Timber Window Project: Restoring Charm to a Matlock CottageDiscover how Gowercroft successfully transformed Robert Jones's quaint stone cottage in Matlock with high-quality timber windows and doors.A Challenging Derbyshire CottageWhen Robert Jones approached Gowercroft for his cottage renovation in Matlock, they faced an intriguing challenge. His 200-square-meter, 5-bedroom cottage nestled into a Derbyshire hillside, offering stunning countryside views. The property had three stories at the front but only one at the rear, with the ground floor patio situated atop an integral garage.Robert aimed to breathe new life into the neglected property by undertaking a comprehensive refit, including new electrics, bathrooms, stairs, carpets, roofing, garage, and replacement doors and windows. He sought a renovation that honoured the local aesthetics, using durable traditional materials like English slate for the roof and energy-efficient timber windows and patio doors to maximise the scenic vistas.Meeting the ChallengeAccess to the property posed a considerable challenge due to its location on a sharp bend with a steep incline at the end of a winding country road. The installation of oversized windows and doors seemed daunting, but Gowercroft embraced the challenges with creative solutions.Gowercroft crafted and installed eleven Hardwick flush casement windows, a Peveril lift and slide patio door, two floor-to-ceiling fixed light windows, an Accoya® front door, and a timber Melbourne stable door at the side. The lift and slide patio doors and glazed screens had to feature 6mm-thick glass to ensure structural integrity, making each unit weigh approximately 200 kilograms.Given the size and weight of the units, manual handling was impractical. Gowercroft enlisted a specialist contractor with a telehandler to navigate the steep drive and hoist the units into place. Additional personnel joined the effort."The job demanded teamwork, meticulous planning, and coordination with the ongoing building work as we removed the old windows and adjusted the existing openings," Robert explained.Exceeding ExpectationsThroughout the installation, unforeseen challenges arose, including the need to cut away patio paving slabs blocking the original patio doors and repositioning the door frame to accommodate the new Accoya® front door. A new state-of-the-art Jaguar Landrover showroom was built for the Helston Group in Taunton. The facilities reflect the latest corporate identity concept and comes complete with a new workshop, multi-storey rooftop parking, and an interactive showroom configuration with display systems.The showroom features wide open spaces and a large sales area to provide the customer with a first-class experience. It also affords staff members greater visibility throughout the showroom and forecourt areas. Lusso were appointed by main contractor, Acheson Construction, to provide internal glazing throughout the showroom and workshop area. Lusso 25 frameless single glazed partitioning system and complimentary Lusso glass doors were installed to form individual offices which allow privacy when needed, whilst still maintaining visibility of the showroom. Lusso 105 double glazed frameless partitions were installed to provide a barrier between the showroom and workshop area.The use of stylish internal glazing as part of the backdrop to the stunning Jaguar Landrover range certainly makes an impact. False fire alarms have risen by nearly 16% in just 6 years at NHS trusts across England; stretching resources, unsettling patients, and disrupting vital healthcare.Figures from NHS Digital reveal there were 19,566 false fire alarms at NHS trusts throughout 2020/21, with some trusts recording upwards of 500 false alarms.The worrying results reveal that both in the past year and historically, several patients have sustained ‘injuries during evacuation’, highlighting the damaging effects of an unnecessary evacuation.With appointments cancelled, operations delayed, and a fall in emergency department attendances during the period, we might have expected to see the number of false fire alarms fall significantly during the pandemic.At a time where it is vital to avoid the crowded corridors and large gatherings at assembly points that follow an evacuation, it has become even more pertinent to eradicate the causes of false alarms ensuring a socially distanced environment for vulnerable patients.Of the 19,566 false alarms 5,742 resulted in a callout, firefighters respond to all alarms as if they are real. This exposes the public and fire crews to unnecessary risk in their emergency response to unwanted fire signals, directing them away from real emergencies – threatening to place added pressure on the NHS.Across the 216 NHS trusts listed within the data, a total of 1,175 genuine fires were recorded.False alarms cost businesses and Fire and Rescue Service authorities an estimated £1 billion a year in the UK. In order to recoup this cost, the London Fire Brigade became the first fire service in the country to recover costs from hospitals with a poor false alarm record.A false alarm is a fire alarm signal caused by means other than a genuine fire, which has activated a fire detection and alarm system, these can include: equipment false alarm, environmental influences, accidental damage, and inappropriate human action, including the malicious activation of a manual call point.As recommended in BS 5839-1:2017 manual call points can be fitted with a protective cover to prevent false fire alarms. The British Standard Institute recommends in section 20.2b that: “All MCPs should be fitted with a protective cover, which is moved to gain access to the frangible element.