Sustainable focus and biophilic aesthetics for new schoolSwitching the specification from adhered floors to adhesive-free, gave an approximate carbon saving of 59.27%, saving 3,893.34kg of Co2 emissions.IssueHolyrood Academy provides secondary education for 11–18-year-olds in Chard, Somerset. One of the schools’ values is for pupils to ‘be supported and challenged to achieve the very best they can.’ Carrying this ethos through into the furnishing of a new school extension, main contractor BAM Construct UK wanted to utilise sustainable products, reducing the buildings carbon footprint, and ensuring the build was delivered to timescales and budget.ApproachTo ensure the project was finished as sustainably as possible, representatives from BAM Construct UK, Altro and Recofloor met to discuss options for specification, and managing and recycling waste from the build. After the consultation, and with prior knowledge and experience of previous successful installations, adhesive-free floor options were reviewed and selected based on the cost, time, and carbon-saving benefits. “It was imperative we delivered the build to timescales, but as sustainably as possible. The adhesive-free floors saved project time and reduced carbon output.” said Graham Holt, Construction Project Manager, BAM Construct UK.SolutionCreating maximum impact with minimum downtime, Altro Wood adhesive-free was specified for the dining area and Altro Cantata adhesive-free was specified for the corridors and communal areas, providing a safe, durable and decorative solution for the busy spaces.Altro Stronghold 30 was specified for the commercial kitchen providing comfort underfoot and keeping staff safe from slips.Hard-wearing Altro Walkway 20 was specified for the toilets providing abrasion resistance, PUR cleanability, and superior chemical and stain resistance.Altro Stronghold 30 achieves Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance (PTV ≥55, R12) and is designed to minimise risk in wet and greasy conditions for the lifetime of the flooring.Altro Walkway 20 is a versatile, hard-wearing safety flooring for general purpose areas. A contractors favourite for over 30 years as it’s easy to install.Altro Wood adhesive-free uses our award-winning adhesive-free installation method, it can be welded and walked on the same day, and at the end of its life can be removed easily, allowing it to be reused or recycled.Altro Cantata adhesive-free provides enhanced cleanability making it ideal for busy public spaces where disruption needs to be minimal, and it has no associated adhesive odours.

Addenbrookes Hospital Surge Centre2000m² Of CemfloorA temporary surge facility on the site of Addenbrookes Hospital to relieve pressure on the main hospital as part ofthe NHS' regional surge planFloor Screeding Solutions installed 2,000m2 of Cemfloor, the chosen screed for the project, which was supplied by Mick George Concrete, Cambridge. With the rising case numbers of Corona virus during the pandemic, hospitals were coming under increasing pressure for more critical care beds, and Surge Plans were put in place across the country to help alleviate this pressure.Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge sought to construct a ‘Surge Centre’ to cope with the additional demands on the hospital, and Cemfloor was chosen for the project due to its faster installation time and drying time compared to traditional sand and cement screeds. This helped to keep the project on track with its tight building schedule.Lewis Deck construction offered a strong light weight flooring option for the large pour area. As Cemfloor is a flowing screed, 500m2 of screed per day was poured over this by Dave Washbrook and his team from Floor Screeding Solutions, eliminating the need for on-site mixing. The main advantage Cemfloor has over other flowing screeds is the quicker drying times, and that it can accept foot traffic after 24 / 48 hours, meaning that construction could continue quickly and efficiently to meet the project deadline.

Newcastle Academy polyurethane sports hall refurbishment

Newcastle Academy polyurethane sports hall refurbishment

Total Vibration Solutions Limited t/a TVS Group

Scope of Works After more than a dozen years of intensive use, the flooring of Newcastle Academy’s sports hall was showing its age. TVS addressed areas of localised damage and sanded the floor to create a better surface for bonding – all in preparation for a rapid flooring makeover. Next TVS installed a new, self-levelling and seamless polyurethane performance wear layer. It was finished with a new sports grade polyurethane topcoat in RAL 7000 ‘Squirrel Grey’ designed to give the sports hall a more updated look. Then, following discussions with the Academy, priority sports were identified and a customised line marking plan agreed for the compact sports hall. Finally, brand new, extra wide cover details were supplied and installed to ensure protection at all points of entry. The total installation took just 5 days and delivered an instant transformation. For those looking to update, replace or refurbish sports facilities after a decade or more of use, this project underlines the distinct advantages of selecting TVS polyurethane sports flooring, namely: • No necessity to fully remove the existing sports flooring, saving time and expense • No need to re-screed the subfloor or install new shock-absorbing layers Providing existing surfaces still perform to required standards, TVS can rejuvenate surfaces with a new hard-wearing polyurethane layer that transforms its appearance and provides significant time and cost savings. "This is our first time working with the team at TVS Group and its safe to say it certainly won’t be the last! From start to finish we have nothing but praise for the great level of communication, professional advice and guidance we received from the onset of this project. What we found to be particularly helpful was the number of questions and communications that took place to ensure we had the right installation for the Academy, that the specification met with Sport England criteria and, as importantly, that our students and community groups would have an exemplary sports facility available to them. Pre contract health and safety information was provided timely and without issue. The installation team worked fantastically and from a contract management perspective were excellent to work with. Post installation we were provided with the O&M manual. The installation itself is fabulous and our students and staff are amazed at the transformation of the sports facility in just a small number of days. We look forward to many years use of our fantastic new facility!" Vickie Keeling, Trust Director

