BACKGROUNDT-Squared were selected by Oxford Nanopore Technologies as Main Contractor for their new cleanroom production facility on the prestigious Harwell Campus. The production cleanrooms had to be ultra-clean to manufacture DNA/RNA sequencing devices.BRIEFThe production cleanrooms for the sequencing devices required ISO 4 & 7 Classifications and had to meet the stringent requirements for their specialist manufacturing process which are aligned with semiconductor processing. Due to the high level of process services required and strict operating conditions, the cleanroom had to support the specialist services and HVAC solutions to meet the critical operating parameters and production processes.SOLUTIONMIDDAS designed, manufactured, and installed structural cleanrooms from their proven M100/M200 range and specialist M-WOC walk-on ceiling with plenum cap. The M100/M200 framework was engineered to support the sensible cooling coils and HVAC supplies, along with the process utilities used within the facility. The cleanroom wall panels could also be removed to access the services throughout the life of the facility and had inert aluminium cores to ensure the cleanroom classifications were met. A unique feature of the MIDDAS solution was the plenum cap, designed and engineered to support the fan filter ceiling below. Integrated handrails to the walk-on ceilings also ensured a safe maintenance platform.

The Carrasco international Airport is the largest airport in Uruguay serving the capital city Montevideo. Designed by Urugayen architect Rafael Viñoly, the new terminal has the capacity to handle more than 4.5 milion passengers a year. Barrisol® covers 16 000 sqm of ceilings in this international travel and commercial destination.

Naylor Lintels were supplied to the winning project of the Supreme Award at the Brick Awards 2015 The Whitworth Art Gallery. The judges comments were - Extraordinary architectural quality both in its internal and external spatial arrangements, attention to detail and workmanship. The proportions of the external spaces are immensely effective and give a calmness and richness. The relationship to its surroundings is clear in the historic Whitworth building and its landscape setting, park and new courtyards. This building has tremendous architectural quality and its use of brick as an ornamental narrative device as well as a robust skin is exceptional.

Heathrow Airport is the UK’s largest and busiest airport connecting the UK to over 80 long haul destinations and flying over 80 million passengers worldwide. Project/doors: Hart has over installed over 280 doors across all terminals including high speed smoke screens, fire conveyor shutters, security shutters, internal and external high speed doors, insulated fast action doors, sectional doors and pedestrian doors.The challenge Terminal 5 baggage handling system serves around 32 million passengers per year and handles around 6000 bags per hour.  Hart were asked to design, manufacture and install a specialist and unique automatic smoke screen system capable of handling over 6000 bags per hour, while providing a seal for 30 minutes in the event of fire. The solution Hart were the only company to provide a solution that fully met all the design requirements. Two years after the initial talks with the client, Hart successfully completed the manufacture and installation of all of the high speed smoke/fire screens within the main check in area, comprising 102 check in desks. Hart also installed a mixed package of roller shutter and fire doors in the lower ground service area and fire shutters on the Tube access tunnels leading directly to Terminal 5. The success Hart was chosen for the quality of engineering and the ability to meet the clients demanding specification and operating requirements. Hart continues to work with contractors and OEM’s such as Vanderlande, Mace and Balfour Beatty on site supplying upgrades and new doors when required

Valencia Airport is located in Manises, 8 km west of Valencia, in Spain. In time for the America's Cup in 2007, this international airport was modernized and expanded, and received, among other new features, a new terminal building.Again, the tried-and-tested record FlipFlow TWIN models are installed here, smoothly controlling the flow of passengers and preventing unauthorized access to the restricted zones.

Handling over five million passengers a year, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the UK’s busiest airports. Last year Twinfix worked with Principal Contractor Technical Construction Group Limited on a £750,000 project to design, manufacture and install a new covered walkway at the airport from the terminal building past stands 51 to 53 on the airside apron.

ACE solution for the decoupling of production machines ensures calm in chocolate production by reducing low-frequency vibrations to a minimumAt a renowned Belgian chocolatier, part of the production process led to vibration and oscillation in an adjacent house. Despite numerous tests, the manufacturer was unable to find a solution that could isolate vibrations below 20 Hz, until they came across ACE products. The PLM pneumatic levelling elements from the ACEolator range from ACE offer significant insulation from a frequency of 5 Hz and up. Now 14 PLM-3’s installed in the facility are reducing vibrations by 80 percent. Any remaining vibration can only be detected with measuring devices.

