Damp Proofing The Iconic Tower Bridge

Newton Waterproofing Systems

Newton Specialist Contractors ASF Waterproofing were called in to investigate why the Bridge Master’s Quarters at No.1 Tower Bridge was suffering from damp and proceeded to install multiple Newton products to resolve the issue. At the world-famous Tower Bridge, landscaping contractor Maylim was commissioned by the City of London Corporation to investigate why the Bridge Master's Quarters at No.1 Tower Bridge was suffering from damp. After excavating, they discovered that the structure had no effective damp proofing protection. Newton Specialist Contractor ASF Waterproofing were commissioned to install new damp proofing measures to solve the issue.ASF Waterproofing approached the project in two phases, using multiple products to effectively damp proof both inside and outside the building. At the start of phase one, ASF correctly prepared and cleaned the internal wall surfaces before installing a new damp-proof course by injecting Newton 804-DPC into the walls at regular intervals, then sealing the holes with Newton 313-WP. The walls were then smoothed with a new internal render, ready for Newton 103-S to be quickly and easily sprayed to provide a final barrier to water. For phase two, the ASF team turned to the external walls of the structure, preparing and cleaning the surface before applying a new external render coat. The wall was then thoroughly waterproofed with four coats of the flexible, resilient Newton 109-LM. To ensure that the building was completely protected externally, the waterproofing began at 1 metre below ground level and extended all the way up to the existing windowsills. Thanks to their meticulous attention to detail and high standard of installation, ASF Waterproofing were able to provide both the contractor and the client with a high-quality and comprehensive damp proofing solution. As a result, the City of London Corporation can now hand over the building to the new lease holder, safe in the knowledge that it is well protected from damp.

Derriford Hospital Multi Storey Car Park

Berry Systems

Vehicle/Pedestrian safety barriers for the new 627 space, 6 storey car park at the Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.Like many hospitals, Derriford in Plymouth has to match ever-increasing numbers of patients, visitors and staff with limited parking availability. The new 627 space multi-storey car park on the North West Quadrant will go a long way towards easing the situation for the daily 8,000 footfall to the hospital. Part of a 6.6 hectare site being developed by Wharfside Regeneration for Plymouth Hospitals Trust, the new car park was designed by international architects S333 and built by Sir Robert McAlpine Limited. The eco-friendly design features green walls with climbing plants on the two lowest levels, steel latticework on the next two and timber latticework on levels 5 and 6. We recommended our RB1X Spring Steel Buffers that ‘give’ in a collision to absorb impact forces and minimise damage to the barrier, the vehicle and the car park deck that the barrier is mounted on. After an impact, the barrier returns to its original position to provide ongoing protection. Berry Beam rails were used to give a more refined  appearance than the traditional Armco ‘W’ section.A BS 6180 compliant pedestrian handrail was mounted above the barrier on post extensions of 1,100mm high and the space in between filled with anti-climb mesh to stop pedestrians from falling through, or even climbing over the barrier.

Spearheading an ambitious programme of regeneration, Canada Water Library resembles an inverted ‘ziggurat’ – a terraced pyramid of successively receding storeys – that partly overhangs the Canada Water basin. The £1.4m building sits at the edge of a civic plaza and a stretch of open water. The expanding pyramid form integrates a compact footprint at ground level with progressively wider floors above. The building is clad in light bronze anodised aluminium panels with sequined perforations, interspersed with recessed curtain wall screens. This design gives the project a sculptural appeal and a striking visual effect.Finished in bronze anodised aluminium, the structural sealant glazed facade and commercial doors were specified for the ground floor. A Visible Grid Facade has being used for the strips of curtain walling to the three upper floors, with top hung concealed vents and aluminiumdoors providing access to the balconies. The library forms part of the vibrant quayside at Canada Water - a historic Docklands that was once a bustling port. It was designed to exemplify the importance of the library, education and community facilities for local people and focus on the new phase of regeneration.

