Contemporary outdoor living space looks incredible with new steel windows and doors

Contemporary outdoor living space looks incredible with new steel windows and doors

Clement Windows Group

Our client, One 17 Design, acted as Architects, Interior Designers and Project Managers for this superb project with involvement from inception through to completion. Their brief was to create a home office / garden room in the grounds of an existing detached home, which was done by extending the detached garage. The material palette for the garden room predominately featured oak and steel. Blackened oak cabinetry and steel fenestration provide a striking contrast against the natural oak frame and cladding. Clever detailing in the relationship between the oak frame and steel doors adds a contemporary twist. The bricks for the outside of the building were selected to match the brickwork of the existing bungalow. Bespoke Clement steel windows and doors from the W20 range were chosen for the project, including an interior door, fitted with reeded glass that leads to the bathroom. All handles were powder coated black to match the steel frames. The project won “Best amazing space” at the 2022 Northern Design Awards.Freddie Garside, Partner and Director at One 17 Design, said:“We and our client were delighted with the finished doors and screens. The narrow framed black steel doors complement the natural oak frame perfectly. Clement were very professional, efficient and responsive throughout the whole project.”Photography: Joe Cotterill

SolarVision Lighting Technologies

ChallengeBewley Homes are a forward-thinking developer and pride themselves in their purse of sustainability. We worked with Bewley Homes PLC to select the right lighting at their head office in Baughurst, Hampshire. Set in a rural location, we had to be mindful of the impact the lighting would cause to the neighbouring environment, but still provide Bewley staff with a well lite car park. The car park was set away from the building and Bewley wanted to create a safer environment for their staff. With that in mind having already started using Solar Vision's Street lights on their developments, they now wanted to take a look at the Solar CCTV that Solar Vision had to offer.SolutionInstalling our ASTRAL lighting columns with built in dusk to dawn sensors and motion sensor, the lights are managed through the night to minimise lighting pollution. After installing Solar Columns in the staff car park, it was decided that they could kill two birds with one stone in as much they could trial the CCTV and enhance the security of the car park at the same time.OutcomeThe Bewley HQ car park is now a well-lit area with the added security of lighting and CCTV coverage.Organisation: Bewley HomesInstalled: LUNAR CCTV Columns & ASTRAL Lighting Columns & HELIA Lighting Bollards

Floor soundproofing for Phoenix House apartments, West London

Floor soundproofing for Phoenix House apartments, West London

Hush Acoustics

Hush Acoustics was tasked with providing an acoustic separating floor solution in an extensive material change of use project in Southall. Phoenix House was being converted by Vascroft Construction from an office building to residential flats, in a project which involved building into the basement, adding two floors and expanding at the rear. The development of 149 flats, each of which comprises 2 bedrooms, 1 ensuite, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen/living area, required an effective design for the separating floors to ensure they would be effectively soundproofed throughout across multiple different floor finishes. After assessing a number of floor construction materials, Hush Panel 28 floating floor panels were selected to meet the acoustic performance targets. Using this panel meant that throughout the bedrooms and living areas a simple underlay could be laid before the finished carpets or engineered timber floor were installed. Hush Panel 28 was also suitable for the floors in the wet rooms and entrance hallways by applying Detromat on top of the panel to form an anti cracking surface.A team of more than 100 operatives worked on site, with every 1000 sq. m of floor completed per week, which Hush Acoustics supported to ensure Vascroft could meet the project’s strict delivery schedule.

Cyclehoop doubles cycle parking provision at leading NHS Trust

Cyclehoop

Earlier this year we were extremely proud to transform the cycle parking provision for employees and visitors at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.Guy’s and St Thomas’ is one of the largest NHS trusts in England and they are true pioneers in health research with upwards of 500 studies currently running. The trust is renowned for high-quality teaching and education and manages community services across London.Cyclehoop worked in collaboration with TfL to radically update the parking provision for cyclists at the hospital, with the installation of 36 Jan Kuipers Two Tier Bike Racks. Cyclehoop is the official UK supplier of these Dutch Two Tier Racks. This particular product is ideal for areas tight on space as the tiered system means that less floor space is taken up in comparison to traditional racks. This renders the Two Tier the smart option for maximising cycle parking in confined spaces. The racks and the entire project received positive feedback. Sustainability Officer for the trust, Teresa Agudo, was very pleased with the delivery of the project, commenting:“Cyclehoop provided excellent customer service and were very flexible in terms of installation date. The design is really good too.”“Before this installation, there was limited parking facilities for visitors so this makes a huge impact as we have doubled cycle parking space.”

