Classic singles were used in bathrooms to create more space where the arc of standard hinged doors would have otherwise encroached on the space. This allowed more space for larger shower enclosures and enhanced room layouts. CALA Homes Sold on Tobermore Complementary Facing Brick & Paving SolutionCALA Homes developed Kinleith Mill, a beautiful and distinctive new housing development in Currie to the west of Edinburgh, and in keeping with the housebuilders high quality standards, the team wanted to ensure that the most appropriate building and hard landscaping materials were sourced for the site. CALA Homes has been developing aspirational and award-winning homes across the UK for over 30 years, earning the company an excellent reputation. Tobermore’s Scottish Sales team introduced the housebuilder to the superior facing brick and paving products produced at Tobermore which surpassed expectation. Tobermore’s timeless Lansdowne facing brick was selected for incorporation on the properties at Kinleith Mill and vibrant Pedesta block paving was specified as a complementary hard landscaping solution.Alan Cole, Commercial Manager at CALA Homes, explained Yeoman McAllister Architects design concept for the project: “The design was inspired by the sites history and the idyllic location next to the Water of Leith in Currie.“The development offers a unique collection of four and five bedroom detached homes, three and four bedroom semi-detached houses, three bedroom waterside terraced properties and a select group of apartments, all new to the CALA portfolio.”The exteriors of the Kinleith Mill homes were designed with a combination finish of facing brick and dash. Alan explained that their choice of facing brick was made very easy when they were presented with Tobermore’s Lansdowne product. Lansdowne undergoes a tumbling manufacturing process that produces a charming weathered look and is ideal for applications that require a warm, elegant finish.Alan commented:“The aged aesthetic created a rustic look and we thought it was the perfect choice for the style and character desired at Kinleith Mill. While the inside of the properties were designed with modern interiors and amenities, we wanted to bring a touch of tradition to the exterior.Alan Cole, Commercial Manager at CALA Homes“In addition, we examined existing projects that Tobermore’s Lansdowne facing brick was used on and it was clear to see that the product performed well over time and showed no fading or discolouration.” Tobermore’s Lansdowne offers excellent colour retention capabilities due to the fact that the best iron oxide pigments available are sourced to produce the vibrant colours available within the range to ensure that colour is retained throughout the lifetime of a product.As well as the buildings, Lansdowne was incorporated on the bridge which connects the homes to the tranquil countryside surrounding the development. This created continuity across the aesthetics on site.The landscaping was an important element on site as the exterior of a property is crucial when appealing to new home buyers. Alan noted: “Paving was an obvious choice for the hard landscaping requirement as we knew it would enhance the appearance of the site more so than alternatives such as tarmac. Paving also offered benefits in that it is hard-wearing and should any blocks ever need replaced in the future, it is relatively easy and inexpensive to do so.”CALA Homes selected Tobermore’s Pedesta block paving as an attractive and versatile hard landscaping material. Pedesta is manufactured with a stunning, smooth finish and a rectangular profile that allows the creation of distinctive laying patterns. In the Peak District National Park with views of Cressbrook Dale and the Monsal trail, a thermal bridging solution developed by Owens Corning FOAMGLAS® is helping to deliver high levels of thermal performance for a new, modern home with a minimal space heating demand.The Quarry is a mostly single storey, green-roofed dwelling set on the site of a former shallow stone quarry. Working with John Pardey Architects (JPA), client Will Griffiths secured permission for a modern design faced with traditional materials to ensure a development that sits comfortably within the landscape.

Furnitubes designed and manufactured a number of AKRI retaining steel wall planters with ped and tray system for rooftop scheme in in Bexleyheath, south London. AKRI’s unique ped and tray system allows the planters to be left freestanding, sitting on a layer of waterproof membrane. Decking and pergolas were installed and benches were later retro-fitted to the planters to seamlessly integrate seating, manufactured in all steel to accommodate the required A fire rating, creating stunning landscaped roof tops across both buildings in the heart of a bustling city.

Aykon London One is London’s luxury venture and the first of its kind in Europe. It was designed in partnership with the iconic fashion house Versace Home. Its residents will be able to enjoy the magnificent urban landscapes as well as the serenity of its private winter gardens. The building’s design make Aykon London One, the most exclusive real estate investments in London. In this new project the Effisus Breather B membrane was used for moisture management and protection of the façade against damp, and Adjoin TI tapes for the sealing of overlap joints between membranes.

The Alder Hey Children’s Hospital won the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building award at the 2016 British Construction Awards. This building was designed to provide the best quality of healthcare possible in an environment that will develop the recovery process of patients. Costing over £250 million and named the ‘hospital under the hill’, it is designed to blend into the current environment and landscape incorporating grass from Springfield park in Liverpool curving up and over the building. This project was a connection of architecture and engineering to produce a natural and calming environment for the children and families.