Zip Water

After 20 years in its Judd Street office in London’s Kings Cross, the Royal National Institute of Blind People recently moved to a new head office that better suited the charity’s evolving needs. The Grimaldi Building, a characterful self-contained office, serves as the charity's new London hub. Months of detailed planning and a thoughtful fit-out was required to ensure the new office facilities met the needs of all the RNIB employees and visitors. Understandably, accessible drinking water was a top priority."Zip HydroTaps have been used on a number of our projects and I have always found the team at Zip very willing to engage and explore a variety of user needs, which is really helpful – accessibility, clarity and ease of use is always a primary consideration for all our projects" Jean Hewitt, Inclusive Designer | Buro HappoldThe briefAn essential amenity in the workplace, the RNIB needed to provide staff, visitors and volunteers with easy access to both boiling and chilled drinking water, for hot and cold beverages. Integrated consulting engineers and advisers Buro Happold had their inclusive design expert Jean Hewitt on hand to support the RNIB with the Grimaldi building refurbishment, advising on accessibility. Her primary focus was ensuring that the building design considered those with sight loss and with this in mind, began her search for a drinking water system that was as inclusive as possible. The solutionOur HydroTap Accessibility range is designed specifically to support visually impaired, wheelchair and limited dexterity users. Jean chose to specify two HydroTap Accessibility models that provide instant filtered boiling and chilled drinking water. “I was attracted by the accessibility features, such as very clear colour coding and easy grip extended ‘ears’ for people who may have reduced dexterity and grip. The inclusion of tactile and Braille markings makes the use of the tap more intuitive for everyone,” explains Jean. The results"Zip HydroTaps have been used on a number of our projects and I have always found the team at Zip very willing to engage and explore a variety of user needs, which is really helpful – accessibility, clarity and ease of use is always a primary consideration for all our projects"Jean Hewitt , Inclusive DesignerBuro Happold

Emseal SJS System to Seal Ramp Joints at Trafford House Car Park, Old Trafford, Manchester

Emseal SJS System to Seal Ramp Joints at Trafford House Car Park, Old Trafford, Manchester

NCC – Emseal Movement Joints

Client: Bruntwood Estates Specialist Contractor: Grade-2 Structural Repairs Main Products Used: Emseal SJS SystemThis busy, multi-storey, prime location, car park is located between Manchester United’s Old Trafford Football Stadium, Lancashire’s Old Trafford Cricket Ground and Trafford House, a 12-Storey commercial development. The businesses use the car park during the week and then it is reserved for MUFC fans on matchdays and weekends. The car park was undergoing scheduled structural inspection, when it was discovered that the traditional compression joints were failing in the wide structural movement joints on the access ramps. This meant they were now leaking and allowing water ingress, which could lead to damaging salt deposits on expensive vehicles, as well as potential corrosion and damage to the reinforced concrete decks and the structural frame itself. These joints needed to be made watertight and accommodate significant horizontal and vertical movement, as well as traffic impact and weathering. The engineers looked for a solution that could safely repair and seal the joints, but with only minimal ramp closure or downtime, and the Emseal SJS System was selected as the ideal solution, as it could be installed in just two short, phased closures at weekends, when there were no home games. In the first weekend, with only one lane closed, the failed compression joint was removed and the joint arrisses made good with fast setting resin, then on the next weekend closure, the bespoke lengths of Emseal SJS were installed with access only required from above.

