Over 266m2 of framed panels of Terra-34, which is a grating which conforms to anti-climb guidelines, were made to cover the south, east and west elevations. These were fabricated in 16 different sizes up to 2.5m high and 1m wide and fixed to the structural framework with custom welded plates. Access through the east elevation was provided by a very large double-leaf gate to allow for the removal of large sculptures and installations. The gate was made out of six separate panels within each leaf for an overall size of 4.6x5.3m (hxw).

Emrys Architects were appointed by Berners & Wells to design this mixed-use development located north of Oxford Street in central London. The building sits across 2 different streets, the lower two floors accommodate flexible retail and restaurant space and the upper floors high end office space.The building has been designed to respond to the historic Character of the local area, some areas were partially demolished while the Edwardian facade on Wells Street was retained, repaired and extended. Portland stone and teal glazed-brick detail was used to create seven two-storey high arches showcasing the grand entrances to the offices and retail units.The ironmongery brief centred around replicating the arches present in both the external entrances and the courtyard, this distinctive shape was also used in the vision panels on a number of internal doors. To fulfil this brief, we worked closely with the architect to design and manufacture bespoke arched push plates in Flat Matt Black(FMB). Where required these were paired with complimentary D-shaped pull handles and simple accessories finished to match. All other ironmongery was finished in FMB including hinges, door closers, signage and accessories.Photography: Neil Kenyon

One area of the company’s new Singapore facility is a high bay warehouse that required an automatic natural and smoke ventilation system to meet fire safety regulations.Project SolutionWall Opensky natural and smoke ventilators were specified to help to protect Pepperl + Fuchs’ new HQ and logistics centre in Singapore. Powrmatic Partners INNIVATE, therefore, proposed a solution using low-level inlet ventilators on two walls with exhaust ventilators at a high level on the same walls. In all, 36 Powrmatic Opensky ventilators have been supplied for the project – 18 on each wall divided into nine at the low level and nine at the high level.Project ResultAll of the smoke ventilators are fitted with 24 V DC actuators and grouped to operate simultaneously in the event of the fire alarm system being activated. 150m2 of Oranit Shiluvit panels in Poplar were used to clad the walls and ceiling of the multi-use event space, the Pickle Factory in East London.Part of the larger Oval Space group, the pickle factory is an ex-industrial unit in Tower Hamlets designed for more intimate live music and acoustic events and has hosted corporate events for companies including Google, Forza, and Joypad.The natural finish Poplar timber Shiluvit panels are also in keeping with the versatility of the space.

This saw a requirement for an update to their existing washroom facilities, with a need for stylish yet hardwearing washroom systems.Award toilet cubicles were specified in High Pressure Laminate (HPL) in our popular Noir finish, for a timeless look. Thanks to its scratch and heatproof properties, HPL is a well suited material for busy washrooms such as those at Microsoft Campus. Waterproofing design is a key and critical component for successful construction of below ground structures. Whether it’s a completely new build or making smaller changes to an existing property, waterproofing design should never be overlooked.Waterproofing might account for just a small fraction of a building’s total cost, but waterproofing defects can result in catastrophic consequences. When waterproofing fails, the implications are significant.Delta’s MD, Kevin Dodds was approached to offer advice and guidance on a failed waterproofing system.The existing structure had an impressive 5-level basement which houses: kitchens, food storage and food preparation areas, spa, plant rooms and accommodation. Near to a large river, the site sited well within the water table. The original waterproofing system was based on the secant piled walls and a block wall internally to provide a basic drained protection system with drainage holes at various points to drain to various levels.Over time, the third floor had become completely saturated with all levels of the basement experiencing water ingress in varying levels from damp patches to significant “jets” of water and flows of water through the secant piles.With remediation waterproofing design strategies, it may take some time to specify a suitable system. It is important that investigations are thoroughly carried out by individuals with the capability of diagnosing the defect, assessing the extent of that defect, and recommending a suitable corrective measure.