High Security Internal Cycle Store, Triton Square

The Bike Storage Company

1 Triton Square has undergone a comprehensive back-to-the-frame refurbishment and extension, providing a state-of-the-art prime headquarters office building located at the heart of the campus. It was completed to shell and core in 2021. During the design phase, we engaged the Bike Storage Company to assist in pursuing the BREEAM Outstanding status. Their involvement has been instrumental in establishing 1 Triton Square as one of the UK's leading sustainable HQs. We utilised our easy-to-use Two Tier Cycle Rack system to ensure the maximum amount of cycle storage with as little infrastructure and services as possible. Our expert design team was tasked with designing the layout of the internal cycle store, and we manufactured and installed the Two Tier Racks to house 532 cycles. Further, a high-security section of the store needed to be separated to provide parking for long-term and regular users and from the public-accessible cycle storage. We achieved this by installing our High-Security Anti-Climb Mesh Partitioning inside the store, which is accessible via a separate access-controlled entrance adjacent to the public entrance. Our High-Security Anti-Climb Mesh is a versatile security fencing or partitioning solution. We can install two—or three-meter-high panels and design and fit them around any terrain, ground height changes, or ceiling services, making it an excellent option where security is paramount.

Clement Windows Group

The buildings around Clerkenwell Green in London feature a mixture of architectural styles. The area is designated a Conservation Area and some properties are listed. During the nineteenth century it was a busy centre for specialised crafts and manufacture and the buildings at No 10-11 were originally constructed as warehouses. The Uniform Clothing & Equipment Company (Uniquip) occupied the two buildings from around 1910 to the 1990s and was a well known supplier of band uniforms.Stagg Architects obtained planning permission to refurbish and extend the original 13,000 sq ft building by an additional 7,000 sq ft. The renovated building comprises a new roof extension, flexible spaces on the ground and lower ground floors and offices at the upper levels.A four storey side extension infill was constructed and Clement Windows Group were selected to manufacture the new and replacement steel windows and doors throughout the building. It was very important that the new windows were in keeping with the original building and did not detract from the character and appearance of the surrounding Conservation Area and adjoining Listed Buildings.Windows and doors from the Clement EB20 steel window range were chosen and powder paint coated in black with the accompanying hinges and handles painted to match the frames. The huge wall of steel windows to the side of building includes a patterned glass which allows light to enter while also providing privacy for the neighbouring properties.Photographs taken by Matt Chisnall, @mattchisnall

Dublin Landings, Ireland - Pyroguard Protect

Pyroguard UK Ltd

The ChallengeAs part of this strategy, the decision was taken to replace a fully-glazed non-fire-rated internal atrium with a new, high-performance fire-rated solution to ensure the highest levels of fire protection.Spanning five storeys, the atrium would create a functional yet architecturally stunning light-filled centrepiece within the modern office space.Forming part of the broader regeneration of Dublin Landings, bringing this aspect of the project in on time would be critical. As a result, Walls to Workstations were tasked with removing and replacing the five-floor atrium in just six weeks to see the project through to completion. The SolutionWorking closely with W2W, Pyroguard supplied more than 500 square metres of toughened EI30 fire safety glass to the project. Equipping fabricators with the flexibility to deliver on ambitious architectural projects which require large expanses of glazing, Pyroguard toughened glass provides protection against flames, smoke and radiant heat and delivers impact classification of 1B1 to EN12600.Complementing modern architectural ambitions, the inclusion of large areas of toughened glazing within projects helps to safely incorporate natural light into buildings, something which is critical in renovation projects where buildings are being transformed from their original purpose. In practice, this sees spaces flooded with natural light, elevating levels of light transmission throughout a building and having a positive impact on occupants’ wellbeing – crucial in delivering functional and inspiring workspaces.

