Lochrin Bain’s Combi™ Palisade was the product of choice for Capita’s Landscape Architects working on their recent Waterfront Business Park project. With concerns raised by local Crime Prevention Officers over security breaches using traditional front fix Palisade, the proposed Secured By Design Combi system, installed on neighboring properties for a number of years ticked all the right boxes.

There was a clear requirement for the paving to provide Southwater One with a physical and symbolic link between the bold, unapologetically modernist external appearance of the development and its natural surroundings. The Siena (Hague Cream) pavers addressed that specification; the warm, sandy, tones blending with the surrounding natural landscape. In addition, the use of Wienerberger’s Mastiek and Auraton pavers, with their clean grey finishes, created a crisp waterfront patina.

With beautiful views of the Belvoir Valley, the client wanted a contemporary architectural piece that would integrate comfortably with its surrounding landscape whilst maintaining a natural yet modern 21st century aesthetic.Sustainability was at the forefront of the client’s brief, who wanted a recycled material for the external cladding that would accommodate the robust, maintenance-free and high quality requirements of the build. With the sensitive and vast wildlife of its surrounding landscape in mind, the property needed to be natural, both in terms of its aesthetic and its components, embodying an effective fusion of sustainability and simplicity.The SolutionBuilt to embrace the panoramic views, this two-floored structure is fuelled by the natural light of its landscape with its beautiful vast windows and balconies. A new world-class entertainment centre in Aberdeen, featuring hard landscaping products from AG, is set to be the envy of cities across Europe! Named P&J Live, the state-of-the-art event complex opened in September 2019 and is the largest new entertainment complex in Europe.Boasting 48,000 sqm of flexible event space, world-class conference and exhibition facilities plus a superior 15,000 capacity arena, the £333 million landmark project also includes two hotels – the Hilton and the Aloft.The project was a joint venture between Aberdeen City Council, Henry Boot Developments (HBD) and Robertson, who were the main contractors on the project.AG’s Head of Specification & Commercial Sales (Northern Region), David Speirs commented:“It was the largest ever project for both firms and we were thrilled to have been awarded the contract to supply AG products on such a high-status development.It was a major win for AG. IDPartnership Specifies Tobermore Paving at £20m Student Village in NewcastleArchitect, IDPartnership, was seeking a hard landscaping solution for Portland Green, a new £20 million student village in Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, that would be attractive yet functional. Tobermore provided the architect with the perfect solution with the supply of striking Sienna, modern Fusion and smooth Shannon block paving products.The project was managed by Metnor Group and is hoped to breathe new life into the area and boost trade for local restaurants, bars and retail outlets.The first phase, consisting of a 274 bedroom luxury student accommodation building and 2 retail units, was completed in 2013 and the second phase, consisting of a 338 bedroom accommodation building and 4,500 sq. ft. of retail space, was completed in late 2015.David Moore, Senior Associate at IDPartnership, explained that the objective for the outdoor space at the student accommodation complex was to “provide quality hard landscaping around the building and in the centrally located courtyard at a reasonable cost.“We decided that block paving was the most suitable solution as it was in fitting with other paved projects we had designed nearby.“The landscape design concept was to define different areas and routes on campus that could also provide a colourful contrast to the dark brick apartment buildings.”David Moore, Senior Associate at IDPartnershipThe architect liaised with Tobermore’s North East Sales team in a bid to achieve a landscape with aesthetic appeal and sustainability. David said:“What impressed us most about Tobermore was the range of products, the beautiful colours available, and the cost-effectiveness.”A selection of Tobermore’s Sienna block paving in the colours of Graphite and Silver, and Fusion block paving in the colours of Cream, Silver and Graphite was specified for the area surrounding the project.Sienna and Fusion are manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a sparkling, modern look, similar to natural granite. Sienna is available in single sizes and duo sizes while Fusion is a modular sized product.IDPartnership also selected Tobermore’s smooth Shannon block paving in the vibrant, blended colour of Heather. Shannon was installed within the courtyard area and has enhanced the beauty of the complex and provided a stylish outdoor space for residents to unwind in.Fusion Kerb in a striking granite aggregate finish was chosen as the appropriate kerbing solution to complement the paving products used across the site.On reflection of the completion of phase two of this project, David Moore said, “I’m very happy with the products supplied by Tobermore, so much so, that we are already using more products on the next two phases.“We would recommend Tobermore for any type of project.”