Manchester Museum has opened a new gallery dedicated to South Asian culture where Junckers’ solid wood flooring forms an integral part of the interior scheme. The new gallery celebrates the lived experiences and contributions of the South Asian diaspora and is part of the Hello Future initiative, a Heritage Lottery Fund project to encourage diverse communities to visit the museum. Architects Purcell created a new two-storey extension which includes two new galleries, as well as re-designing the original buildings to add a new main entrance, foyer, and visitor facilities. The new building has achieved BREEAM Very Good standard and was designed to adhere to the conditions required for museum collections. The design also places a strong focus on inclusivity, with improved accessibility for all visitors. The interior, designed by Studio C102 and Mobile Studio Architects, takes its inspiration from South Asian architecture and design with a material palette of rich colours and textures. Junckers Oak Natural Pearl flooring is paired with hand-patinated brass panels and a deep ochre wall colour that brings South Asian culture and creativity to life, a fitting backdrop to the many interesting exhibits on display. Junckers’ oak flooring provides the museum with a durable surface to accommodate high foot traffic. Made in solid wood, the floor is easy to care for and maintain and with a proven long lifespan, the floor can easily outlast the building’s design life of 60 years. Junckers flooring contributes to a healthy indoor climate and helps minimise any static from electrical devices and equipment. Having undergone rigorous degassing and odour tests to ensure there are no chemical substances in the flooring which adversely affect the air quality in a room, all Junckers floors carry the Danish Indoor Climate label certificate. The South Asia Gallery is a British Museum partnership.

The proven, durable properties of Sika’s high-quality waterproofing system were required to ensure the successful upgrade of one of the UK’s busiest rail terminals.The multi-million pound refurbishment of London Bridge station – which brings an estimated 56 million passengers into the city each year represents a huge undertaking by Network Rail to create new connections and increase peak hour services by 30%. The project is part of the government-sponsored Thameslink Programme.

During the regeneration of the new Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport, Vetter UK, the specialist contracting arm of Laing O’Rourke needed to specify a fast-drying 135mm deep screed so that the project could continue with minimum disruption, saving time and costs. RonaScreed FastDry Prompt was specified for its fast-drying properties and the fact that it could be mixed at ground level and then pumped up the three storeys to the point of application, saving on time and cost.

The 10,488 m² distribution warehouse required frost protection with design parameters of -5°c external and +10°c internal.SolutionJust one TEG41 air rotation heater was installed by our trusted partners RSY Air Conditioning. This TEG41 heater was designed to deliver an impressive 420kW of heat output. The TEG41 heater uses high volume, low velocity, air-circulation to distribute conditioned air to large open space and is the perfect solution for any distribution warehouse heating requirements. Due to the customers requirement to maximise the amount of racking within the warehouse area the distance of the unit from racking was much less than would be usually recommend (it was under 2mtrs from face of heater to face of full height racking).ResultThe newly styled Powrmatic Air rotation units in our new RAL 7015 colour were installed by RSY Air Conditioning. The unit was redesigned at the top of the unit to be top exit rather than the conventional design. The theory behind this was to direct the leaving air towards the roof and use the internal profile of the roof to aid with stratifying the air across the building length. The racked distribution warehouse will now benefit from a frost protection system which will protect the internal sprinkler system from freezing in the colder months.

North west installers Fire Queen Limited combined a state of the art Advanced Go fire panel with cutting edge wireless devices from Hyfire to protect artwork at The Art of Banksy exhibition, housed in a temporary venue at Media City, Manchester.The Fire Queen team were given just one week’s notice to survey, specify and install a BS5839-1-2017-compliant fire system to protect the exhibition, which housed a range of the mystery street artist’s most iconic works. Using a combination of the Advanced Go Quick Edit tool and the Hyfire Taurus app, combined with active support from the teams at both brands, it was possible to deliver a system in record time that met all the requirements of the event organisers and their insurers.

Fire and security service providers, Securecom Claddagh Ltd, carried out the replacement and upgrade of an ageing fire alarm system, installing a Go panel in each of the three-storey apartment blocks.A Go panel was installed near the front door of each building, covering their hallways and landlord areas. The panels were hard-wire integrated with Apollo detectors and with a CSL fire-specific remote monitoring communication device that communicates to an alarm receiving centre, allowing the relevant key holders to be informed when triggered.Securecom Claddagh has been using Advanced fire panels for a number of years in its projects due to their ease of programming and standardisation across sites, as well as the panels allowing effective technical phone support from Advanced in the event of a fault or unwanted alarm.