Total Vibration Solutions Limited t/a TVS Group

Third Space has opened its sixth and most luxurious health club in London with spacious training areas, state-of-the-art facilities, tranquil yoga studio, 20m adult pool, cycle amphitheatre and special facilities for youngsters.Free Weights AreaTVS Group’s heavy-duty, interlocking SPORTEC® Style Tiles, custom-produced black and grey-flecked finish perfectly completemented the gym’s colour scheme. Installing a layer of SPORTEC® Team Cup-X flooring beneath the tiles provided extra protection for the concrete subfloor and will further reduce noise and vibrations, while TVS proprietary rubber ramped edges created a neat transition with adjacent gym areas.Stetching AreaTo offer comfort and durability for the club’s large stretching area, TVS Group installed its SPORTEC® MotionFlex product, a fine-grained polyurethane puzzle-mat. It is ideal for fitness applications involving floor-based movements and wellness activities. The interconnecting tiles are simple to install and neatly shaped to suit most flooring schemes while their elegant dark grey colour set the calming mood for this part of the gym.Athletics-Based Track AreaTVS Sports Carpet was selected for the track as it offers excellent grip underfoot, especially relevant for speed, agility and quickness drills. The durability of the surface also allows athletes to push or drag a sled, helping to further develop their muscular strength and endurance. The track was supplied in a cool, oceanic navy blue and white colour scheme.Main Gym AreaThe expected high usage of the main gym area meant the flooring had to be sufficiently resilient. To achieve this and to ensure a perfectly level flooring finish across the gym, TVS Group first laid a dense rubber shock pad over the concrete substrate. It was overlaid with a covering from the highly wear resistant SPORTEC® Purcolor range. A light grey finish was chosen to reflect the sophisticated look and feel of the club. The StudioIn the studio, where high intensity training will take place, TVS Group opted for a highly elastic shock-absorbing underlay overlaid with a wear-resistant performance layer called SPORTEC® Color. The combination will protect the concrete substrate below while offering a comfortable and safe surface above for those involved in a diverse range of training activities.Other Fitness AreasIn other areas of the gym TVS Group supplied and installed a variety of high performing acoustic underlays, helping reduce noise and vibrations caused by treadmill running and other high impact activities in the studios.

Office to apartments conversion acoustic design, Douglas, Isle of Man

Office to apartments conversion acoustic design, Douglas, Isle of Man

Hush Acoustics

When the owner of an office building on the Isle of Man took the decision to redevelop the property into four apartments, he partnered with chartered architect Andrew Bentley to arrive at a design. The building had previously been converted from a bar to offices in the 1990s, but the approach adopted to the soundproofing as part of this conversion project would need to be fully assessed and tested for compliance with today’s domestic dwelling standards. STEPPING UP TO HIGHER ACOUSTIC STANDARDSUnder the building regulations covering the Isle of Man, which are consistent with Approved Document E in England & Wales, the separating floors needed to achieve an airborne sound transmission level greater or equal to 43db and, for impact sound transmission, no higher than 64db. Following a comprehensive consultation period by Hush Acoustics soundproofing experts, it was apparent that the existing acoustic flooring design fitted during the original conversion was inadequate. This meant a complete redesign of the floors was required to bring them up to an acceptable residential standard.A SOLUTION THAT EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS The solution came with the Hush MF Ceiling System. This creates a suspended ceiling, separated from the existing structure using the Hush Acoustic Hangers, allowing for Hush-Slab 100 sound absorber slabs to be fitted into the void created. Two layers of 15mm Soundbloc plasterboard were then installed onto the suspended ceiling’s metal frame.Key to the success of the new acoustic system was the quality of the installation, which the Hush Acoustics team – as with all projects – offered guidance on to the installation contractor. This was important from a fire safety perspective too, with a fire specialist also engaged to ensure all gaps, junction details and products were installed and sealed correctly. ‘BEST EVER’ ACOUSTIC RESULTS As a result of this new acoustic flooring, the flats benefit from soundproofing levels not normally seen in conversion projects of this kind. The airborne sound insulation levels for the floors tested in various rooms ranged from 50db to 67db (minimum level to pass test is 43db) and for impact sound it was between 38db and 50db (must be below 64db).Project architect Andrew Bentley commented:“The test results were so good that the acoustician who carried out the testing of the completed installation said it was the best results he had ever seen. In the lounge of one of the flats, there was virtually no background noise detected despite sound of 107db being generated in the lounge of the flat directly above – that’s a noise level almost as loud as you would experience at a rock concert.”