With more evidence emerging to suggest our surroundings are highly influential when it comes to feeling motivated and inspired, universities and other learning institutes are now placing more of a focus on the look, feel and materials used within their environments than ever before. Therefore, the architects Evans Vettori Architects decided to choose Wienerberger’s Rosa Waterstruck WF clay pavers to complement the landscaping of the site works.

Hudson Quarter is a prestigious, multi-award-winning, mixed-use development of 127 apartments and 9,570m2 of Grade A office space. The apartments are housed within three residential buildings with one office building based around a central courtyard. The sustainable project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating upon completion.  The site, previously an existing 1960’s office building is based in a highly sensitive location within the ancient city walls of York. Sensitively designed to sit comfortably within its historic setting, Hudson Quarter has been created respecting its past whilst embracing 21st century working and living.  A dedicated parking area was incorporated into the design, available for both office staff and residents. Tobermore worked closely with the design team to ensure appropriate hard landscaping was chosen for the large car park adjacent to Hudson Quarter.  Tobermore’s Artro block paving was perfect for Hudson Quarter as it can withstand significant trafficking and its clay-like look adds a heritage feel with a modern twist to the hard landscaping. The herringbone laying pattern was specified, not only for appearance, but also because of its trafficability. 

After almost 30 years, Bellway Homes has relocated to a new purpose-built headquarter office building. Based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the company have settled into the newly formed energy- efficient Airview Park adjacent to Newcastle Airport.  The company were previously based in a small, listed property with cellular offices that were no longer fit for purpose. With light and spacious open-plan office space, the move was the perfect opportunity to support the company’s growth.  The facility houses 100 staff members and include high-spec welfare facilities including a gym, breakout room and a roof terrace. The state-of-the-art office space also features a new training hub providing educational facilities for Bellway Academy. Benefitting from a rich landscape setting, the overall design concept was to create a ‘Pavilion in a Park’. With this in mind, the external design was equally as important as the building itself. Various Tobermore block paving and permeable paving products were used. The hard landscaping featured Tobermore’s award winning paving product Braemar. The premium product fulfilled both aesthetic and design aspirations. 

THE BRIEFDigital skills centre landscaped courtyard at Cirencester CollegeLangley Design worked with E G Carter & Co on the new £4 million digital skills centre at Cirencester College and we were pleased to be able to offer our services on this local project. There was a requirement here for some curved timber seating for the newly landscaped courtyard areas. WHAT WE DIDPremium seating facilities for studentsWe manufactured and installed our Sheldon benches SBN307 in Class 4 Treated Redwood timber with a Dark Oak stain to give a more premium finish. The client opted for the more stylish flat legs for the benches which were powder coated to RAL8040 to tie in with the building façade. We also supplied our smaller Sheldon Cube SBN316 to provide individual seating facilities for the students. THE RESULTAn ongoing relationship with the collegeThe college were really pleased with our products and approached us directly a few months later to provide some picnic tables and benches to their roof terrace for the staff to enjoy the outdoors during breaktimes.The same material was chosen for these products to ensure consistency across the site.

Stately Home, Hestercombe House, has unveiled the first milestone in an extensive 18-month project, which will see 15 rooms in the 320-acre estate being redecorated.Thanks to specialist redecoration services and expert colour insights from Crown Paints, the interior of the Portman and Jekyll rooms now reflects the estate’s luscious 50-acre Georgian landscape garden, blending the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

This extravagant garden was designed by Adolfo Harrison (Landscaping work carried out by Town & Country Gardens), featuring our La Roche Luna acid-etched limestone, bespoke steps, and pool copings. Our La Roche Luna is a dark, earthy limestone with fossil and highlight detailing, giving the stone a gentle character. It is a dense, durable, and hard-wearing material, with versatility for both interior and exterior uses.

