The Outdoor Deck Company were commissioned to refurbish the external terraces of several top floor apartments located on Nile Street, London. The brand new `grad` invisible fixing clip deck system was supplied and installed by the Outdoor Deck Company, their first ever `grad` installation in the UK. The unique clip and groove design at the heart of the `grad` system means that decks can be installed about 30% faster than competing products. The `grad` system can be retrofitted onto existing timber joists, installed from scratch on top of a new timber sub-frame, or mounted onto the bespoke rail system.

We’re always pleased to hear about how our products have helped customers with their renovation projects. However, we were particularly delighted when one of our Partners Roger, of R and A Pressure Washing Services, sent us these photographs of a poolside deck renovation he recently completed.The customer had previously treated their poolside deck with a decking oil, purchased on the high street. As you can see from the photo, the decking looked dull and tired and was not at all complementing the lovely rooftop views from the pool.We’ve had many customers tell us that the high street decking oils they had previously bought had failed. They were continuously having to sand and re-oil their decking to keep it looking smart. By investing in a good quality product, you could reduce both the time and money it takes you to constantly strip and re-oil your decking and replacing it with easy, low maintenance decking.Aquadecks, for example, is water-based and is easy to apply and maintain, with no sanding or stripping required. Sometimes, it’s worth investing in a more expensive product, such as Aquadecks, at the beginning, to save you money in the future.So, how did Roger rescue his customer’s poolside deck?Firstly, he mechanically sanded the deckingTo remove all the old oil from the surface of the decking, Roger sanded the decking with an electric sander. How the decking looked after sanding can be seen in the photo below.Whilst this step is often completed by professionals, for the DIYer it’s going to be easier to remove the old oils using Aquanett wood oil remover (if it’s a different sort of coating you’re removing then use Dilunett or Prepdeck).If you don’t want to sand back your decking, follow the steps below if you’re removing oils.Aquanett can be used to remove teak and other oils from all woods blackened by UV rays. It will prepare your decking for a new coating and improve penetration and adhesion. Its gel-like consistency means that it’s easy to apply.Even better, it’s suitable for environmentally sensitive areas, as it does not contain solvent or paraffin and it’s biodegradable.If you choose to use Aquanett instead of sanding, you’ll then need to neutralise the decking with Net-Trol before applying your finish.Then, he applied AquadecksNo matter how many times we see photos of decking renovations using Aquadecks water-based penetrative wood finish, we’re always really impressed with how it turns out.First of all, Roger applied a liberal amount of Aquadecks. Applying in the direction of the grain, he worked in sections that he could complete within 30 minutes.As soon as the ‘wet look’ of the first application had disappeared, Roger applied a second coat. He then allowed this to penetrate for 15 minutes.He then removed any excess Aquadecks that hadn’t penetrated the decking. This avoids it drying as shiny spots on the surface. The place for Aquadecks is in the wood, not on the surface.As Aquadecks is water-based, Roger was then able to clean his tools with soap and water.We think that the decking now looks as good as new – if not better!

This beautiful two-tiered deck, installed by Beams & Braces, is the first use of the all new Trex Signature® Railing in Classic White - and it certainly makes for a striking effect.The inspiration:Darren of Beams and Braces was tasked with transforming a tired timber deck into something spectacular that would afford the homeowner more space and provide a safe and pleasant outdoor space for the family.The detail:Using Trex’s most popular decking colour, Island Mist – part of the Trex Transcend collection - to create the two-tiered deck and steps allowed Beams and Braces to create a highly-effective contrasting deck, with the brilliant white of the railings standing out against the subtle grey tones of the Trex boards.Unusually, the deck design used Trex Island Mist as the picture frame border too, with the detail of the frame picked out by arranging the decking boards at different angles in different zones. A central vertical board highlighted the property’s central post which supports a partial canopy over the top section of the deck, while on the steps Trex boards were arranged at a 45-degree angle to add visual interest.The property’s location on the Norfolk coast means that every part of the deck needs to be robust enough to stand up to the seaside weather, so the Beams and Braces team took care to ensure the subframe was well ventilated, and joists are taped and treated, with sealed cut ends, to ensure a professional finish.The full effect:The new deck not only doubled the size of the decking area, the low-maintenance nature of Trex decking means that it will look just as spectacular in the future as it does today. And the contrasting colours of the Classic White Trex Signature Railing and the Island Mist deck perfectly complement this seaside home.

Four of Toyota GB Plc Head Office fire exits open onto an outdoor decking area, leading to the Assembly points. Toyota contacted Watco looking for a long lasting anti slip decking solution.

