The FM company of a large Yorkshire Hospital engaged with wall & door protection specialists, Yeoman Shield, to resolve the unsightly and problematic damage that was occurring to fire doors in a busy specialist unit.Such damage, caused by the everyday passage of people, trolleys and equipment, if not attended to, may have become detrimental to the functioning of the fire doors.Yeoman Shield were able to provide a comprehensive fire rated door protection system, which when installed does not affect the fire integrity, to help combat and break the damage cycle, helping to prolong the life of the doors.Door Edge protectors, either FD60 or FD30, according to a doors rating, were installed to the vulnerable leading and hinged edges of the door to prevent chipping and splintering and helping to maintain the recommended 3mm gap between doors and frames.The leaves of the doors were covered with Yeoman Shield’s 2mm thick FalmouthEx protection panels at either full or half height dependent on where the impact was more prevalent, preventing dents or holes from manifesting in the future.Standard glazing beads were replaced with PVCu clad units, complete with corresponding intumescent strip, helping to protect an element of the door much prone to damage.A further part of the fire door refurbishment project was the addition of an Architrave and Stop Lath protection system. A state of the art building solely designed to build, run and service Aston Martin’s Formula 1 racing vehicles. Built by the side of the historic Silverstone Grand Prix racing track in Northamptonshire.The Brief in BriefThe project requirements demanded good DB ratings, full height doors, privacy for Mission Control with Smart Glass and privacy to Exec area with blinds. An Atrium to flood light into the ‘street’ below. Plus offices, meeting rooms, a Mission Control racing hub, a large Atrium screen over indoor areas, open plan design offices, breakout and communal areas.Komfort’s SolutionPrior to the start of the project we had numerous pre-start meetings with the design team and H&S visits with our external advisors to ensure the project would run smoothly from the start.To achieve a system and design the client desired, Komfort built mock-up sample office onsite during the design stage to highlight the design elements such as acoustic double glazed glass in Polar 100 and our deflection head system. We also supplied samples of our blinds, with the system in situ to demonstrate the operating fixtures and fittings. All samples were supplied in the clients choice of colour including matt black blinds to match the trackwork.The double glazed full length Atrium required teams working on both sides of the glass, installation from the office side and safety (fall arrest) from the street side. The atrium glazing over the machine shop area required glass lifting equipment, to ensure the fire rated glass could be sealed properly from both sides.The client made numerous changes to the design during installation, which had to be accommodated. The final project involved 800 sqm of glass and 50+ Sonik doors throughout the building site. It was a challenge and one that Komfort rose to admirably.The end resultModern open plan offices with a selection of meeting rooms. Large executive offices with blinds/locks for privacy. Union Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer of high-speed industrial doors, has completed one of its largest individual projects with the supply and installation of 40 of its rapid-roller doors at Princes Group UK’s (Princes) food production site in Long Sutton. Having supplied Princes with more than 100 high-speed industrial doors across seven of its sites since 2010, Leeds-based Union Industries has installed a further 40 rapid-roller doors at its Long Sutton site near Spalding in Lincolnshire.

When the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort was planned, the project included a 7-bay fire / ambulance station which featured a garden style theme to enable the buildings to harmonise with the green surrounding and the nearby Theme Park. Bolton Gate were specified to provide fourteen electric folding doors which included a special green powder coating, Lexan vision panels and faux louvres to each door. In addition, the doors had to be designed to resist typhoon loadings of up to 3Kpa, were manufactured in Bolton and shipped to Hong Kong where they were installed by the local agent Deacon.

Lomax + Wood supplied and fitted their UK designed and tested windows for a large development in leafy Essex. These made-to-order timber casement windows and doors were supplied to seven plots of luxury executive five-bedroom detached houses.

A beautiful Yorkshire family home has found a new lease of life with the addition of aluminium doors and windows replacing the existing timber frames. Achieved using Reynaers bi-folding and sliding doors; CF 68 and CP 130, as well as door and window systems; CS 68 and ES 50. Alongside striking visuals, the unique design of the frames makes for excellent performance characteristics, meeting the highest requirements when it comes to insulation, stability and safety, while perfectly framing the garden views. Elsewhere, aluminium windows have improved day-to-day usability, with sliding opening options reducing draughts and improving ventilation.

