Perched on an elevated plane above the tranquil Suffolk village of Rattlesden, Rising Sun Hill is a bespoke residential housing development that seeks to blend in with its surroundings while standing out among other new builds for its character.The 22 homes include eight that will be offered as affordable housing. Individually conceptualised, the homes feature finishes that draw on traditional materials and designs, such as weatherboarding and rendering. To reflect the space of the surrounding countryside, the homes (which range from 2-4 bedrooms) are roomy, both inside and out. Large, landscaped gardens, stone paths, patios and generous planting of shrubs and trees complete the idyllic setting.But attention to detail hasn’t just been dedicated to aesthetics. Consideration has also been given to the homes’ long-term sustainability, with each home being fitted with an air source heat pump and well-designed insulation.The very fabric of the buildings, from the blockwork to the timber frame, has been scrutinised too. For developer Hartog Hutton, it was just as important to use high-quality materials as it was to give each building its own individual flair.

Built on a largely derelict gap site, The Works is a development of 34 two-bedroomed apartments in the popular Yorkhill / Finnieston area of Glasgow, offering panoramic views over the city and the River Clyde. To accommodate the site’s slope, the development comprises a four-storey north side and a six-story south side.The development had to overcome a number of issues, including planning issues around daylighting and massing, and the challenge of building immediately adjacent to the Yorkhill railway tunnel.PROJECT INFOThe Works provides residents with off-street parking and use of a large communal garden, with ground floor properties having private rear gardens. Design emphasis is on open-plan layouts and generous room sizes. To take advantage of the views, the apartments feature south-facing and Juliet-style balconies.Ecostock Belgravia Gault Blend was selected to meet the requirements of both the client and planning for a high quality, light buff brick with grey tones that would match the surrounding buff sandstone tenements. The sustainability credentials and technical performance of Ecostock, with its low water absorption suiting the wet weather typical of the west of Scotland’s, also contributed to the selection decision.

Developed by Willmott Dixon and designed by Corstorphine & Wright as part of Devon & Cornwall’s Police and Crime transformation plan, this state-of-the-art police centre and operational hub is the base for up to 450 officers across the area. The project was developed with the intent to improve custody areas for detainees and provide a comfortable, modern working facility for its staff. During the development of the project, suggestions were taken from custody sergeants to help create a better space for staff and detainees.To provide the facilities necessary for 21st-century policing, attention was paid to integrating assets such as a virtual court system, and technology to monitor the health of vulnerable detainees and allow for crisp, modern meeting spaces that cater for a multitude of police functions.Local suppliers were engaged with the project and through training schemes, the project has been able to offer valuable experience to apprentices. Utilising 314sqm of Solar panels also means this build generates a substantial amount of green energy.Blockleys Synthesis S14 was used to create a strong, dark belt around the building which then blends smoothly into vertical strips of glass and contrasting white facades.

Founded in Blackburn in 1919, the Bowker Group has grown rapidly, diversifying in 1984 into the retail motor trade and developing a reputation for the higheset levels of service and an innovative approach to transport needs. They contacted us in June 2015, looking for a shelter solution to make the most of an outdoor sales area for their range of BMW motorbikes (Bowker Motorrad) at their brand new dealership in Preston, Lancashire. We were recommended to them by an architect’s practice in the city.

Refurbishment of the walkways was required as part of a wider upgrade programme delivered by main contractor, Thomas Sinden. The existing asphalt covering had been damaged and the resulting water ingress was not only causing leaks into the properties below but was also compromising the building fabric with signs of damp in the external walls. The project had to be carried out while the apartments remained occupied so it required a solution that could be installed quickly with minimum disruption to residents and excellent performance over an extended service life.

Newton is proud to contribute to the transformation of the unique, Grade 1 listed Cambridge House in Piccadilly as it undergoes conversion into one of London's grandest hotels. The 18,000m2 scheme includes six adjacent Grade 2 listed residences, whilst a four-level basement will accommodate a spa as well as the back-of-house and servicing areas. In order to deliver a reliable, watertight solution for this £165m project, Newton worked closely with architects PDP London and leading enabling works contractor Deconstruct UK throughout the design and installation.

