Slough Council - Langley Park

Slough Council - Langley Park

SolarVision Lighting Technologies

ChallengeSlough Borough Council are committed to reducing their carbon footprint across the region, as part of their pursuit of this target the council have sought to include climate-friendly lighting in their projects. Having used traditional solar solutions in the past, they contacted us to help develop a quality, reliable, and efficient solution for their Langley residential Public Open Space which was too dark in the evenings for residents. Working in partnership with Volker Highways, the site consisted of a common park area linking a housing estate with a major road junction for local transport services.SolutionSolar Vision Lighting Technologies were contacted as a solution provider to provide a lighting solution in the residential Public Open Space to help increase safety at night. Ideal for non-intrusive installation, our street lighting range was perfect for the brief provided. The Public Open Space was considered too dark, particularly along the site’s pathways connecting amenities and transport links. To resolve this issue, we installed solar light columns with a unique cylindrical design known as the ‘Solarwrap’, which is unlike traditional solar solutions which were specially designed for Councils like Slough in mind. This range provides A-rated optics designed to minimise light pollution while providing the required lighting, as well as contributing to the council’s net-zero carbon sustainability targets. Solar Vision were able to provide a full end to end solution from initial site surveys to non-invasive installation. A total of eight ASTRAL lighting columns were installed at the site utilising the Krinner Ground screw for a solution that resolves the lighting issue while ensuring the local ecosystem is undamaged.OutcomeThe ASTRAL column supplied in this project provides exceptional light flow across areas such as parking and communal locations, with the added benefit of motion detection to respect the residents and reduce light pollution. The site lighting provided across the areas now provides zero-carbon imprint in line with the council’s targets in addition to reduced maintenance due to the innovative design of this range, and lower ongoing costs not being linked to the main grid system delivering savings to the local community.CO₂ SavingsOver 25 years this project will have saved our atmosphere 9.2 tonnes of CO₂.Testimonial"We at Slough Borough Council have always been an Authority that have promoted Zero Carbon throughout the Borough and are always looking at ways that we can enhance our ambition of reducing our carbon footprint. When Solar Vision Lighting Technologies was brought to our attention, we were extremely keen to understand what they were offering with regard to off grid lighting. After understanding what they had to offer, we made the decision to work with Solar Vision LT and Volker Highways, our street lighting contractor, on a lighting project in a regularly used foot path in Langley Slough where we needed to light this heavily used footpath for added security at night for residents. With Solar Vision LT and Volker Highway we were able to provide a fully lit pathway without the requirement of putting in any infrastructure. Solar Visions LT, ASTRAL Solar Lighting Columns have provided us with a lighting solution without the need for any trenching and cabling work. We are delighted with the outcome and the carbon saving the borough will make due to this project."-Mr Sing-Wai Yu JP IEng MICE Infrastructure Lead - Major Infrastructure Projects RegenerationOrganisation: Slough Borough Council Installed: ASTRAL Lighting Columns

A STAGE FIT FOR TOMORROW’S FA STARS

A STAGE FIT FOR TOMORROW’S FA STARS

Zaun Limited

The FA wanted only the best for its highest-profile ‘social pitch’ at St George’s Park, its new centre of excellence in Staffordshire, opened in October 2012 by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – FA President Prince William wife, Kate. The fence at Pitch No 2, the David Beckham Pitch, needed to take sponsorship and branding and keep rattle and noise to a minimum. The FA also wanted to fit in with the landscaping of the National Forest in which the centre sits. The SolutionThe system had to be in keeping with the environment – even down to surfacing the pitch surrounding the same golden colour as the car parks. In addition, it needed to limit noise impact on neighbours and cause minimal disruption to pitch use during installation as the fencing went in after the pitch. They chose a quality system that will last on this high-usage pitch at heights of 2m and 5m with EPDM inserts to insulate the fence panels from the posts to reduce noise during impacts to 72dB compared with the 93dB of wooden panels.Zaun designed its Super Rebound to take branding and sponsorship signs and fencing to remain robust even in brisk winds when the graphics can threaten to act as a ‘sail’.The installation, which is around a pitch that is primarily used by the public rather than for England training, carriesZaun’s industry-leading 12-year product guarantee.Zaun worked closely with East Staffs Borough Council on planning consent and with the St George’s Park groundsmen and facilities team to complete a tight programme of works on the £105m complex on budget and in time for the royal opening.