Bespoke garage and car port doors from Rundum Meir, which provide natural ventilation and daylighting into enclosed garage spaces, can deliver a seamless aesthetic result in contemporary architecture featuring vertical timber board-on-batten cladding. This is illustrated at the Abode development in Cambridgeshire, where the architects delivered uniformity across different housing styles using a limited palette of materials. Horizontal and vertical cladding was extended into the doors for the car ports manufactured in matching oak. These ventilated doors enable fresh air and daylight to flow through the car ports from the rear gardens, adding an interesting visual dimension.

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) is a group of industry-led manufacturing R&D, innovation and skills facilities supported by a network of Partners across Scotland, all working together to transform the future of manufacturing and provide an innovative and multi-use hub that brings together Scotland’s brightest minds in industry, academia and the public sector.The design of the space focuses on collaboration, with a variety of private spaces specified to create areas for focused work and larger group meetings in turn.Planet, working through our northern contracting team, joined the project to provide our expertise in the design, manufacture and installation of a number of our glass partition screens and door solutions to meet the interior design by architects HLM.The standout contribution to this project was the use of Planet’s PURE20XL (38dB Rw) extended screens to produce glass meeting pods, expertly cantilevered to produce an eye-catching ‘floating’ effect. Access to the pods was provided by Planet’s high acoustic performance IsoPro glazed pivoting doors (42dB Rw). Our popular single-glazed PURE20 (38dB Rw) and double-glazed PURE100 (54dB Rw) frameless partitions were utilised for the fronts for many of the meeting rooms and laboratories — along with tech panels to house integrated room booking systems — while some extended PURE100XL screens was placed on the void edge of the digital seminar rooms.Finally, structural atrium glazing facilitated the passage of natural light deep into the internal space — perfect for the inspirational innovative environment NMIS aims to provide to its users.

This project was undertaken for a global financial services company with a long and distinguished pedigree. One of the world’s most recognisable investment management brands, it has offices in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia.As leading innovators in the design and manufacture of adaptable and reusable solid and glazed partitions, Radii were a perfect fit for this project.We designed a series of systems based on three of our existing Linear 30 single-glazed partitions (Rw 40 dB) and our Parallel 50 and 100  double-glazed partitions (Rw 45 & 50 dB), combined with Hogan pivot doors throughout.To accommodate deflection, we created a bespoke blind box detail capable of a +/- 15mm lateral movement. We also created new extrusions to achieve a +/-59mm deflection, used to deal with vertical movement in isolated locations.Installation of our system was complex because of the variety of partitions used, combined with physical variations between storeys. This meant we had to survey every part of the building separately to ensure our partitions and doors fit perfectly. We co-ordinated with other trades to ensure installation was exactly as required.We began this major fit-out in January 2023 and completed it within 20 weeks – well within schedule. The final partition systems exceeded the prescribed acoustic ratings, while the overall project achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and LEED ‘Gold’ ratings. We were delighted to be awarded with a contractor rating of 9.9 out of 10 for what was a very complex and demanding design and installation.

A bronze façade featuring integrated Rundum Meir garage doors for two new townhouses in central Manchester has been uniquely designed to reflect the architecture of the nearby John Rylands Library, one of the city’s most famous neo-Gothic buildings. The duo of four storey, high specification private dwellings designed by Snook Architects for regeneration specialist Watch This Space have given new purpose to an unused site nestling between two post-industrial buildings close to Deansgate. Their full height bronze façade delivers a striking external appearance that takes a distinctive visual cue from the library, located opposite. The aluminium façade of both townhouses features laser cut and acid-etched lacy blind tracery patterns that match those in the windows of the library, a late Victorian neo-Gothic building which opened in 1900 and is now part of the University of Manchester. The lacy pattern extends over the full height of the façade which includes large folding/sliding shutters. These balance privacy with natural light requirements for residents during the day whilst being eye-catching at night as internal light shines through the laser cut pattern. This design extends into the twin side sliding sectional garage doors manufactured and installed by Rundum Meir, which effectively deliver a sliding façade at street level. Working closely with architect Neil Dawson, Rundum Meir’s designers were able to replicate the design with total consistency and manufacture in Germany using acid etching across the six aluminium sections. Neil Dawson of Snook Architects said: “Watch This Space approached us to look at how they could transform this city centre site and we immediately saw the potential to take design inspiration from the nearby John Rylands Library. The resulting façade is unique, and through the movement of the shutters and garage doors during daily life it is constantly moving and changing. “The laser cut pattern means that the building really comes to life at night as the internal light makes the intricate façade design a stunning feature. To be able to match this styling in the garage doors was crucially important and the result reflects the bespoke craftsmanship provided by Rundum Meir.” The twin Rundum Meir sliding garage doors each provide a clear opening of 3.8 m for easy vehicle access from the street. Hand made using extruded aluminium, the fully automated bespoke garage doors have an automated pedestrian door as well as the side sliding door that demonstrate the design flexibility offered by Rundum Meir, who create every garage door to meet project requirements.

