out of the lift car during transit. What is also uncommon with this specification is the requirement for two adjacent entrances on floor one to allow loading and unloading from two different sides of the lift car simultaneously. The restaurant wanted a set of dumbwaiters that could be relied upon at the busiest times to ensure the high-quality service of Buon Apps was never compromised. Our EN81-3 BKG Dumbwaiter Service Lifts are relied upon daily by the UK’s top bars, restaurants, hotels, cafes, and retailers, as well as in numerous other commercial and residential applications. Our dumbwaiters, fine-tuned over the last 60 years, are easy to use while providing optimum performance and long-term reliability.
Concrete Shuttering

Concrete Shuttering

Sundeala

A case study was carried out to determine the viability of utilising our HD board as Concrete Shuttering. The main benefits being its eco-friendly of course however a major consideration for the current shuttering products is their disposal once the concrete is set. As it considered contaminated any wood product used in this application is generally put in the skip. Any of our boards can be left in the ground to compost down as there are no added formaldehyde or bitumen-based adhesives, so it is safe to be let in the ground. It’s also very flexible over distance so can be used to create some amazing curves to any concrete base. This case study went extremely well and the builder carrying out the work reported back saying it was very easy to install and an amazing product all round.

Bolton Gate's Contour Shutters provide fire and security at Newcastle International Airport Duty-Free Area

Bolton Gate Company

When the Duty-Free Retail Area of the airport was recently refurbished, the design incorporated large sweeping curves on plan which also incorporated the shopfronts. The demise line of the shopfronts also entailed that they needed the facility to be closed off outside trading hours from a security point of view in addition to each unit being an individual fire compartment. Bolton Gate’s Contour shutters were specified which operate laterally and coil into a box at one end - this innovative product can describe an infinite number of bends and curves whilst closing off openings up to 100 metres wide.