TPM Landscape, Manchester were appointed to design an enclosed courtyard space and two roof terraces for a new student residential development in Paul Street, Shoreditch, London. The courtyard is designed to offer an attractive and engaging outdoor environment for students to enjoy during the day and at night time. The roof terraces incorporate movable furniture to create flexible spaces, allowing students to enjoy views over the London skyline.

Fitzroy Place is a regeneration of the former Middlesex Hospital, making a collection of beautiful homes arranged around a stunning landscaped square in the heart of Fitzrovia, a prime area which has long been one of central London’s most cherished neighbourhoods.InterLace designed, manufactured and installed roller blinds to more than 230 luxury apartments along with specialist electric blinds and curtain tracks to the four exclusive penthouses atop the development.

Situated in the rolling hills of Devon in the quaint and historic town of Totnes, Quayside Extra Care is a flagship scheme for dementia friendly facilities. The impressive development by the Guinness Partnership emphasises comfort, safety and enjoyment for their residents which is certainly reflected by its many communal facilities. The development, on top of the 60 high quality Extra Care apartments, contains a bistro, a modern café, a landscaped garden, an activity area and a ‘pamper suite’. 

A Stannah Midilift SL vertical platform lift has secured comfortable access throughout a 2-storey, 5-bedroom, detached designer house in leafy Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Bringing easy movement between the ground-floor living area and the lower-ground-floor bedrooms, the Midilift SL is the ideal domestic lift and maintains a discreet, complementary presence in this spacious, two-level designer home, nestling in landscaped grounds.

The Analog Devices Building at the University of Limerick was constructed as part of the ground-breaking Bernal Project and was since awarded the Irish Building Project of the Year at the Irish Building and Design Awards 2016 in Dublin. Irish architect, Brady Shipman Martin, was appointed to design the external landscape and Tobermore helped make their job easier with the provision of an attractive paving solution that complemented the distinctive new building whilst providing continuity with the other areas on campus.

Junnell Homes Ltd developed Salterns Reach, a luxurious housing scheme in West Sussex. The hard landscaping was hugely important as the developer was seeking products that would blend with the distinct style of the project whilst offering functional benefits.Tobermore provided Junnell Homes with Hydropave Tegula Duo and Hydropave Tegula 240 permeable paving. These products met the project requirements perfectly, offering traditional aesthetics and also serving as a SuDS function.

Wilmcote House is located in Portsmouth which had undergone a major renovation to benefit the health and well-being of tenants.A high-rise, high-density housing estate that remains a prominent feature of Britain's urban landscape dating from the 1960's.Wilmcote House used a combination of several products and systems namely ROCKWOOL external wall and flat roof insulation together with a selection of the company's firestopping and fire protection products.

The Challenge Modern paving was required for community-based retail developmentSuperValu invested €12m in a 15,200 square foot store in Dunboyne, Co Meath. The location of the retail development has great significance to the local community, having previously served as the local GAA grounds.  Extending its current product offering, the new scheme also aims to become a local community hub. The design champions a community ethos with the inclusion of a large open outdoor space. The open plan space offers flexibility for market stalls or event structures. The new development has incorporated four adjacent units, office accommodation and a café. The new state-of-the-art retail hub required high quality paving that would complement the grey brick and granite cladding of the building. The main entrance and pedestrian walkways needed to fulfil the hard landscape design aspirations.  The Solution Tobermore’s Fusion and Manhattan perfectly complement the retail hub  Tobermore presented hard landscaping options to complement the new state-of-the-art retail development. Fusion and Manhattan block paving were the perfect choice to blend with the grey brick and granite cladding building.  Laid in alternating bands, the striking granite aggregate finish of the paving responds to the staggered elevations of the building. Linear paver Manhattan was used for areas of the main walkways in mixed sizes with smaller units of Fusion laid either side. The three-colour mix of grey tones in a stretcher bond laying pattern adds character and visual appeal to the central plaza.  The grey tones do not follow a particular sequence and the linear bands do not adhere to fixed widths. The intention was to achieve a certain randomness that feels natural and softens contrast. The range of unit sizes and colours of Fusion and Manhattan helped create this vision.  Tobermore’s Fusion kerb added the finishing touch to the project with its striking granite aesthetic as a border surrounding the soft landscaping in the central plaza.   