New Era cradles were used to lay a level decking system on a roof terrace that had natural sloped drainage. We used UC4 treated external swedish softwood battens and composite decking to ensure long lasting and maintenance free-use.

Prepping decking with PrepdeckAfter cleaning their decking with bleach and removing any loose or flaking bits from the surface, our customer then used our professional stripper, Prepdeck to remove the old stain from their decking.Our customer applied Prepdeck in small areas that he could complete in 15-30 minutes, then, after leaving it to do its magic, used a stiff nylon brush to ‘lift’ the stain from the wood, ensuring that they worked in the direction of the grain.They then thoroughly rinsed the product off the decking using a garden hose – again, working in the direction of the grain.If you want to make this part of the job a little easier, you could opt for hot water instead.This is a great product, as it can also be diluted to make a powerful cleaner for weathered woods and can even be used on thermo (burnt) wood.Next neutralise with Net-trolThe customer then used our wood cleaner Net-trol to neutralise the surface of the decking, in preparation for the finish.After applying Net-Trol to the wet decking, they scrubbed the surface with a brush.They then left it to stand for around 15 minutes, keeping an eye on it to ensure that the surface of the decking didn’t dry.If it had begun to dry, he would have had to dampen it with a mist of water.They then scrubbed the decking again, this time whilst rinsing it.Now, it was just a matter of leaving the wood to dry for 48 hours before applying the finish.Choose a finish to protect your deckingThis customer opted for Aquadecks, our water-based penetrating finish. One of the great things about this product is that not only does it protect the wood from warping, splitting, cracking and UV damage, it is also easy to apply and maintain, as our highly penetrative formula guarantees there will be no peeling or flaking.Plus, it dries quickly and has a low odour, so you can be back on your decking with a glass of wine in hand, in no time at all.Our customer applied an initial coat of Aquadecks and allowed it to penetrate into the wood. Then, after around 15-20 minutes (when the ‘wet look’ of the first application had disappeared), they applied a second application and allowed this to penetrate.After a further 15 minutes, they brushed out any puddles so that the decking wouldn’t dry with shiny spots on the surface. Aquadeck’s place is in the wood, not on top of it!“Very pleased with all products purchased.”This customer was so delighted with our products, they got in touch to tell us how well everything had gone.“On advice gratefully received from Ken I had several stages to complete. Dura Deck FlipOver the past six years this Georgian property has been lovingly restored by Ciara and her husband Ben, including underpinning work to the foundations and a new roof.Journalist Ciara’s passion for the unique and creative really shone through in her design for her composite decking area. With a love for creamy based neutrals to complement the earthy red brick tones the house, she chose pretty Dura Deck Flip composite decking in the colour Weathered Cedar for the main decking area. UV resistance, scratch and stain resistant and with a Class C fire rating, it was installed on rot-free Dura Deck Aluminium pedestals and bearers for a low-maintenance ‘fit-and-forget’ decking solution.

The building was constructed using ICF blocks that are to have a rendered finish. Internally the ground floor is a concrete slab and the upper floor has timber posi-joists with the Lewis Deck and resilient strips laid above. 16mm underfloor heating pipes are then clipped into our new clip rail system with a free flowing screed then poured on top, 50mm thick. This then gives 20mm cover to the heating pipes, maximising the efficiency of the whole system.

We keep on being asked about how to lay our Lewis Deck system and the previous installation video wasn’t ideal when it came to showing how simple this was. So, in conjunction with the manufacturer of the deck we’ve had a series of new videos produced.

Delta were employed to assist on this leaking podium deck project. Following a full assessment of The Hub and its underground parking facilities it was identified that rainwater was entering the basement car park through the ceiling deck at multiple points. These points included holes that were formed to allow drainage from the surface, movement joints and investigation holes that had been created through the steel rib and concrete deck. Based on “as built plans” a system was designed post construction that would offer the same quality of structural protection had it been incorporated during the build phase.

