Discover the remarkable transformation of Draycott's Canal Side Cottages, a project that has breathed new life into six derelict 200-year-old cottages in Derbyshire. In 2017, the Derbyshire and Sandiacre Canal Trust stepped in to rescue the cottages as part of their ambitious plan to restore the disused canal and the surrounding area.With the vision of turning these cottages into a vibrant mixed-use complex, the Trust launched a £650k appeal. The goal was to create three 2-3 bedroom dwellings, a canal side café, commercial spaces for leisure companies, and a museum showcasing the canal's history and the lives of mill workers.ADDC Architects, renowned conservation experts, were entrusted with the task of designing the conversion. They skillfully worked around the intricate history of the original brick buildings, which had gone through multiple alterations and rebuilds in the 19th century. The architects aimed to preserve the unique character of the cottages while ensuring a functional layout suitable for their new purpose.The restoration process involved an incredible community effort, with local tradesmen, contractors, and volunteers coming together to bring the cottages back to life. The extensive work included clearing vegetation and debris, erecting scaffolding, reinforcing timbers, and salvaging original bricks and slates for rebuilding.One crucial aspect of the restoration was the installation of new timber windows. Gowercroft Joinery, a reputable local manufacturer with expertise in heritage and restoration projects, supplied the traditional Chatsworth sliding sash windows for the canal-facing elevations. These windows perfectly matched the original designs, featuring slim finger-jointed frames and Georgian styled glazing bars. At the rear, Hardwick casement windows were installed to maintain a utilitarian look consistent with the building's history.Crafted from solid Red Grandis hardwood, the windows offered both elegance and energy efficiency. The bespoke curved top casements faithfully reinstated, and Melbourne hardwood doors further enhanced the joinery and timber craftsmanship throughout the cottages.The restored Canal Cottages now stand as a symbol of the Trust's broader vision to revive the 13-mile canal and its surrounding areas. Once completed, the canal restoration will create a 25-mile cruising ring, connecting to thousands of miles of navigable waterways across the UK. It will provide opportunities for outdoor activities, such as angling, canoeing, and cycling while promoting wildlife conservation and improving the well-being of local residents.By being a part of this project, Gowercroft Joinery has not only contributed to the architectural heritage but also supported the revival of the Derby Canal, acting as a catalyst for regeneration in the city centre. Whiskey connoisseurs can now enjoy a favourite tipple at the new Ad Gefrin whisky distillery and visitor centre in Wooler, which has been completed externally with a Sto render system. Ad Gefrin opened its doors to visitors in March 2023 to showcase the unique heritage, ancient hospitality, and contemporary crafts, arts and produce of Northumberland and re-awaken the Northumbrian tradition for Whisky distilling that has slept for over 200 years. The StoRend Flex Cote render system was specified for use on the facades of the new buildings by Elphick Associates, to provide maximum crack resistance, weatherproofing and fade resistance. Using the highest quality materials, StoArmat Classic Plus is a cement-free, acrylic resin-based reinforcing coat, and up to 15 times more flexible than traditional cement-based reinforcing coats, providing exceptional levels of crack resistance with the embedded Sto Glass Fibre strengthening mesh. The system, installed by Edendene Construction Services Ltd, was finished with an attractive, low-maintenance, white StoSilco render, which will keep its good looks for years to come.  StoDécor Flex, a mesh-reinforced system comprising of StoDecosit interior plaster onto StoVentec carrier board was also applied to some internal areas of the building to match the smooth, white exterior of the buildings. StoDecosit combines the best properties ofemulsion-based plasters and silicate plasters in a single product and is suitable for decorating walls to protect against mould and mildew, and for walls in heavy-use areas.Ad Gefrin is a family run business and this outstanding visitor experience includes a distillery, museum, bistro, and shop, and is also helping to deliver economic growth to the local and wider communities of Glendale. PROJECT OVERVIEWAs part of an extensive refurbishment scheme to modernise and transform Glasgow Royal Infirmary University Tower, Norwood were specified by architects Armitage Associates in partnership with main contractors Balfour Beatty Scottish and Southern Ltd. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde commissioned the £12.5 million project to significantly improve efficiency within the University Tower. SCOPE OF WORK The transformation included creation of the new state-of-the-art laboratory, as well as a plant room and an impressive glazed vertical ‘eyebrow’, which was installed on the north elevation to enable hospital staff spectacular views of the city within dedicated break-out zones. We were involved from an early stage in the design process and successfully developed a unique internal wall lining system which allowed the interior of the building to be upgraded whilst reflecting the features of the building exterior. From the outset Norwood understood the Royal Infirmary’s need to work within exceptional project and budget control whilst utilising a new bespoke system for the client. The system’s intelligent functionality was developed and manufactured specifically for the University Tower and as such perfectly demonstrates the capabilities and adaptability of our partitions. We also provided our steel door sets.