As a leading provider of renewable energy across the UK, SSE Energy Services aims to drive the transition to a net zero carbon world through the development, construction and operation of state-of-the-art renewable energy assets. To support this mission, in 2017 SSE built a wind farm in Stronelairg - a remote area of Scotland near Loch Ness. At an elevation of around 600 meters above sea level, it is one of SSE’s windiest sites. The site includes 66 wind turbines and has the capacity to generate 228 MW of energy.As part of the project, SSE needed to create three transformer enclosure bays on the site, each of which had to meet a demanding four-hour fire-rated standard. This required the installation of walls and ceilings - as well as internal access doors for maintenance personal - that would all meet this high-level of fire resistance. It was also necessary that various penetrations, including wall bushings, were able to safely pass through the barriers in the enclosure bays.An additional challenge was that the project would have to be completed in an isolated setting where the work would be constantly exposed to cold, wet weather conditions. Having worked with Promat and its products for more than a decade, the project’s subcontractor, Invicta, knew its fire protection solutions would be a perfect fit for the wind farm’s unique requirements.

The XR Lab in the STEM Hangar at West Suffolk College is the most advanced augmented reality centre in the UK, predicted to lead the future of digital education.Windsor Patania Architects has created within an existing hangar a 700m2 structure that inspires and challenges from the moment students see it. Central to that impact has been the use of Arnourcoat’s SMG high gloss polished plaster on all exterior facades- including a dramatic three-dimensional geometric feature wall.The £2m design & build project, intended to re-shape vocational training in digital sciences as part of the College’s science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) specialist campus, was completed in just seven months. This was despite featuring numerous bespoke elements, and complex components- of which the feature wall was a significant part, with its combination of planes and angles.Architect Giovanni Patania originally intended the wall to be finished with metal- stainless steel, aluminium or zinc but it proved impossible to create to the standard required within the budget. Armourcoat’s superior luxurious SMG polished plaster delivered a practical, viable alternative, that met all Regulatory requirements for indoor air quality, zero VOC, low embodied carbon, fire resistance an thermal movement.SMG, with its rich, high gloss “lacquer” effect, could be accurately applied to create a seamless finish across the diverse facets of the entire XR Lab structure, building up the layers over the timber and plasterboard framework. In Armourcoat’s own dark grey colour palette, it reflects light to create a dark, reflective finish reminiscent of 2011: A Space Odyssey’s Monolith.The brief was to achieve something that was unprecedented and unique, that inspired future generations but made students feel it was a piece of alien architecture. A hard-wearing durable levelling screed was required for a major redevelopment project at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife. Originally opened in 1967, the facility is one of two main hospitals in the county, serving the town and mid-Fife area.  Extended in 2012, the hospital features an East, West and South and a main tower block, housing an accident and emergency department; maternity unit, an ENT unit, anaesthesia, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric surgery, mental health services, infectious diseases and operating theatres.   When complete, the latest expansion to the Edinburgh hospital, representing a £33m investment that was approved in early 2021, will see the hospital gain 140 additional parking spaces in a new parking facility, as well as 3 operating theatres, a supporting inpatient ward and associated outpatient facilities.Vebro Polymers has provided v-Cem – a rapid-drying, high-strength, shrinkage-compensated screed that can be applied prior to the installation of commercial floor coverings, including carpet, titles, laminate or hard-wearing resin finishes.Laid at depths between 10.0 mm and 55.0 mm and beyond, v-Cem can be used to form screeds that are bonded, unbonded and floating screed applications, and is suited to use in both internal and external applications — ideal for the in-progress construction site of Victoria Hospital.The expansion of the hospital has included many phases and trades, each keen to maintain momentum to deliver the finished facility in good time. v-Cem will dry in as little as 4 days to receive resin finishes and other resilient floor coverings.

