Completion was in 2016.

Harbour Central is one of the most recent developments in Canary Wharf, one of London’s two financial centres. There will be 5 residential buildings and a leisure complex. The main building of the development will be the Maine Tower with 42 floors. The upper floors are quite promising, as they will comprise breath-taking panoramic views of London. The Effisus Breather breathable membrane was the chosen solution for this project, in order to ensure the watertightness of the façade, and, at the same time, to allow ventilation of the façades components.

A landmark London entertainment venue is under refurbishment and will feature striking black windows that will not only suit the style and appearance of the Grade II listed building but also meet modern performance criteria for thermal insulation, fire safety, security, and ventilation. The new windows being at installed at Camden’s Koko Club, manufactured by heritage windows specialists Mumford and Wood, use Hodgson Heritage putty to meet performance standards while maintaining a traditional appearance. 

There are a lot of different official documents about the rules and regulation around fire safety and smoke ventilation, which, in turn, influence the way you should choose and install your AOVs. Building regulations are minimum standards that apply to almost all new residential and commercial buildings, and also alterations to the existing ones. If you are planning to use an Automatic Opening Smoke Vent (AOV) System in your project, you will have to comply with the regulations mentioned.

A great example of 1930s Art Deco architecture, The Douglas Building sits on Great Titchfield Street in London’s West End. Formerly known as The Media Village, Douglas House was acquired by serviced office providers The Office Group (TOG) from landlords The Langham Estate in 2019. TOG together with Note Design Studio transformed the building with a colourful concept that blends the distinctive 1930s features and gives a sense of fluidity, openness and light throughout.As its former name suggests this area of London is a hub for local media and IT businesses operating out of the West End and the brief for the building was to create a flexible workspace where people can feel stimulated by their environment leading to greater productivity. Wellness was also a central focus and the building includes an oxygen room, a parents’ room and a roof terrace which are all integral to enabling and inspiring everyone who enters.Well ventilated and an abundance of natural light have become buzzwords in the COVID era and the more than 300 new steel windows from the Clement EB24 range which were chosen by office fit out and refurbishment contractors Parkeray perfectly facilitate both. Polyester powder coated in Pure White and furnished with Warren handles in a satin chrome finish the windows lend the building a contemporary look on the outside as well as supporting the 21st century ways of working inside.Peter Clement, Chief Executive of Clement Windows Group, commented:“As with all prestigious window replacement projects of this magnitude Clement took part in a competitive tender process. Whilst this was in play we understand that both Parkeray and the client’s team had the opportunity to compare our EB24 steel window to others being considered. In 2015, Roger Stretton, an architect and one of the foundersof the practice Berman Guedes Stretton, and Martin Smithcollaborated to bring to fruition their shared enthusiasm forcontemporary, cutting edge, environmentally-friendly residentialdesign.On an attractive, mature garden site near Dorchester in Dorset,two 2,100 sq ft detached, two-storey houses were designedaround south facing courtyards with a one-and-a-half storeyheight living room.When designing the properties, environmentally responsiblematerials, products and processes were at the forefront ofthe specification. To this end, incorporating renewable andinnovative technologies, such as air-source heat pumps and heatrecovery ventilation systems enable the buildings to be highlyenergy efficient.Having previously used Allgood products, Roger recognisedthe brand for its quality and reliability, and consequentlyspecified Allgood’s Alite lever handles and Allgood doorsetsfor the project. He explains, “The new houses have a modern,minimalist design, so it was essential that the ironmongery anddoors complemented this approach, Allgood’s stainless steel Alitehandles and bespoke finished doors met these requirements.”To complement the interior architecture of the buildings, Allgoodsupplied doorsets incorporating fully fabricated and finishedflush doors with rebated frames to create a perimeter shadowgap. An important design feature was a clear line of visionthrough each house along the main axis of the plan. To achievethis, four special, full-height glazed doors with glazed side panelswere supplied. In addition, two 30 minute fire resisting doorswere also specified to the plant-rooms.Arriving on site, factory painted and with hinges and locksalready fitted, the Allgood doorsets provide valuable savings intime, cost and waste as well as a higher quality finish.

Large laboratories, dubbed ‘super-labs’, use AV and acoustic technology to allow up to 120 students to be taught different lessons at the same time in the same space. There is also a range of flexible spaces that help bridge the gap between disciplines, allowing researchers to find better solutions by working together. The labs and research areas benefit from plenty of natural light and ventilation thanks to large expanses of glazing constructed with Schüco FWS 50 curtain walling.

