Cement based floor screed solution for underfloor heating

A new flooring solution was required as part of a large, high-specification selfbuild housing project on the stunning Archerfield estate in North Berwick. Underfloor heating had been specified for the ground floor of the house and it was important that the chosen floor solution would help to optimise heating efficiency. Given the scale of the project it was also important that the chosen screed solution could be installed quickly over a large area to fit within the build programme. Following initial discussions and a successful pump trial the customer decided to use Tarmac’s TOPFLOW Screed C cement based liquid screed.TOPFLOW Screed C is a free-flowing, cement based liquid screed that can be trafficked after just 24-48 hours and dries within 21-28 days. It can be pumped into place and allows large areas to be covered quickly with up to 120m2 laid in as little as 45 minutes. Fast drying times mean it can be laid later in the programme when the building is fully water-tight and still hit deadlines for installation of flooring. It is ideal for use with underfloor heating systems. As a self-compacting screed, it fully encapsulates heating pipes without leaving any voids and is also a more conductive medium than traditional sand and cement screeds, improving the thermal performance of the system. It is also compatible with most cement based adhesives meaning it can be used with a wide range of flooring types.The fast-drying times and early trafficking characteristics of TOPFLOW Screed C enabled other trades to follow on quickly, helping to provide continuity and efficiency within the client’s build programme. The contractor was delighted with the outcome, commenting on how good the material was to work with and on the excellent finish achieved.

The Audley Stanbridge Earls retirement village is an exclusive residential development of 155 luxury retirement apartments and cottages designed around a Grade II listed Tudor Manor house on a 32 acre site near Romsey, in Hampshire. Underfloor Heating had been specified as part of the design and the large floor areas now needed to be finished with floor screed that could be installed quickly and efficiently within the operating windows provided by the main contractor.TOPFLOW Screed A Thermio + offers a higher thermal conductivity than conventional sand-cement screeds, can be laid thinner and fully encapsulates heating pipes without leaving any voids. This makes it ideal for use with underfloor heating systems where it helps to improve the thermal performance and energy efficiency of buildings. All TOPFLOW Screed A products are made from gypsum and are completely cement free, with a binder made from 98% recycled material. This gives it a lower carbon footprint than a conventional cement-based screeds, saving up to 20.45kg CO2e per m2, making it a more sustainable choice.

Radbrook VillageShrewsburyCemfloor was the screed of choice for Radbrook Village, a mix of 3 and 4 bedroom homes along with 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in the magnificent refurbished Radbrook Hall.Floreat Homes were the developers of this project, which was contracted to SJ Roberts Construction, while the screed was installed by Ryflow Liquid Screeds.Cemfloor provided the ideal solution for the screeds on thisdevelopment. The speed of installation and the fact that floors can be walked on after a day provided the least disruption to other trades and the rapid drying avoided concerns re installation of floor finishes. The benefits to the efficiency of the underfloor heating were also attractive to the project. Cemfloor’s compatibility with underfloor heating, which has grown in popularity in recent years, and the ability to be laid at 50mm gave the builder scope with thickness of insulation and floor finishes. The screed totally encapsulated the underfloor heating pipework and eliminated air voids which ensured optimal heat transfer from the heating pipework to the screed surface.With the advent of flowing screeds, as well as the traditional sand and cement screeds, there is great choice in the market to find a product that suits your needs when it comes to durability, time management and installation.

The project at 83 East Street involved converting an existing office facility into 16 new flats.Soundis was tasked by the main contractor, Innovate Space, to supply an acoustic flooring system in order to provide a comfortable atmosphere for residents to live in and to comply with Approved Document E of Building Regulations.After examining the project, we recommended two different flooring options. The main contractor opted for the option that resulted in a faster installation time.Soundis supplied and our installation partner UK Acoustic Systems installed a Soundis dry screed acoustic flooring which was a high quality, interlocking flooring system using gypsum fibreboard technology, in order to provide a solution for soundproofing difficulties, effectively and efficiently.

The robust monolithic finish provides a high density floating floor with a remarkably shallow profile. This particular Premier Inn in Lewisham required the fitting of dryscreed boards to all upper floors of the project, over 1,500m2 in total. Installation was carried out by UK Acoustic Systems.

