Heriot-Watt is a specialist university, renowned for its innovative research. The James Watt Building, in the Edinburgh campus, has recently undergone a number of improvements, with one of the more notable changes being the addition of new hardwood flooring. Atkinson & Kirby’s Engineered Oak range of flooring in the shade ‘natural’ was specified, to compliment the building’s rich history and enhance the overall look and feel. With the high level of footfall the James Watt Building receives on a daily basis, the inclusion of a durable, long-lasting and eye-catching flooring was a much needed addition.

Appreciating the recent trend of industrial style steel screens being incorporated in modern interiors, Cherie Lee, Director of Cherie Lee Interiors, chose to include the look within one of her latest amazing projects. The Clement W20 suite of steel frames in RAL 7021 black grey (matt) was chosen as the correct product and colour to complement the décor. The use of steel screens internally allows maximum solar gain and adds a striking feature. The result is stunning and the client is very happy with the final result.

Framlingham College was founded in 1864.The land on which the college was built was originally part of the Castle estate, left by Sir Thomas Hitcham in 1636 to Pembroke Hall, Cambridge. Included in the Governors’ recent £4million development initiative was the restoration of the original metal windows within the schools boarding accommodation. Clement were chosen to sensitively replace the windows in both the Stradbrook and Rendlesham buildings. To replicate the unusual, shaped head existing windows, the Clement W20 range of steel windows was specified with vertical pivots and genuine T glazing bars.

This spectacular Victorian home in the market town of Epping has been recently redesigned by Cherie Lee Interiors. Part of their client's brief was to design every space with visibility and access to the garden and with this in mind, an immense 5 metre wide steel and glass partition was incorporated into the plans, to divide the hallway and open plan kitchen. The bespoke screen includes 18 panes of glass and a feature kick panel along the bottom. Pyroswiss 30 minute integrity glass was used to increase fire protection. Design: Cherie Lee Interiors. This has required the University to invest heavily into expanding its sporting facilities to continue their success. Alongside the students the England netball team use the sport facilities by making the university one of their Intensive Netball Training Centres. Such rigorous and frequent training needs a floor that can offer reliability. The England Netball team found just that with the Helsinki system and European Oak surface.

Our stainless steel drainage systems are the ideal choice due to our lightweight push-fit pipes and fittings are easy to handle and install, and provide rapid discharge of rainwater and waste water.

Recently, Littleworld have opened a second facility in a nearby village and required nursery cubicles for the newly renovated building. ‘We have installed new washrooms as part of the whole renovation,’ nursery manager Sarah Belcher explains, ‘All the rooms were re-configured and we have a nappy changing area with 2 cubicles and another toilet area with 3 cubicles.’

The affordability, strength, adaptability and quality of manufacture of the Capral Apartment Collection made it our ‘material of choice’ for the Adagio high-rise.

In the end over 820m² of Decra®Set porous resin bound paving has been installed, using a 6mm Natural Buff blend to finish. The SUDS compliant porous nature of the product will mean that standing water and ponding should be all but 100% eliminated without the requirement for costly and on occasions unsightly additional drainage provision.

Timber frame manufacturer Scotts of Thrapston has used fermacell on a pioneering school build. Scotts of Thrapston in Northamptonshire have 95 years’ expertise in the equestrian and garden buildings sector but recently decided to try and break into the education sector by supplying modular classroom buildings. They specified 153 of fermacell’s 1200mm x 2400mm x 12.5mm boards for their first such project, Weldon Church of England Primary School, in their home county, and have not looked back since, also using fermacell for another school and an office building.

Genesis has recently installed NRES.16 at the Gielgud Theatre in the prestigious Shaftesbury Avenue in London. The resin has been used for their front box office steps to increase visual awareness and add anti-slip properties to the busy Theatre without distracting from the ornate Victorian design. The resin blends in perfectly to it’s surroundings and looks like it has been part of the original build. The steps required templating and bespoke stencils creating to match the curved design of the steps and we are pleased that the Theatre trusted Genesis with the project.

This historic building in Clerkenwell was constructed in 1882 as the London premises of Lincolnshire engineering firm, Marshall Sons & Co, inspiring the recently building name, “The Bondworks”. In 2007, a full refurbishment was completed incorporating an underfloor air conditioning system. In 2018, a further refurbishment was completed and the building now offers six floors of warehouse style accommodation, featuring exposed brickwork walls and optimum natural light due to the prominent corner position. AET Flexible Space supplied upgraded controls and new Fantiles for the speculative Category-A accommodation.

