Project OverviewClient: Mather & SmithFinish: Powdertech Anomatch™A prestigious residential block in London’s Knightsbridge was designed to feature stripes, or ‘fins’, of beautiful anodised aluminium running vertically up the building. The metallic sheen of these vertical fins would form a continual line giving a stylish and contrasting definition to the pale red brick of the exterior. The window sills would also be anodised aluminium.The ProblemThe aluminium fins are 4m in length and intended to be seamlessly joined after anodising to provide the effect of one continuous metallic stripe. It quickly became apparent that the anodising process was not able to provide a consistent shade on the metal. Every strip was a slightly different colour and once erected on the building the patchwork effect was untidy and unsatisfactory. The smallest inconsistencies in shade, within an area intended to be homogenous, will mar an intended visual effect.The SolutionPowdertech Anomatch™ achieves a similar appearance as anodising, enhancing the metal with a soft sheen. Furthermore, it provides excellent colour stability and consistency between batches, regardless of the origin of the metal, and negates any differences in base material grain. Powdertech Corby became involved in the project when the developer had aluminium fins and window sills in different stages of preparation, many already anodised, some part-finished and others unprepared. Eternit profile 6 fibre cement roof sheets in Laurel Green and natural Yorkshire boarding, was specified on Marston Equestrian Building to help the building blend in with the surrounding agricultural land. As well as providing excellent noise and thermal insulation, the composition of the high strength fibre cement reduces condensation within the building, which is important when multiple horses and riders are exercising inside.

A host of products from Johnstone’s have been used to help restore Portsmouth F.C.’s Fratton Park stadium to its former glory. The decorators have been aided significantly by the performance qualities of products from Johnstone’s range. These included Covaplus Vinyl Matt, for its washable finish with excellent opacity and coverage, Stormshield Smooth Masonry in team colour Pompey Blue on brickwork, Flortred for flooring areas and Smooth Metal Paint to protect metal barriers in the lower North and West Stands.

Specified because of it's unique BBA Approval and Latent Defects Insurance Guarantee, Asbestoseal was applied to this asbestos cement roof in Warwickshire. The roof was first steam cleaned using 150°c steam, removing all moss and lichen. Metal fixings were treated with Liquasil's corrosion primer and then sealed using Non-Sag Sealer. The entire roof surface was then coated with Asbestoseal 20 to provide long term protection and add considerably to the life of the roof. The metal gutters were lined with Liquasil's seamless silicone gutter lining system

St Peter’s Church of England School places a strong emphasis on the community of its students by offering everyone the chance to achieve their full potential through focused, ambitious, planned, and flexible options. Through education, wisdom, and compassion, the school aims to improve students’ moral character and promote a feeling of community.Here at Helmsman, we supplied and installed 175 four-compartment laminate metal lockers. The specification of the essential school lockers was 1775mm high, 300mm wide, and 450mm deep. The school requested for the fabrication of the lockers to have slopping tops. Sloping tops are a common choice for school lockers because they reduce dust buildup and allow for storage without setting a risk to students’ safety if something falls off.With the essential school lockers were requested to have a metal body coated in our standard metal colour of ‘Ice’. Whereas the doors were laminate, powder coated in Blue Galaxy, Electric Blue, and Ozone. The lockers were completed with oval laminated number plates above the Camlocks, the school also requested for the locks to have master keys. Camlock is a great lock and ideal for schools as students are guaranteed that their belongings are secure and safe.Laminate Metal lockers are a great option for school lockers since they are trendy and popular. Additionally, the material is able to hold up better to scratches, marks, and blemishes over the long term.

210 Metres of Unifold Gutters was installed at the DHL Supply Chain, Barming Depot in Aylesford.Installed by Blenheim Roofing, the project was a full strip & re-sheet of an asbestos cement roof.During initial surveys it was discovered that historically, the existing asbestos gutters were prone to leaks and overflow issues into the building.Unifold was not only used to line the gutters to cure the leaks but also increase the capacity.

In 2009 the redevelopment master plan was prepared by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. The metal exterior has a potential lifetime of well over 200 years, hence it’s very important to use the right insulation with a proven long term thermal performance.With FOAMGLAS® thermal ageing does not take place. It is the ideal insulation to be combined with roof and façade materials such as KME Tecu Bronze.For the pitched roof FOAMGLAS® READY BOARD T4+ was bonded and sealed to the timber board structure with PC®11 adhesive. Metal Plates type PC® SP 150/150 were inserted into the FOAMGLAS® READY BOARD. A 180 g/ m2 sanded bitumen membrane was torch applied onto the surface.