This flooring solution is particularly useful for fast-track or tightly scheduled screed laying. The newly laid Rapidur® B5 screed floor is ready to receive floor covering after approx. 3 days – after the achievement of moisture content ≤ 1.8 % CM. Cemfloor Level Plus was supplied by Capital Concrete and installed by Advance Screeding UK ltdClose to the River Thames, and next to Brentford football club in West London, Kew Bridge is a selection of beautiful new homes, as well as shops, cafes and restaurants. It is part of the wider Brentford regeneration project, and developed by EcoWorld.There are a total of 6 blocks on the site, and Cemfloor was the screed of choice for the main contractor.The main contractor had problems with the floor levels on site, so Cemfloor provided a thin screed system to work alongside the unique low profile UFH system; a castellated mat system installed onto Superfoil insulation. The UFH system was supplied by Compact Underfloor Heating. The complete floor build was only 45mm in depth and included acoustic insulation, thermal insulation, castellated UFHsystem, and Cemfloor Level Plus.Advanced Screeding installed Cemfloor Level Plus throughout the development. In total 800m3 of screed was easily pumped to height, over 11 floors without issue,providing an excellent, fast drying low profile floor, and saving significant time on the project.As Cemfloor Level Plus is a ready mixed solution it removed the need for any site mixing, material storage and material disposal from the site. Given the volume of screed required; if a self leveling compound product was used this would have equated to approx. 55,000 x 25kg bags of material having to be mixed on site.

The well known traditional British cheese producer, Long Clawson Dairy, required dairy flooring renovation at their Melton Mowbray site. The refurbishment areas included a number of production areas, including the Cheese Room floor. The client needed a hardwearing, slip-resistant, hygienic flooring to cover areas of approximately 200m².Having previously worked with The National Flooring Company on other projects, the client contacted the Degafloor Approved Installer to ask for advice on the best solution for the upcoming works. As the factory is in constant production, attention to detail was required regarding dust and fumes.Drainage was another consideration for the dairy flooring. The drainage was required to be fully operational after the installation, so for best results the contractors recommended using the Degafloor Quartz Trowelled with Aggregate resin flooring. QTA is a trowel-applied system with a quartz scatter finish that will not run into the drains upon application.Long Clawson Dairy needed a flooring solution that could be installed quickly and deliver long-term performance. Degafloor resin systems are based on ultra fast curing methyl methacrylate technology that enables rapid installation and cures as fast as two hours after application.The dairy flooring project was completed in just 6 days over 2 separate shifts. The fast curing properties of Degafloor MMA resin flooring enabled production to commence just 2 hours after the new floors and coving were installed. The Operations Director of Long Clawson Dairy was extremely happy with the end result.

Fast-Track SolutionClient: Randox LaboratoriesMain Contractor: Corramore ConstructionScreed Installed By: O'Neill Concrete Flooring LtdScreed Supplied By: Robinson ConcreteCemfloor C30F6 was chosen for this project due to the fast-tracked construction of a new laboratory to provide urgently needed Covid-19 test kits.As part of their on-going commitment to produce much needed Covid-19 test kits; Randox Laboratories Ltd invested in a new facility at its existing headquarters in Crumlin, Co Antrim.The specialised laboratory, the development of which was fast-tracked over the space of four weeks, is the first step in a wider diagnostics investment programme from the company.Given the tight construction programme; Cemfloor were contacted and asked to propose a solution for the project.Cemfloor CT C30F6 was specified and over a period of just 2 - days; 3800m2 was installed by O'Neill Concrete Flooring Ltd with the screed being supplied by Robinson Concrete Ltd.Due to the high early strength of Cemfloor C30; the screed was loaded with access lifts 3 - days after installation which ensured that the build programme was able to continue with minimal disruption.A liquid surface DPM was used to allow the vinyl flooring be installed onto the screed only 7 - days after installation.Due to the incredible amount of effort by all parties involved; the entire project finished ahead of schedule with no issues.