Sadly, it’s all too common to see what was once a beautiful wooden decking, transform into a cold, dark and grey decking due to an inferior product being used to finish it.This customer’s decking was finished with a low quality oil which lasted only 3 months before turning their beautiful new deck into a sorry state of affairs.Luckily, our good friend Roger at R&A Pressure Washing Services (visit his website via the link at the bottom of this post) knew exactly what to do to restore this balau decking back to its former glory.So how exactly did Roger get this beautiful finished result?Striping the previous coatingBefore Roger could apply any finishing products, he first had to remove the previous coating that caused the damage in the first place.To do this, he used Prepdeck, our wood stripper specially designed for the removing of old solid and semi transparent stains from wood.Due to the balau decking being a tight grooved deck, he had to be sure to scrub the decking thoroughly. This is to be sure no previous coating would be left behind in between the grooves. A very important step when using Owatrol products as they need to penetrate into the surface. Products that sit on the surface of the wood will not give you long lasting results.Neutralising and brightening the woodAfter the wood has been thoroughly stripped and the previous coatings are a thing of the past, the wood then needs to be neutralised.To do this, Roger used Net-Trol, our powerful wood cleaner and brightener. This restores greyed and weathered wood to its natural colour without damaging the wood’s fibres.Net-Trol is fast acting and can restore the original colour of your wood surface in as little as 15 minutes.Applying the finish to the deckingFinally, Roger applied the customers chosen finish, Textrol.Textrol is available in 7 shades and the customer opted for Clear so they could fully appreciate the beautiful natural colour of the Balau wood. Roger applied 2 coats to get the desired finish.Textrol enhances the natural beauty of the wood whilst providing a mildew-resistant finish. This client had an untreated deck that had degraded due to UV exposure and needed it restored and finished. this was achieved by using Net-trol Wood Cleaner & Colour Restorer followed by D1 Pro Saturating Oil.Cleaning and preparing an IPE Deck for FinishingBefore using Net-Trol you need to ensure that your surface is cleared of debris – a good sweep should suffice.The surface then needs to be made wet and Net-Trol should then be scrubbed into the surface. We recommend using a stiff brush, then leave it to stand for approximately 20 minutes.Then it should be rinsed whilst scrubbing ,again with a stiff brush. Try to use the highest pressure water source you can (a pressure washer is ideal but a hose will suffice).Your surface then needs to be left for at least 48 hours to dry completely before applying your finish.Why use Owatrol’s D1 Pro?In this case, the client has chosen to finish their IPE deck with Owatrol’s D1 Pro, a product from our Professional Range which is a saturating wood oil for hardwoods giving a long-lasting natural finish and advanced UV protection.This product is well-suited for use in heavy-traffic areas such as decking and areas exposed to harsh weather. This is because it has a long-lasting finish that will protect in the years to come with minimal maintenance.It’s also perfect for dense, oily or greasy woods which are difficult to impregnate with saturating products. D1 Pro delivers excellent wood penetration and can protect even these more difficult woods from within.As such it was perfect for this project as it is made from IPE Decking which is an extremely hard wood decking (approximately 3 times harder than oak!).Many high street products would not have been able to provide adequate saturation in a wood as hard as this and therefore would not provide the long-lasting protection offered by D1 Pro.Finishing a deck with D1 ProOwatrol’s D1 Pro is a saturating wood oil protection. This means that its place is inside the wood not on top of it.To apply a saturating oil you need to apply ‘wet on wet’ coats. This means that the surface cannot be allowed to dry in between coats. If this was to happen then the D1 Pro that had been absorbed so far would start working and prevent any further moisture from penetrating the wood!This sounds a little scary but it really isn’t.The key is to work on small sections at a time (an area which can be completed in around 15 minutes). You need to apply the first coat and allow it to be absorbed for around 15-20 minutes but do not allow it to become surface dry.You then continue to apply coats until no more oil can be absorbed and the wood is saturated. At this point be sure to brush away any excess D1 Pro sitting on the surface to prevent shiny patches.Be sure to work along the length of your decking boards and always work an entire board at once. Never stop mid-board to prevent uneven coverage.Once this is completed you will have a deck protected for the long-haul with minimal maintenance required.Regular washing with Net-Trol is optional but will help to maintain the look of your deck. The look of the deck will gradually lighten over time; when it returns to a grey colour it is time for a maintenance coat. You apply it in exactly the same way but usually only 1-2 coats is necessary.You can also apply a maintenance coat in just a small localised area if that’s all that is necessary. No sanding or stripping required!The finished resultsAs you can see the results are stunning! The client can be safe in the knowledge that their deck is protected for years to come from damage caused by UV rays and moisture.On top of this, they know that they will need to do minimal maintenance. If the deck begins to look worn in high traffic areas, they’re able to carry out touch-ups easily.

The GRAD system can be retrofitted onto existing timber joists, installed from scratch on top of a new timber sub-frame, or mounted onto the bespoke rail system.

A good example of the before and after effects of laying a sedum roof garden and accompanying deck and paved area onto a small domestic roof terrace. All these products are designed to sit on top of the waterproof membrane (in this case single ply) there was no issue of damage to the roof. The support pads lifted the decking off the roof, eliminating the risk of the timber piercing the membrane, and drainage was maintained through the roof surface since the green roof system has a cavity beneath its own reservoir and drainage layer to allow water run-off.