Project DetailsSystem: INTRAflex XT ♻️ and INTRAflex SPSpecification: Black anodised INTRAflex XT and INTRAflex SP with Elite Black 608 insertsClient: 70 Wilson StreetInstaller: SDS MattingSpecifier: Minife ArchitectsLocation: LondonStepping Out of Line for Creative ImpactWhen Minife Architects refurbished 70 Wilson Street, they chose INTRAflex to continue their linear design aesthetic through the Entrance Matting. The striking, striped design, makes a design statement while meeting the advisable depth of 3m for effective Entrance Matting. INTRAflex XT covers the whole of zone 2 while inset sections of our INTRAflex SP feature in zone 3. Fine Design to Protect Fine FinishesMinife works with INTRAsystems on various projects and knows how best to apply Entrance Matting in creative ways. The design helps remove dirt and absorb moisture efficiently through the revolving and pass door within the first 12m2 section of matting. The subsequent area of inset sections provides extra visual impacts and removes more dirt. This not only reduces slip risk but protects onward flooring - important for six storeys of offices and a reception with oak herringbone parquet and Senso resin floor beyond. Striking and SustainableSustainability is a key part of Minife's design. The building is rated as BREEAM Excellent and billed as a low carbon workplace that even has its own bee hives on the roof! They chose natural materials, net zero and low-impact products throughout the building. So, our INTRAflex EPD helped inform their carbon calculations and specification choices. The linear, fluted and vertical lines inside and out reflect in the Entrance Matting and the attention to detail is impeccable. Minife specified the black anodised finish along with Elite Black 608 fibres to match the black glazing and interior design details. Engineered for Ease and EnduranceMinife picked INTRAflex because it offers easier maintenance and longevity. The plank system is laid in 'lanes' so you can replace each interlocking section to minimise waste or disruption. Depending on wear, you can even swap sections around to extend their lifespan. We provide a 10-year warranty but expect it to last much longer with an effective cleaning regime in this type of environment. You can also cut the planks to shape easily, for quicker and easier installation. Making them more adaptable for a variety of design forms, or neatly fitting around tricky nooks and crannies. Flexible Design ChoicesINTRAflex XT lends itself particularly well to inset designs because each individual unit within the plank system co-ordinated with products using the same aluminium profile. You can see other examples of its creative use in Newgate Street and The Plimsoll Building. INTRAflex is a heavy-duty system suitable for high and heavy traffic locations, so it's equally up to the task in transport hubs as commercial offices. With an open or closed construction, it is also suitable for internal or external use depending on the inserts you choose.

