Before the installation of the Liberty Switch system could begin, a sub-floor was constructed using timber battens to provide a completely level surface onto which the pre-manufactured Liberty Switch base panels, complete with the drives and control mechanism were installed. The Harlequin Liberty top panels were then laid and locked into place, finally being topped with a Harlequin Studio vinyl floor. The whole system is operated via a master control unit using a simple touch screen placed on the wall of the room which enables rapid transformation.  

Howe Green’s 7500 Series Medium Duty Aluminium Floor Access Covers were supplied for the Nationalmuseum of Art in Stockholm, which is currently undergoing an extensive restoration programme. The premier tourist attraction required an access solution that was visually appealing, secure and of superior quality. The 7500 Series Floor Access Covers were fitted as duct runs in the museum. The majority of covers were infilled with limestone floor tiles while the remaining units have a visible concrete finish. The covers offer safe and easy access to cabling and other services located beneath the flooring.

Havas Media Group is a global network of entertainment, media and communications agencies, that has recently opened its new ‘HKX’ village in Pancras Square, London to unite twenty-four of its UK operations in a stunning new European headquarters. Given the nature of the fast-moving office environment at Havas, the combination of 14,000m2 raised access floors and 3,000m2 of Attiro magnetic engineered timber (supplied by Fieldmans, one of Kingspan’s supply and install partners) allows for the easy reconfiguration of office layouts and furniture, as well as providing instant access to the underfloor void.

Whites Concrete has supplied a pre-cast concrete chamber for an 11-tonne Archimedean screw turbine installed on the banks of the River Esk in Whitby, North Yorkshire by national engineering and construction company JN Bentley. The Whites Concrete chamber has been constructed using robust Groundwall L-shaped units, to house the 2.9m diameter screw turbine. The latter will operate with up to 4 cumec with a rated capacity of 51.6KW as it generates electricity for Esk Energy (Yorkshire). Esk Energy secured funding towards the cost of the project through a community share issue.

This ventilation system was key for this oak frame cottage in Herefordshire. After achieving an airtightness of 1.51, it was imperative to integrate ventilation to ensure the cottage was as energy-efficient and comfortable as possible.Partel consulted with Oakwrights to design a smart ventilation system that improved air quality and reduced energy costs. LUNOS e2 heat recovery ventilation units supplied by Partel were installed in all living spaces such as the living room, kitchen, and bedrooms. The versatile installation option, extremely compact fans, and highly energy-efficiency operation made them ideal for this residential project.

Located on the former Anglia Ruskin University site, in the heart of Chelmsford, City Park West is a newly created vibrant community. The scheme started in 2013 and has already delivered homes and new green space with commercial units. The second phase includes the construction of 426 new homes, 4,900sqm of commercial floor space, new public open spaces and underground parking. RCM were appointed by Conneely Facades to supply fabricated Alucobond A2 cassettes, Y-wall sheathing boards, Aluminium façade support frame and fixings to the construction of phase 2.

The Excelsior Building is a new addition to the impressive Haberdashers’ Aske’s School campus in Borehamwood. The courtyard comprises planted beds, with social spaces and pathways in a mix of resin-bound gravels and synthetic grass surfaces. To allow pupils to enjoy this new outdoor space a seating system was required that was sufficiently flexible, and RailRoad was the ideal choice. Over 60 linear metres of the Delta version from the RailRoad range was supplied, creating 4 long curvi-linear seating runs and also some shorter independent straight units, together with purpose-made steel planters.

A Selectaglaze secondary glazing treatment to a set of patio doors in a suburban home in Cockfosters, North London makes a living room warmer and more comfortable for a couple’s new born baby. A Series 10 2-pane horizontal sliding unit was installed to the patio doors. The opening was 2m x 2m and it was important that the treatment would match the existing sightlines. Timber grounds were fixed into the reveal, which had skirting boards. Installers scribed into the timber frame to create matching grooves and nuances to fit snug in the reveal and over the skirting.

Following years of neglect, the Grade II Listed Fellowship, Bellingham - London has undergone a huge transformation and in June 2019 reopened as the ‘Fellowship and Star’. Harking back to its history as a music and entertainment venue, it has a new cinema, theatre, concert space, pub; and is also home to charity ‘Lewisham Music’. To prevent the ingress of traffic noise from a busy thoroughfare outside and to prevent noise outbreak from the concerts and music lessons, 32 secondary glazed acoustically insulating units were manufactured and installed by Selectaglaze, to improve the performance of the original crittal windows.