A catastrophic fire meant the original property at this site was uninhabitable and beyond repair. Planning permission was granted for a new house to be built, of a similar size, but different proportions. The new home has been exquisitely designed to be in keeping with the natural surrounding landscape and the traditional building that was there previously.Clement was delighted to be chosen to manufacture bespoke steel windows and doors for all elevations of the property. The EB20 range with multi point locking was specified. Offering elegant slim frames, a high level of thermal efficiency and when combined with multi point locking, it meets the enhanced security standard - PAS24.Attention to detail was crucial on this project, not least because of all the different leaded light designs on the steel doors and windows. In total 38 windows and 14 sets of steel doors were manufactured, all power coated RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey (matt). Beautiful Eaton and Kensington handles were chosen to complement the fenestration which were all painted to match the frames. Jon James, Contracts Manager at Vale Southern said:“The new steel windows and doors are a major feature of this stunning property; in line with the rest of the building they are of a very high standard. Clement have stuck to the various time scales and have helped us with any issues that have arisen after. We have worked together on a few projects now and have been pleased with their service.”

Our client, One 17 Design, acted as Architects, Interior Designers and Project Managers for this superb project with involvement from inception through to completion. Their brief was to create a home office / garden room in the grounds of an existing detached home, which was done by extending the detached garage.The material palette for the garden room predominately featured oak and steel. Blackened oak cabinetry and steel fenestration provide a striking contrast against the natural oak frame and cladding. Clever detailing in the relationship between the oak frame and steel doors adds a contemporary twist. The bricks for the outside of the building were selected to match the brickwork of the existing bungalow. Bespoke Clement steel windows and doors from the W20 range were chosen for the project, including an interior door, fitted with reeded glass that leads to the bathroom. All handles were powder coated black to match the steel frames.The project won “Best amazing space” at the 2022 Northern Design Awards.Freddie Garside, Partner and Director at One 17 Design, said:“We and our client were delighted with the finished doors and screens. The narrow framed black steel doors complement the natural oak frame perfectly. We recently completed a noteworthy project, supplying custom-designed sliding louvre doors for a delighted customer in Goring-On-Thames. Nestled alongside the picturesque River Thames in South Oxfordshire, Goring is known for its charming village and serene surroundings.The star of this project is a stunning detached house that now boasts the distinctive touch of Sunshield's sliding louvre doors. These panels, meticulously crafted to perfection, cover an expansive area, each measuring just over 5 square meters. While two of these panels gracefully glide along rails spanning 4.8 meters, the third panel commands an impressive 10-meter rail.One of the key highlights of this installation is the meticulous attention to detail. To ensure a flawless and seamless appearance, the rails were seamlessly integrated into the floor and ceiling during the house's construction phase. This thoughtful approach not only enhances the aesthetics but also guarantees a smooth operation that aligns seamlessly with the house's architectural integrity.The sliding frames of these louvre doors are made with Western Red Cedar louvres, positioned at a precise 25-degree angle. This angle not only offers a visually appealing touch but also allows for captivating views through the panels. While the wooden louvers remain fixed, the sliding panels effortlessly glide from left to right and back again, all operated manually for ease and convenience.In terms of aesthetics, these sliding louvre doors are coated in RAL 7016 anthracite grey, lending a modern and sophisticated touch to the house's façade. However, these panels are not just about looks; they serve a trifecta of functions. First and foremost, they provide effective protection against both wind and sun, ensuring that the residents can enjoy their outdoor spaces in comfort, regardless of the weather. Secondly, they contribute significantly to the house's overall aesthetic appeal, blending seamlessly with the owner's vision and elevating the property's curb appeal.This project stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering not just louvre doors, but transformative solutions that enhance the functionality, aesthetics, and comfort of outdoor spaces. With Sunshield's sliding louvre doors, this Goring-On-Thames residence now enjoys a unique and dynamic architectural element that not only adds value but also elevates the overall living experience.