At the end of 2021 we were approached by a couple looking to build their dream retirement home in Braemar.The client's wished to maximise the main aspect to the West, within the tight width of the site, by creating a double height living room with a glazed gable.The final design consisted of a one-and-a-half story dwelling. The client's also chose to install a Mechanical Ventilation & Heat Recovery and Air Source Heat Pump system, with heating supplemented by a feature wood burning stove.

The first homes at Barratt Homes’ new energy efficient Hanham Hall development feature Posi-Joists as the floor system of choice. Each home is constructed using highly insulated materials and is fitted with a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, which is why Posi-Joist was the natural choice for the floor system. Kingspan Potton have been involved throughout the design and delivery of the project, supplying both Structural Insulated Panels and the Posi-Joist floors.

The project was to provide an existing system with the new solution that offers high slip resistance according to evaluation group R13/V10* and to make it processable for a series production. For the new work platform on the trailers, a high-quality standard was to be achieved.The task included strict criteria for using recyclable metal with a minimum of waste without compromising with quality. In particular, the excellent cooperation with our material suppliers (special foils in order not to contaminate the tools with foil residues) enabled us to achieve a perfect surface finish as required by the customer. Further processing is therefore not necessary and minimizes operational ways and resources.Quality assurance of products and series productionDue to the process-guided production, only the slightest deviations from the specified dimensional and quality requirements are possible. These are monitored and documented by instructed personnel and employees trained in the area of quality at specified inspection intervals. In particular, the product test bench set up for this purpose enables our employees to carry out a comprehensive test on the component and immediately correct deviations in series production.The resultCustom made flooring meets the strictest safety criteria for tipper trailersDue to the partly optimized tool technologies and adapted or partly new procedures and processes, the requirements of our customer's specifications could be fulfilled to 100%. The requirements of the employers' liability insurance association and occupational health and safety could be achieved with a certification (IFA) according to slip resistance class R13/V10. This decisive requirement was accompanied by the demands for process-optimized series production while meeting the requirements for dimensional accuracy and perfect surface finish.As a result, we are confident that we can supply our customers with a product that lives up to their name and market position.

With limited height available upon the roof there was no space for a concrete screed to falls. Therefore, architects Purcell Miller Tritton needed a factory machined tapered insulation with a slope to shed water. In addition, the limestone terrace paving must withstand the loads imposed by vehicles and so the insulation beneath had to withstand these dynamic loads without any compression.FOAMGLAS® T4+ slab insulation was specified for the project due to these conditions. FOAMGLAS® does not move or deflect under loads, and is available factory machined with a tapered slope. Its thermal performance is reliable and permanent and it is guaranteed for the lifetime of the building. The new roof of the gallery has paved areas, and green planting with hidden drain age and water supplies.The restaurant terrace gives wonderful view of the World Heritage Site, Greenwich Park and the Royal Observatory. The gallery has some fascinating objects; including jewels which belonged to Sir Francis Drake, journals written by Captain Cook’s during his long voyages, and personal items that survived the sinking of HMS Titanic.

VELFAC slim-framed windows and doors are a key feature of every facade, with dark grey external frames emphasising the pattern of shadows created by textured brickwork and inset window apertures. The VELFAC system has also helped architect Corrie Rounding meet challenging regulatory and sustainability targets while maximising usable space, increasing natural light and improving ventilation. ‘We pushed the contractor to specify VELFAC as we knew the composite frame was the right fit for the Cromer Road project,’ says Corrie. ‘The sustainability of the VELFAC system, and its low energy performance, met Department of Education requirements, while the robust external aluminium frame is ideal for a busy school environment. The design of the windows and doors also met our aesthetic brief, especially the inner timber frames. These are clear lacquered to emphasise the wood, provide a link with the trees surrounding the new building, and to deliver a less ‘sterile’ finish than aluminium or uPVC.’The VELFAC system could also meet key ventilation, daylighting and budget targets: ‘To manage costs, and maximise daylight in the right places, we concentrated our glazing allowance at the areas of most activity,’ explains Corrie, ‘but we also used windows to maximise the usability of the interior. For example, we used tall slim VELFAC units to illuminate the staircase but placed larger windows directly under the stairs to create an additional and useful breakout space.’The Cromer Road building is naturally ventilated, unusual for a Department for Education funded primary school project, with VELFAC units carefully configured to support an efficient flow of fresh air: ‘We wanted to make sure the building could stay comfortable without the need for mechanical cooling, even through the hottest summer,’ says Corrie. ‘This meant the placement of smaller windows on south facing facades, to manage solar gain, and the specification of multiple opening units across the building, including high level teleflex-operated lights. These are especially important in the classroom window screens where ventilation is guided by CO2 monitors.’ To ensure the security of children and staff, all windows also feature restrictors, with finger guards fitted to doors as an additional safety measure.Corrie was also pleased with the support provided by the VELFAC team, especially in the early stages: ‘VELFAC provided the estimates and performance data we needed to convince the contractor that VELFAC was the ideal solution for this project,’ she says, ‘and the school was certainly very happy with the end result’.