Billed as the 'UK's happiest office' this 91,000 sq ft building is home to the telephone answering service; Moneypenny. Planet won the project after impressing AEW Architects with stylish and cost effective products. FireStop doors were installed to compliment the earthy tones and playful 'outdoors' theme of the office design. For the meeting rooms and office partitioning, Planet's p20 slimline glass partitioning was used along with full height glass swing doors to maximise the light and airy feel of the the office and atrium areas.

The client was keen to use the Timber Support Pedestals at their project in South West London. The main challenge was not just the complex shape and pitch of the terrace but also the fact that the completion date was a mere 5 days away. In one day our customer service department helped them choose the correct products and sizes; produced a drawing and estimate for the client; then dispatched the goods the same day for delivery to site the following morning. The contractor was able to complete the project on time and without penalty.

Buzon UK supplied and installed the DPH pedestal range for the composite decking and paving to many of the terraces and balconies across the 14 separate apartment buildings. The DPH pedestal system is perfect for use at roof level as they allow for 5% slope correction and can accommodate a range of services beneath floor level as well as giving excellent drainage.

As a charity Wiltshire Air Ambulance have a set of core values which they abide by, one of which is the planet; They are a responsible charity and make a difference by using local companies and where possible sourcing recycled and sustainable materials. They looked to danfloor to supply their Eco Weave Tile for the development.

Bolton Gate’s Superior folding shutters have been specified and used on over 100 Fire Stations in Hong Kong & Macau, the latest being the station built to service the infrastructure associated with the new Hong Kong–Zhuhai-Macau bridge, the longest sea-bridge in the world. The doors are designed to meet an onerous specification including typhoon loads up to 3kPa and fast operating speeds (approximately 700mm per second). They are designed and manufactured in the UK and shipped to Hong Kong.

Scotland’s biggest building services contractor has just completed upgrading the fire compartmentation within an existing West Lothian warehouse building which is being converted to serve as high bay storage facility to support the organisation’s existing distribution facility elsewhere in West Lothian and is, for the first time, making use of products from the range of TBA FIREFLY™, including APOLLO Lite™ 30:30 to create new fire barriers together with TBA’s expert advice and installer training.

Design studio Dual Works were commissioned by UK-based Sense Charity to design, make and install a suite of tailor-made furniture to transform three spaces into distinct environments for the different services that Sense offers to support its community. The project involved furniture with multiple approaches in terms of their use and functionality alongside a cohesive visual identity. Dual Works worked with each team to determine their priorities which has resulted in a playful children’s area, a professional workspace and a creative studio.

Within an educational environment, natural light creates a comfortable space which can have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of students and staff. When the existing bitumen roof at East Preston Infant School came to the end of its service life, naturally the decision was made to replace the existing roof and upgrade the rooflights. Kingspan Light + Air introduced 23 Kingspan Classic Skylight Domes into the building enabling the school to embrace natural light, ventilation and smoke management performance benefits.

9 of Howe Green’s 5000 Series floor access covers were specified for Hotel Du Vin’s French Bistro in Cambridge, the 9th in its UK chain and the first with an open view style kitchen. The requirement was for an access solution that would ensure that essential services were hidden from public view but that they could be easily and quickly accessed for maintenance or repairs. The 5000 Series blend seamlessly with the flooring and are perfectly flush with their surrounding helping to prevent any slips or trips, ideal for a busy kitchen.

GRAHAM construction specified a number of Howe Green’s 5000 Series Floor Access Covers for the £19 million refurbishment of Lews Castle. The light duty aluminium covers were specified to provide access to underfloor services, located within the corridors on the first floor of the castle. The covers were specified with a brass edge, giving a high level of aesthetic appeal, and then infilled with carpet or ceramic tiles depending on their location. The brass show edge is continuously secured which means there are no fasteners to rust or break.

On a secluded 150-acre estate in Northumberland sits Charlton Hall, a speakeasy wedding and private party venue with beautiful views looking out over the coast. Shaun Baston from Total Flooring said: “Karndean is an ideal product for any floor space especially as there is no limit to the design possibilities, so I would recommend it to anyone. Even if the fitter doesn’t have time to hand cut intricate designs, Karndean offer an in-house laser cutting service for bespoke designs.”