The Profiline F30/F30 Plus/F60 is a fire resistant 3-part folding wooden ladder. It’s a ready to fit unit with a trapdoor and hatch box with an all-round rubber seal. The F30 is fire resistant tested from the underside, the F30 Plus from above and below and the F60 from below. It is simple to use and when folded away sits on top of the trapdoor. Supplied complete with a handrail, rubber feet and white cover strips to fix onto the hatch box edges. It has a turn latch locking mechanism operated by a wooden pole.

The new 4-screen Everyman Cinema in the town centre of Altrincham was created by refurbishing a vacant former retail unit. Designed by Fusion DNA, the striking building envelope features Senior’s high-performance, fully capped SF52 aluminium curtain walling. With exceptional thermal efficiency and attractive slim sightlines, the SF52 system created a welcoming entrance to the venue and a bright and attractive interior for the first-floor bar and restaurant. The new cinema also features Senior’s robust SPW501 commercial aluminium doors, which are ideally suited to high traffic retail and leisure schemes.

The Assembly Rooms is a new office block development on a site of a former 1870’s cinema situated on Werter Road, just off Putney High Street.Living Concrete team used an innovative concrete application technique to create ultra-sleek custom-built reception desk for Morgan Cox at Assembly Rooms. A special mix of spray concrete in Mist colour was applied onsite to MDF frame, seamlessly achieving a very complex and detailed design.In addition two large planter units with sitting benches were constructed and finished in the same style.

Western Power Distribution (WPD) provides service for Midlands, South West and South Wales, United Kingdom, with a network that spans the country’s width. WPD delivers electricity to more than 21,000 square miles (55,500 square kilometers) via 136,000 miles (220,000 km) of overhead lines and underground cables and 185,000 substations. WPD has committed to provide safer access to their 15,000 towers across the network. The company had used a double lanyard for working at heights, but wanted an alternative system that was faster, safer and reduced physical demands of climbing for their line operators.

The new £75 million Murray Royal Hospital, Perth was officially opened by Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond last year. The hospital provides state-of-the-art mental healthcare for adults from across Tayside. Franke supplied all manner of janitorial and healthcare washroom products to the project. Specification was exacting to ensure long and efficient product life and savings in water and energy use. Products from Franke Washroom Systems have included; an array of differing formats of HTM63 stainless steels sinks and worktops, disposal and janitorial units.

Cosmos is a new 864-unit student accommodation complex located at Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield inclose proximity to the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Cosmos will offer residency to students of both facilities, providing a range of rooms from studio apartments to shared en-suite apartments. The development consists of four tower blocks, ranging in scale from six-to-17 storeysLeviat’s Ancon MDC Masonry Support System played an essential part in the construction of a £46.5m student accommodation project in the heart of Sheffield, enabling a fast, efficient and structurally sound development.

The £27.5 million Arena heralds the most exciting and important changes to leisure facilities in Derby in the last 40 years. The new arena is primarily a Velodrome with space for sports and physical activity; however it also serves as a venue to host cultural events, exhibitions, product launches and conferences. Prospec Marathon Connect cubicles, Marathon laminate lockers, vanity units and benching are installed throughout all of the changing areas. A spectacular curved bank of low level lockers dominates the outfield circulation area, creating both a focal point and a huge volume of storage.

Positioned at the end of Stansted Airport runway, is a brand-new College which opened its doors for the first time in September 2018. With just one runway serving all take off and landings, and the college’s location not far from the end of it, noise was a big concern. Selectaglaze helped provide a tailor-made solution with secondary glazing. It is the most effective method of acoustic insulation for windows in extremely noisy areas. Selectaglaze installed 32 units across the college with their Series 10 - 2 and 3 pane horizontal sliders and a Series 41 casement door.

The current Google HQ, with vast external floor space over several levels. The decking is a bespoke solid section 230 x 30mm composite, commissioned for this site. All fixings are hidden, giving a seamless look to the terraces, and clean lines. The main terrace areas are level and by using the DPH slope correction system, the wheelchair access ramps were easily achieved. A clever feature; the BM Unit travels over the decking, hiding the steel rails below. This enlarges the overall usable terrace space considerably, and gives uninterrupted views from the entire terrace.