Housing 360 staff it had to be practical. The clean lines of the Terrafina decking compliments the overall building facade and as with the VAG brand great design and good looks can still be achieved without compromising your budget.

100m2 flat roof on top of a school in was going to become an outside classroom. Access was severely restricted so it was not possible to consider traditional decking boards. Work was required at half term. Ipe timber decking tiles mounted onto adjustable pedestals were selected. The pedestals were delivered in boxes and the 500 x 500mm Ipe timber tiles could be carried by hand up all the flights of stairs to the roof area. The fall was accommodated with the adjustable pedestals and the hardwood decking was flat and durable. The roof was completed in three days.

Distributed by Vertex in Israel Accoya has been used for a swimming pool decking area and under water deck. Raised grain, splitting and rotting of wood is greatly reduced if not eliminated with Accoya compared to other woods. Accoya was coated in a Blanchon oil with the Accoya underwater left natural to go grey over time.

Mega Balance is the new adjustable height pedestal for paving and decking systems that does three jobs all in one. Firstly it achieves both the ultra heavy duty weight tolerance of the Wallbarn Megapad by tolerating over 2 tonnes per unit before breaking and having a self-levelling headpiece for smoother, more high end surface finishes. Secondly, it can become both a self-levelling or a fixed headed pedestal within the same unit by adding "the grey nut". By inserting and locking into place the grey nut into the centre of the headpiece, users can lock off the head to create a more rigid pedestal. Instead of having to order different pedestals to create these changes, both options are available in the same product. Thirdly, when paving, a brilliant new mechanism is provided to deal with rocking or moving slabs over time on paving areas. Slabs will often move over time for various reasons (structural movement, traffic etc.) and operatives have traditionally had to lift multiple slabs, adjust the height of the pedestals and then relay the slabs. Now, using "the yellow key" major labour saving and health & safety improvements are gained. Insert the yellow key into a small slot in the centre of the headpiece to turn the thread of the pedestal and adjust the height with the slab still in position.Mega Balance is available with a standard paving headpiece, a decking joist headpiece and a clip headpiece designed to hold Wallbarn's profiled aluminium rail. Added benefits include steeper, narrower weight bearing fins on the outside of the central column which means the bases can be cut back closer to that column for paving up tot he wall or parapet. A stronger, tidier finish on such details is achieved.Mega Balance offers much greater flexibility and scope for constructing suspended paving and decking schemes.

Terracing at an apartment complex in Birmingham has been restored to its former glory with Sadolin Classic. The elevated deck serves as a community hub and meeting place for residents from surrounding apartments in the Digbeth area. Its location, on the rooftop of a multi-storey carpark, leaves the terrace exposed to varying weather conditions and Optima Community Association - part of WM Housing Group – called on Crown Paints Specification Services to find a solution to preserve and protect the space.

Neaco’s aluminium decking has been specified for another landmark bridge project at Bécon-les-Bruyères train station which forms part of the extensive redevelopment of the Zac des Bruyeres Courbevoie in Paris. The striking new footbridge is the key feature of first phase of modernisation carried out by contractors, Groupe GCC. It now facilitates access to routes for travelers and allows residents the passage of Asnieres-sur-Seine at Courbevoie. Bécon-les-Bruyères is one of the busiest stations in the suburbs, with more than 20,000 passengers per day.

The extensive use of wood cladding & decking were key elements of LSI architects’ design. However, given that ‘The Haven’ is in a flood zone, surrounded on three sides by water & constantly exposed to a high moisture content in the air, LSI needed to find a wood that they could be confident would deliver durability, dimensional stability & aesthetics. The glue laminated Accoya wood for the curved rear screen was manufactured by Newnham & Abel Ltd & hand finished with a protective merbau-coloured coating from WoodGuard by Guard Industrie. The same finish was factory applied to the cladding.

neaco provided a bespoke modification to its Techdek aluminium decking system as part of a bridge specification at the Grand Canal Dock development project in Dublin. Using the renowned design versatility of the company’s technical team and state-of-the-art precision engineering facilities at its Malton factory, neaco developed a unique grille surface which features tactile strips to alert visually impaired pedestrians when they are nearing a step. Providing a high architectural aesthetic, Techdek is extremely versatile and can be used in many other applications, including staging, modesty screens, solar shading, maintenance galleries and roof access walkways.

