Kalwall Translucent Cladding - Heathrow Airport Terminal 4

Kalwall

DAYLIGHTING TAKES OFF AT HEATHROWThe ageing glass skylights of Terminal 4 at London’s Heathrow Airport were in need of repair. The challenges for the project’s main contractor was finding a way to keep the project moving with little disruption to this busy terminal and also maintaining the airport’s security protocol. The answer was a single-source solution presented by Structura UK, the curtainwall engineers who are the exclusive distributor of Kalwall products in the United Kingdom and Ireland.18,836 square feet (1750 square meters) of Kalwall Skyroof® cladding were used above the terminal’s International Departure Lounge and check-in desks to replace the 30+ year old glass skylights. The Kalwall translucent sandwich panels are fully Aviation Security in Airport Development (ASAID) compliant with regards to blast performance and improve the solar control and insulation for the space below. In fact, Kalwall 100™ panels were specifically chosen to exceed code requirements, therefore future-proofing the project. The whole retrofit was completed externally using a custom moving scaffold and during evening hours, meaning there was no disruption to the inside of the building. And, as far as value, the lightweight translucent panels allowed for the existing substrate to be adapted and reused – a savings of nearly $9 million (£7m) in project costs and more than a year off the build timeline.“Structura UK was a new supplier to the major capital projects programme on the Airport (and) they delivered a flawless installation despite multiple challenging circumstances including adverse unseasonal weather, unexpected contaminated materials and multiple design changes,” says Ben Hooper, Senior Project Manager at Heathrow.Structura worked in conjunction with Structural Engineers Webb Yates for a scheme designed by Pascall+Watson architects. The project proved so successful that main contractor Balfour Beatty named Structura as their ‘Most Promising New Supplier 2018’. Kalwall offers complete line-of-sight protection, maintaining privacy for the security screening area and departure lounges while bathing the interior with diffused daylighting, regardless of the weather. Apart from providing the visual protection, its inherent strength and heavy-duty impact resistance make it ideal for secure locations such as this. It offers the highest protection in terms of windbornedebris and resistance to impact, abrasion and point loads. Not only is it man safe, but Kalwall achieves S:AA (BS 476 part 3) and Broof(t4) to EN 13501 part 5 for external fire performance. The exterior face is colour stable and includes a UV resistant, self-cleaning surface. This means that normal rainfall helps to keep the surface free of dust and dirt while at the same time retaining its original colour during the weathering process.

Edinburgh’s John Lewis gets an upgrade during refurb with PATTRESS PLUS

Edinburgh’s John Lewis gets an upgrade during refurb with PATTRESS PLUS

MEDITE SMARTPLY

The refurbishment of the 160,000 square-foot John Lewis store in Edinburgh includes the installation of SMARTPLY PATTRESS PLUS – MEDITE SMARTPLY’s robust pattressing panel.Bradagh Interiors Ltd, which has been working intermittently on the refurbishment during the past five years, specified PATTRESS PLUS throughout levels one, two and three of the department store, after having successfully used it before.Kevin Gallagher, Director of Bradagh Interiors, explained: “There’s more than one reason why we chose PATTRESS PLUS. Firstly, I had issues in the past with using plywood on the face of studs because of the acoustics field. Plywood is made up of layers of veneer glued together and although it is a natural product, it’s not fully regimental and it was allowing sound to penetrate through the gap. By using PATTRESS PLUS I could screw everything directly into the studs and avoid this problem.“Furthermore, because plywood had previously been used on the face of the walls, they were going much higher than the ceiling in certain places. This is something else I wanted to avoid on this project.”SMARTPLY PATTRESS PLUS is an engineered OSB/3 panel incorporating a continuous recess, specially designed to accommodate ‘C’ shaped metal studs used in the construction of plasterboard partitions. This robust panel is tested to the relevant sections of BS5234 Part 2 demonstrating high pull-out strength, making it ideal for large commercial fit outs where wall installations and racking may have to bear heavy and changing loads.Pre-cut and pre-rebated for a speedier, safer and easier installation, PATTRESS PLUS comes in thicknesses of 15mm and 18mm, and in sizes ranging from 1250mm by 397mm to 2397mm by 597mm to suit a range of partition systems with 400mm and 600mm stud centres.Crucially, PATTRESS PLUS does not add to the thickness of the partition wall. It provides a robust partition structure suitable for use in public access areas including corridors and stairwells, which contributes to higher levels of impact resistance. The added benefit of PATTRESS PLUS is that it is manufactured with zero added formaldehyde, making it suitable for environmentally sensitive interior applications where there are likely to be high numbers of people such as hospitals, museums and department stores.“We have used it on multiple occasions before,” Kevin continued, “and have always been happy with the result, as have my clients, and this contract is no exception.”The refurbishment will see new features and services added to the John Lewis store, including a home design department, an optician, a beauty concierge and dedicated areas for famous brands.