Metropolitan Works is London’s first Creative Industries Centre, offering digital manufacturing services, IT suites, training and workspace to local creative businesses and designers. Echoing the form-making processes undertaken at the Centre, the building was conceived as a series of interlocking volumes unified with a perforated aluminium cladding. On the ground floor level, a dramatic frieze by local artist Tom Price has been laser cut into the Ash & Lacy anodized aluminium panels to give the facade a sense of movement and life.

Situated in the picturesque village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, the Cistercian abbey is one of the most historic monastic ruins in Wales. In 2013 work started at the abbey to replace the roof of the gift shop, which had exceeded its serviceable life. The brief for this project was to not only repair the failing roof, but to bring the abbey to the forefront of modern-day roofing technology with the installation of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) system. ChallengeThe much acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid created the design for the Riverside Museum, which has already been dubbed ‘Glasgow’s Guggenheim’.The new riverside Museum provides an exciting new home for Glasgow’s transport collection. The development has a riverside location on a site where the River Clyde meets Glasgow’s other main river the Kelvin, and is adjacent to Glasgow Harbour.The dynamic new Riverside Museum displays Glasgow’s rich industrial heritage, which stems from the River Clyde. The Tall Ship is berthed alongside the Museum, creating a fantastic experience in this stunning setting.The brief for design and build roofing specialist Varla (UK) Limited was to find a flexible insulation that could meet the demanding U - value of 0.20 W/m2K that was continuous over both the walls and the complex 18,000 square metre roof. The Glasgow Museum of Transport is a complex, heavily engineered design and was the first major UK project for the renowned architect Zaha Hadid.Specialist Roofing contractor, Varla (UK) Limited started the search for a suitable material by contacting many insulation suppliers and holding supplier seminars at Varla’s Chester offices, challenging suppliers to propose a solution to meet the demanding specification for this unique project.SolutionVarla (UK) Limited chose to use Knauf Insulation’s FactoryClad Roll 32, a flexible insulation that meets the demanding U-value of 0.20 W/m2K across both the roof and walls.Rigid foam boards were ruled out early on, as they could not be fitted to the building’s complex curves. There was also a limited cladding zone that could not be altered. Many types of insulation were considered, but glass mineral wool roll provided the best thermal efficiency. The key to Knauf Insulation’s products being specified on this project was its ability to provide in-depth technical support, including complex three-dimensional heat flow modelling calculations. This allowed Knauf Insulation to produce a solution that met all of Varla’s insulation requirements by using a double layer of 100mm Knauf Insulation FactoryClad Roll 32. This is a flexible, lightweight roll of resilient Glass Mineral Wool with exceptionally high tear strength and a thermal conductivity of just 0.032 W/mK.In addition, Knauf Insulation FactoryClad Roll 32 is ideal for limiting the spread of fire since it holds a Euroclass A1 reaction to fire classification for non-combustibility and will not burn. Nor will it give off toxic smoke or suddenly ignite in a fire due to ‘flashover’. For public buildings such as this, superior fire performance is crucial.Once Varla (UK) Limited had decided on Knauf Insulation, it leaned on them heavily for technical support, utilising the unique 3D heat loss calculation support service, which ensured the correct product thickness was specified to meet the demanding project requirements.

The roofs of The Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council offices had fallen into a poor condition and a large amount of standing water was threatening to leak into the offices below. With the office roof areas in such a poor state, the council turned to Polyroof to refurbish nearly 1,000 square metres of roof, split into 13 areas, before they fell into a further state of disrepair. DTL Construction, a local Polyroof Approved Contractor, were tasked with installing the Protec System, removing the issue of standing water and giving the roof a long service life, whilst giving the council peace of mind that leaks would not pose an issue in future.The standing water was cleared before the existing roof materials were stripped back in order to install the new system. This allowed a new warm-roof system to be installed, along with new cut-to-falls insulation. Polyroof’s Protec Cut-to-Falls insulation is an innovative two-layer system which doesn’t only improve thermal performance, it also directs standing water away from the roof.Following this, the BBA-approved Protec system was used to seamlessly waterproof the entirety of the office roofs. The system, once inspected by Polyropof’s Technical Services team, was issued with a 20-year guarantee, so the client could now have reassurance their roof would last for decades to come.