AATi supplied a staggering 2500 metres (1.55 miles) of cast metal anti-slip stair nosings for the major re-development at London Bridge Station! AATi worked closely with Laing O’Rourke to develop a phased delivery schedule in order to hit key milestones during the projects construction from January 2016 right through to December 2017. Due to the unique ability to manufacture bespoke cast metal products, AATi were on hand to resolve an issue on the project by designing a bespoke nosing to fit around the handrail posts throughout the station.

To create a Blob... CHALLENGE For the design of a Texaco service station on the highway near Antwerp the architect decided he wanted to create a Blob (Binary large objects) architectural design. The service station consists of three functional lobes that together look like an oil stain. The actual gas stations are covered with 4 lobe-shaped canopies. To accentuate this futuristic design the architect wanted to create liquid formed shapes in a metallic look. As the walls of the main building were planned using a polurea metallic finishing coating the architect sought a suitable compatible material to finish the rest of his Blob roof surfaces. SOLUTION Synthetic roofing membranes are the most flexible materials on the market and are suited to waterproof almost all possible roof shapes. For this particular project the silver coloured RENOLIT ALKORPLAN membrane was the best solution. This silver membrane is produced with a protective coating creating a roofing membrane that is easy to clean. The RENOLIT ALKORPLAN Metallic membranes combine excellent durability with added aesthetical appearance.

Calming colours and patterns have helped to create a special environment for mothers and babies at Glan Clwyd Hospital. Forbo Flooring Systems’ Sphera Element vinyl collection was specified throughout the Mother and Baby Unit, due to its bright and fresh appearance, high-performance and durability. Easy to work with, the Sphera sheets were laid throughout the unit and hand cut to shape to create a beautiful butterfly designs.

Pengwern Farm, in Denbighshire, North Wales, run by Huw in partnership with his mother, has 400 milking cows and 200 followers, on 500 acres. High yielders are housed all year round and the whole herd is calved between July and January.Huw decided to use Profile 6 fibre cement sheets on the new shed to help keep moisture levels to a minimum and ensure a good, dry atmosphere.

There was a requirement to cut down directly incident sunlight, the idea came up to work with DucoSun Wing in front of the façade. These large, wing-shaped louvre blades were made of a black perforated sheet that was made in special non-standard sizes for this project. This system therefore works as solar shading on the one hand as well as fulfilling an architectural function on the other, which is a defining factor in the architectural appearance of the office building.

Seren is a student accommodation and commercial development in Swansea, designed by Corstophine & Wright architects and completed using Anvil metal cladding from Taylor Maxwell.

ASF manufactured the 5 rail quayside post for this project. The client wanted the baseplate system for a parapet style application, but using a full height post.The posts are manufactured in 100% recycled cast iron, made from old brake discs, and they system meets the required parapet loadings for the application.Posts were finished in a metal shield solvent based wet paint which is the best way to protect any metal in a marine or waterside environment. The rails were left galvanised to offer a contrast with the post, which does offer an effective visual once fully installed.

Using our Elements patterns, the installation looks sleek and modern and is protected for years to come.

Barrisol® is improving the look of Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital in London, England. The cafeteria is transformed into a magical and friendly place. Designed by the architect Llewelyn Davies Yeang, who took inspiration from the Disney universe, the ceiling is a Barrisol® translucent Blanc Venus along with the Barrisol® Lumiere Color® technology. Using the fabrics this way, coloured bands (translucent sheets) soften the atmosphere and bring the benefits of the chromotherapy.

Elliptical on plan and angled in profile, The SSE Hydro’s domed roof required over 12,750 sqm of naturally curved tapered Kalzip® sheets in lengths of up to 25 metres installed in six concentric, almost circular bands. The façade of this amphitheatre-inspired building is 15 metres high at the rear rising to 33 metres at the south-facing front elevation with the central apex of the roof being 45 metres above ground level.

The Birmingham New Street refurbishment completely re-imagined the Pallasades shopping centre situated above the station. SAS designed, supplied and installed several bespoke metal ceilings specified for the lower retail area within the mall: A mall link feature installed below glass reinforced gypsum features in the mall’s access areas.A lozenge shaped, metal can ceiling with integrated lighting, a slatted SAS700 linear ceiling and SAS320 alongside linear grilles. The aim was to create an ideal meeting place which would serve as a gateway to Birmingham. A massive 50 million people are expected through the door each year.

Washroom designed and installed unisex Superloos within a new shared workspace building. Each self-contained cubicle includes a toilet, vanity unit and hand drying facilities behind a full height cubicle door and are an excellent solution for an office where space is at a premium. Washroom's Concerto duct panelling, faced with shiny black brushed metallic effect high pressure laminate, was installed behind the toilets and underneath the sinks in each superloo cubicle. The vanities are manufactured from white Corian, set on a bespoke black metallic framework which also includes additional storage underneath as well as an inset waste bin.

