Crown Paints make community contribution for Enfield paint project

A partnership between Crown Paints, Mitie Property Services and Enfield Council has led to a special presentation for residents. For the last two years, the three organisations have been working together on redecoration works across Enfield Council’s property portfolio. To mark the milestone, a bench made from recycled paint containers has been given to the community by Crown Paints. Some 4,000 litres of products including Crown Trade Stronghold Smooth Masonry, Crown Trade Protective Coatings, Sadolin Superdec and Crown Trade Timonox Flame Retardant Coatings have all been used on the council’s social housing schemes.

Crown Paints has achieved top marks for a prestigious school in the historic city of York. Bootham School, an independent day and boarding school for 3 to 18 year olds, has harnessed the expertise of Crown Trade to protect their historic building. The windows of Fox House, which is situated on Portland Street in the city centre, were in need of attention and the Crown Paints Specification Team were called in to help. After a site survey by the team, Crown Trade Stronghold Exterior Gloss and Crown Trade Stronghold Exterior Primer Undercoat were specified for the job.

Crown’s earthbalance scheme sets out the company’s commitment to being more sustainable and less wasteful as well as helping customers and staff make responsible decisions. The earthbalance scheme covers all aspects of Crown’s business and applies to all staff and operations at Crown’s two UK manufacturing plants and network of Crown Decorating Centres. Crown has reduced its overall electricity consumption by 15 per cent, reduced packaging waste by approximately 15 per cent, recycled more than 800 tonnes of paint cans and donated 112 benches made using recycled paint cans through social enterprise NIMTECH.

Crown Paints 2018 Sustainability Report looks to the future

Crown Paints has set out its environmental targets and looks back at the successes achieved in 2017 in its annual Sustainability Report. The report brings together all aspects of Crown Paints’ commitment to the environment. Crown has significantly reduced its water usage and waste, and successfully implemented a new ‘Safety Excellence’ programme. Crown Paints has achieved the transition to the revised ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems standard, ISO 14001:2015, which has more emphasis on top management involvement and continual improvement. Six Crown Paints products now hold verified Environmental Product Declarations complying with European Standard EN 15804.

Crown Paints announce Apprentice Decorator of the Year finalists

Eight aspiring apprentice decorators will soon be going head-to-head in the final of this year’s national Crown Paints Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition held during the WorldSkills UK LIVE event in Birmingham. The annual competition, which is now in its 39th year, is organised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and sponsored by Crown Paints along with other industry leaders such as British Gypsum. Hundreds of apprentices currently enrolled on painting and decorating courses competed this year, hoping to hone their skills and set themselves apart from their peers.

Crown Paints Specification Services support for tall order

A Suffolk-based local authority turned to Crown Paints Specification Services to transform the tallest building in the most easterly settlement of the UK. St. Peter’s Court – in the coastal town of Lowestoft, Suffolk – was in need of re-decoration and Waveney District Council wanted a product that would last for the long-term. Crown Paints came out to the site, which comprises of 90 flats over 15 floors, and after an extensive inspection and review of requirements, specified 3,600 litres of Sandtex Trade 365 All Weather Masonry Paint for the project.

Specialist school receives bench from Crown Paints

AN ABERDEEN-based specialist school has received a recycled bench from Crown Paints as a lasting legacy of the relationship built up with the city’s council. The bench, which is made from recycled paint containers, was presented to students at Orchard Brae School to celebrate the ongoing work between Crown Paints and Aberdeen City Council. Caroline Stirton is the Executive Head Teacher at Orchard Brae School, which caters for children affected by severe and complex needs. She said: “We’re really impressed with our new bench and it provides the ideal spot for the children to relax.”

Staff, parents and pupils at a Hull primary school joined forces to give a piece of community art a new lease of life. A large-scale mural at Thoresby Primary School has been restored back to its former glory with support from Crown Paints. The works were carried out across a weekend as part of a transformation of the school’s outdoor area for pupils. Hayley Potts, of Thoresby Primary School, said: “The mural plays a central part in celebrating our school’s history and the children felt passionately about improving and updating it.

The regional heats of the prestigious Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition, sponsored by Crown Paints, have completed and eight decorators are ready to take part in the national final in November. Apprentice decorators from Scotland, Wales, the North West, Yorkshire and Humberside, West Midlands, and the South West will go on to compete in the final, held during the WorldSkills UK LIVE event at Birmingham’s NEC. Crown Paints has donated a bench to Morfa Cadfan, a sheltered housing scheme in Tywyn, Gwynedd. Part of Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd (CCG), North Wales’ largest housing association, the communal areas have been redecorated in conjunction with the Tywyn Project. The Crown Paints Specification Team visited the site at the end of last year to scope out colour schemes and the best products for the job. Novus Property Solutions carried out the work, which saw Crown Trade Timonox Acrylic Eggshell being applied to the walls of all the corridors and stairwells as well as the reception and lounge.

Hull’s Crown Paints in celebratory mood after industry accolade

The manufacturing centre in Sculcoates Lane has been awarded the prestigious Coatings Care Overall Best Performer Award by national trade body the British Coatings Federation. A specially branded container celebrating the donation – relating to in excess of 150 tins – was produced by Crown Paints for the event. Lincoln students get confident with colour at Bell Decorating Academy thanks to Crown Paints

Working with Bell Decorating Group, Crown Paints marked the launch of the first Bell Decorating Academy in Lincoln with a morning of workshops for the students of Lincoln College. Representatives from Bell Decorating Group and Crown Paints were on hand to answer any questions the students had. The event allowed 27 full-time learners from the college’s painting and decorating courses to learn more about how to choose colour and the factors that play into it. Students were also given a demonstration of the benefits of Crown Trade primers. Products were donated for the students to practice with after.

Crown Paints sets the scene for the Turner Prize during Hull UK City of Culture 2017

Crown Paints’ colour expertise has helped provide a bespoke backdrop for this year’s shortlisted Turner Prize artists to display their work. The Turner Prize is being presented at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, with an exhibition of work by this year's shortlisted artists: Hurvin Anderson, Andrea Büttner, Lubaina Himid and Rosalind Nashashibi. Running until 7 January 2018, the exhibition is a highlight of Hull UK City of Culture 2017. The curators of Turner Prize 2017 have worked with Crown Paints’ colour matching experts at Hull’s Crown Decorating Centre for the exhibition.

Re-painting of external cladding

Advice was sought from our distributor in NI for this large cladding re-paint project. The building is located in a coastal environment and was clad in Plastisol Coated Cladding which had begun to deteriorate and fail. The client was looking for a durable long-term colour stable system capable of extending the maintenance period and protecting the existing coatings and cladding for another 10-20 years. Temadur two pack polyurethane cladding maintenance system was chosen for this project which provides a tough well proven high performance finish which is extremely colour and gloss stable.

Self clean paint and mineral thin coat render restore 19th century hotel

The Great Western Hotel, a landmark dating from the 19th century has been re-finished in ProRend’s breathable Mineraltex render and Self-Clean Masonry Paint. Sitting in a high-traffic area, the light colour chosen might have been a problem - but by using ProRend Mineraltex, a breathable and lightweight thin coat render, finished with Self-Clean Masonry Paint the hotel will maintain its impressive exterior.