Stopgap 700 flexible smoothing underlayment and Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier have been used in the refurbishment of a thirty-year-old Routemaster bus to create a library for children at Tolworth Nursery. On the top deck of the bus, Stopgap 700 flexible smoothing underlayment was applied over a firmly secured plywood subfloor. On both floors, Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier was used to install premium fibre-bonded carpet tiles. Styccobond F66 solvent-free contact adhesive was used to install carpet tiles on the bus’s staircase. Stycco Flex, a rapid-curing flexible adhesive, was then used to attach the aluminium stair nosings.

Tucked away on the outskirts of Brigg, Lincolnshire, Scawby Brook is a carbon neutral, sustainable house that has been sensitively created for modern living and to complement the surrounding wooded setting. The home has featured on self-build TV show, Grand Designs.Designed by local architect Kate Kelly, the connection of the dwelling with nature was a key focus of the client's brief with the house featuring an abundance of glazing to refl­ect the natural environment and provide the best possible views of the rural landscape.A local project manager, Mike Hill was employed to deliver the project and source materials and labour from the local area. Mike specified Kestrel Aluminium window and door systems to provide a complete glazing solution for the project based on previous experience and the knowledge that this would oer the best solution in terms of the quality and budget demanded by the client.The multiple windows are a mixture of fixed or opening vents, with multi-point espagnolette locking PAS24 compliant security. Used in conjunction with low U-value double-glazed units achieving a U-Value of 1.2 W/m2K they ensure the building is safe, secure and energy efficient.

The scope and challenge:Millions of people visit Edinburgh each year for its renowned history, iconic buildings and vibrant social scene. With year-round visitors from the rest of the UK and overseas, there is a growing need for accommodation that combines the heritage of the city with high-quality, comfortable stays.Old Town Chambers offers exactly that, as a collection of luxury serviced apartments located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Each room showcases the building’s fascinating history in a globally-renowned part of the city, teamed with contemporary furnishings and distinctive architecture.The original Old Town Chambers, a listed building from the mid-18th Century, is home to 50 high-quality apartments, accessed via Roxburgh Court, which sits just behind the Royal Mile. In 2021, the owners of the hotel had the opportunity to refurbish the existing building and expand their footprint by taking over an adjoining address – 329 High Street – which would add 24 new high-end apartments to the property across three floors and a mezzanine level, as well as a street-level reception area, bar and restaurant.Häfele was called upon by Chris Stewart Group, who were overseeing the refurbishment, to provide a suite of suitable door ironmongery for the apartments at 329 High Street. The schedule would need to complement both the new, modern apartments added to the hotel and the more traditional reception, bar and restaurant areas.The solution:Working closely with Chris Stewart Group and architects ISA, Häfele developed a tailored hardware schedule and specification. For the communal areas of the hotel, specialist Frank Allart​​​​​​​ handles were selected in a satin nickel finish to complement the traditional style of the space. For the apartments, Häfele’s stainless steel mitred lever handle provided the perfect solution.​​​​​ Furthermore, given the complexity of the requirements, it made sense to utilise the Häfele to Order service – which allows customers to order their products cut, labelled and delivered to their exact requirements. This included both phased floor-by-floor and door-by-door packaging to make the installation process as efficient as possible for contractors Thomas Johnstone Ltd.The outcome:Karen Brown, head of interiors for Chris Stewart Group, worked closely with Ken on the 329 High Street project. She said: “The attention to detail offered by Häfele Projects was excellent; ironmongery can be a minefield but Ken and the team listened to what we wanted and knew exactly what to apply to the project.“There were some intricacies to consider, which were met with experience and a knowledgeable approach. For example, some doors required a lever handle on one side but we were retaining the existing door knob on the other. Getting the two to marry was looking difficult and would’ve been an ongoing maintenance issue for the hotel if not resolved, but Ken suggested connecting them via a spindle which instantly resolved the matter.“We were able to meet and discuss our requirements in-depth, explore a huge range of samples and Häfele Projects were more than happy to liaise with the contractor direct to enable us to focus elsewhere. This project has really opened our eyes to what Häfele is capable of, and we’ve been able to consider other project ranges too which we intend to utilise on future developments, like lighting and small appliances.“We’re already working together with Häfele on another hotel project in Glasgow, and there is huge scope for where our partnership can go in the future.”