Addenbrookes Hospital Surge Centre2000m² Of CemfloorA temporary surge facility on the site of Addenbrookes Hospital to relieve pressure on the main hospital as part ofthe NHS' regional surge planFloor Screeding Solutions installed 2,000m2 of Cemfloor, the chosen screed for the project, which was supplied by Mick George Concrete, Cambridge.With the rising case numbers of Corona virus during the pandemic, hospitals were coming under increasing pressure for more critical care beds, and Surge Plans were put in place across the country to help alleviate this pressure.Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge sought to construct a ‘Surge Centre’ to cope with the additional demands on the hospital, and Cemfloor was chosen for the project due to its faster installation time and drying time compared to traditional sand and cement screeds. This helped to keep the project on track with its tight building schedule.Lewis Deck construction offered a strong light weight flooring option for the large pour area. As Cemfloor is a flowing screed, 500m2 of screed per day was poured over this by Dave Washbrook and his team from Floor Screeding Solutions, eliminating the need for on-site mixing.The main advantage Cemfloor has over other flowing screeds is the quicker drying times, and that it can accept foot traffic after 24 / 48 hours, meaning that construction could continue quickly and efficiently to meet the project deadline.

As part of the iconic Manchester Central Library's three-year overhaul to make its facilities more accessible, a bespoke flooring solution was supplied of Resuflor Terrazzo and Resuflor Screed to complete this refurbishment and give the buidling a great new appeal. The terrazzo provided a super smooth decorative floor and the epoxy screed incorporated fine aggregate on the surface to the stairs and ramped areas of the building to promote an anti-slip finish.The multi-million pound refurbishment project saw public entrances of the Grade ll listed building restored to their 1930's appearance. New staircases and lift shafts were inserted to improve access throughout the building.The brief on this project was to provide a modern functional flooring solution that complemented the library's unique neo-classical style.The besposke design of Resuflor Terrazzo was supplied in a special colour pallet to complement the neo-classical design features of the library. The system was chosen because of its seamless properties, ensuring a flat, continuous floor surface with extreme durability for a long term solution.The product was also used as a pre-cast terrazzo system on some central stair areas of the library.Resuflor Screed was supplied and applied on the ramped areas as a semi-decorative finish with a special aggregate bead incorporated for improved slip resistance.The end result was a functional floor capable of withstanding heavy footfall that fitted with the aesthetic requirements of the overall design superbly.

Cemfloor was chosen for this project due to its compatibility with the various types of high-end luxury floor coverings and for its reduced drying time which allowed the project to proceed with the installation of the flooring without any disruptions.Multiplex were the main contractors for this project, with the screed installed by Progressive Group Limited.The new ten-storey residential building features 221 apartments from studio suites up to four-bedroom penthouses, exquisitely designed by PLP Architecture. Lincoln Square features London’s unparalleled residential amenities space of 17,000 square feet (1600 square meters) by world-class designer Patricia Urquiola.Lincoln Square overlooks the LSE library, the former Land Registry Building, New Square Chambers and the Royal Courts of Justice opened by Queen Victoria in 1882. The views of St Paul’s Cathedral, the Shard and the Gherkin showcase the glorious London skyline.Cemfloor is a high-performance cement based liquid screed which provides the ideal solution for the domestic floor market. Its flowing properties make it easy and fast to install, and yet it is based on cement and therefore has none of the concerns inherent with other flowing screeds. There are no special measures required before applying adhesives or floor finishes to it and, it dries relatively quickly when compared to other flowing or “ordinary” screed materials.The limited space available on site was also a factor to be considered and was resolved by using Cemfloor Screed. Project Location:81 Piccadilly, LondonProduct Used:Cemfloor Level PlusCemfloor Level Plus was used in a project involving the renovation of a 5-story building.The buildings existing floor was completely removed to allow for an increase in ceiling height, which necessitated the installation of service trenches for wiring.Cemfloor Level Plus was poured to a depth ranging from 12mm to 60mm above the services, providing a viable floor solution to accommodate the required ceiling room. Additionally a 3mm latex layer will be applied, followed by a 2.5mm vinyl layer.The screed was chosen for its many benefits, including its cost effectiveness and ease of installation which meant that there were significant savings across all 5 floors when it came to time and labour.