Providers of world class investment solutions, Fidelity International recently moved to newly refurbished London offices. Style was contracted to deliver flexible space to the meeting areas, installing four fully automatic Skyfold moveable walls finished in a stunning Kvadrat Floyd fabric. Housed discreetly in the ceiling cavity, Skyfold units take up zero floor space when not required, descending gracefully at the touch of the button to quickly sub-divide an area. With impressive 59dB Rw acoustic integrity, events can run concurrently, entirely undisturbed on either side of the wall. Fidelity has installed nearly 50 Skyfold walls in offices across the globe.

Matching their generosity Safety Technology International have partnered with a community charity to preserve and protect a life-saving donation for when it is needed most.The Post Office Anglers Society (POAS) is a family fishing club with a long history stretching back to the early 1970s; initially the brainchild of now honorary member David Butt and a fellow group of Post Office Telephone Engineers the Society now has nearly 300 members.In 2005, the Southend-on-Sea based Society purchased a 4.5 acre site in Sutton, Essex to develop their very own two lake fishery, Beauchamps, to supplement their existing leased fishery. The POAS’ Beauchamps Fishery was recently fortunate enough to receive an automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) donated by the Finish Line Fund.The AED was to be installed in the fisheries meeting area, a location partially open to the elements and only accessible to members. It was vital, therefore, the new life safety device be properly protected for use in an emergency.As is customary, the AED operator’s manual offered clear instructions for proper installation and maintenance, including guidance on impact protection, equipment visibility and environmental protection requirements.Drawing on the life safety expertise of its membership, STI’s AED Protective Cabinet (STI-7531AED) was identified by the POAS and carefully chosen to protect the sophisticated medical device as it exceeded all of the criteria set out by the manufacturer and all with a three-year guarantee.POAS Member and Fire Safety Professional, Ken Pearce, said: “The POAS contacted STI to discuss the enclosure and its importance in protecting the possibly life-saving AED.“We were delighted to hear that STI offered to donate the enclosure to the club to safeguard the AED from the elements and allow us to be able to carry out the installation in line with the AED manufacturer’s guidance.”It was determined the impact-resistant UV-stabilised polycarbonate enclosure could withstand any amount of accidental knocks from fishing equipment and fishery maintenance tools; the clear polycarbonate housing and thumb lock allowing the portable AED to remain both highly visible and easily accessible, vitally important in an emergency.From the scorching days of the POAS Summer League matches to the chilly Winter League matches fished by the hardiest of fishermen, the typical working properties of -40°C to 121°C greatly exceed the wildest of temperatures expected at the fishery throughout the year – An internal gasket guards against ingress.Ken added: “The AED Protective Cabinet was installed by a member of the POAS Maintenance Team who found the installation to be extremely straightforward, and was particularly pleased with the supplied wire shelf and steel mounting backplate, which ensured a secure installation – The enclosure was successfully installed in under an hour.“All members would like to thank STI for this great donation and we can have confidence that the equipment, should it be needed, will be easily accessible and well protected.”