One Tower Bridge is a prestigious development offering five-star living by the banks of the Thames. It offers uninterrupted views of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, unrivalled residents’ facilities and the highest of specifications. The Outdoor Deck Company supplied and installed decking, contemporary screens, butt-joint fencing, seating, step and riser units plus pergolas (RAL colour-matched aluminium with hardwood and Cedar slats). This prestigious project was awarded the `Grand Award` and `Principle Award – Hard Landscaping Construction over £1.5m` at the BALI National Landscape Awards in December 2017.

One Hyde Park is a major residential and retail complex located in Knightsbridge, London. The development includes three retail units totaling 35,800 m2 and 86 residential properties with prices starting at around £20 million. The Outdoor Deck Company supplied and installed premium grade Ipe timber decking to all roofs across all four buildings. The deck boards were supported by 28,000 DPH Buzon pedestals. The project was a success and the Outdoor Deck Company were proud to be involved in installing their first-class products to one of London’s most prestigious developments.

Skerries Road Southway Campus in Plymouth comprises of 67 timber frame units supplied by local manufacturer and STA member Cornwall Timber Build. Originally a traditional block exterior, the architects changed the design to accommodate the innovative RendaClad façade. The programme was delivered 3 months ahead of schedule on the overall contract when utilising a form of modern methods of construction with the use of SPSenvirowall’s RendaClad. Whilst not satisfied with the BBA for a minimum 30-year service life, SPSenvirowall went into contract with BOPAS BLP and Lloyds Register to achieve a stand-alone assurance.

Re-form Landscape Architecture were tasked with sourcing sustainable hard landscaping for The Sarah Swift Building, University of Lincoln.The public realm setting of the building links Brayford Wharf through to the historic Wigford Yard. Ultimately the space extends through to Lincolns’ High Street – thus uniting the University campus with the city centre. As such, a paving solution was required that would adequately define the areas and complement the modern facade of the University building.Tobermore’s Fusion block paving in Silver and Graphite was chosen as the hard landscaping of choice, complemented by the addition of Fusion Kerb.

This project involved a brand new Starbucks drive-thru being built in West London where the customer wanted the overlooked rooftop to be green. The customer was able to give the basic dimensions to our team and describe how they wanted the roof laid out. We then calculated the exact quantity of units needed with our inhouse software and gave delivery and installation guidance to the contractor and end client. Wallbarn also supplied the materials for the semi-extensive border including geotextile fleece, drainage board and our specially-developed substrate for a comprehensive green roof solution,