When Mars Foods UK got in touch, this was no exception.The Mars foods factory has been running for over 100 years and have over 130,000 associates in over 80 countries. They focus on business, wellbeing, people and sustainability.The Mars Foods factory has a strict policy regarding protective clothing in their workplace in order to meet the strict Food Quality & Safety regulations. Overalls are fully laundered after every shift, and the issuing and control of these must be organised. This project also utilises a storage shelf built under the mailboxes, offering an area to place parcels.THE PROJECTThe laundry boxes we designed and manufactured are open on the rear side of the product and locked on the front side. Laundry is placed into the box through the open side, and members of staff unlock their specific box with a designated key – accessing their fresh clean overalls ready for each shift.This project features over 300 boxes that are semi-recessed into a stud wall, mounted upon plinths which provide stability and support to the banks of boxes. Each bank of laundry boxes is fitted with a surround flange (on both the rear and front sides), ensuring a neat finish between the boxes and the wall. The mailboxes are finished in a Sky Blue (RAL 5015) colour finish which was specified to meet the branding guidelines of the company.Always aiming to think outside the box, this was another opportunity to provide a high quality solution on another interesting project.

THE LOCATIONThis incredible luxury development is situated on the site of the Royal Mail Group Depot, Sorting Office, Postal Museum, and the Royal Mail private underground railway network. A very significant project for us to be involved in not only for the relevance of Royal Mail but also because SLB manufactured and installed the Mount Pleasant sorting office mailboxes on this site over 20 years ago.THE PROJECTThe Postmark sits on a 6-acre land which provides 681 new homes and 20,000 sq. commercial space that includes a cinema room, relaxing lobbies, a state-of-the-art gym, and a roof terrace that looks over Farrington.THE PRODUCTThe Safety Letterbox Company supplied two different mailbox types for The Post Mark. After considering the specifications and the design of our projects, the Interior Designers chose the Tile mailbox and the FR2 mailbox.The Tile mailbox is a unique model in many ways, boxes sit snugly next to each other due to the innovative SLB developed hinge mechanism, allowing doors to open in their own space, hence the Tile appearance, other usual features are removed to simplify its appearance with a slot rather than a letter flap. The mailboxes also showcase our Vitreous Enamel finish. Vitreous Enamel is a thin layer of glass fused at a high temperature onto the metal surface. This is the perfect finish for our Tile mailboxes as it gives the product a bespoke finish. This Tile mailbox is an in-front/out-front horizontal product making it safe and secure for the residents in the building. The Tile Mailbox is very versatile in colour options too, on this project, the Interior Designers required the mailboxes to be the same colour as the wall which was Polaris Blue (RAL 1649).The other mailboxes The Safety Letterbox Company supplied for this project were FR2, a 2-hour fire-rated mailbox that is suitable for horizontally storing A4-sized mail for both front entry and front retrieval. The Fire Rated 2 mailbox has been developed to restrict the spread of fire for up to two hours only and if recessed into a fire-rated wall, will maintain the integrity of the fire-rated wall for up to two hours. FR2 is the perfect mailbox solution when placed in the main emergency exit.The FR2 is customisable, and The Postmark wanted a similar product to The Tile mailbox but with extra safety precautions. The FR2 mailboxes were all recessed and banked 3 high by 7 wide with the same Polaris blue colour making the mailboxes blend into the wall. The Post Mark also wanted to make the mailboxes practical for their residents, so they added a standard engraving with black infill.

The Silverstone Interactive Museum is a 600m­² motorsport exhibition located at the world famous Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire. The £22 million building, built with a contribution from the National Lottery Heritage Fund consists of a fully refurbished WWII aircraft hangar and a new two-storey extension which serves as the entrance to the exhibition. The TECHNAL curtain walling was a key part of the design and enabled large spans of glass to the front and rear of the building. This provides contrast to the iridescent finish and rainscreen cladding. This curtain wall system enabled large panel sizes of up to 2.8m high and 2m wide without additional steelwork that would have detracted from the intended design and added to the cost. The exposed location meant that airtightness and thermal efficiency were also design considerations. Our curtain walling features a thermally broken construction and high levels of wind and weather resistance. Due to the nature of the building and location close to the circuit, the goal with the acoustic requirements was to achieve a balance of reducing the sound from the track without completely eliminating it. This was achieved with TECHNAL systems using standard double glazing without the need for acoustic glass.