5 Things To Consider When Installing Hygiene Rooms In Schools

5 Things To Consider When Installing Hygiene Rooms In Schools

Astor Bannerman

In recent guidance from the Department for Education (DfE), specifically BB103 and BB104, it has been strongly recommended that both mainstream and Special Educational Needs (SEND) schools incorporate hygiene rooms as an essential component of their facilities to comply with regulations. This highlights the commitment to creating inclusive learning spaces that cater to the diverse needs of students. This guide shares five crucial insights for anyone embarking on the journey of creating hygiene rooms within educational institutions.One. Adhere To DfE Guidelines:Underscored is the importance of aligning with the Department for Education (DfE) guidelines, specifically BB104 and BB103. These guidelines set forth the standards necessary for designing hygiene rooms that cater comprehensively to the diverse needs of students with disabilities. We’ve briefly outlined the guidance below:BB103: “Area Guidelines for Mainstream Schools”:BB103 provides guidance on the space requirements and design considerations for various areas within mainstream schools. This includes classrooms, dining areas, toilet facilities, and more. The goal is to ensure that the physical environment supports effective teaching and learning, as well as the overall well-being of students.BB104: “Access to and Use of Buildings”:BB104 focuses on access to and use of buildings, specifically addressing issues related to accessibility for individuals with disabilities in SEND schools. This guideline outlines the standards for creating an inclusive and accessible built environment within educational facilities. It covers features to ensure that buildings are welcoming and usable by everyone. Most importantly BB103 & BB104 state that a hygiene room should be included in all school settings.Two. Ensure You Have Considered Full Room Hoist CoverageIt’s important to consider the mobility of students when planning for a hygiene room installation. We recommend the Astor OT200 Overhead Ceiling Track Hoist, this advanced hoist system offers full room coverage, ensuring secure and seamless transfers for students with mobility challenges. Improving the utilisation of space and the versatile enhancement of accessibility within hygiene rooms. Discover more about the Astor OT200 Overhead Ceiling Track Hoist here, including its X-Y track system to give access to all amenities and facilities, room-to-room transfer capabilities, considerations for door height/track system impact, and room height/depth of track.Three. Choose The Correct Changing TableIn schools, changing tables are essential for students with disabilities, offering a supportive and dignified space for changing routines. Tailored to various needs, these tables contribute to creating an inclusive environment, ensuring all students feel welcome and supported. When selecting a changing table for a school hygiene room, you’ll need to consider crucial factors. The key considerations when making your decision include:Wall Mounted / Mobile: Considerations include the available space, access and the number of carers needed.Height Adjustability: Protect your carers by insuring easy adjustment to the correct working height,Maximum Working Load: Ensure durability for daily use with a robust design.Size: Optimise functionality by considering the changing table’s size in relation to available space.Shower Tray Required?: Enhance hygiene with the option for a practical shower tray.Space / Need to Stow?: Maximise efficiency with a fold-away design for space-saving and easy stowing.Tilting Headrests: Improve user comfort with tilting headrests for a friendly changing experience.Explore the Astor CTX2-CP, with a water collection tray and drain hose which is ideal for showering and changing. The CP model comes with an emergency stop button which is perfect for multi-user environments such as Changing Places Toilets, schools and care environments.Four. Include A Height Adjustable Wash BasinInstalling a Height-adjustable wash basin will offer accessibility for students with a range of disabilities. Specially designed to cater to diverse needs, these basins ensure comfort and prolonged independence, fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment. This inclusive design not only enhances the overall functionality of these spaces but also emphasises a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that every child can navigate and utilise hygiene facilities with ease and dignity. We recommend the Astor ABW-CP Height Adjustable Wall Mounted Wash Basin featuring a spacious basin surround, it aids wheelchair users in transitioning from sitting to standing. Controlled effortlessly by a handheld device, the ABW-CP includes a large integrated mirror and an adjustable soap dispenser for added convenience.Five. Consider The Colour Scheme For Sensory Well-BeingWhen designing hygiene rooms in schools, you will need to consider a strategic colour contrast for enhanced sensory well-being. Instead of solely opting for calming colours, integrate high-contrast elements like light-coloured walls with dark or bright furnishings. This not only aids sensory wayfinding, particularly for children with autism, but also creates visually distinct zones within the space. Consider incorporating varied textures alongside the chosen colour palette to further enrich the sensory experience. By taking a thoughtful approach to colour contrast, hygiene rooms can become incredibly positive and inclusive spaces that support the well-being of all students. To ConcludeIn summary, this guide advocates for a comprehensive approach to inclusivity when installing hygiene rooms in schools. Prioritising adherence to guidelines, making innovative equipment choices, and adopting thoughtful design are central to creating educational spaces that address the diverse needs of students. With these insights, professionals can work towards seamlessly integrating inclusivity into the very fabric of educational environments. Our skilled team has many years of experience planning and installing equipment in public spaces like schools and universities. Please do get in touch if you need help or advice with your project or further support on the government requirements for equipment to support SEND students.

The building is directly connected to Heathrow’s Terminal 4 via an air bridge and also offers convenient access to the London Underground, Heathrow Express train service and nearby major motorway routes. We were instructed to supply and install more than 600 metres of balustrades, as well as over 300 metres of wall fixed handrails during the hotel’s construction phase. The balustrades used for the project were 1.5kn structural glass balustrades to bridges and 0.74kN loading stainless steel with glass balustrade to stairs. We provided approximately 300 metres of structural glass balustrades to the hotel’s link bridges. At the design stage of the project, we were advised that the bridges could deflect by 25mm, so our balustrade design had to accommodate this. The solution was simple but very effective – we left a 5mm gap in between each five-metre length of track, which was not noticeable when walking along the bridges but allowed for adequate movement in the structure with no damage to the balustrades or the finishes, and no compromise to the overall look. In addition, we adapted our handrail system to provide protection to the walls where guests wheel trollies and luggage into the hotel. By fixing handrails along the flooring close to the walls, it provided a functional yet attractive solution to avoid any marks or scratches that luggage might create. The overall result was a mix of balustrades to the hotel’s stairs and link bridges, plus handrail finishes to the high-traffic areas of the premises that all fit in with the building’s modern and clean design.