Research conducted by the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology and the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute at the University of Oxford, concludes natural daylight aids mental health and sleep patterns benefiting the well being of patients with dementia. Our ThermGard Rooflight system and SpanGard Roof Lanterns feature on several of their projects and in most cases Smoke Ventilation to EN12101 has been mandatory.

Eternit’s fibre cement open protected ridges were used to create an effective ventilation system in the bull accommodation unit at Knocknagael Bull Stud Farm - ensuring a constant outflow of stale, moist air. The width of the air gap created by the open ridge was specifically designed for the number of bulls and size of the building. Profile 6 sheeting from Eternit was also specified for the roof, thanks to its durability and low maintenance costs, as well as its noise insulation properties.

This multi-million-pound training facility at CPFC’s new-look academy includes a full-size indoor 3G training pitch.A state-of-the-art indoor training facility that will allow the football players to train in all weather conditions. GDL were approached to help with the ventilation requirements for the space. Six large rectangular recessed louvres were manufactured and installed to meet the demands of extracting the air from the indoor space generated by eight large fans each with a duty of 12900 m³/hr. 

A prime new mixed residential development, located in Kings Road, Chelsea. All 11 apartments are fully KNX controlled. Smart keypads, integrated thermostats, and PIR automation sensors within each apartment give occupants intuitive and automated control of their heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, and motorised blinds. Luxury boutique hotel Sir Joan, located in Ibiza Town, houses 12 hotel rooms and 2 rooftop suites with private pools and stunning views of the port of Ibiza. The black and white façade combines traditional and current Ibizan architecture. The openings in the façade offer privacy to guests and create natural ventilation and lighting. This stunning aesthetic was achieved using Reynaers CF 77 and CP 155(-LS) sliding and folding door systems, and CS 68 aluminium window systems.

The intricate facade on Garden Halls was inspired by the existing large-scale Victorian and Edwardian buildings that populate Bloomsbury, such as the Russell Square Hotel and Victoria House. The windows employ a very thin profile section, achieved with Reynaers CS 38-SL systems, and have a decorated, perforated aluminium screen to the side. This uses an insulated panel that can be opened from the inside for ventilation. The lower level screens are bronze-coloured anodised aluminium, while the upper screens are powder coated.

When Vitsoe, makers of iconic minimal-modernist furniture, decided to build a new HQ, it was always going to be something special. Central to the design is the saw tooth roof with 240 northlights created using the VELUX Modular Skylight system. The elegant sightlines of the VELUX skylight frame sections complemented Vitsoe's own minimal-modernist design philosophy. " Natural lighting and ventilation from the VELUX Modular Skylights were critical to restoring a connection between the building's users and the world around them."

When the existing bitumen roof at East Preston Infant School came to the end of its service life, naturally the decision was made to replace the existing roof and upgrade the rooflights. Kingspan Light + Air introduced 23 Kingspan Classic Skylight Domes into the building enabling the school to embrace natural light, ventilation and smoke management performance benefits.

The innovative new low odour, non-taint polyaspartic based floor coating, Nitoflor PAFS, was used to rejuvenate the floor of a poultry processing area.

The heritage property was first built in 1931 as an office building, so the acoustics had to be upgraded during the renovation process without spoiling the character of the original design.

NORclad supplied nearly 7,000/LM of pre-coated Thermowood across this contemporary project in Berkhamsted.Thermowood is a great timber when it comes to applying a coating, after going through the heat treating process, the Finnish grown European Redwood/Whitewood (Scandinavian Pine/Spruce) is more stable. It is suitable in conditions of changing humidity, and its thermal insulation properties are improved, ideal for use in exposed areas such as External Timber Cladding.The heat treatment process enables the use of Scandinavian Redwood in areas requiring a service life of up to 30 years without the need for any further preservative or coating to be applied. The process removes resin from timber, as a result there is no resin leakage or “bleed” through the surface coatings. The effect of this together with the improved stability can lead to a lower maintenance requirement, combined with the application of the Sansin SDF system, which will further protect the outside of wood.The SDF product also protects the inside by allowing the timber to ‘breath’ – helping to prevent moisture from getting trapped in the wood and causing rot.