SolarVision Lighting Technologies

ChallengeThe Estate has some grid connected lighting, however there were areas on the estate that weren’t lit and needed lighting. The residents did not want to dig up the roads to put the required infrastructure in and in addition they wanted a product that would go close to matching their existing columns and were aesthetically pleasing. Various meetings were held to consult with representatives of the Residents Association and after a number of committee meetings the green light was given for them to proceed with Solar Vision. SolutionSolar Visions HERITAGE column was the product that matched their existing columns. Solar Vision conducted a GPR survey to ensure that the locations selected were free of any services or obstructions. The HERITAGE columns were installed using our Krinner screw installation method which gave the residents the flexibility should they so wish to relocate the columns at a later date. This was completed with no digging up of roads or footpaths.  OutcomeSolar Vision installed 4m HERITAGE columns which have blended into the environment providing the residents with a soft lighting which lights the way for all evening road users, allowing the residents the comfort of knowing that the road is well lit and feeling a lot safer.CO₂ SavingsOver 25 years this project will have saved our atmosphere 3.45 tonnes of CO₂. Organisation: Weybridge Park Residents AssociationInstalled: HERITAGE lighting columns

Vario by VELUX - Country Kitchen Extension Transformed with Natural Light

Vario by VELUX - Country Kitchen Extension Transformed with Natural Light

VELUX Company Ltd

We met digital content creator and charity ambassador Sally, in her gorgeous detached house in the English countryside in Surrey. Sally, her husband Gav, their three sons, dog and cat live in a beautiful cottage with lots of outdoor space for football, dens and four chickens (all named Barbara). They’re an active, outdoorsy family who love embracing nature, from scuba diving to surfing Cornwall’s finest beaches.Over the years they have built two extensions to their house. In the most recent extension project, Sally chose to illuminate the end of her gorgeous country kitchen/diner with a Vario by VELUX bespoke rectangular rooflight, so we went to visit her for a cuppa and a lovely chat about her impressions and experience on the importance of daylight. Sally, what a bright and stunning space you have in here. Could you please tell us more about your extension project?"We love this house; it has plenty of space and we absolutely love the country lifestyle. We bought a house 12 years ago and that time it was much smaller. The first big extension we did was 9 years ago, but we didn't quite get what we wanted as the building restrictions at the time were very strict. The key thing for us was to bring the light in. A wall of glass made perfect sense, but as the extension has a flat roof, we also started to think about what was above. In a room like this, I think the roof should be seen as the fifth wall.”Your original plan was to put a glass lantern in the extension. What made you change your mind and choose a flat glass rooflight instead?“Initially we thought we would put a glass lantern in like everybody else and it didn’t even occur to me that I could have anything else until I was invited to a rooflight launch event by Vario by VELUX. At the event, I completely fell in love with the idea of having a rooflight in my house. I got all the information and, after I realised that even a modern flat rooflight comes with an upstand and you also get the height of the roof built in, which would also give the room the height we wanted, and that the cost would be less than having a lantern of the same size and with no breaks in the glass, choosing a flat glass rooflight was a no-brainer! What do you love most about owning a bespoke rooflight?“It’s so cool and yet functional. Rooflights brings so much more light in than you would get from a normal side window and the fact is that daylight does make you feel better, especially in winter. On top of that, the customer service was excellent, there is always a backup call from Vario by VELUX to make sure you are ordering the right window, they hold your hand through the whole thing and the whole process of designing and ordering was made fun and easy. They helped me with things like setting the window at a slight angle, so the rain just runs off and we don’t end up with a swimming pool situation on the roof! It’s a really hands on, personal service from a small team, but backed by a big name like VELUX so you know you can really trust them. It’s like the gold standard of roof windows.”How did you perceive the installation process of the rooflight?“The process was really simple, easy and quick. Our constructor was provided with all the information they needed to know, in order to put the rooflight in. Our bespoke rooflight was delivered in 6 weeks and we rented a small crane for a day to lift it in. The crane was literally tiny, it fitted through our side gate. Then it was simply a matter of dropping it into the opening and letting the builders do their thing to seal it in. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous on the installation day as the dog insisted on sitting under the opening and it was very windy, but it all went very well. That moment when the hardboard comes off and you get your first glimpse of the sky above, it’s just magic.”Do you think changing your house has improved your everyday life?“Extending the house, and how we use it, has changed the way we live, the way we work and the way we relax. Having an extension, an extra room, the flow and the light we wanted has definitely increased the value of the house but also the saleability of the house. How many older properties have flat roof extensions and haven’t put in a rooflight? There must be loads and they’re definitely missing a trick. We wanted to build personality and I believe that with the extension and bespoke rooflight we got exactly what we wanted. With more daylight and space, I feel more active, I feel more awake, I feel fresher, I get things done. It has definitely changed the way we live.”