INTRAsystems

Project DetailsSystem: INTRAtechSpecification: INTRAtech with Elite Anthracite 607 insertsClient: YY LondonInstaller: SDS MattingLocation: South Colonnade, Canary WharfSustainable Focus at Flagship Canary Wharf RefurbishmentYY London, South Colonnade is a remarkable refurbishment of one of Canary Wharf's original buildings. Buckley Gray Yeoman's (BGY) vision 'reduced the overall energy demand of the building by 62%, and saved 10.260 tonne CO2' by renewing instead of demolishing. It is certified BREEAM Outstanding and WELL platinum. Redefining the Possibilities for Old BuildingsBGY carefully chose materials throughout the scheme for their sustainability, performance and aesthetics. But, one of the critical practical considerations for the Entrance Matting was compatibility with raised access flooring. After using INTRAtech to great visual effect in another project, they understood it would look fantastic and perform well. But they were thrilled that it could coordinate with raised access flooring and fulfil all the projects sustainability criteria as well. Cut to ShapeAs INTRAtech could be cut to the desired shape, it offered BGY greater design opportunities. It meant they could more efficiently achieve the curved shape, which reflects the organic form of the building's footprint. The design repeats curved shapes across the building but culminates in zonal flooring materials and mirrored ceiling panels in the entrance lobbies. We produced detailed drawing and supplied pre-made larger panels, labelled clearly for easier installation. This helped to ensure we accommodated floor service panels and made transport and handling more efficient. Bonus Points for PracticalityBoth entrances have service panels in the raised access flooring, so for easy access for maintenance and servicing, small sections of the Entrance Matting can be lifted. But the building welcomes 100s of visitors to office and retail spaces each day, so the Entrance Matting must endure constant comings and goings. INTRAtech has an open construction to allow water and dirt to drain away efficiently,, so is ideal for the revolving doors. Thanks to its modular square frame, it has the benefit of withstanding multi-directional traffic. Whichever direction a visitor moves, the fibres remain uptight in the square module, so INTRAtech Entrance Matting can efficiently absorb, clean and protect - time after time, after time. Sustainable as StandardBGY chose INTRAsystems for our unrivalled whole-life environmental commitments and proven product application. INTRAtech is made from recycled aluminium and combined with Econyl 100% recycled nylon inserts, the units are fully recyclable. BGY chose the Elite inserts in Anthracite 607 to complement the lobbies' neutral palette and provide greater design choices for tenants in the Cat A fit-out. INTRAsystems Elite fibre inserts are a great all-rounder for dirt scraping and moisture removal but boast excellent sound absorption, making it an ideal choice in this vast open-plan, double-heigh setting. Repurpose and RefitBy selecting INTRAtech, BGY galvanised their commitment to sustainable materials in the environmentally conscious design. Plus, INTRAtech delivered high-performance and design continuity for this prestigious setting, along with long-term practicality for raised access flooring. The entire project highlights the design potential of retrofit and sets the standards for what's practically possible with ageing buildings.