EVAC-ALERT, C-TEC’s powerful BS 8629 compliant evacuation alert system is protecting seven high-rise residential tower blocks in the heart of London. Guinness Square in Southwark and the Houses of Aubin, Clemoes, Maitland, Sherratt, Southgate and Sweeting in Brixton’s Loughborough Park are all managed by The Guinness Partnership, a 130-year-old charitable organisation that prides itself on providing high quality homes to improve people’s lives. The upgrading of the life safety systems was deemed vital to ensure the protection of residents living in the properties.Orestone Controls, the BAFE SP203 and SP207-accredited specialist systems integrator, was tasked with equipping the blocks with fully BS 8629 compliant evacuation alert systems to assist the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) in evacuating part, or all, of a building in an emergency.  Ryan Mullen, Orestone’s CCO said: “Demand for evacuation systems is at an all-time high due to a combination of improved fire safety standards and new legislation. We’ve particularly noticed an increase in enquiries and orders since the new Part B of the Building Regs came in last year, as this says they must be installed in all new high-rise residential buildings over 18m in England. The new HSE ‘Be Ready’ campaign will also no doubt trigger new contracts with local councils and private companies over the next six months.”Ryan said: “We chose to specialise in EVAC-ALERT primarily for the ‘handholding’ service C-TEC provides, namely the first-class technical support that is so important on life-safety system projects. From the very first demonstration of EVAC-ALERT at our offices, to where we are today, C-TEC has supported us and our relationship has gone from strength to strength. We are experts at installation, highly conversant with the standards and because of this we have had to expand our fire division again with additional dedicated engineers to deal with growing demand. Throughout a project, the company is there to make life easier for the client, be that the consultant, the installer, the owner or building management company and they can assist with plans, technical drawings and the loop calculations required.By using the unique evacuation alert system software created by C-TEC’s R&D team and undertaking an assessment of a building, Orestone calculated exactly which devices are required. Special requirements for, say, elderly, vulnerable and disabled residents, were also taken into consideration. For example, visual indicators, vibrating pillow pads, etc. C-TEC also provided free advice and training on commissioning, cause and effects.  Ryan said: “Our engineers are constantly expressing how simple and intuitive EVAC ALERT is to install. The wiring is very straightforward and the flat interface units give you confidence that any short circuits will be isolated protecting the integrity of the loops. There’s no doubt that the system’s simplicity has allowed us to achieve minimal disruption to residents and work around their busy lives as we can be in and out of each flat in under an hour.  “Customer satisfaction is very important to Orestone and we consistently score five out of five on reviews. At Guinness Square we even held a joint open day with The Guinness Partnership to showcase the technology to residents, which the London Fire Brigade also attended and which was very successful.”The systems in each high-rise typically consist of 2-loop control panels connected to a host of single and multi-way interface units, self-testing sounders and visual indicators. Simple and intuitive, with manual controls to allow firefighters to easily operate the evacuation alert devices located inside flats on a floor-by-floor basis, the panel is stored in a secure vandal resistant cabinet which can only be accessed by the FRS using a special copy-protected key.Peace of mind that there is a Plan B if everything else goes wrong is crucial in the current climate, not just for owners and residents, but also for the fire service. Teesside-based logistics firm AV Dawson has built a new 130,000m3 warehouse specifically to store £15m-worth steel coils for a nearby international car manufacturer. With the steel at risk of ‘sweating’ and rusting in high humidity levels exceeding 65%, the company was tasked with ensuring a very specific climate for the warehouse (without which the steel would be rendered unusable), while also maintaining low energy costs.The SolutionHoward Tribick, director at local renewable energy specialist and NIBE Pro Installer HT Energy, specified, designed and fitted ten NIBE F1345 ground source heat pumps (GSHPs). Given the site is built on top of an active water table (the River Tees), Howard and the team were able to make the most of the surroundings as a natural energy source. The heat pumps collect heat from 70 bore holes, each 150m deep – a total of 10,500m of active bore hole depth. Each 60kW GSHP is paired with its own ventilating unit and 500L NIBE UKV buffer tank – producing a total output of 600kW. Solar panels on the roof provide an additional 220kW to help meet the warehouse’s electricity needs.ResultsWith the ten GSHPs now fully operational, the results have been even better than expected – with a seasonal performance factor (SPF) of 3.65 and average humidity levels of just 47%. Interconnected with 3km of header pipes, the GSHPs are spaced equidistantly along one side of the 264m-long building. The units are set up as separate systems, so they can work independently of each other or together as required. This provides an added level of security for the customer, ensuring the system can cope at all times and the steel is kept at optimum conditions.Customer Testimonial“This system made perfect commercial sense for us. While the initial outlay was greater than some of the other alternatives, GSHPs provided the most cost-effective solution by far in the long term. A hugely popular handrail design that ASF have supplied to projects in many locations. The full sized bollards that are used as post uprights give a sense of solidity and permanence, whilst the mitred top gives them just enough of a decorative nature to lift the product beyond a simple post and handrail job. In this project all welds and interfaces were polished back on site so the finished product becomes a complete unit with no visible fixings. With both double and single handrails over multiple flights and angles, this project shows how ASF can manage any project need.

When the Duty-Free Retail Area of the airport was recently refurbished, the design incorporated large sweeping curves on plan which also incorporated the shopfronts. The demise line of the shopfronts also entailed that they needed the facility to be closed off outside trading hours from a security point of view in addition to each unit being an individual fire compartment. Bolton Gate’s Contour shutters were specified which operate laterally and coil into a box at one end - this innovative product can describe an infinite number of bends and curves whilst closing off openings up to 100 metres wide.

ExCeL is the largest permanent exhibition site in London that links up with the Aloft Hotel. The overall terrace area exceeds 2,100m², all on one level. Below the terrace are the car parks, with countless drain access points that require maintenance annually. The terrace required pedestals to accommodate a void of +/- 220mm, with circular adjustable spacer tabs to accept odd shaped pavers alongside linear pavers, however large enough to allow drainage for extreme weather conditions. The Buzon DPH series, with special rotating spacer tabs were used to achieve this. The total pedestals required exceeded 25,000 units.

The Clement Windows Group has manufactured and installed steel windows from its W20 range for the Comet Works in Birmingham’s Princip Street. The original warehouse buildings in the city’s former Gun Quarter have been converted by building re-animator Javelin Block into 20 impressive residential units, including lofts, apartments and mews houses. The Clement W20 range was specified for its ability to provide an almost exact match to the existing metal windows while offering modern advantages such as double glazing and a very long-lasting polyester powder paint coating requiring minimal maintenance.