Prehung Doors have recently specified P C Henderson’s Roomflex folding door hardware to create a room divider for two residential project’s in London. The project brief required a room divider to separate a large dining room and lounge into two rooms. The client required a modern, functional design which would allow the rooms to be seamlessly opened up as one. P C Henderson’s innovative Roomflex folding door hardware was identified as the best solution for the project.

The Coborn Centre for Adolescent Mental Health, opened in 2006, is one of the first purpose-built adolescent units in the UK. The Centre offers in-patient and day care services for young people between 12 and 18 years old. With 12 bedrooms, the Galaxy Ward provides specialist Intensive Care services for young people who are experiencing significant emotional or mental distress. Working with young people, their families and carers, Galaxy Ward aims to provide young people with the best possible care whilst respecting their views, beliefs and culture.  After great consideration, they selected our en-suite door, seeing it as the only solution to balance safety, whilst ensuring privacy and dignity for those staying at the facility.

The next generation of CS 38 is now available from Reynaers – Slim Line 38 (SL 38) is a highly insulated inward and outward opening aluminium window and door system, that combines elegance and comfort with a unique design. The special slender steel look offers the perfect windows and doors for modern architecture and the renovation of steel-frames, respecting the original design but offering a thermally improved solution. Large-framed Crittall Windows complement the industrial aesthetic and gives the building a unique character and identity of its own. The fabricator on the project was AWS Turner Fain Ltd, part of AWS Group.

Twin Rundum Original ‘round the corner’ side sliding doors have been manufactured and installed by bespoke garage door specialist Rundum Meir UK as part of the North Quay development in Hayle, Cornwall.Their vision for North Quay is to transform a former industrial area into an exciting new coastal quarter for people to live, work, shop, eat, stay and enjoy the stunning waterside location. Key to this is high quality design by which has already been independently recognised through the project winning in the 2020 Housing Design Awards.Within the first phase of the transformational project, which includes around 140 dwellings and public realm development by FCBStudios, as well as office space and waterside commercial buildings, are two residential units with garages. Rundum Meir was approached to explore the potential for twin bespoke doors with radiused corners at their adjacent edge which would make a statement feature of the garage doors. This design was perfectly suited to the Rundum Original, which slides along a track as it opens sideways before turning a corner to run along an inner side wall of the garage. Equally important, however, was the ability to manufacture the garage door in materials that would enable aesthetic goals to be achieved whilst being suitable for the harsh coastal conditions, dominated by an aggressive saline atmosphere.Rundum Meir was able to use Accoya for the timber slats that make up each of the doors. Accoya is ideal for conditions of this kind, and for meeting the project’s sustainability aims, given its superior durability and FSC accreditation.Marine grade stainless steel was used to create the U-channels which guide the Rundum Original as it slides, along with the PPC tracks and binding. This will ensure the key mechanical elements of the two doors have maximum resistance to corrosion for a long design life.In line with the high specification of all the dwellings under construction, the Rundum Meir garage doors are also automated. A door-mounted motor is activated via a remote control device and it is HomeLink compatible for safe and secure operation from inside a vehicle.

This new regeneration project by Crest Nicholson, boasts high quality residences from studio apartments to four bedroom homes. The building provided much needed new housing for the area. P C Henderson's Rustic 80 sliding barn door hardware has recently been specified for a home renovation of a period property in Kent. The 11 month renovation included a complete rewire, full house re-plaster, a full damp-proof course, new heating and plumbing system and a new kitchen and bathroom. The couple also required some sliding door hardware for the properties bedroom and bathroom doors. Our Rustic sliding barn door hardware was identified as the best solution for the project due to its beautifully crafted barn style hangers and rustic effect.

Coopers installed FireMaster fire curtains with smoke control over the lift door openings on each of the ground and upper seven floors and two on the basement so a total of forty eight curtains. An important part of the design of the building on the ground and first floor was to subtly integrate the fire curtain headbox and side guides into the lift opening.

The project was to create a partitioned living space with the requirements of ample storage, traditional style, integrated LED lighting and a sliding door mechanism. After seeking advice from our Holland office, Ralpine Designs decided that our Husky 100 sliding door hardware was the right project for the job. Using a library and display unit, the living room and dining room could be separated into two rooms or opened up as one big room when required. The system was used to hold two biparting wooden doors, utilising a face fixed aluminium track for added quality.