A unique £46.5 million redevelopment on London’s Regent Street by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Architects has created a stunning mixed-use building which incorporates Armourcoat polished plaster decorative finishes. The project for the Crown Estate, working within the confines of an historic grade II listed site, has produced an efficient and sustainable building with flagship retail space and prime office space.Over 400m2 of Armourcoat Spatulata polished plaster was applied to achieve the seamless finish to walls and ceilings in the reception area. The finish is achieved using a superfine stucco paste that is trowel applied in a series of fine layers to create a highly polished decorative surface. Sustainability has been central in the design of W4, achieving an ‘excellent’ sustainability rating under BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), which measures the environmental impact of buildings. In keeping with the eco specification, Armourcoat polished plaster contains 40% pre-consumer recycled marble and no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Photography © Rob Parrish

Former Terry's Chocolate Factory in York is transformed into a spectacular Care Village with the help of Johnstone's Trade. The landmark building is Grade II listed and, after a number of years lying unused and unloved was brought back to life using Johnstone’s Trade’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt and Acrylic Durable Matt. Applied to the walls and ceilings of the interior building, making it ideal for high traffic areas. In addition, Johnstone’s Water Based Undercoat and Gloss were used for the trim and window frames, providing a high sheen finish that will stay whiter for longer.

The £55.75 million development, which used a number of Johnstone’s Trade products was shortlisted in the Best Education Project category at the 2016 Partnership Awards. Acrylic Durable Eggshell in off-white was applied to the main wall areas for the striking colours. Other products that were specified for the project included Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt on the ceilings, providing a durable finish that is resistant to fading. The doors, frames and skirting boards of the new school was covered with Johnstone’s Aqua Gloss in grey and orange to give a traditional gloss look.

This project was a fit out of an existing commercial space to form a state of the art outpatients unit and imaging facility.Key to the clients design on this project is the need for products that are functional and compliant to a healthcare environment.SDS Dfendoor is used in our unique American Walnut finish, giving the look and feel of a luxury hotel and yet enabling compliance at all times and guaranteeing top level aesthetics.The project is effectively complimented by the use of the coordinating range of Dfend wall protection enabling discreet protection of common areas of damage in this robustly trafficked environment.

We’ve installed washrooms on three levels of a newly refurbished Grade A office building in the heart of London’s Mayfair district. The new washrooms were designed to mirror the reception area by using American Black Walnut real wood veneer and the same marble finish for the vanities. Illuminated mirrors plus wall-mounted taps and soap dispensers complete the design, while the marble panelling continues full height around the sinks and behind the mirrors. Our Alto full height toilet cubicles add to the high specification design.

Surrounded by greenery and gardens in the heart of Mayfair, Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane seamlessly balances award-winning design with the city’s high notes. Wetroom Materials have been supplying wetroom systems throughout their refurbishment. Wetroom Materials were able to work closely with the architects and developers and propose a drainage solution that would create minimal issues during installation and provide a high-end finish that could be in keeping with the hotels’ prestigious status by using our wall mounted drain and our Highline Custom.

At the heart of the new Pontoon Dock development is the ‘Royal Wharf Medical Centre’. As part of the internal fit-out package we were included for the supply of bespoke internal Fire doors, Screens and Architectural Ironmongery.Laminate door-sets were chosen to provide durability and great aesthetics. With A.W.Oak Linings and screens a great overall appearance was achieved that fully complies with the stringent requirements of a demanding environment.

Armourcoat have been specified throughout the VIVI restaurant, a 1960’s inspired eatery in the Centre Point building in London’s West End. VIVI promises to deliver traditional British food with an innovative twist.VIVI’s 290 cover dining room serving delicious British favourites has its interior design inspired by 1960’s colours and fabrics including a handmade chandelier by British designer Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt. The new restaurant, created by Rhubarb – the team behind Sky Garden and Verdi Italian Kitchen at the Royal Albert Hall, is part of a wider refurbishment of Richard Seifert’s celebrated Grade-II listed high-rise tower. Armourcoat finishes have been used to spectacular effect in the entrance lobby, restaurant reception, bar and dining area with close to 300m2 of hand finished Armourcoat polished plaster applied to the walls.