In May 2017, a golden, futuristic style building docked at the heart of Media City in Salford Quays. People in the surrounding areas were intrigued by the unusual and eye-catching structure of the new branch of ‘The Alchemist’ – a trendy bar and restaurant chain from Living Ventures, renowned for its unusual and extravagant cocktails. Designing the surrounding landscaping to complement such an avant-garde building was a challenge. Hardscape reveals how it worked alongside Reid Architects and the Bolton-based construction company, Artez, to supply the best materials for this cutting-edge scheme.

Longwater Reach is a collection of 74 two, three and four bedroom houses at Green Park Village being created by St Edward, part of the Berkeley Group. Exterior design traits include classic HardiePlank® weatherboarding in colours including Arctic White and Midnight Black, providing a natural timber effect, long-lasting durability and a stunning finish. Coloured matched finely-finished balconies and window frames complete the look, with natural landscaping and pathways, all designed to blend in to the development’s calming waterside backdrop.

Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners, Leadenhall Building is a 47 storey office building in the City of London which has affectionately been given the nickname ‘The Cheesegrater’ due to its distinctive tapered profile. The building is designed to protect the views of St Paul’s Cathedral from Fleet Street.As well as offering retail and dining facilities with modern, flexible office space the building sits atop sixteen inclined columns and braces leaving a seven storey landscaped open space at the base of the building, covering nearly half an acre.

The Grid is a four-storey project in Leeds, it consists of 11 apartments housing 38 beds with a cycle store, gym and laundry facilities. Its modern approach to design fits the aesthetic choices of university students while landscaped grounds offer an area of calm with limited parking for each flat.The Grid makes perfect use of Carlton’s Wolds Minster Blend and its internal contemporary leanings. The dark orange, red, purple and brown bricks create a harmonious visual synergy with the ageing brickwork in the surrounding area.

Hoxton Rooftop Garden in Underwood Street is a relatively quiet location within the sought-after district of Hoxton in central London, where younger residents are drawn to its eclectic, bohemian vibe. Number 31 is a six-story building with an additional roof terrace, exclusively for the use of sixth-floor occupiers Duncan Coombe and Linda Robson.To create a personalised space of creative lounging and dining areas that incorporated elements of nature to contrast with and complement the built environment. The Client turned to landscape architect Ula Maria for inspiration.

Accoya was selected as the ideal material to clad the new Performing Arts Centre for Pipers Corner School, High Wycombe. Over 1200 m2 of Accoya cladding, soffits and trims were used throughout the project for phase 1 of the build. Designed by Nichols Brown Webber Architects and Landscape Planners, Accoya was chosen due to its Class 1 durability and low maintenance upkeep. Accoya was also used due to its sustainability credentials as the building has been targeted to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating.

Beaufort Park is one of North West London’s newest and most desirable residential developments. Alfresco Floors supplied Ebema concrete tiles for use across the tree-lined boulevards and landscaped parkland. The Alfresco Floors range from Ebema is a very design conscious collection and features three surfaces, Carreau, Rockstone and Megasmooth, with a large range of standard colours, and tile sizes all the way up to 1200mm long and 80mm deep. Bespoke colours and sizes can be supplied for orders of just 500 SqM or more.

Clean and contemporary lines, an atmosphere of mystery and drama and a natural, rural patchwork effect are the three dominant themes in Crown Paints’ latest, on-trend Colour Influences. Three palettes have been developed for the Autumn/Winter 2017 season, Considered, Intrigue and Patterned Landscape, with each collection designed to give architects and designers inspiration to create personality in their projects. The Colour Influences are produced by an expert panel, assembled by Crown, who join forces to pinpoint the latest trends, using their knowledge and passion for colour to produce a stunning visual compilation.

Artform were specified to supply outdoor bench seating and litter bins to match the rest of the multi-million pound scheme for a new Waitrose store. The products specified were the Multiplicity backless bench and the Multiplicity litter bin which are both part of the award winning Multiplicity collection of integrated site furniture. The end result for the project was a newly completed store that reflected the attention to detail in the landscaping and visually reinforces the brand promise that the Waitrose name represents in the retail food marketplace – namely one of high quality and good taste.

East India Dock is a refurbished site in East London, comprising of 6,000m2 of office workspace and a new area of public realm. The previously underutilised space has been fabulously transformed, including the creation of a pedestrian only external landscaped area. Artform Urban were commissioned to provide litter bins for the public realm and surrounding areas. The client needed the litter bins to be multifunctional for the project, allowing litter to be segregated into both general waste and recycling. The Spencer R Litter Bin was the optimal solution for the site, from design to budget.