We put the "Shhh" in The Shard

We put the "Shhh" in The Shard

CMS Danskin Acoustics

When CMS Danskin Acoustics Limited was engaged by Progressive Group to ensure the Shangri-La Hotel’s 42 floors in the Shard were effectively soundproofed, it wasn’t a straightforward assignment. From the very first sketches drawn on a napkin by Piano during dinner with entrepreneur and property developer Irvine Sellar, the Shard was always intended to be ‘all about the windows’, with expressive façades of angled glass reflecting sunlight and the sky, and affording 360° views of the city.Unfortunately, when the glazing is central to the design, floors can get in the way of the overall effect, and the temptation is to minimise floor heights (within Building Regulation parameters, of course). This presents a significant challenge to acoustic insulation installers. In short, the thinner the floor, the harder the soundproofing material has to work acoustically and the more physical punishment it has to endure. For approximately 70% of the floors, Progressive applied a Gyvlon liquid screed at a 40mm minimum thickness. The screed was pumped from ground level, with the largest pour in excess of 80m3 covering an area of 1,680m2. In approximately 30% of the floor areas, however, the floor screeding level could not be raised because of the existing floor-level transom in the curtain walling. This meant that there were instances of screed thicknesses of approximately 25mm in places.CMS Danskin’s Regupol E48 (REGUPOL sonus curve 8) was specified, a Robust Detail approved (E-FC-6) high-performance screed isolation material. E48 (REGUPOL sonus curve 8) was perfect for those ‘thin screed’ areas, with its maximum load bearing capacity of 3000kg/m3 (30kN/m2), combined with a mean average impact sound insulation performance of 46dB and a mean average airborne sound insulation performance of 49dB, both values well in excess of the requirements of Part E of the Building Regulations.Building Regulations aside, E48’s (REGUPOL sonus curve 8) ‘over-performance’ is crucial for a hotel as exclusive as the Shangri-La. The award-winning, globe-spanning hotel group prides itself on providing a customer-focused experience, with the emphasis very much on luxury. Intrusive noise from above or below a guest’s accommodation would almost certainly undermine those efforts. Plus, with this being a flagship project for the Shangri-La – their first hotel in Europe – ‘fit for purpose’ simply wasn’t an option. As a Robust Detail underscreed, E48 (REGUPOL sonus curve 8) has already been rigorously pre-tested to ensure it achieves a minimum performance of 5dB over and above Part E, thus eliminating the need for Pre-Completion Testing. However, CMS Danskin and Progressive, having worked together successfully on the exclusive One Hyde Park development, preferred to adopt a partnership approach, with the emphasis on planning and testing, giving absolute certainty to all parties and making full use of all the skills, expertise and experience at their disposal. To this end, Paul Absolon, CMS Danskin’s Technical Director, worked closely with Progressive’s technicians, carrying out off-site simulations and fitting trials with varying screed thicknesses. Only once both parties were satisfied with every aspect of E48’s (REGUPOL sonus curve 8) acoustic performance in a ‘real world’ situation did the installation proceed.More than 16,000m2 of E48 (REGUPOL sonus curve 8) were installed over approximately 3 months, with Progressive and CMS Danskin maintaining their close working relationship throughout.Tony Cooney, Estimating Manager at Progressive Group, said, “The completion of the screed and insulation work on the Shangri La Hotel development was a fantastic achievement and it presented a number of very challenging situations – both technical and logistical. Solutions to these challenging situations are achieved by the co-operation of all parties involved – including material suppliers. The technical assistance provided by CMS Danskin on this Shangri-La project and other prestigious contracts in the London region in recent years has been exceptional and we look forward to continuing our excellent relationship.”Said Paul Absolon, “It was a privilege working on a project as ground-breaking and culturally significant as The Shard, and it was a pleasure working with the professionals at Progressive Group again. At CMS Danskin, we like to be put to the test. The Shard certainly was a challenge and we’re proud to have met that challenge and delivered.”

Where (and where not) to install your hand dryer

Where (and where not) to install your hand dryer

Heat Outdoors & Handy Dryers

In theory, placing your hand dryer or towel dispenser in just the right location should be easy. In the simplest terms, it involves measuring the hand dryer height from the floor and planning the right hand dryer distance from the sink and other washroom features.

A MODERN BATHROOM RENOVATION WITH ORIENTAL INFLUENCES

A MODERN BATHROOM RENOVATION WITH ORIENTAL INFLUENCES

KEUCO

A spacious bathroom with floor-level shower and bathtub, a bedroom flooded with light and a practical working space: the Belfqihs have achieved their own very personal dream residence through a large-scale conversion of their home. After their children had left home, Kordula and Mohammed Belfqih decided to renovate the upper storey of their home in Krefeld, restructuring it completely at the same time. It all started with the desire for a modern and comfortable bathroom. One perfectly tuned to the needs of the new two-person household: the married couple imagined light, spacious rooms on their newly designed floor. Planner Bettina Bickert from Plankreis, Krefeld (www.plankreis.com) was given the exciting task of creating a new living atmosphere. Here, modern elements, alongside oriental influences, were to contribute to the planning: for the Belfqihs unite a Westphalian way of life with Moroccan traditions.