“It is now recommended that a protective cover is fitted to a Type A manual call point to help prevent false alarms.”This is supported by fire safety guidance set out by the Department of Health which outlines the importance of “initiating measures to reduce false alarms and unwanted fire signals,” such as “the provision of lift flaps, or lift flaps combined with a local alarm device [which] are sufficient to control the possibility of undesirable actuation by patients.”Safety Technology International manufacture a range of protective covers, from integral covers to outdoor and sounder models; there are variations to suit all applications. These covers are specifically designed to prevent false alarms whether accidental or malicious.The Call Point Stopper is a protective cover ideal for areas with a risk of accidental activation, such as hospitals and healthcare facilities. The polycarbonate cover does not restrict the legitimate operation of vulnerable call points and helps distinguish a fire call point from a green electronic door release – often located nearby, this is a common cause of false alarms.Fire crews recently attended a false fire alarm at the Royal Blackburn Hospital after a discharged patient broke five break glass call points. If there is a history of malicious activations whereby patients or visitors intentionally activate the fire alarms, causing unwanted evacuations and disrupting important healthcare, the Euro Stopper offers a solution.The Euro Stopper provides a tamper-proof cover featuring the same sturdy UV-stabilised polycarbonate housing as the Call Point Stopper with the useful addition of an optional integral sounder and glow-in-the-dark frame. Nissan Sunderland is one of the largest, most efficient car plants in Europe. On average, the plant has built a Nissan car every two minutes since production started.Project/doors:10 Speedor Cleanrooms (Over 200 doors supplied to the plant)The challengeFollowing the manufacture of a new paint plant where Hart have a number of doors including several ATEX, Nissan identified a requirement for new repair lines to enable them to carry out both light and heavy repairs and not have to completely repaint the vehicles. This is fast moving environment with the need for a reliable and dust reducing solution.The solutionUsing a tried and tested solution, Hart installed these “hybrid” Speedor Cleanrooms with ATEX operators within the repair zone. We worked closely with site engineers to give them the solution they require, rather than a door to fit an opening. The Speedor Cleanroom maintains strict air leakage requirements over specified pressure differentials and a non-touch safety light curtain which ensures maximum protection to personnel. The successHart is a trusted supplier to Nissan and its subcontractors. Having worked on the site since it’s inception, Nissan approached Hart to supply the doors. Edgingtons Architects were appointed by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to design and deliver a new build sixth form building for Windsor Girls School. The external detailing of the brickwork takes inspiration from a mature oak tree that sits in close proximity to the building, ground floor representing the tree trunk and first floor the texture of the branches and leaves. Internally the building follows a simple layout with a neutral palette of cream, grey and light wood finishes.The ironmongery brief was to specify a simple, robust and affordable ironmongery scheme that would stand up to the typical heavy use of an education setting while ensuring the products were chosen to ensure a long life span. The scheme centres around our Vieler 522 safety lever handle and matching straight pull handle finished in stainless steel. We also supplied all door signage including stainless steel and black door discs denoting room numbers. We’re always so pleased when we hear from customers who have opted to use our products for their projects.When we received an email and some impressive before and after photos, from one such customer who had used Polytrol colour restorer to revive his garage door, we’re not exaggerating when we say that there was an audible buzz of appreciation in the Owatrol office as we took in the transformation.It was then that we knew that we had to share how Brian (our happy customer) had achieved this result, so that our other customers could benefit, too.First, clean your garage doorIf you want to replicate Brian’s success, it’s important to ensure that your garage door is prepped before application. Your door must be clean and free of any dirt, grease, mildew or grime.A bit of elbow grease and a bowl of soapy water is usually all you’ll need to do the job. However, if there’s any mildew on your garage door, scrub on a 50:50 bleach and water solution, leave it for 10 minutes, then rinse it off.If you have any polishes or waxes on your garage door, you will need to remove these too.Before moving on to the next step, ensure that your garage door is completely dry.Now it’s time to apply PolytrolA deep penetrating oil, Polytrol works by penetrating the surface of your door and re-wetting the pigments. This restores the colour that has been lost over the years, through exposure to pollution, rain and sunlight.Using a brush or a cloth and only working in sections that you can complete in 10-20 minutes, apply a liberal layer of Polytrol.As you work, if you notice any particularly matt and shiny patches, it means that the surface is absorbing Polytrol unevenly. If this happens, just move any surplus oil over to the matt areas.Allow the product to work for 10-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean, lint-free cloth. If you want a shinier finish, you can also buff the surface with a lint-free cloth.It really is as simple as that…Now, you just need to leave Polytrol to dry.One of the great things about Polytrol, is that it has been designed to dry to a tough and long-lasting flexible finish but with no film, so you won’t need to worry about it peeling or flaking.Plus, Polytrol is now also available in a spray can, to make application super simple.“Couldn’t have wished for a better result”Brian informed us that he:“just chanced upon your advert while browsing the net looking for a product that would improve the look of my door, and I am so very glad that I did…”In his email, Brian also said he “couldn’t have wished for a better result”. We have to agree – his garage door has been totally transformed.