London-based architect, WHAT_Architecture has specified CUPA PIZARRAS’ CUPACLAD 101 Logic as the ideal rainscreen cladding system for a new and unusual housing block in Peckham. Crucial to this decision was the system’s ease of installation and its natural aesthetic, which helped the contemporary design to also complement the surrounding and traditional urban landscape. We chose the CUPACLAD 101 Logic as its design layout also reflects that of the brick base, without actually using brick,” said Diana Kulacka, Project Architect from WHAT_Architecture.

This contemporary holiday home is located in the tranquil, unspoiled Swedish archipelago. Set into the cliff, the house is beautifully framed by the dramatic, rocky landscape and the deep blue sea. The wooden structure of the house was inspired by the local building traditions found in the boat houses of the archipelago. The interior reflects the minimalist exterior, with furniture in light wood and a subtle colour palette. This eye catching outdoor A5000 was installed with access the care homes patio area, ensuring safe and secure accessibility for residents and staff. The patio has outdoor seating where residents are regularly served afternoon tea, and meals when the weather is fine. The glazed shaft panels allow for great views of the landscaped grounds when travelling in the lift. The staff and residents enjoy many activities outdoors, including their annual summer fair and barbeques, so a lift was essential for ensuring that everyone has easy access to the patio and gardens.

UltraScape Pro-Bed HS, Pro-Prime and Flowpoint ECO are being used to help make Bradford’s City Park a world class public park. Bradford Council, in conjunction with landscape architect Gillespies and consulting engineer Arup, have specified UltraScape’s Pro-Bed HS Bedding Mortar, Pro-Prime Slurry Primer, EP-R9 Epoxy Bedding Mortar and Flowpoint ECO flowable grout – in Natural and Charcoal – for use by the main contractor Birse Civils, to lay the setts, porphyry and sandstone in and around the Mirror Pool.

Middlesbrough Council developed the idea for Middlesbrough Sports Village which included the construction of a 250m velodrome and a stadium to accommodate an eight lane track and field with seating for 650 people, as well as a five court racquet hall, gym, tennis courts and all-weather pitches. An attractive hard landscaping solution was needed to enhance the pedestrian areas at the new £23 million Sports Village and Tobermore helped the council achieve this with the provision of Mayfair Flags – a paving slab with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a striking, contemporary look.

TJX Europe’s landmark new headquarters in the centre of Watford demonstrates how Biotecture’s living walls can transform urban landscapes and create an architectural feature to stunning effect. Standing at 12 storeys high, it is one of the tallest buildings in Watford and features over 620 square metres of living wall, positioned internally and externally both at ground level and with multiple elevations, including a seventh-floor roof terrace. The living wall was installed nearly a year ahead of the the project handover and will contribute to the target BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.

Take a walk with us through Camberley, a traditional English town located in the county of Surrey, southeast England. Large-scale improvements to Camberley High Street, Princess Way, and Knoll Walk have brought a safer, modern, attractive space to the town centre. The redesign has created a pleasant environment that is pedestrian-and cyclist-friendly, whilst accommodating the needs of parking, servicing, and safer driving conditions for vehicles.„Camberley’s High Street transformation has set a new quality standard for the town’s public realm,“ comments Joao Toscano CMLI Director of Landscape & Urban Design at Project Centre. „Our design proposals were grounded in the latest best practice in streetscape design, and we used bespoke design to elevate a sense of place, identity and quality, whilst promoting pedestrian comfort and traffic calming principles,“ Stefano Scarano, Senior Landscape Architect adds.Taking into account the invisible importance of street furniture when balancing an urban landscape, the studio worked closely with an established international brand, mmcité. Together they furbished the streets of Camberley with refreshing and modern street furniture.The mmcité portfolio is based on products which are universal, fitting in almost anywhere. They are attentively designed down to the finest detail, and even when they’re not seeking attention they have a huge effect on people’s lives in the city. „This is proof of our aim to approach public spaces with respect to their context,“ said mmcité chief designer, David Karasek. „We are setting the bar for outdoor design as if it were conventional furniture. Furniture that must meet standards a thousand times more exacting than anything we have at home, thanks to the host of limitations on materials and technologies, as well as ensuring resistance against bad weather and vandalism,“ he concluded.The flexibility that the spatial design creates, the bespoke detailing of key design features (e. g. the seating planters across Princess Way and Knoll Walk, the green wall in Knoll Walk or the new High Street gate), the careful choice of paving materials and sensitive planting design – all of this illustrates a high level of placemaking ambition and innovation which prepares Camberley town centre for its future.

