Gary Lambert of Broadstairs-based Complete Roofing chose Rhepanol fk single ply membrane to waterproof the 690 m2 two-tier curved roof of celebrity restaurant Rock Salt, which overlooks Folkestone harbour.

Situated in the picturesque village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, the Cistercian abbey is one of the most historic monastic ruins in Wales. In 2013 work started at the abbey to replace the roof of the gift shop, which had exceeded its serviceable life. The brief for this project was to not only repair the failing roof, but to bring the abbey to the forefront of modern-day roofing technology with the installation of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) system. Given these requirements, BauderSOLAR’s innovative PV solution, SOLfixx Plus, was a natural choice.

The roof area was badly damaged by heavy storms, with all existing ballasted solar panels lifting off the single ply roof and destroyed beyond repair. The client needed the remedial work completed to fixed deadlines in order to comply with insurance requirements, and wanted to optimise the roof by replacing the pre-existing photovoltaic (PV) array with a solar solution that would deliver superior energy generation. The office also had to remain operational throughout the works, creating logistical challenges

Bilco UK has supplied an innovative replacement roof hatch for a medieval church in Norfolk. St Mary’s is one of the 653 churches within the Diocese of Norwich. When it came to providing a means of safe access to the roof area a product was required that was both technically and architecturally suitable. Medieval Masonry Ltd, a specialist contractor in the restoration and conservation of historic buildings with over 50 years of experience in the industry, installed Bilco UK’s S-50VMTB VersaMount® Replacement Roof Hatch.

Fairford School was refurbished in 2008 and required a roofing system that could offer unsurpassed durability complimenting the honey coloured brick walls.Metrotile’s .900mm Slate profile in Bronze was specified, as it is the only system that could meet all of the project’s demands. The school’s new Metrotile Slate roof delivered on all counts including performance, durability, low whole-life cost and aesthetics. As Fairford is situated in a rural setting, the aesthetics of the building’s roof needed to compliment the natural surroundings.

The National Gallery and the Science Museum - two of London’s major and iconic visitor attractions built more than 150 years ago – required an extensive programme of roof upgrades and maintenance. Hush Acoustics were tasked with providing a solution to reduce an impact noise issue on the upper floor of a luxury five-bedroom detached home in Knutsford, Cheshire.Home to a professional football player, the issue stemmed from the noise on the flooring of his snooker room. Impact noise from footsteps when using the room was generating nuisance noise within the living area directly below, which was making it difficult for others in the family to enjoy this space.Working with Short Construction, building contractors based in Wilmslow, Hush supplied 167x sheets of our Hush Panel 33 to solve the issue. This is a versatile, high performing acoustic flooring which is widely used in timber construction, making it ideal for the timber separating floors in this property.With a combination of our eco-friendly acoustic felt and our rubber barrier mat, the Hush Panel 33 performs to all UK Building Regulation requirements as well as the Robust Detail performance targets for timber frame developments. Its unique composition makes it easy to install and quick to use.The product works by creating a high mass barrier and isolating the floor finish from the structure. As the nuisance noise issue in this situation was due to impact noise, it was key to introduce a high performing acoustic floor product to break the connection of the floor finish from the structure. This, in turn, improved the impact performance of noise transmission through the floor structure, giving the client the desired effect and enabling him to use the snooker room as intended.

With a mix of new-build waterproofing requirements and existing roof refurbishments, the client appointed Garland UK as a roofing partner across the multi-building site. Low environmental impact... CHALLENGE All over the world architects and building owners are trying to create buildings with a low environmental impact. For this private house, the architect wanted to combine an aesthetical finish of a metal roof in combination with PV and hot water panels. The biggest issue for the architect was the fixing of these panels without having leak problems in the future. SOLUTION The roof was waterproofed using a RENOLIT ALKORPLAN roofing membrane that is mechanically fastened onto the supporting roof structure. Two kinds of PVC profiles were heat welded onto the waterproofing membrane: on the one hand RENOLIT ALKORDESIGN profiles (for aesthetical value only), on the other hand there are RENOLIT ALKORSOLAR profiles, which function as the base to attach the hot water and the PV panels. The gable was also finished with the RENOLIT ALKORDESIGN system.

A beautiful timber frame house, made of Western Red Cedar based in Kings Langley. Kings Langley, Hertfordshire is the birthplace of Ovaltine, the soothing malt drink. The village is divided by the River Gade and endowed with a couple of beautiful lakes.It is here, at one of these lakes, that a charming timber garden house is fitted with beautiful wooden louvres. By Sunshield, in collaboration with Contrasol. We were delighted to assist the owners with custom made external louvres to provide the a much needed perfect solution to reduce glare. Our client is sensitive to light and needed an effective shading product to specifically reduce sunlight entering the internal space.Our client was looking for something to be able to control light as well as a solution to fully block out light at night. The windows are South facing; therefore the louvres were also perfect for shading purposes and heat reduction.The Sunshield team applied the popular 98W which is made from Western Red Cedar to compliment the overall building.

The battens consist of a layer of recycled, low resonance, open cell, flexible polyurethane foam bonded to an FSC/PEFC certified timber batten.Turnbull Homes were supplied 500m² of Cellecta products for this development in Epsom.