When the Vivienne Westwood group wanted to project their brand image on to their outlet entrances, they contacted ASH directly to design a door handle.Using the well-known iconic orb logo as a starting point we created a unique polished brass profile with engraved features which reflects their brand and also feels comfortable to touch and operate.We are proud to have provided such a bespoke handle to the location in Nottingham, the same city where the handle was manufactured, and even prouder to see the handle still on the doors 15 years later, providing a testament to the quality and durability of our products and craftsmenship. 

As part of the extension to the Tate Modern there was a requirement for doorsets with unusual characteristics. The RC4 security rated doors were quite large at 3m x 3m which, combined with the need to clad the doors in the same material as the building, created potential certification issues.Teckentrup was part of the team for the project and worked with the test houses through the design process to achieve a solution for the building.

Rutherford House is an imposing 58,000 sq ft office building located within the heart of Birchwood Park, Warrington, providing superior office space to rent for small, medium and large businesses employing up to 100 people. Consisting of two wings of three and five floors, the building has excellent natural lighting and is conveniently located for travel across the region. Recently refurbished to a high standard, the office complex now boasts a full-height glass atrium and spacious reception area. To achieve this record was chosen to remove the existing bi-parting sliding doors and replace them with a K32 Full Glass Revolving Door, pass door with a DFA 127 Swing Operator, full screen and linear framework.The K32 Full Glass Revolving Door, with the drive motor under the floor, provides a striking and welcoming entrance that complements the surrounding glass facade and allows natural light to flood into the building. With large, spacious compartments, the K31 can accommodate the constant flow of building occupants, ensuring they can safely and comfortably enter and exit the building at all times, whilst maintaining an airlock into the reception to create an ambient temperature and help reduce heating costs.To complement the record K32, a pass door with a record DFA 127 Swing Operator, which is silent in operation, has been installed to enable a wider opening, for wheelchair users and deliveries of large bulky items as and when required.

The project undertaken by EJM refrigeration, involved improving its energy efficiency and carbon footprint with the installation of a new CO2 refrigeration system.The two Eiger Doors will enhance operational efficiency in the high-demand environment and will maintain consistent freezer temperatures, while ensuring unimpeded access to cold stores.Since its launch in 2002, the Eiger Door has been installed as a fast-access traffic door at major food retailers, 3PL cold storage and distribution, and frozen food manufacturers across the UK.The Eiger Door ensures that consistent temperatures can be maintained and features an innovative dehumidification system, which prevents snow and ice build-up on the door blade and frame. This feature tackles a consistent issue plaguing other door types, as the freezer encounters humid ambient air entering the cold store.Minimising downtime is also supported by the Eiger Door’s robust construction and its tried and tested crash-out and reset system. Clement was thrilled to be asked to manufacture the new steel windows and doors for this spectacular Arts and Crafts style house in the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The new leaded Brooking windows and W20 steel doors, look just like the originals – perhaps even better! Hampstead handles were chosen for the windows and Kensington handles for the doors. They were all polyester powder painted in RAL 9005 Jet Black to match the frames. Our client is really pleased with the end result and said:“We placed a large order with Clement of double glazed leaded doors and windows. Introduction:The Wild Place Project, a part of the esteemed Bristol Zoo Network, embarked on an expansion journey a couple of years ago, aimed at enriching visitor experiences while ensuring the welfare of their animal inhabitants. Project:Surespan were approached to develop and supply a series of 4 hour fire rated flush floor access covers for the Midfield Concourse expansion project at Hong Kong International Airport. The HK$10 Billion dollar project was completed in 2015 following extensive design and planning processes utilising BIM modelling. Product:Our SAC covers were specified for their fire rating and ease of customisation. The covers were specially adapted with a 200mm upstand and enhanced fire-rated materials to achieve the 4-hour rating. Just 100 metres away from the Royal Courts of Justice in London stands 188 Fleet Street, which until recently was the home of bankers Coutts & Co. The 35,000 sq ft building, purchased for £11 million, has been recently refurbished by HD Architects to house a publishing company. The renovated office benefits from a number of striking internal steel screens which feature throughout the office and contribute to the amount of natural daylight that filters through the space.