From the top it brought the viewing platform barrier to a full 1100mm whilst not interrupting the view across the city and from below offers a visually impressive architectural feature.

Atlas Concorde's Marvel porcelain collection took center stage in this project, delivering a modern and refined marble-inspired interior. The transformation of the family home's downstairs toilet and shower room, though compact in size, leaves a lasting impression of awe-inspiring beauty.Inspired by the opulence of London's prestigious classic hotels, the client envisioned a bathroom that exudes elegance and sophistication. Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School based in Kingstanding, just outside Birmingham, took advantage of a quieter time, with the majority of pupils home schooling, to undertake interior wall protection work with Yeoman Shield. Catering for 700 pupils aged 11- 16 the school has corridors and break-out areas throughout the school where walls and corners especially are exposed to marking and impact damage caused by the everyday movement of pupils, staff and equipment.The damage not only detracts from the smart image the school strives to up hold in all areas, but also becomes a strain on the maintenance budget with constant requirements of repair and redecoration. Guardian Handrail in Timber with attractive Stainless Steel accessories.Vulnerable wall corners were protected with 75 x 75 mm corner protection in a matching colour and Yeoman Shield 110 mm White PVCu cover over a solid timber core skirting was added.This full Yeoman Shield wall protection system will abolish the future need for repainting walls and skirting with cleaning being the only maintenance required, reducing budgets spends. An impressive basement extension, housing a swimming pool and sauna, required a robust waterproofing solution at this large country home.Newton Specialist Contractor Stonehouse were brought onto this large residential project to waterproof an underground extension including a swimming pool and sauna. Set in a small village in Berkshire, the impressive countryside home was designed by architects Spratley and Partners.For the new below-ground structure, Stonehouse were required to install a failsafe and maintainable waterproofing system that would completely protect the luxurious basement from unwanted water ingress.Ensuring that the project was fully compliant with BS 8102:2009, Stonehouse recommended a combined waterproofing solution using a Type B reinforced and water-resistant concrete structure designed to BS EN 1992, combined with a full Type C internal cavity drain membrane system.As the most reliable and completely maintainable Type C waterproofing solution, the Newton CDM System was the ideal choice for this structure. Firstly, Newton 508 membrane was securely fixed to the internal walls of the basement using Newton's specialist MultiPlug fixings.Any water that is captured by the membrane is then drained away with Newton Basedrain channels, and pumped out of the property using a Titan-Pro sump chamber fitted with two NP400 pumps and supported by a failsafe battery back-up system.As an extremely experienced waterproofing contractor, Stonehouse were able to confidently recommend, design and install a comprehensive and truly failsafe waterproofing system that will protect the property from unwanted water ingress for many years to come. Installed alongside some interesting brass architectural detailing, TECHNAL aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling has been specified and installed at Heathervale House, transforming the outdated office development. Situated in the centre of Tunbridge Wells, Heathervale House is a commercial property that has been used as an office space for decades. Originally clad in brick, slate and hung tile, the building had shown signs of disrepair, looking tired and dilapidated. To bring it back to life, the building owner developed plans to undertake a wide scale refurbishment and extension of the property. Following a feasibility study, the building was handed across to design-led architectural practice MortonScarr. From the outset, MortonScarr recognised how important updated glazing systems would be in improving the aesthetics and performance of the building, both internally and externally. Previously, Heathervale House had featured small, brown-framed windows, which limited how much sunlight those inside the offices received throughout the day. The entire facade of the three-storey building was re-clad with concrete tiles, with interesting projecting brass window boxes also incorporated. The window boxes, which feature TECHNAL systems, added visual relief to the building externally, whilst maximising internal vistas for the occupants. TECHNAL also assisted on a large rear extension, a new glazed lift to the front and two additional fully glazed storeys on top of the existing roof. Flooding the new office spaces with daylight, the large glazed expanses are shaded by two-storey bronze louvres. As a result the newly fitted office now brings in much more natural light than before.