Leicester City Football Club

Sotech Ltd

5000m2 of Optima TFC+ in 3mm Aluminium PPC (Interpon) Y4207i `Corten Bond` has been used in the completion of the striking Leicester City Football Club training ground. As visible in the project photos, the project has been finished in an eye-catching ‘copper’ colour, which was unique to this design. Working closely with supply chain partner, Akzo Nobel, the Sotech team developed the project specific paint to resemble a weathered steel, giving the façade a unique and dynamic look.Using the latest 3D software, Sotech and installer Roofdec worked closely to develop the complex interfaces, where vertical fin panels intersected with the horizontal panels.Whilst working to a tight programme and under the restrictions caused by COVID-19, it was important that the Sotech operations team maintained constant dialogue with the Roofdec site team to ensure delivery schedules were managed and adapted as necessary.Finite Analysis undertaken by Sotech’s Technical Engineer, Mohamadreza Jenaban, was used to ensure Sotech’s new and improved approach to panel stiffeners was effective and reliable. The final project, with its curved design to blend in with its rural setting, features 11 full-size training pitches, eight smaller pitches, five training grids, two goalkeeping areas and a pitch for the club’s academy sides with a 499-seater stand. The main training centre building includes 35 bedrooms so players can stay at the site.TESTIMONIALS:Jamie Brown, Estimator at Sotech said: “The finish is striking. Knowing what went into making it possible makes it even more impressive to consider.”Scott Richardson, Architectural Facade Design Technician at Sotech, noted: “I was proud to be part of this project. I’m not a Leicester City football fan but when I hear it mentioned in passing on the radio or TV it’s hard not to take notice”.Akzo Nobel’s UK and Ireland Specification Manager, Naveen Sandhu, explained:“We were presented with a unique challenge by the KSS team, whereby the cladding design intent sought to create a futuristic look and feel, whilst still embracing the traditions of the club’s Thai owners.“A warm and earthy tone was desired, but one which was able to achieve certain characteristics, namely the ability to subtly change in tone based on exposure to different daylight conditions.“Our expert in-house formulators devised a multi-faceted copper metallic effect, backed with a super durable polyester backbone. Copper is traditionally viewed as a lucky colour in Thailand. The resulting finish certainly not only elevates the myriad of components across the complex, but the enhanced durability technology which underpins it, ensures it will do so for many years to come.”

The Sycamores, Matlock - Timber windows and doors case study

Gowercroft Joinery Limited

Timber Window Project: Restoring Charm to a Matlock CottageDiscover how Gowercroft successfully transformed Robert Jones's quaint stone cottage in Matlock with high-quality timber windows and doors.A Challenging Derbyshire CottageWhen Robert Jones approached Gowercroft for his cottage renovation in Matlock, they faced an intriguing challenge. His 200-square-meter, 5-bedroom cottage nestled into a Derbyshire hillside, offering stunning countryside views. The property had three stories at the front but only one at the rear, with the ground floor patio situated atop an integral garage.Robert aimed to breathe new life into the neglected property by undertaking a comprehensive refit, including new electrics, bathrooms, stairs, carpets, roofing, garage, and replacement doors and windows. He sought a renovation that honoured the local aesthetics, using durable traditional materials like English slate for the roof and energy-efficient timber windows and patio doors to maximise the scenic vistas.Meeting the ChallengeAccess to the property posed a considerable challenge due to its location on a sharp bend with a steep incline at the end of a winding country road. The installation of oversized windows and doors seemed daunting, but Gowercroft embraced the challenges with creative solutions.Gowercroft crafted and installed eleven Hardwick flush casement windows, a Peveril lift and slide patio door, two floor-to-ceiling fixed light windows, an Accoya® front door, and a timber Melbourne stable door at the side. The lift and slide patio doors and glazed screens had to feature 6mm-thick glass to ensure structural integrity, making each unit weigh approximately 200 kilograms.Given the size and weight of the units, manual handling was impractical. Gowercroft enlisted a specialist contractor with a telehandler to navigate the steep drive and hoist the units into place. Additional personnel joined the effort."The job demanded teamwork, meticulous planning, and coordination with the ongoing building work as we removed the old windows and adjusted the existing openings," Robert explained.Exceeding ExpectationsThroughout the installation, unforeseen challenges arose, including the need to cut away patio paving slabs blocking the original patio doors and repositioning the door frame to accommodate the new Accoya® front door. Gowercroft even provided window boards for the new openings.Robert praised the Gowercroft team for their exceptional dedication and problem-solving attitude, stating, "I can't speak highly enough of the Gowercroft team. They tackled every obstacle and challenge with a 'can-do' spirit."Gowercroft's commitment to quality craftsmanship and their ability to navigate complex installations allowed Robert Jones to transform his Matlock cottage into a charming and energy-efficient retreat that perfectly complements its picturesque surroundings.