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems' expertise in transportation applications made us an ideal partner for the Doncaster Transport Interchange project. In working together with the project’s engineers, automatic sliding door systems were determined to be the optimal solution for the bus depot due their reliability and safety. The clean lines of the ASSA ABLOY sliding doors also complemented other elements of the broader French gate Centre urban renewal project, which includes an integrated train station and car park for visitors to the nearby city centre, in addition to the shopping mall.

Surespan have recently completed the design and manufacturing of a large stainless steel hydraulic opening recessed floor door for a project in Sri-Lanka.The ProjectThe $850 million Waterfront integrated Resort (Cinnamon Life) is Sri Lanka’s largest and most iconic mixed development, located in the capital city of Colombo. Balmond Studio has designed and constructed the resort as a ‘city within a city’ offering two 5-star luxury hotels, offices, residences and premium retail and entertainment. They hope the resort will become one of the iconic and identifiable landmarks in Asia.The no-limits project is symbolic of Sri Lanka’s ambition, drive, and growth. The ProductSurespan were approached to manufacture the hatch to suit an opening of 6.5m by 4.1m and capable of withstanding a slow-moving wheel load of 10kN/m2. The pan-type door will be re-cessed for receiving 30mm of Natural Stone Slab infill with an approximate infill weight of 2 tonnes.Features The largest recessed floor hatch has been manufactured to provide a theoretical sound reduction of 45dB. To assist with installation, lifting points were designed to the frame exterior.

This North London family home has undergone a total transformation by our client Sara-Int Renovations Ltd. Two existing extensions have been demolished, the front entrance has been repositioned and the lower ground floor entirely rebuilt. The terrace off the living room was also reconstructed and now benefits from a spiral staircase which connects to the garden. The newly designed house showcases various styles of bespoke Clement steel window door screens and partitions, all with genuine T bars. A recently completed residential complex in the centre of London is where you will find this magnificent building which has been finished to the highest standard. The reception area is welcomed by a circular entrance with a pool of water at the centre. The stone that's been used is a pale cream and the metal work is a light bronze. We provided the pull door handles which complement the colours and materials used. The have been finished in a dark bronze adding a dramatic entrance across the front of the building and on the main entrance. You can find a range of finishes which we offer across a range of products. The front of the building benefits from planted up areas which breaks up the hard lines, this along with the curved stone seated areas creates a pleasant place to sit and sip a coffee. There have also made great use of lighting in the main lobby area and the reception is grand and welcoming. The style of our handles used are Ash 103.

A new state-of-the-art Jaguar Landrover showroom was built for the Helston Group in Taunton. The facilities reflect the latest corporate identity concept and comes complete with a new workshop, multi-storey rooftop parking, and an interactive showroom configuration with display systems.The showroom features wide open spaces and a large sales area to provide the customer with a first-class experience. It also affords staff members greater visibility throughout the showroom and forecourt areas. Lusso were appointed by main contractor, Acheson Construction, to provide internal glazing throughout the showroom and workshop area. Lusso 25 frameless single glazed partitioning system and complimentary Lusso glass doors were installed to form individual offices which allow privacy when needed, whilst still maintaining visibility of the showroom. Lusso 105 double glazed frameless partitions were installed to provide a barrier between the showroom and workshop area.The use of stylish internal glazing as part of the backdrop to the stunning Jaguar Landrover range certainly makes an impact. The end result blends functionality and aesthetics, providing a stylish and contemporary showroom worthy of the prestigious Jaguar Land Rover brand.

The £45 million world-class School of Management is the flagship building of the University of Bath. The seven-storey building brings together the entire school under one roof and is a place to inspire new levels of collaboration and showcase the excellent learning, research, and industry partnerships available.The three principles of the design are flexibility, transparency, and collaboration. At the centre of the building is an impressive atrium with a feature steel staircase.   Within the atrium is the pavilion, a double height space flooded with natural light has been designed as a hub of activity where great minds meet. The buildings two arms emerge from a central node, each wing housing an array of academic and research space. The design brief called for openness and transparency which was achieved by the use of Lusso glazed partitioning throughout. The Lusso 25 glazed system and Silenzio doors were used to enhance and divide up space which at the same time allows natural light to filter through the building and encourage connectivity. Where the design required glass partitions in excess of 3.5 metres height the Lusso 105 glazed system was selected to meet the structural requirement which has created a visually impactful atrium.