In other areas where there is a slightly greater risk of fire, such as the kitchen area, internal doors and function room screens, were fitted with 21 mm Pilkington Pyrostop®, which provides 60 minutes fire integrity and insulation.Specialist glass & glazing contractors, Greaney Glass, were responsible for installing the fire-resistant glass and Ivan Greaney, Managing Director, comments: “For such a prestigious project it was imperative we used a fire-resistant glass we could trust. There could be hundreds of people within the hotel at any one time so we needed to use materials that would provide maximum protection under the most extreme circumstances. A record number of manual call points were maliciously activated across England for the year ending March 2022.The highest annual number of malicious false fire alarms on record came as people returned to public buildings en masse in a period markedly unaffected by COVID-19 lockdowns.The latest Home Office figures reveal there was a total of 3,212 false fire alarms caused by the “malicious activation of [a] fire call point/alarm” in England for the year ending March 2022, surpassing challenged hoax calls as the largest reason for malicious fire alarms.Accidental activations also increased over the period; 14,452 false fire alarms were recorded due to the accidental and careless activation of life safety equipment, including manual call points.Every false alarm is costly, disrupting schools and businesses, placing unnecessary strain on our emergency services and reducing public confidence in fire alarms.Despite online learning, working from home and limits on social contact, false fire alarm numbers, although down, persisted during the pandemic.As schools, offices and shops saw reduced attendance and footfall, malicious false fire alarms survived; now in a post-COVID world, there has been a boom in the number of false alarms plaguing the country.Continuing to be the largest incident type, false fire alarms accounted for 40 per cent of the incidents attended by Fire and Rescue Services in England for the period – fires accounted for just 26 per cent.Repeated false alarms reduce the public’s confidence in fire alarms, contributing to alarm fatigue and a complacent attitude toward evacuations. And with similar figures reflected across the UK, over £1 billion is lost every year due to false alarms.To recoup this cost the London Fire Brigade became the first fire service in the country to recover costs from buildings like hospitals, airports and student halls with a poor false alarm record.Firefighters respond to fire signals as if they are real, this exposes the public and fire crew to unnecessary risk in their swift response to false alarms, directing them away from real emergencies.Under The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order Act 2005, it is the responsibility of the building owner or the “responsible person” to ensure effective fire precautions are in place to protect staff, customers or visitors.Several precautionary steps can be implemented to prevent false fire alarms before they occur; routine testing and maintenance of call points is a must to ensure proper operation, but it is not the only proactive approach.As recommended in BS 5839-1:2017, manual call points can be fitted with a protective cover to prevent false fire alarms. The British Standard Institute recommends in section 20.2b), that: “All MCPs should be fitted with a protective cover, which is moved to gain access to the frangible element.“It is now recommended that a protective cover is fitted to a Type A manual call point to help prevent false alarms.”

The Strand Aldwych is a busy public area well-known as a procession route between Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral. The area was historically plagued by traffic and pollution, so people were reluctant to dwell for long periods of time.The newly pedestrianised area with stone walls already in place needed public seating outside St Clement Danes Church. Coordinating the wall shape with the stone underneath was imperative, and access was needed to the lighting drivers through the platforms since the stone underneath is illuminated with LEDs. With this in mind, our design team worked collaboratively to develop a bespoke version of our modular RailRoad seating design, based on the principles where interchangeable parts can be easily removed or replaced. A RailRoad wall-top solution was created with a custom curve to match the stone walls, and the platforms have removable hatches for access when needed.The bespoke RailRoad seating solution is manufactured from our triple processed (recycled) steel and powder coated in a distinct metallic copper finish - while the iroko timbers were coated with UV protective finish in teak to maintain their natural look. This project focused on improving air quality, and our AKRI retaining planters were ideal for bringing green into the space. Their flexibility also allowed for matching the geometry of the adjacent stone benches and roads. In order to prevent damage, welded anti skates were incorporated into the solution.The project not only provides health and well-being benefits with the new public landscaped areas, it will preserve the historic character and for the first time allow people to appreciate the nearby listed buildings. The new inclusive seating spaces for people to mix in are seen to be well used as people can enjoy their lunch, meet with friends and colleagues and simply enjoy a sense of community.

Eurosafe Solutions completed a major project to deliver and install a suspended cradle access system for the new Formula One Grand Prix stadium, which is built in India.

Furnitubes designed, engineered, manufactured and installed 35 planters and 8 seating units. The planters were supplied in corten steel and aluminium trusses up to 6m high were bolted into the base of the planters for climbing plants to grow up. The seating is from Furnitubes’ new Elements XL range, designed to be sufficiently stable to not require fixing down, with 4 units including bespoke backrests. All products are heavy enough to not be easily moved by the public, but can be readily moved by pallet truck if the spaces in the Lower Mall need to be rearranged in future.

The £83m development at ICCW, Celtic Manor Resort, South Wales, a joint venture between the Welsh Government and the Celtic Manor Resort, will provide 26,000sqm of total floor space for meetings, conferences and exhibitions. The Genesis NSL01 with Ice Grey inserts have been used in conjunction with the blue safety flooring. NHD05 with Ice Grey inserts have been used throughout all main and side stairwells along with NSA stair edges to complete the look. The NLT aluminium tile-in step edge profiles have been used throughout the building to add protection to step edges and provide a classic look.

Tottenham Hale station is an iconic gateway to surrounding areas and will be a focal point of this newly renovated district centre.

After decades of fundraising, Spitalfields Christ Church was restored to its pre-1850 condition, working from the original building documents where possible, a process that stretched over more than 25 years.