Crimple Hall, Harrogate

Crimple Hall, Harrogate

Tobermore

The Challenge Modern paving was required for a contemporary farmer market and restaurant  Crimple Garden Centre in Harrogate has increased its retail offering to include a food hall, restaurant, gift shop and art gallery. The vision for the new building was to provide an open plan artisan style farmer market and restaurant that comfortably coexists with the existing garden centre.  The modern building form was driven by its highly sustainable design with natural ventilation, northlights and its saw-tooth style roof adding originality to the scheme. A key point when designing the area was the importance of creating an identity which relates to the adjacent garden centre but gives distinction to the new offering.  A visually appealing external area was important to attract customers into the farmers market and garden centre. Modern paving that could withstand significant footfall was required to complement the contemporary aesthetic of the new market.  The Solution Artro linear paving harmonises the styling, lines and tones of the new building  Tobermore worked closely with the project team to ensure design aspirations were met. Crimple required a unique external area to align with the quirky finish of the new artisan style farmer market and restaurant. Tobermore’s Artro linear block paving was the perfect hard landscaping solution for the main entrance area.  Artro’s strength lies in its ability to adapt its look depending on the colour and laying pattern used. A unique look was created using a mix of two cool grey tones. A high percentage of the lighter Platinum was combined with a low percentage of the darker Carbon. Artro’s stretcher bond orientation naturally guides customers inside the Crimple building. The linear paving blocks offer a modern, hard-wearing surface that will withstand significant footfall and vehicle trafficking, if required. With accessibility in mind, Artro provides confidence with a low slip/skid surface in all-weather conditions. The smooth surface finish is suitable for prams and wheelchair users.  A featured walkway from the front row parking bays to the main entrance was created using Tobermore’s Mayfair Flags. The silver slabs feature sparkling natural granite aggregates that add to the scheme’s contemporary aesthetic. As sustainability was a key consideration of the project, Tobermore’s permeable paving option Hydropave Tegula Duo was chosen with its ability to function as a SuDS paving system. Laid in the warm shade Bracken, the contrast between the paving products helped to zone the pedestrian areas.   Tobermore’s granite aggregate Fusion Edge added the finishing touch to the project with its modern aesthetic.

Boasting an impressive 59dB acoustic integrity, the walls allow concurrent meetings to run entirely undisturbed. Inspiring lively sharing of ideas, Style also installed six vibrantly coloured, moveable glass ‘squiggle’ panels, providing magnetic, writable surfaces for use in dynamic discussions.

Bolsover Model Village

TRC Windows

The Grade II listed village of New Bolsover, near Chesterfield, was built in 1891 to house local workers. Terraced houses and community buildings were constructed around a central communal square. In 2015, supported by Heritage Lottery funding, Bolsover District Council initiated a project to upgrade all 194 two and three-bedroom homes. We were commissioned to manufacture and install 504 heritage casement windows and 691 heritage box sash windows, with architects Halsall Lloyd Partnership stipulating that they must closely match the original. All the windows are softwood with hardwood sills; and include approximately 12,000 individual Slimlite double glazed panels.