Our client Pocket Living had the vision to refurbish and transform the 1920’s industrial office building of Astra House in Arklow Road, London into 44 affordable homes. NorDan products were the perfect choice for a refurbishment development like this one. Our fixed light windows allow extensive use of large glass areas and particular architectural styles. Additionally, NorDan fully reversible windows offer extra safety assurance, with integrated child safety restrictors that locks the hinge to operate in the ventilation position only.

1400 sqm of the unique Sotech Optima Shingle System has been used on the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory, Birmingham University. The shingles were Anodised Regency Gold 2, 2.5 & 3, the finish was selected to create a scaled texture, which can be seen in the project photography. This stunning façade had to be flexible enough to accommodate the practical demands of a modern building. Due to a requirement to ventilate the high level plantroom, the shingles in this area were perforated and fixed to a bespoke support grid, which integrates seamlessly with the surrounding cladding.

Originally used during Victorian and Edwardian period as sewer vents or "stench flaps", these cast iron vents with 100mm round spigots are making a bit of a come back. We've replaced the flaps (that used to allow air in but not out) with mesh so air flows freely in both directions and they've become quite a hit with specifiers ventilating basements and cellars and new builds. The starting point: an awkwardly shaped lot High above the city centre, halfway between the mountains and the sea, there is a building that nobody can fail to notice: 'U Pavayun' proudly showcases the principality’s official colours – white and red – in a way uniquely its own. By combining vivid colours inspired by nature with a bold and modern architectural concept, the building maximises the visual impact of its ventilated façades. To add thermal efficiency to the cladding’s enduring beauty, external insulation has been integrated into the façade system.

Glenpark provides 100 places for 3-4 year olds and eligible two-year olds around the Greenock area, west of Glasgow. A commitment by the Scottish Government to increase free early learning and childcare hours available in Scotland from 600 to 1,140 per year by 2020 proved to be the catalyst for creating this inspiring development Holmes Miller Architects had to ensure that both children and staff could access the benefits of natural light and ventilation, whilst identifying an easy mechanism to control glare and provide shade.

Investment in the infrastructure at Festival Place shopping centre in Basingstoke has included the refurbishment and extension of the 3,000 space car park. Lang+Fulton worked with Bell Associates to design a new façade using their STEREO-KINETIC® Wall cladding. The gradation of the stainless steel tiles was designed to allow for ventilation whilst transforming the appearance of the original car park and linking it to the new extension with one seamless frontage. The panels were mounted on to an independent steel frame which was bolted back to new structural steelwork.

Fit Fresh needed a flooring system that could withstand the demands in its busy processing facility, such as regular forklift traffic and cold rooms kept at temperatures of around 5ºC.

This multi award winning seafront park was inspired by the meeting of coastal processes and the interventions used to control them and celebrates the fascinating heritage of Rhyl in the form of a ‘beachcombing’ artwork experience.

The objective for this project at Bristol Airport was to decrease the processing times to get the passengers into the airside lounges, whilst preventing passenger stress and allowing passengers more time in duty free.

In an ongoing commitment to prioritize the well-being and independence of individuals in supervised housing, FAEMA Mental Health sought innovative solutions to address the challenges faced by residents during their daily routines. Among these challenges was the task of drying off after showering, which posed safety concerns and hindered autonomy for many residents. This collaboration aimed to transform the drying experience, ensuring not only safety but also comfort and empowerment for residents.CHALLENGEFAEMA Mental Health, an association dedicated to the well-being and autonomy of its residents in supervised housing, faced a recurring challenge: safety and autonomy during the drying process after showering. Many residents, due to their health condition, experienced difficulties using traditional towels, raising concerns about safety and quality of life in these environments.SOLUTIONIn response to this concern, FAEMA reached out to Valiryo Technologies in search of an effective and safe solution. The installation of Valiryo body dryer was presented as the ideal solution to address these challenges. Valiryo not only offers efficient drying but also minimizes the risk of falls and injuries by eliminating the need for unnatural movements associated with towel use. Additionally, its innovative design and ease of use make it an accessible option for all residents, regardless of their mobility or physical abilities.RESULTSThe implementation of Valiryo in FAEMA's supervised housing has yielded positive and tangible results.