Network Rail’s nationwide initiative for high specification, durable AFA platform access bridges required AATi to supply re-engineered ‘Coverall’ combined stair nosing and step covers. These small design changes have again improved bridge construction techniques and the long-term performance of the stairway, and removed dirt-traps and improved drainage. AATi supplied their SN293 WL307 UR to fit the needs.

Canada Water is located in Rotherhithe and is the busiest two-platform National Rail station, with 23.7 million entries and exits to the NR platforms in 2015/16. The AATi cast metal anti-slip stair nosings are still in service performing remarkably 16 years later.

As part of the first element in the redesign and redevelopment of the Birmingham Line, Birmingham New Street Station is having major refurbishment works completed. As one of the busiest mainline train stations outside of London, this station demands the best in quality and design of stair nosings, and AATi were on hand to supply them.

Thanks to AATi’s facility to incorporate bespoke patterns within their stair nosings, Superdry customers are able to shop in safety.Being both aesthetically pleasing and particular to the Superdry Stores the new tailor made nosing which AATi has designed still has the usual high safety, longevity and hard wearing characteristics known through some of their existing profiles.

Having placed a number of orders with AATi, River Island opened a new store at the Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, London.Utilising a new and now popular, cost-effective profile (SN30/60) made in Cast Iron with a phosphated surface protection treatment, giving a dark, near-black finish.

Where possible AATi look into the option of modifying existing patterns to incorporate their clients bespoke requirements, thus saving cost and reducing lead times.

Liverpool Street station first opened in 1874 and by 1895 it had the largest number of platforms than any other terminal railway station in London. Liverpool Street is one of the busiest railway stations in London, serving as the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport and other trains serving East London and destinations in the East of England. Not forgetting the integration of London Underground lines; Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines.

AATi supplied the standard but robust SN30/60 cast Iron anti-slip stair nosing to the Museum located in Pinner Memorial Park close to where the artist worked and lived. These items were zinc plated to give a dark black finish and therefore, achieving a sufficient colour contrast with the surrounding surface assuring building regulation compliance.

This flagship store for booksellers Foyles at 107 Charing Cross Road in London is the largest bookstore to be built in the UK this century. It is located just metres from their old store which was its home for more than 100 years.

AATi Rail supplied the SN293/WL/280B on two staircases providing safer access to existing staircases. This nosing gives flexibility with a bevelled back edge reducing the installation cost associated with insetting the nosing into a stair, enabling installation straight onto the existing substrate. AATi worked closely with Client – Network Rail to ensure a high-performance solution was delivered on an extremely high footfall station where stair access can bottleneck.

Selfridges are renowned for their quirky and stylish stores and this eatery and bar was no exception. Local design firm Harrison were tasked with updating an existing restaurant, working closely with Selfridges’ in-house team to create a haven in this busy department store. Andrew Kirk, Harrison’s lead designer on the project, commented, “Amtico was a product chosen by the in-house team as it has been tried and tested in other stores throughout the UK.

As the first school in the UK to be approved for all three IB Programmes, Southbank has flourished from its humble beginnings in London’s South Bank with just a few dozen students, and is now a renowned multi-campus institution in the heart of London. As a result of its success, expansion of its campus was essential to accommodate growing numbers, hence the opening of Cleveland Street in September 2018, allowing an additional 200 students, aged between 11 to 19 years old, to benefit from the IB experience.

The refurbishment of 30 Panton Street has created an outstanding mixed-use development in London. In the entrance hall, full height dark umber anodised wall panels stand out against the polished stone walls and floors. Guiding visitors to upper floors, the aluminium panels have unique integrated lighting strips adding a warm glow to the foyer. Over the office security gates, pale umber anodised SAS200 leads visitors to the stairs, lifts and upper levels. Both the wall panels and ceiling system have a flush, concealed grid echoing the clean lines of the stone wall and floor panels.

Leading Engineering and Construction company VolkerFitzpatrick awarded SAS’s Special Projects division the contract to design, manufacture and install the feature ceiling at Network Rail’s new Meridian Water Station in Enfield. Working closely with concept architect Karakusevic Carson Architects, project delivery architect Acanthus, SAS undertook the contract for the anodised Regency Gold triangular coffered soffit. The bespoke geometric system is a unique feature of the station and lends itself to SAS Special Project’s ability to take on complex and challenging design intent and work seamlessly as part of VolkerFitzpatrick’s delivery team on this signature project.