After carrying out a fire door survey, Warwick Hospital undertook measures to protect and refurbish the fire doors throughout their sterilisation unit with Yeoman Shield door protection products.Catering for the sterilisation requirements for all wards and departments within South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust as well as GP surgeries and clinics, the department is a hub of activity. The movement of heavily laden trolleys and equipment around the unit had caused impact damage to the department’s doors around door edges, glazing beads and the door fronts. Damage to these particular parts of a fire door can render it unfit for purpose.In this instance Yeoman Shield fired rated door protection products were used to refurbish and then protect from further impact damage. Door edge protectors were fitted to the leading and meeting edges of the doors with door protection panels installed to a height that would shield the most vulnerable areas.For additional protection, particularly to ward off blows to the glazing bead section of the doors, Yeoman Shield’s rub rail was fitted to the face of the door just below the vision panels. Colours of Blue and Red were chosen to distinguish between the contaminated and sterile areas within the unit.Yeoman Shield door protection products come with current and relevant fire certificates and do not affect the integrity of a fire door when installed but will continue to protect from detrimental impact damage for many years to come.Malcolm Bloxham Reactive Supervisor commented “We have used Yeoman Shield for many years and find their door protection products perfect for maintaining our fire doors in good working condition, helping to reduce our door maintenance costs by minimising repair and replacement requirements.”

Typical of most of the houses in the Hampstead Garden Suburb, the style of this beautiful home is influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement.The original steel windows and doors were draughty and no longer fit for purpose and so they needed replacing. The Clement range of Brooking windows, which feature a specialist ‘putty fronted’ system, was chosen together with doors from the Clement W20 range, to match the originals perfectly. The new, bespoke steel doors and windows were painted ‘Jet Black’ on the outside to replicate the previous fenestration and ‘Traffic White’ on the inside to complement the interior. The homeowner said:“I am absolutely delighted with Clement and would recommend them very highly. Their workmen were very professional and swift and they left the house tidy each day. They were a pleasure to have in the house whilst they were doing the work.”

CASE: Motorised and concealed roller blinds and awnings across sliding doors

Sliding pocket doors are hugely beneficial when designing new or refurbished accommodation for people with disabilities where inclusive design is deemed important. More than 30 sliding pocket door systems and 11 Eclisse Hoist pocket door systems have been installed inside the new building. The Eclisse Hoist pocket door system has meant that a hoist lift can be between rooms to transport the young people from one area to another. Three ECLISSE Hoist pocket door systems have been installed in the physiotherapy area and a motorised lifting system in the pool area.

Underneath the curved, zinc roof, the 3 homes have been designed to maximize light and space. Designed to bring serenity in the bustle of the city, each floor connects to the outside with large windows and terraces. Percy Lane features Reynaers CF 77 and CP 155(-LS) sliding and folding door systems, and CS 77 aluminium window systems.