The Challenge Modern paving was required for the entrance plaza of a shopping destination High Street Mall has been transformed into Portadown’s leading retail and parking hub. The £6m regeneration project required a new shopping centre layout, enhanced parking, greater town centre access and a new pedestrianised central plaza with modern landscaping. Over 2000m2 of modern paving material was required for the entrance to the retail hub. Due to the expansive nature of the area, laying patterns would need to be used to ‘zone’ and break up areas into smaller pockets of space. The plaza needed to be designed in a way that people could use it as a place to gather and socialise. The client wanted the retail project to have a public realm feel to it that the community could enjoy. The Solution Tobermore’s Fusion block paving created a plaza with a striking, modern look.  Fusion block paving in Silver, Mid Grey, Sandstone and Noir was chosen for the 2000m2 plaza which created a striking, modern look. The entrance to the new 25,000ft2 Lidl store features a new pedestrianised square complete with seating and planters. Anchor tenants, Lidl, opted for 600m2 of Fusion paving to be laid outside their premises in keeping with the rest of the retail park. The client fully embraced the complimentary hard landscape proposal which was provided by Tobermore. Unique laying patterns were used to ‘zone’ and break up space in the expansively paved area. The paving design provided by Tobermore featured ‘pockets of space’ where coffee docks and pop-up markets could be situated. Fusion in Sandstone and a small proportion of Mid Grey was used to zone ‘public’ areas like the courtyard. The walkways feature Fusion in Silver and Mid Grey with a low percentage of Sandstone in the blend. These design choices were made to distinguish each area while still giving subtle reference to each other. Bands of Fusion in Noir were used as buffer strips to create a clear distinction of where people can walk into and out of the Lidl store.  The retail project certainly has a public realm feel to it as it is fully pedestrianised. The plaza was designed in a way that the local community could use it as a place to gather and socialise. There are seated areas with soft landscaping that creates a calming atmosphere for people to relax.

Brookfield is a recent acquisition that the University of Leicester is developing to offer supplementary and upgraded teaching facilities and office accommodation for support staff. When selecting seating for the scheme, landscape architects Barry Chinn Associates truly embraced the modular concept of RailRoad, so much so that the setting out of the perimeter planting beds was dictated by the seating sizes. Three separate seats were supplied, each comprising different radii modules that introduce a refreshing informality to the courtyard. The seating is further enhanced by the addition and informal placement of backrests, armrests and tablet surfaces.

Located in one of Aberdeen’s historic buildings at the heart of the city, Sandman Signature Aberdeen Hotel is Sandman Hotel Group’s first hotel in Scotland and provides bold, luxurious accommodations. The Hotel is situated in the former Robert Gordon University St Andrews Street campus and is a historic building which contributes to the architectural landscape of the city with 218 beautifully appointed guest rooms. The hotel required long lasting, beautiful to look at, anti-slip stair nosings that would stand the test of time… the contractors specified Genesis NHD08 with an Ice Grey insert – perfect choice!

Naylor Lintels were supplied to the winning project of the Supreme Award at the Brick Awards 2015 The Whitworth Art Gallery. The judges comments were - Extraordinary architectural quality both in its internal and external spatial arrangements, attention to detail and workmanship. The proportions of the external spaces are immensely effective and give a calmness and richness. The relationship to its surroundings is clear in the historic Whitworth building and its landscape setting, park and new courtyards. This building has tremendous architectural quality and its use of brick as an ornamental narrative device as well as a robust skin is exceptional.

The Courtyards is an extra care housing scheme in Preston designed by Levitt Bernstein Architects, for Community Gateway Association, a community-led organisation that empowers residents and local people to shape its services and improve their homes. 60 apartments, split into 40 two-bed and 20 one-bed homes, are arranged around two landscaped courtyards and set within existing mature trees, affording all residents a strong connection to nature. A striking black barn sits between the courtyards and features PREFA Rhomboids in P.10 Black colour.

Island Rest, in the Isle of Wight, is designed to be a contemporary family escape offering unique views across the Solent – a 20-mile stretch of water, while equipping occupants with everyday functionality. There are many layers to Island Rest which enable the building to blend into and celebrate its beautiful environment. Glazing is a key part of this - Hi-Finity is utilised to create a variety of features, from full-height windows which frame the spectacular views, through to large sliding doors which open up living spaces onto a courtyard and landscaped gardens.

2-6 Cannon Street is a high-end new build commercial office building located in the City of London. Alfresco Floors were commissioned by Frost Landscape Construction to supply and install the GRAD decking and rail systems, which were supported by the Buzon pedestal system. This was a particularly challenging project as steel planters were strategically located in the middle of the roof terrace so installation had to be carried out around the numerous planters. The finished outdoor space at 2-6 Cannon Street provides office workers with a unique roof top terrace.

Middlewood locks is located in the city of Salford and at the gateway to Manchester City Centre. Artform Urban supplied a range of street furniture to a new £1bn waterside mixed-use development project. Box litter bins featuring unique laser cut patterns are distributed across the Canalside landscape. Giada, a robust and hard wearing granite and timber bench was selected to line the edges of the canalise path. Two versions of the stylish Inside cycle stand were also supplied. Middlewood locks received an award in 2019 for Insider North West's Large Apartment Development of the Year.