SAS International delivered unrivalled metal ceiling solutions for a stunning refurbishment to The Atrium Building, Sandyford. SAS was selected for its unique SAS740i linear ceiling solution with integrated lighting. This ceiling design, characterised by floating rafts, influenced the entire atrium design. Specified in a contemporary grey, SAS740i rafts were suspended 20m below the glass atrium room through a stainless-steel cable system. Black SAS130 Mesh tiles were also installed to contribute to the industrial architecture. Completed in November 2018, SAS designed and delivered timeless metal ceiling solutions that will bring the building well into the next phase of its lifetime.

A1 Retail Park near Biggleswade has a curved canopy supported by steel columns. Metal columns would not suit the look of the shopping park and wooden posts would require frequent maintenance. 22 aluminium casings up to 8 metres high made from 78 semi-circular sections were coated in wood effect finish were produced to enclose the canopy supports. PWF replicates the appearance of wood with variation in colour, grain density and grain pattern. By using PWF, designers can combine the look of wood with the strength and practicality of metal. Expensive timber need not be used, an environmentally sound decision.

Calm and non-clinical environment for busy ICUChallengeHospital environments are created to heal; yet supporting both physical and mental health needs in clinical environments can be challenging. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Harrogate District Hospital required a refurbishment to its walls and wanted a non-clinical design, but with hygienic properties. Approach The unit had different areas with different functions – it needed to have hygienic, clean, wipe down walls which were also robust and could withstand bumps and scuffs. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the refurbishment needed to be completed quickly with minimum downtime to ICU. The team also wanted the unit to have a non-clinical feel. Solution Altro Whiterock White, Altro Whiterock Chameleon, and Altro Whiterock Digiclad (Custom) were selected for the walls in the ICU. The hospital’s paediatric unit had Altro hygienic wall sheets installed previously and knew they were robust and trusted products. The ICU staff and project design team took time to select artwork of cherry blossom branches that would be cheerful yet calming for patients, as well as inspiring and uplifting for hardworking staff. The images were printed to create the Altro Whiterock Digiclad (Custom) wall sheets.

Optima FC in 3.0mm PPC Aluminium 1050 grade has been used in the completion on The Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group on Nottingham University's Jubilee Campus.Home to three purpose-built labs – High Power, Power Electronics, and Drives – the building was built after PEMC secured investment of £18million, including £1.5m from the Wolfson Foundation and £4m from Propulsion Futures.The 5,400m² development is internationally renowned and one of the largest on its field.FEA analysis was carried out by Sotech as non-standard sheets were used due to the sheer size of some panels. The purpose was to ensure enough stiffening resistance had been built into the sheets, to ensure the larger panels were safe and compliant.The project was completed during the first lockdown (due to Covid 19) meaning operations were paused during the project. Sotech and Deane Roofing worked closely together to keep as tightly as possible to the original timeline.Josh Stevens, Estimator at Sotech said: “This was my first project working with Deane Roofing, which was an absolute pleasure. Education specialists Cottrell & Vermeulen Architecture specified Eternit profiled sheeting on the roof and facade to bring both aesthetics and practicality to the striking redevelopment of a nursery school in East London, Kintore Way Children’s Centre.The multi-coloured roof of the new, snaking extension, which focuses on green and blues to reflect the canopy of trees in a central courtyard and the nearby river, probably most reflects Cottrell & Vermeulen’s distinctive style which is typically promoted in the use of colour, shapes and components in their raw state.

The Contemporary Art museum of Munich was inaugurated last May. Its architecture is based on a design and ecological concept. The architect Sauerbruch Hutton chose Barrisol Lumière® to light and enhance the exposed works of the XXth century among which the Andy Wahrol's famous paintings. Indeed, Barrisol Lumière® diffuses the light in a sweet and homogeneous way on the whole exhibition space. Furthermore, the Barrisol sheets are 100%, recyclable and are so perfectly adapted in this modern building turned to sustainable environment.

Eternit’s fibre cement open protected ridges were used to create an effective ventilation system in the bull accommodation unit at Knocknagael Bull Stud Farm - ensuring a constant outflow of stale, moist air. The width of the air gap created by the open ridge was specifically designed for the number of bulls and size of the building. Profile 6 sheeting from Eternit was also specified for the roof, thanks to its durability and low maintenance costs, as well as its noise insulation properties.

Triton has supplied 3,280kg of TT Admix, its BBA certified concrete waterproofing system, to a prestigious new build project in West London. The project is a new car dealership situated between the M4 flyover and the site of Brentwood FC's new stadium. The construction comprises a watertight concrete base with welded sheet piled walls and a watertight concrete capping beam to provide a Type B integral waterproofing solution to BS 8102 (2009). On top of the slab is a steel framed structure.