Mrs Ballard has recently undertaken an extensive refurbishment and extension project at her traditional 1890s Hertfordshire farmhouse.Replacing the original windows at the front of the home as well as specifying new timber sash windows for the new extension, a stunning new front door was also included as part of the project. Mrs Ballard chose a stunning ‘Lydford’ timber front door from the Dale Joinery range, finished in the shade of ‘Chrome Green’.To complete the look at the front of her home, PVD Stainless Polished Brass door hardware from the Coastal range were specified, including the DKB192 Doctor’s Front Door Knocker, REG090 Regent Lever Door Handle and LP400 Sleeved Letter Plate. The PVD Polished Brass finish was the perfect, complementary choice to the dark green finish of the door, and suits the traditional façade.The new front door really is a statement piece, and has added an extra level of beauty to this stunning countryside property.

Radii create a bespoke glass partition system design for BCG Digital Ventures, with new dies manufactured especially for the project at our in-house manufacturing facilities.Previously, Radii had worked at 80 Charlotte Street for BCG to produce a stunning timber-framed partition system across 257 meeting rooms and offices in the floors directly above the Digital Ventures site. This new installation was designed to match our original work for BCG and create a synergy throughout the space — but with aluminium framework used in place of timber.The final installation used 100mm wide single glazed partitions and joinery with consistent mullion details. Furthermore, bespoke dies were also created for black powder coated aluminium light portals that were installed around some partitioning elements with integrated LED lighting.Radii also provided some fire rated glazing from the FirePro range, certified up to Ei120 rating for screens and Ei90 for doors.

A bespoke side sliding sectional garage door by Rundum Meir provides a blend of aesthetics and modern functionality in a Victorian house renovation project. The 19 ft x 12 ft garage has been transformed into a quality working space equipped and finished exquisitely, allowing for use as a utility area or office as well as a vehicular. A clear 2900mm span is provided by a sliding sectional garage door. Hand crafted using knot-free Spruce, this bespoke timber door in RAL 6021 Pale Green is fully automated with insulation between the five solid double skinned timber panels.With one third obscure glazing, the door allows for plenty of natural light to enter the garage. The design of the garage door panels and the cross styles in the window were the customer’s wish to satisfy the local conservation area requirements. It is the perfect example of the role a Rundum Meir garage door can play in transforming a garage to give it new purpose and flexibility.

The area of Bermondsey Spa in South London was a vast development project in 2017 and 2018, the Bermondsey Square Hotel being a focal point of the area. As well as assisting with various applications for the projects, Fixfast helped with site visits and rainwater calculations to ascertain the needed level of roof drainage. The Housing Trust’s first encounter with Metrotile Lightweight Steel Roof Systems was during a refurbishment project at Pendle House, Denton. Financed by county council capital funds, Northamptonshire County Council undertook a multi-million pound remedial works programme on a number of schools originally built in the 1960’s and 1970’s. All of the buildings were suffering from some degree of water ingress, and the roofs needed to be brought in line with current building regulations for improved thermal performance. The Joseph Black Building, found in the King’s Buildings Campus at the University of Edinburgh, houses the School of Chemistry and is one of the oldest buildings on the campus. But its existing copper roof covering had come to the end of its natural life. Sika Sarnafil’s flagship Sarnafil Plus refurbishment offer was the perfect solution for this project. Sika Sarnafil Membrane S327-15EL in Patina Green was chosen to replace the old roof covering, as the local authority planning department advised that this product was an acceptable replacement for the original copper roofs on the listed building.

Established in 1976, Corfe Hills School in Dorset welcomes over 800 secondary and sixth form students through their gates each year. Since achieving Academy status in 2011, Corfe Hills have been looking ahead, keen to develop a schedule of works for building improvements that support the school’s growth and ultimately safeguard the building’s future.Over time, the existing roofs across the site had experienced continuous water ingress issues that needed to be addressed. Multiple roof penetrations from the roof lights were leaking water; the existing waterproofing system and the overlaid bituminous membrane were failing in places resulting in splits and blistering, and the metal roof had rusted beyond repair. With rain seeping directly into the classrooms below, action had to be taken to ensure the site was remedied to a safe and comfortable learning environment for students and staff.Garland Technical Manager, Paul Boole, was instructed by building surveying firm Kendall Kingscott to support Corfe Hills approaching CIF bid for the critical roof refurbishment works. An essential part of the brief was to ensure that the buildings were not only fully waterproofed but to upgrade the overall thermal efficiency, alongside securing a robust 20-year guarantee.In support of the CIF bid, Paul carried out a thorough investigation of the school’s roof assets for Kendall Kingscott, producing core sampling data, detailed condition surveys and U-Value calculations to outline a clear specification for the works required.

The proposed developments followed traditional timber kit design, consisting of an outer brick skin 50mm cavity, with an internal 140mm stud frame, and using mineral wool insulation minimum 20mm service void, finished with a plasterboard lining. This project featured the Aquamodul warm blue roof, one of the largest schemes of its kind ever achieved within the capital.ChallengesThe project presented significant challenges, such as demanding thermal performance criteria combined with a challenging planning requirement to achieve maximum outflow rain water run off rates of 10l/s across the entire 7500m2 site.SolutionsThe design and implementation of a site wide blue roof ensures the development’s contribution to mitigating flood risk in London and supports the protection of England’s waterways. Modelled over a 300 year period, the blue roof design is future proofed in terms of its provision for likely climate change and increases in predicted peak rainfall events.Second generation hot melt structural waterproofing system, Wilotekt-Plus, was installed as the Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL), which provided an extremely robust waterproof structure during the external envelope and superstructure construction phase. Hytherm ADH thermal insulation and BBA accredited Force Dalle bitumen membranes with anti-root technology where later installed to complete the waterproofing and insulation system.Prior to hand over and installation of the Aquamodul blue roof attenuation cell, the waterproofing system was integrity tested using a differential pressure testing method by independent specialists to ensure the roof was watertight.