Earlier this year we were extremely proud to transform the cycle parking provision for employees and visitors at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.Guy’s and St Thomas’ is one of the largest NHS trusts in England and they are true pioneers in health research with upwards of 500 studies currently running. The trust is renowned for high-quality teaching and education and manages community services across London.Cyclehoop worked in collaboration with TfL to radically update the parking provision for cyclists at the hospital, with the installation of 36 Jan Kuipers Two Tier Bike Racks. Cyclehoop is the official UK supplier of these Dutch Two Tier Racks. This particular product is ideal for areas tight on space as the tiered system means that less floor space is taken up in comparison to traditional racks. This renders the Two Tier the smart option for maximising cycle parking in confined spaces.The racks and the entire project received positive feedback. Sustainability Officer for the trust, Teresa Agudo, was very pleased with the delivery of the project, commenting:“Cyclehoop provided excellent customer service and were very flexible in terms of installation date. Specialist refurbishment and planned works contractor AYM Contracting approached EnviroBuild to supply adjustable decking joist supports for a commercial project near Liverpool Street in the heart of London.The 40 m² rooftop office terrace needed a low-maintenance, durable substructure to safely support Hyperion composite deck boards, so it was decided that MESA Support pedestals would be the best product to achieve this.The SolutionWorking with award-winning international construction services company ISG, EnviroBuild fulfilled the order for over 100 MESA support decking feet. Based on an aggregation of ratings across all of the core services provided from the hospital, the hospital has been rated by Care Quality Commission as ‘Outstanding’.Architect – Hunters ArchitectsProduct – SL500 bi-parting doors in slim-eco profiles with fixed side screens of up to 8 panels covering 6.7m on 4 separate bays.The works encompass a full ward refurbishment comprising of layout changes, floor, wall and ceiling finishes, sanitary appliances, mechanical and electrical installations, fixtures and fittings renewal and internal doors.Working alongside the project lead architect, we assisted with the design to create 4 new ward entrance screens, to assist with reducing noise and air pollution, creating a more welcoming and comfortable patient environment. Our slim-eco door profiles were chosen and also provided with our unique TightSeal system, minimising any gaps around the doors. In addition to the door profiles, directional activation units were installed, contributing even further to eliminate unnecessary opening cycles. 

An entrance that needed reviving and improved functionGeorge Eliot Hospital is based in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. It provides a full range of emergency and elective medical services to the local area, including maternity services.Project Year: 2022Product: UniturnProject Background: We were contacted directly from the hospital’s Estates Department to review an existing traditional sliding door entrance, with a view to proposing a solution to upgrade to a high capacity revolving door. An important need was to improve the temperature in the reception area, enabling climate control.The existing entrance lobby was too narrow to accommodate both the revolving door and necessary adjacent pass doors to meet Equal Access requirements and so we had to come up with a different solution.Solution: To overcome the narrow lobby entrance we proposed to locate the revolving door in front of the existing lobby’s footprint, which in turn required the building’s foundation slab to be extended under the revolving door location.This solution required detailed technical and design input from FES to the client’s nominated building contractor and design team to ensure that the build was both structurally sound, aesthetically pleasing and met the relevant building regulations.The Uniturn has improved accessibility in and out of the hospital and has provided energy savings and temperature control, resulting in a successful project.

Originally a commercial office block, it’s position adjacent to both Crossrail and TFL red routes meant it was a prime candidate for conversion to desirable one and two bedroom apartments.The refurbishment works consisted of extending 4 stories including structural strengthening and new envelope to incorporate full fit-out of 122 residential units and 3 retail areas.As part of the conversion, main contractor John Paul Construction, required the expert installation of around 10,000 m2 of acoustic flooring to achieve Approved Document E Building regulations. As part of the acoustic flooring package, Soundis value engineering option of Soundis 10mm Acoustic Cradles, Base Pads, Riser Stackers and 18mm P5 T&G chipboard was selected. Our Cradle and Risers are manufactured from 100% recycled materials assisting to the sustainability targets of projects. An acoustic cradle and batten system was chosen, to level out floor imperfections and to minimise impact noise from passing footfall. Airborne wasn’t so much of a concern in this build due to the high mass concrete subfloor.