The Emerald, Seattle, USA

Pilkington United Kingdom Limited

The Emerald rises 40 stories above one of Seattle's most desirable neighbourhoods. The LEED Silver certified building manages to redefine luxury living. According to the idea of Hewitt architecture studio from Seattle, high-quality, natural materials as well as the sophisticated daylight concept blur the boundaries between the interior rooms and the picturesque nature. This is particularly evident on the second and third floors where the Pilkington Profilit™ channel glass system spans the outside of the fitness centre and community meeting spaces. Large, glazed areas can diffuse extensive amounts of natural light deep into interior spaces without loss of privacy.Apart from channel glass, Pilkington Pyrostop® Line fire protection glass also ensures natural light deep into the interior. Both products were installed in systems from Technical Glass Products.A transparent façade with Pilkington fire-resistant glass was planned to separate the fitness studio from the corridor in terms of fire protection. The spacious inner façade made of glass provides plenty of light in the training area and enables the desired feel-good atmosphere in the fitness studio. At the same time, it directs a lot of light into the interior of the building. The fire-resistant glass Pilkington Pyrostop® Line was used in a Fireframe Clearview® system from TGP with Heat Barrier frames and doors from the Fireframe Heat Barrier series. This generously fire-resistant and at the same time impact-resistant solution could be implemented without a vertical frame between the individual panes, with almost colourless transitions between the adjacent glass panes and without coloured inner glass spacers.

Innovative insulation is ideal fit for new housing development

Recticel Insulation

Recticel Insulation’s innovative insulation board - Eurowall +, which has a tongue and groove joints on all four sides to ensure an airtight fit and improved thermal performance, was selected for a desirable new housing scheme built beside one of England’s eminent waterways. The Magenta Court development in Apsley, Hemel Hempstead is a multi-award nominated social housing project on behalf of Dacorum Borough Council. The £6.5m scheme, which stands alongside the famous Grand Union Canal, comprises 29 one-and-two bedroom flats within four blocks. The buildings’ design was inspired by the surrounding wharf architecture present in a nearby listed cottage, papermill and Apsley Lock.Being delivered by main contractor Jarvis Contracting, working with architects RG+P, key to the programme’s success was achieving an energy-efficient building fabric. This led to the specification of Eurowall®+, a high-performance PIR solution from Recticel. This flagship product helps to achieve a 0.18 U-value with a 90mm-thick panel in a 100mm cavity. The lightweight, easy-to-handle board features a tongue-and-groove joint on its four sides, allowing it to be used as full-fill cavity wall insulation with a 10mm clear cavity. The additional space makes for a rapid, more convenient fit for bricklayers when it comes to installation.Simon Blackham, Technical Manager at Recticel explained:This was a tremendous project to be involved with. It’s a superb housing scheme in a great location. With the buildings’ overall thermal efficiency among the priorities, it’s the type of project Eurowall®+ was created for. Further, it enhanced the programme’s sustainable credentials by reducing on-site labour times, thanks to the additional space it affords installers.Eurowall®+ is an exemplar of how high-performance materials can maximise a home’s thermal performance through a fabric-first approach. Its selection for the Magenta Court development was crucial to the creation of a number of desirable, energy-efficient affordable homes, whilst playing a part in ensuring the contractor remained on track to complete the project to the agreed timeframe. About Eurowall®+:Eurowall® + is a premium, high performance full fill insulation board with precision cut tongue and groove joints on all four sides. This ensures that the boards lock tightly together minimising heat loss through thermal bridging. This unique joint offers increased protection against wind driven rain as well as improved windtightness. Eurowall® + is also designed with a 10mm cavity requirement in mind, so that space can be left for conventional bricklaying techniques.

The Egyptian Gallery was the first of many projects at the Museum to benefit from a replacement duo-pitch rooflight using Lonsdale’s ThermGard Roof Light System. After having procured roof lanterns of varying quality and with disappointing results from different manufacturers, the Client was determined to establish a design that met their very high criteria for thermal performance and protection of the priceless exhibits from damaging UV light. Whilst wanting the benefits of modern aluminium systems, there was a requirement for a ‘heritage’ appearance so that any replacement roof lanterns mirrored the original timber construction. High performance solar control glass was also specified to reduce harmful UV light to the exhibits below. Solar protection was further enhanced by the fitting of external shading blinds to the overhead glazing which produce the slightly ‘eerie’ affect that can be seen in this image. Such was the success of this initial project, the Client has held Lonsdale as the benchmark by which other roof light manufacturers are measured and we repay this loyalty by ensuring a first class job every time.