BLÜCHER recently supplied our BLÜCHER EuroPipe system to the new Terminal 2 car park at Manchester Airport. The new multi-story car park has space for 3,800 vehicles and is part of the £1 billion transformation programme at the airport. The installation was overseen by G Beverley & Son on behalf of the M&E Contractor, Crown House. Our stainless steel drainage systems are the ideal choice due to our lightweight push-fit pipes and fittings are easy to handle and install, and provide rapid discharge of rainwater and waste water.

Liverpool Street station first opened in 1874 and by 1895 it had the largest number of platforms than any other terminal railway station in London. Liverpool Street is one of the busiest railway stations in London, serving as the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport and other trains serving East London and destinations in the East of England. Not forgetting the integration of London Underground lines; Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines.

As part of a framework agreement between Gatwick Airport and Galliford Try, Bourne Parking were appointed to design and build an above ground scope of works for the over decking of Gatwick South terminal’s long stay parking Zones F and G. The single suspended deck car park provides an additional 1,224 car parking spaces and was built to assist with achieving Gatwick’s objective of passenger growth. The project is Shield’s largest and fastest single deck car asphalting project to date, with 26,000m² completed in nine weeks.

Bonny LGA on the Atlantic coast of Nigeria, where the huge multi-billion dollar Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) industry and the terminals of several oil and gas companies, (including ExxonMobil - trading in Nigeria as Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU), are established. HAG supplied and installed Armourguard & Alishiled Range roller shutters to numerous locations in the Niger delta to enhance the security of the Shell premises. HAG also trained local representatives of the main contractor to enable them to install HAG products on a supply only basis.

Located between St. David's and Aberdour, the tanker terminal at Braefoot Bay is a base for the export of liquefied petroleum gas. The terminal consists of two jetties located on the north shore of Incholm Island. The gas is piped to the Mossmoran Plant in Fife direct from the North Sea, broken down to form ethane and then converted into ethylene, the basic hydrocarbon 'building block' of the petrochemical industry. The products are then piped the final three mile journey to the Braefoot Marine Terminal where they are fed into tankers and gas carriers for markets in Europe and the USA. The terminal is operated jointly by Shell Expro and Exxon.The jetty was suffering from increasing levels of deterioration of the reinforced concrete structure due to the relentless corrosive action of the marine salt environment on the reinforcing steel. A remedial plan was developed to carry out repairs and to introduce a cathodic protection (CP) system to greatly enhance the protection level and therefore extend the life of the structure. The plan was prepared by structural engineers from Shell, led by Hans Verheyde, and Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK (BBCS) was awarded the contract.Two major factors had to be accommodated within the repair programme. Firstly, the tidal flow that submerged the lower part of the jetty twice every 24 hours and secondly, the jetty is a fully live and very active transport hub and shipping schedules had to take precedence at all times. Round-the-clock flexible working maintained delivery of the twelve-month project.Saint-Gobain Weber's specialised repair concrete products were specified for the remedial actions on the Braefoot Bay jetty and technical application advice was provided for the active phase of the project. A suspended scaffold was designed and installed which allowed fast access when the tide ebbed so that productivity could be maintained. Traditional techniques were used to breakout the spalled and cracked concrete and to wash out the surface chlorides and clean the existing reinforcement steels.webercem five star repair concrete CP is a shrinkage-compensated, high strength, low resistivity, flowing repair concrete designed for use in conjunction with CP systems. This pre-blended cementitious concrete fully complies with the Highways Agency Specification Class 29F for high-strength flowing concrete for major structural repairs. It contains non-reactive aggregates with a low soluble-alkali cement content which is particularly important where CP is to be used. The rapid strength development and dimensional stability of webercem five star repair concrete CP – which reaches 27N/mm² in 24 hours – was especially valuable in the tidal conditions in Fife. Tight shuttering was used on the wide beam sections of the jetty to take the poured concrete which reached an integral bond with the original concrete. This process reformed the structural integrity using products with proven durability.An innovative CP system using Duogard® hybrid anodes from CPT was installed to protect the steel reinforcement with the anodes fixed into the soffits with a special CPT mortar. Where the CP installation required chases to carry the cabling, webercem HB40 high-build structural repair mortar was used to fill and seal the chases. webercem bondcoat, a polymer-modified, cementitious bonding aid and steel reinforcement primer, was first applied into the chases to ensure enhanced bonding. webercem HB40 is an acrylic-polymer modified, single component mortar and is lightweight with high build qualities. It can be applied in layers up to 75mm thick vertically, and 50mm on overhead soffits, and can be used without formwork. It was then applied onto the tacky webercem bondcoat primer and finished flush to the concrete surface.The Braefoot Bay terminal project has been completed successfully and Dewi Miller, contracts manager, BBCS, is confident that the jetty protection will extend the working life of the structure. "The products we have used are excellent and the application methods have enabled us to deliver a high degree of protection and reinstatement to the concrete structure. Working on a live site in a tidal zone has required a flexible work schedule but the whole project has worked exactly to plan and the client is very pleased with the result. The Weber materials have been the key to achieving this success."