Neaco have supplied a contemporary balustrade specification for a 60-bed residential care home in Barrow. The £7m Parkview Gardens care home has replaced four older Cumbria Care homes as part of a wider modernisation programme of care for older people in the Barrow area. Architects Alston Murphy Associates specified Neaco’s powder coated aluminium balustrade with glass infill panel. The building was designed to provide outdoor space on every floor, including first floor terraces featuring Neaco’s glazed balustrade installed to an extended height to provide additional safety. The terraces also include Neaco’s Techdek aluminium grilles as terrace decking.

KPMG’s new Edinburgh headquarters concluded after a period of regenerative construction and development, split between 2 phases. The intention to reflect the history and people which make Edinburgh an iconic city. Phase one included creating a space for employees to work as employee wellness was at the forefront of design during this phase. When working on phase two, we installed partitions to the cafés and client suites. KPMG’s objective is to have an environment ‘that encourages interaction, collaboration and communication’.

No.1 Hardman Street is located at the heart of Spinningfields in Manchester City Centre. This recently completed building provides 5 floors of office space and is a piece of contemporary architecture which sits comfortably alongside both its historic neighbours and the large glazed buildings of this commercial area. Being one of the smaller buildings of the Spinningfields redevelopment, the design seeks to maximise its visual impact and optimise the site. With work complete by Eric Wright Construction in July 2014, and cladding sub-contractor Cover Structure Ltd, the distinctive external materials provide a strong visual identity.

As part of this refurbishment the central entrance of the golf club required an impressive eye catching finish to their traditional style Victorian staircase with a unique large curved bottom step.

Drawing on over 20 years of experience installing operable walls, Style was recently challenged to come up with a solution to divide a large meeting area, despite there being no suitable structure in the ceiling to utilise as a fixing point. After some lateral thinking and close communication with the client, a non-structural timber frame was created for support, with the weight of the folding wall being transferred to the ground via a surface mounted floor track. A Stylefold 120 folding wall system was chosen as the only operable wall that could realistically accommodate the room structure.

As part of recent paving improvement works the bollards have been upgraded to high security versions, but these plain steel sections alone would be out of keeping with the memorial. The solution was to cover the steel cores with decorative sleeves, designed to complement the Doric-style fluted columns. Furnitubes developed a 3d digital model of the bollard sleeve, from which a new pattern was created to cast the sleeves in aluminum, which is a light enough material to make lifting over the steel posts easier, and with the benefit of having an appearance very similar to other traditional cast iron products.

Leicestershire County Council granted planning permission for an extension of the existing school to increase pupil capacity. Brookfield is a recent acquisition that the University of Leicester is developing to offer supplementary and upgraded teaching facilities and office accommodation for support staff. When selecting seating for the scheme, landscape architects Barry Chinn Associates truly embraced the modular concept of RailRoad, so much so that the setting out of the perimeter planting beds was dictated by the seating sizes. Three separate seats were supplied, each comprising different radii modules that introduce a refreshing informality to the courtyard. The seating is further enhanced by the addition and informal placement of backrests, armrests and tablet surfaces.

For this unique space, Nando’s commissioned a bespoke floor that combined rhombi in tones of brown and smoky grey, with accents of copper leaf. The result was a striking floor in an eye catching design. Handmade and hand finished to specification in our Cheshire workshops, our team worked closely with STAC Architecture to design and create the floor to a tight deadline. 20mm and 2-ply thick, the floor was hand finished with naked skin lacquer for a natural yet extremely durable look.

This modern barn conversion in the Cheshire countryside uses Northbank Pine, one of our recent Rare Finds, throughout the space, seamlessly flowing from room to room. These wide, long planks were reclaimed from a warehouse on the banks of the River Mersey. The boards were restored, then brushed and finished with naked skin lacquer to ensure there was no colour change to the pale, elevated grain. Claremont, from our Bold Surfaces portfolio, was used on the ceilings. Painted and then worn down by hand to show unique saw marks, it gives a minimalistic, modern aesthetic that complements the pale walls.

Both FSC certified and meeting the EUTR regulations, our responsibly sourced engineered oak flooring highlighted the modern interior ethos of Roman House. The lacquer finish allows the residents of Roman House to easily clean and maintain their beautiful oak floor with minimal impact on their lives.