During the autumn of 2023, we installed this beautiful, natural themed new play area at St Martin’s, Jersey. This project saw a collaborative design approach with a local playground expert on the island, who helped select the equipment, surfacing, and shape the landscaping elements of the works.The centrepiece item was a modified version of the ever popular Lappset Spell Hill, where a set of monkey bars, fireman’s pole, and a different specification slide were added to the original design, to increase the play value and age ranges of who can use the equipment.Two new sets of swings, a seesaw, two spring riders, and musical play panels ensured a well balanced playground that appeals to all ages and abilities. Making the park inclusive for all, no matter their physical abilities, was an important consideration when designing the area, and the large, upright basket swing and sensory attributes of the musical chimes, together with the tasteful landscaping created a welcoming environment for all.The surfacing chosen was mix of green and beige wet pour rubber, ensuring the natural theme carried through to all elements of the design.We loved working on this project, and it was great to shape the design with the input of local people on the island. The award winning new Vijay Patel building is the bold centerpiece of DMU’s £136million campus transformation project. The tower houses all of the university’s art and design faculties under one roof – so it’s only fitting that the surrounding landscaping should reflect the creative nature of the students using it.The project was made up of three main areas which had multi-uses – the Arts Tower development, the Design Wing and the Food Court. Other changes include open parkland along Mill Lane leading to the edge of the River Soar, creating a new gateway connecting the city’s West End to the city centre. One of the main advantages of the new campus is that it brings all the different areas, under one roof, making it a lot more accessible and convenient for the for the students.Designer Plincke Manchester blended a range of Marshalls paving products to create different textures within the landscape, which help to delineate multi-use spaces.Different sizes of the new Modal paving, part of the internationally recognised La Linia range have been juxtaposed, with long flag units used to complement the lines of the central tower and smaller Conservation X Setts to designate walkways.

Heathy Wood lies on the Surrey and West Sussex border, offering 134 two to four-bedroom houses, 4 two-bedroom flats, and an additional 16 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom flats, along with 18 two and 15 three-bedroom houses. With 35% of the units designated as affordable housing, it prioritises affordability.Sustainability is key, with energy-efficient homes designed to minimise environmental impact. The development comprises several phases, each harmoniously integrated into the landscape. Diverse facades enhance curb appeal with Phase 4 using a blend of Michelmersh’s Lindfield Yellow and Danehill Yellow clay bricks, helping structures radiate warmth and charm. Each tone was carefully chosen to complement the broader architectural palette, seamlessly blending Heathy Wood into its verdant, natural surroundings.Further to that, Phase 3 also uses Danehill Yellow, but is further complimented with the autumnal tones of Michelmersh’s Hampshire Stock Red Multi ATR and Hampshire Stock Downs Blend, creating a beautiful combination of clay brick across the entire site.Utilising Building Information Modelling (BIM) for precision in construction, Heathy Wood features internal roads, public spaces, and landscaped areas, creating a vibrant community atmosphere.

Continuing our relationship with Renaker Build Ltd and following specification from TPM Landscapes, Artform Urban Furniture have supplied a full range of standard and bespoke planters including seating elements to Deansgate Square apartment towers in Manchester. The apartment buildings; Elizabeth Tower and Victoria Residence, have roof terraces that have been designed to provide exclusive private outdoor seating and dining areas combined with plenty of plants and shrubs. 