When the Gatwick consortium began renovation on the South terminal of Gatwick Airport they needed to ensure that the new floors were protected against movement of the daily traffic that they endure. Genesis provided a solution; working with the architects and installation contractors a cost effective Stainless Steel Movement Joint was selected from the Genesis range. Renovations been part of an £850million investment to see the replacement of floors and ceilings and enhance the experience travellers receive; Genesis movement Joint meets and exceeds all standards of Movement Joints and will save the floors from cracking long into the future.

In July 1960 the SAS Royal Hotel opened in Copenhagen as the world’s first design hotel. Now known as the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, it was the embodiment of Arne Jacobsen’s whole-picture approach to architecture and design.Jacobsen received the brief in 1955 from Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) to build the first hotel of its kind and set Copenhagen up as the Nordic gateway for the new tourists travelling from America. The hotel was to act as a terminal in the city centre, with guests whisked direct from its cocktail lounge to Kastrup Airport in a mere 20 minutes.

The Ascent Up and Over step unit / Industrial stair system was specified to create a safe means of access up & over items of mechanical plant & equipment to the roof of the airport terminal building. The Industrial stair unit is supported on rubber spreader feet which provide a non-penetrative support solution on the flat single ply membrane roof. The stair unit is designed in accordance with BS EN ISO 14122-1:2001 + A1:2010 and Building Reg Part K:2013 and manufactured following 1090 factory production control procedures.

The frontage of the Ocean Terminal shopping centre in Edinburgh has received a radical makeover as part of a major investment to increase footfall by enhancing the visitor experience. The extension has been covered with STEREO-KINETIC cladding; hundreds of freely-moving stainless steel sheets suspended from grating panels. Gusts of wind, traffic, even people walking by cause the metal rectangles to ripple in an ever-changing display. The kinetic artwork has been designed in such a way as to allow the passage of natural daylight through the underlying window openings on the second floor level.

For one of the world’s largest self-service bag drop zone in Gatwick North Terminal SAS designed a bespoke, hand-formed 45° angle bulkhead to surround the SAS200 islands. Presenting a clean finish, the 'knife-edge' feature provides a precision-engineered and dramatic aesthetic. This architectural metalwork solution frames the ceiling islands and stands out against the dark grey ceiling. SAS600 rafts were specified over walkways to guide visitors from the entrance to the main check-in area. This design aesthetic and the ease of integration with signs fulfilled the client brief to improve airport ‘wayfinding’.

DRU has installed 89 gas fires into Ebury Square, a development of luxury 1-4 bedroom apartments and 5 bedroom penthouses by Berkeley Homes in Belgravia, London. The fires were selected for their contemporary design, easy installation and high energy efficiency. They consist of single-sided and double-sided tunnel models. Berkeley Homes selected DRU because of their unique PowerVent® flue system. Due to the configuration of the apartments, the flues had to be extended up to 64 metres throughout the service ducts in the complex, with most of the fires having external PowerVent® terminals on the roof.

The construction of a new pig unit has enabled Anthony Robinson to build on the early success of his new pig finishing business. Profile 6 roofing sheets were used on the build to help with insulation and reduce the high levels of condensation to ensure optimum pig performance, and help reduce the build-up of dust and air-borne bacteria. As such, a raised, protected open ridge has been installed on the build to help draw in fresh air from the sides of the shed, forcing stale air up and out through the top of the building.