Keen to provide a safe and comfortable environment for their customers, Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff chose Yeoman Shield fire rated door protection products to help maintain and protect the condition of important fire doors.Owned by Live Nation, the concert and event venue receives over half a million visitors yearly resulting in the doors, situated both back and front of house, experiencing damage and unsightly marking from pedestrians and the movement of trolleys and equipment, etc. Not only can this have a detrimental effect on aesthetics but more importantly on the functioning of the fire door.To help protect from such damage Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives installed door edge protectors as well as protective push plates to doors in back of house areas such as workshop, cutting room, and boiler cellars etc.Front of house doors, such as the entrances to the auditorium, which experience a huge amount of pedestrian traffic passing through, also had door edge protectors fitted along with half height door protection panels. In our first in a series of case studies, we’ve invited FireDNA Alliance Partner, Steve Neilson to share his experiences using the FireDNA system to inspect and catalogue 9422 fire doors in three months, on behalf of Mitie, for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service is the fourth largest in the world and ensures the safety and wellbeing of the people in Scotland. Operating out of 547 buildings across 357 sites, these centres are managed by the UK’s largest ‘Facilities Management’ provider Mitie.Following several months of discussion between Mitie and the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service regarding the status of the fire doors across their property portfolio, a tender was issued for an extensive fire door inspection and evaluation programme to be undertaken.Having secured the works through competitive tender, we further engaged with Mitie and the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service team. Working through their property asset registers in detail we gained a full understanding of the scope and requirements of the project.Following weeks of detailed project planning and final agreement on the timeline, it was evident that we had just over 3 months to inspect and report our findings on 9422 fire doors across the 357 site locations, and this all had to be done during the winter months of late 2021 and early 2022.In order to deliver on such a tight timescale, absolute dedication and collaboration was required from all parties…the project managers, admin staff and fire inspectors as well as the teams at Mitie and Scottish Fire & Rescue Service. To support this challenging task we armed our resources with a new cloud based system called ‘FireDNA’.We had been approached by FireDNA a couple of years earlier to see if we would be interested in helping to beta test their new ‘Fire Door Inspection and Monitoring Software’, to which we agreed, little did we know at the time that this software would prove invaluable to us further down the line!Deploying teams of up to 10 Fire Inspectors at a time, armed with the new and now completed FireDNA Inspection and Monitoring App, we set about working through the phased inspection schedule.Having been involved in the development testing of the FireDNA software, we had no doubt this system would, increase the speed in which the surveys were carried out, and dramatically reduce the time and effort in reporting the findings. Working closely with the FireDNA software support team, who assisted us in the initial software training, our Fire Inspectors were able to work efficiently and effectively ‘at pace’ through the challenge. The FireDNA App also has ‘LiveChat’ built in so any questions or queries by our operatives in the field were easily and quickly dealt with by the FireDNA team, which meant there was very little downtime during the inspection process.One of the great benefits of using the FireDNA App is that everything is ‘real-time’ so our office-based project managers could immediately see how the inspections were progressing. Once the inspection data and supporting photography was in the system report generation was largely automated and nicely formatted into MS Word and Excel documents.These reports could then be initially shared internally with our remedial work/replacement estimators for accurate cost estimates, who in turn could then produce accurate cost estimates and quotes for the works required as each buildings inspection was completed. This created a very fast, efficient and accessible workflow process for the whole team.FireDNA is not only a fantastic fire inspection and reporting tool, but also initiates the ‘golden thread’ of information, allowing building owners and managers like the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service and Mitie to take ownership of the ‘live data’ in the system, which can easily be updated and shared as each fire door asset is inspected, monitored and maintained year-on-year, which will soon become the minimum legal requirement.FireDNA also enables building owners and facility managers to create status reports for O&M compliance, which can be shared with insurers and the like, as well as appointing contractors and maintenance teams to carry out and catalogue remedial works and new installations, which are all date-stamped and locked into the system.In our view, anyone involved in fire inspections, installations, planned preventative maintenance and asset recording of passive fire products, such as fire doors, doorsets and fire screens should be using the FireDNA system. For duty holders such as building owners, facility managers, landlords and surveyors to make sure the assets they are responsible for are safe and compliant and the data unambiguous and accessible by all that need it, including residents.We believe FireDNA is the best system on the market and anyone who uses it will appreciate not only the time and money savings but importantly how this centralised system improves work standards across the full lifecycle of passive fire products. Steve Neilson – FireDNA Alliance Partner – Scotland