The Edge Hill University redevelopment of the Eastern Campus landscape had a master plan that included a range of seating to complement other factors on this ambitious scheme. Artform were asked to supply architectural seating in the forms of The Salgueiro and Couso seats from the Gravin range. The seating had to be robust and durable with a simple and minimalist design to suit the project. Artform were able to supply these products on a short lead time which suited the needs of the client and the project.

Given the setting of Millmount the choice of external building materials was very important. Lagan Homes wanted to use products and finishes that were aesthetically pleasing, in keeping with the developments surroundings, that were also high quality, durable, maintenance free and cost effective. For those reasons, Lagan Homes chose to use Colinwell Martello Stone Walling on facades and Colinwell’s Allan Block Retaining Wall System for house construction, earth retention andlandscaping purposes.

London-based architectural practice, WilkinsonEyre, has created an undergraduate village for the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology. The landscaped village of timber modular-housing pods, with communal amenities and a central social and learning hub, is based within the Dyson, Malmesbury campus in Wiltshire. As well as establishing a new style of student accommodation, the project breaks ground in design, master planning and precision engineering of truly modular prefabricated building technologies for rapid construction.

Wood Goldstraw Yorath was faced with a large undertaking when designing the new Bet365 Office Headquarters in Staffordshire. But Tobermore was on hand to help make the job easier with the supply of hard landscaping products suitable for the contemporary new building.The new 13,000 sq. m. base was built on the site of the former Sentinel Newspapers office in Media Way in Stoke-on-Trent and is nearly double the size of the Bet365’s previous headquarters at Festival Park in the area.

The £20million project, known as M-SParc, is a subsidiary of Bangor University and boasts labs, office space and business support to companies. Completed in February 2018, Menai Science Park in Anglesey is already making waves throughout the landscaping and architecture industry. The facility is officially Wales’ first dedicated science park, offering a staggering 31,200 square feet of lettable space which includes 45 offices, 23 laboratories and two double height workshops.

Wilkins Terrace has transformed the unsightly and unloved Physics Yard into a visually stunning and indispensable social, events and amenity space for UCL.The terrace area is landscaped in Portland Stone; a natural, sustainable choice with a high fossil content that provides a textured finish and adheres to the strict guidelines for working on the Grade I listed building, which is ‘carved out’ to create a lower terrace alongside the refectory and an upper terrace off Wilkins North Cloisters.

Tobermore is Westpoint Homes’ choice of paving and walling products for any project where hard landscaping is required as the developer has worked with Tobermore on a huge number of successful housing schemes in recent years. Boclair Gardens features a combination of traditional themed block paving, flags, kerbs, walling and retaining wall products which came together to achieve a stunning finish. The scheme was subsequently nominated for two Scottish Herald Property Awards.

The Amersham Vale development was a new build of 120 homes spread across a collection of apartments, maisonettes and houses set beside Charlottenburg Park. The accommodation ranges from 1 bedroom apartments through to 4 bedroom homes with a private landscaped garden area.To create a compliant and cost effective rainscreen facade system, Valcan’s non-combustible aluminium panel, VitraDual, was selected installed back to the Vitrafix VF1 carrier system using colour matched fixings.

Inspired by and integrated within the natural landscape around it, the River Building at Grace Farms, which was designed by SANAA, gently slopes, bends and ‘pools’ with its surroundings.For a place in which people gather to experience nature, encounter the arts, pursue justice, foster community and explore faith, the use of glass, steel, concrete and wood is particularly fitting. In the building’s bathrooms, d line sanitary ware was used for its simple lines and the natural rawness of its material.

Cwt-y-Bugail roof slates feature on a £5 million new-build private house. Professional landscaper Claire Merriman commissioned an architect to design the latest project in her burgeoning property development portfolio. When they proposed Welsh Slate for the roof of the new five-bedroom, five-bathroom private house in five acres of stunning countryside in Surrey, she was happy to acquiesce but wanted to compare the British product with its Chinese and Spanish equivalents.