Speedwell Baths were originally opened in 1937, and quickly became a beloved recreational spot for hundreds of Bristol City dwellers for more than 7 decades. Unfortunately, in 2005, Bristol City Council made the decision for the Baths to close. Subsequently, the site remained abandoned for several years until their demolition in 2019.This paved the way for a new five-storey complex comprising 31 affordable homes, featuring a mixture of 1 & 2 bedroom apartments.This signifies the successful conclusion of a vital revitalization initiative for the local community, bringing much-needed affordable housing to Bristol. PARTNERSHIPThe architectural design for this development was entrusted to Angus Meek Architects, a Bristol based firm, who worked alongside Bristol City Council & property developer, Crossman Homes, to bring the project to fruition.HAG Ltd was successfully awarded the contract & crucial responsibility of delivering security and fire protection door solutions throughout the five-story building, leveraging our expertise and track record. THE PROJECTWork on site began in 2019, starting with the dramatic demolition of the historic swimming pool and the building was eventually completed & handed over to Abri Housing Association in January 2022.The front of the building is designed as an "art moderne" style but incorporating elements of art deco detailing from the original Baths, demonstrating that the development has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the area, reflecting the style & shape of the existing building in a contemporary way.HAG Ltd. were delighted to have been chosen to work on such ground-breaking local development and were keen to assist in the design & installation of high-end security & fire protection products that could aesthetically compliment the design & style of the building.Steel doorsets are versatile, can provide high levels of security, as well as fire protection tested to BS EN 1634, and offer excellent value for money. Bespoke options that were utilised on his project, were louvered doors, communal doors & insurance certified doors, which conform to LPS1175.Louvered doors allow for bi-directional airflow, a medium level of security and can be fully customisable to meet your specification. This was key in this project, to allow ventilation to various secure plant rooms across the site and offer a bespoke colour option, so doors can blend seamlessly into their surroundings.In a busy City complex of 31 apartments, secure yet robust communal entrance doors are a necessity to allow for a high level of pedestrian traffic throughout the day. Double glazing panels allow for through vision and locking systems can be adapted to include access control.Our Fireguard Fire Resisting steel doors gave Speedwell Baths fire protection & high levels of security. Fire protection can be guarantee from 60 to 240 minutes and these doors are certified to BS EN 16034. HAG Ltd. hold the CERTIFIRE certification as well as being FIRAS installation certified – one of only a few installers in the UK to hold such a highly sought after accolade. Sean Gill, management company manager at Abri, one of the largest housing providers in the south, said: “Our new development on the Speedwell Swimming Baths sites will provide further much-needed affordable housing in the city."

Our team at Helmsman manufactured and installed 30 two-compartment solid-grade laminate lockers at Doug Philips Ltd. The specification of the lockers was 1800mm high, 300mm wide, and 450mm deep. The clients requested for the two-compartment lockers to be manufactured with an internal shelf and angled shoe tray within the lockers. Additionally, all the lockers had a perforated base which allows airflow into and out of the lockers.The body of the lockers was powder coated in ‘Black’ which is from our standard colours, whereas the laminate doors are in colour ‘Artic White’ by BioCarbon Laminate, which is a beautiful colour providing an aesthetic and organised area. The laminate lockers were completed with vinyl numbering as well as Lowe & Fletchers Nimbus combination lock in Black.

The real eye-catcher of the main entrance is the double-leaf automatic sliding door, with a powerful GEZE Slimdrive SL drive system that works almost invisibly thanks to its construction height of only 70 mm. The Slimdrive SL drive automatic drive fits unobtrusively and elegantly into the contemporary clinic façade, and quietly and efficiently manages thousands of movement cycles every day at the busy children’s hospital."We are delighted by the design of our entrance area. The high-quality workmanship makes a key contribution to a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for patients and clinical staff," says Vickie Holcroft, Project Manager at the John Radcliffe Hospital.Automatic swing doors: convenience in the entire clinical areaThe swing door systems from the GEZE TSA drive series are used everywhere in the clinic complex where functionality and ease of access are of particular importance. The automatic TSA 160 door drive ensures light and reliable opening and closing of the automatic doors, even in heavily frequented areas. The TS 4000 overhead door closer provides flexible ease of access at swing doors with manual opening. The closing force of the door closers can be individually set and can be perfectly adjusted to meet the needs of each clinical area. They enable door leaves to be opened with minimal effort, e.g. for children and weak adults. The TSA drives make transportation of beds and/or patients easier for clinical staff.Access control for supervised clinical areasTo safeguard access control to sensitive clinical areas, the swing doors to the operating rooms and intensive card wards were also equipped with a TSA drive with an electromagnetic locking system. This guarantees that only authorised persons can enter these areas.

Furnitubes provisioned a number of AKRI raised planter beds for the scheme, the flexibility of the product permitted the creation of a unique stepped solution that was required at specific intervals in the planter to allow for the various changes in levels. A total of 26 meters of AKRI retaining walls were provided in heights of 670mm to accommodate the stepped solution, each planter comprising two internal soil retaining supports to provide increased strength to retain the contents. A return fold with additional anti-skates outlined the rim of the planters to maximise strength and not form a potential harmful edge.

The Junipers is the first of its kind in the south west of England; offering inpatient support that's closer to home for people with complex mental health needs. The design of the purpose-built unit included input from experts by lived experience and is truly a facility designed with people in mind. When we first discussed the plans for The Junipers PICU with Devon Partnership, we knew it was an opportunity to work together to create a new state-of-the-art ward. After reviewing their options, Devon Partnership chose to install our full doorset range. We worked closely with them before, during and after installation to ensure all of the doors and locksets were operating to help both patients and staff.