This was a major refurbishment and landscaping project for an office development in the City of London. A podium deck had been re-waterproofed and the area landscaped, by contractor Scotscape, with a mixture of hard surfaces, grass lawns, planters and borders. Wallbarn has a very wide range of pedestals for a variety of applications. So we were able to supply exactly the right pad to best support the 6 x 2” joists the landscaping contractor needed to hold their decking boards. The timber joists were fixed into a frame and rigid insulation placed into the cavities between the beams.

Accoya has been selected as the ideal decking material for the Oosterdokseiland in Amsterdam. Designed by engineers IPV, Delft in the Netherlands, 300 metres of Accoya was used in total for the project. Each of the Accoya deck planks for the Jetty measured 145x35mm. The benches, (130x150mm) are also made of Accoya wood. After researching Oak and other wood species for the Jetty, De Boer and De Groot civil works chose Accoya due to its dimensional stability, long service life and sustainability credentials. The Accoya planks were screwed onto purlins which were then connected with anchors to the concrete floats.

Along with re-surfacing, inspection, showed signs of wear and tear on the bridge surface areas too. Consulting Engineers, Jacobs, approached IKO for the specification, and Galliford Try won the tender. BriggsAmasco were chosen as the installing contractor. IKO’s Permatrack Bridge Surfacing system was chosen - a waterproof mastic asphalt wearing course for Bridge Decks containing both polymer and epure (Trinidad Lake Asphalt) modifications to the bitumen binder, which offers improved material flexibility and maintains good rut resistance. Existing mastic asphalt surfacing and bridge deck waterproofing was stripped off and replaced with Stirling Lloyd’s eliminator waterproofing system and Permatrack.

Supplied by Kobel, in Italy Accoya was specified for the decking. The decking was wire brushed for a textured distressed looking finish and then laid around the swimming pool in the grounds of the residence. The client is pleased with the quality and overall finish of the decking and has the peace of mind that Accoya will be dimensionally stable, has outstanding durability and the added benefit of a guarantee of 50 years.

Twinson® decking was specified by David Walker Architects for the balconies. Due to the scale and high specification of the building, these qualities were vital to ensure that the apartments retain their high-end aesthetics for many years. “It was fantastic to see Twinson® decking used on this project,” said Hazel Verschuere, Building Products Director at Deeplas. “The aesthetics of Twinson® decking were ideal for creating a high-end finish to the apartment balconies. We are confident that residents and the building management team will benefit from the durability and low-maintenance of the decking.”

Deeplas Twinson commercial decking has been specified for the new Boundary Rooms Suite at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove, home of Sussex County Cricket Club. Wiltshire-based Specialist Structures chose Twinson decking principally because its natural timber appearance contrasted well with the anodised aluminium frames used on the doors and white architectural tensioned fabric roof. “We selected Twinson decking because its superior aesthetics complemented our design-lead SPACE building system,” said Keith Lewcock, Managing Director at Specialist Structures Ltd. “The decking creates a safe, low maintenance solution for the new suite, which has already received several positive comments from visitors.”

Thermography tests assessed the differences & compared the thermal gain of uncoated Accoya decking to thermally modified wood & wood plastic composites. Results showed Accoya is superior having a low thermal gain while the other materials attained significantly higher surface temperatures; the Accoya decking remained cool to touch despite being in direct sunlight on a day with an ambient temperature of 32 degrees. This particular Accoya decking benefit is very crucial to the visitors of the Thai resort & further contributing to the barefoot friendly credentials, Accoya decking’s surface remains smooth, resists splintering & grain raising, despite the high ambient temperatures.

UPM ProFi celebrates its 10 years journey as one of the leading European WPC decking producers. As part of the celebration we will revisit decks installed during the first years of UPM ProFi, 2007-2012.

The Big Chill, a bar in King’s Cross, was creating a public roof terrace on an existing structure. The deck was complicated with many changes of level and multiple objects present. A single ply membrane was installed. Paving and decking was required. Adjustable pedestals were laid directly onto the surface and their heights altered so that the upper surface of the 50mm paving slabs and the 125mm decking frame would be level. A complete rework of a postmodern office building (60 London Wall), situated in the heart of the City of London. Accoya® wood has been selected to provide decking for one of just twenty six gardens on display at Europe’s most renowned garden events the Chaumont-sur-Loire International Garden Show. The garden includes stone monoliths which represent the seven deadly sins and seven heavenly virtues connected by wooden decked paths, crafted from Accoya wood. There are also ‘see-saw’ structures of Accoya which connect different sides of the garden and which symbolise the need for balance in life.