Quiet Mark certification for Rockfon’s acoustic ceilings

Rockfon

Being in an overtly-loud space – whether it’s in a restaurant, an office, a gym or anywhere else – is really irritating, right? You’d be reluctant to go back or never return again. Maybe at home, the marble top counter in the kitchen wasn’t the best idea for open plan living, but you’re stuck with it. Or are you?  Rockfon is proud to announce it has been awarded the industry-leading Quiet Mark certification for its Mono Acoustic, Blanka and Color-all acoustic ceiling tile ranges which will help solve these excessive noise issues, and they will look amazing. https://www.quietmark.com/brands/rockfon Here we have a beautiful range of colours and styles that allow you to get as creative - or discreet - as you like with your acoustic ceiling and they all have built-in Class A sound absorption from the stone wool core.   Rockfon is one of a growing number of building material manufacturers to have its products assessed by Quiet Mark. Nigel Watkins, Country Director at Rockfon UK & Ireland, explains why: “Rockfon has been an expert in acoustics for over 60 years, but we understand very well that acoustics can be complex. Quiet Mark certification is a short cut for saying “this product is going to help make your space quieter.” Rockfon Mono Acoustic is a seamless acoustic ceiling. It is often used discreetly in residential properties, heritage projects or offices where it looks like a smooth plasterboard finish, but it has Class A sound absorption. But Mono Acoustic has allowed the imaginations of some architects to run riot, creating big geometric shapes or curves on walls and ceilings, to create Instagrammable moments for their clients in restaurants, shops and public spaces. Not all acoustic suspended ceilings are white. There are 34 contemporary colours in the Rockfon Color-all range which has been curated by Interior Designer, Sara Garanty, chosen to reflect nature’s colours.  The tiles – which come with a matching grid – provide great opportunities for zoning different areas, depending on how you want to make people feel. Greens are relaxing, blues encourage us to think outside the box and be creative, yellows are uplifting, creams and browns feel cosy, and so on. These tones are designed to bring acoustic and visual comfort to interiors, to enhance well-being Quiet Mark is an independent global certification programme associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation. Its international award programme recognises excellence in low-noise products, technology and solutions to unwanted noise. Poppy Szkiler, chief executive and co-founder of Quiet Mark, said: “Because sound is invisible, it is often overlooked. Yet the fundamental impact it has on all the physical rhythms of our bodies, our hormones, heart rate and brain waves, is so profound and inherent to our wellbeing, and therefore also to the design process of the buildings we live in.” “Quiet Mark and our expert team of acousticians are delighted to approve and certify three beautiful acoustic ceiling products by industry leaders, Rockfon, whose vast selection of edge designs, dimensions, colours and shapes help architects create spaces that people can enjoy with their eyes and their ears”.

Reducing reverberation within healthcare facility's meeting rooms, London

Hush Acoustics

Optimising acoustic comfort within radiology facility, LondonHush Acoustics transformed the acoustic environment within a radiology facility where staff and clients experiencing noise nuisance within both a boardroom and video conferencing room, which was noticeably affecting speech clarity.Renowned as specialist consultants throughout the UK, Australia and further afield, offering 24-hour radiology reporting, Everlight Radiology offers urgent after hours and daytime consultant radiologists to hospitals throughout the world. Hence, it was imperative that their rooms were treated quickly in order for the practice to continue with their duty of care and excellent service. After considering printed acoustic boards from another supplier, which would have offered Class C absorption, Everlight’s chief executive officer contacted Hush to gain more specialist advice on sound absorption.Upon a visit to the Everlight Office, we found the rooms to be suffering from very high levels of reverberation and echo noise. Through our professional and technical advice, along with carrying out an acoustic assessment, we presented the client with a recommended solution based around Hush Absorber Panels 50 & 50A panels. The reason for including the Hush Absorber 50A panel in the specification was because it was imperative for the ceilings to be treated in order to get the sound result that our client was anticipating.Faced with a vast array of asymmetrical ventilation ducts and lights on the ceilings in the rooms in question, additional consideration was needed regarding the placement of the acoustic panels. A plan was drawn up to give possible layout options, which were agreed by the client.Unlike the client’s initial consideration prior to contacting Hush, Hush Absorber Panels are Class A absorbers, made from fabric wrapped 50mm thick acoustic foam. They have built in support frames to allow for bracket fixing, to provide an air void behind the absorber for enhanced acoustic performance. Class A absorption is of the highest level, with Class E being the lowest and this scale ensures simple comparison between acoustic products, which is important when choosing the right product for maximum impact on sound reduction and speech clarity.Included in the client’s brief was a request for particular panels to be printed. The client wanted to incorporate their brand logo and hero statements, intended to remind their clients and staff members using the room of their key messaging and values. The pictures supplied to Hush were designed in-house and delivered in high resolution which ensured an outstanding result. The client expressed interest in having larger boards for the video conferencing room to the bespoke sizing of 2050 x 1300 x 50mm. These panels were made to order, and provided in colours Chrome and Smoke, which were then organised in a checked pattern on the ceiling. Hush 50A Absorber Panels were installed using suspension packs, which allows for the air void behind, whereas the Hush Absorber 50 Panels were installed using the Hush Absorber Adhesive, making them clean and easy to install. The client was delighted with the finished result, not only in terms of practically and the acoustic improvements but aesthetically too. The colours chosen along with the custom printing reflects the business looking smart, clean and contemporary and resolves the reverberation issues that they were originally facing.
