Aluminium has been increasingly recognised as a viable material for construction products over recent years. With concerns over fire safety in external wall systems shifting the industry towards non-combustible solutions, the benefits specifically of extruded aluminium profiles, such as decking or cladding boards, have answered many of these new challenges.

Ahmarra Door Solutions manufactured over 200 fire doors for the Pears Building, which is situated next to the Royal Free Hospital in London.The FD30 and FD60 doorsets incorporated Halspan Optima door blanks.The Pears Building will accommodate the UCL Institute of Immunity and Transplantation. This is a state-of-the-art medical research centre which will advance the understanding of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, HIV, and tuberculosis, and for traditional and tissue-developed transplants.Designed by Hopkins Architects and constructed under main contractor, Willmott Dixon, the building’s seven-storey structure includes laboratory space, research facilities, offices and two levels of patient accommodation, which will enable people undergoing clinical trials to rest and recover there.Designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent, sustainability was at the heart of the building’s creation. With fire doors under close scrutiny in the aftermath of Grenfell, the public’s trust in their ability to protect lives and assets urgently needs to be restored. Rebuilding confidence in fire rated doorsets needs a focus on every element of its construction, with one of the most critical elements being the intumescent seal. Intumescent seals have now been used in fire rated doorsets for four decades. They help to stop the spread of fire and smoke, with the most common types in the UK being manufactured from compounds of sodium silicate or intercalated graphite.

A chapel was first built at Swan Hill in the town of Shrewsbury in 1767. In 1868, this was demolished and replaced with the current building; schoolrooms were then added in 1880. Charters Property Ltd who specialise in property development, consultancy and project management, recently purchased the deconsecrated church and have transformed the building into a prestigious development of four fabulous homes.Sensitivity was key when renovating the property and the majority of the original features have been preserved. Original stone walls, lintels and cills have been repaired and impeccably replaced. The walls and roofs have been insulated and energy saving measures implemented to create a comfortable, efficient living environment.Although it was possible to restore some of the original fenestration, double glazed replacement steel windows were still required throughout the building. Clement were thrilled to manufacture these new steel windows and doors. Various Clement ranges were used to meet the different criteria required for the project. For example, the Brooking range was used for the beautiful arched head windows on the front elevation as it would best replicate the originals which would have been silicone fronted. EB16 was used for other windows where silicone fronting was not required and W20 was used to make the steel doors. In total over thirty individual windows were specified, all in various shapes and sizes.Clement Conservation Rooflights were also specified, which bring masses of light in through the beautiful, high ceilings.James Charters, Director of Charters Property said “We were very pleased with the attention to detail and finish of the steel windows, Clement took ownership of their section of the project and were able to deliver a complex scheme on time and to a very good standard. To link the old structure and the new one was the main challenge to this project . As a result , the extension is a minimal and curvy volumen which adapts itself to the existing building . Our vertical blinds have been chosen because of their high versatility , adapting themselves perfectly to the curvy openings of the new façade . The JV40Bis office building, located between Calle Josefa Valcárcel and Calle Telémaco in Madrid, features more than 8,700m² distributed across seven floors. Thanks to its architecture comprised of classic lines, this building by the architect Francisco Mangado provides a striking contrast to the glass facades of the adjacent office buildings.The main architectural goal was to create a healthy work environment, prioritizing the well-being of workers in terms of visual, thermal and acoustic comfort. This aim was achieved and the building was awarded LEED Platinum certification, issued by the U.S. Green Building Council. This certification classifies the project as a sustainable, energy-efficient construction with reduced emissions and a satisfactory indoor environment; in this case, this leads to comfortable workspaces.All this is, in part, thanks to the more than 700 Bandalux Premium Plus shades that guarantee optimal solar management given their minimum gap (space between the fabric and bracket). These technical shades integrate well with the restrained, timeless aesthetics of a large, diaphanous space that encompasses work zones, relaxation areas and leisure spaces in which the user adapts solar incidence to the requirements of any given moment.The Polyscreen® 550 fabric in White Linen can block up to 96% of sunlight and it provides the visual and thermal comfort necessary in the workspace. Its high energy performance leads to savings in terms of heating and air conditioning. It is fully recyclable, free from substances that are harmful to health, and it preserves the indoor air quality, having been awarded the Greenguard Gold certification.

The building, located in the center of the city of Monein , welcomes, every Monday, the market . Overlooking the Vale of Evesham in an area of outstanding beauty, the brand-new Wood Norton Care Village is more than just a residential home. Featuring 48 village apartments, a 60-bedroom care home and a whole host of amenities – including restaurants, bars, shops and a cinema, as well as a leisure centre, spa and swimming pool – the Wood Norton Care Village encompasses an entire community. The complete interior and exterior decoration at the new facility required a number of premium quality paints from Johnstone's Trade.

More than 13,000 litres of Johnstone’s Trade’s Microbarr Anti-Bacterial Acrylic Matt has been used to deliver a stunning finish at the brand new Alder Hey in the Park hospital in Liverpool. Microbarr Anti-Bacterial Acrylic Matt was applied over the course of the two-year decorating cycle, covering 51,000 sq m of walls and ceilings. A wide variety of colours were used throughout the building, including warm grey, avocado green, yellow, taupe, cobalt blue and olive. This helped to create the inviting atmosphere that was so important to the client and building’s designers.

Johnstone’s Trade’s products have been the driving force behind a striking new-look Mini dealership. For the exterior metal cladding, Johnstone’s Metal Defence System Steel & Cladding Topcoat in black was used to provide excellent protection from corrosion, ensuring the building will continue to stand out for years to come. Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt, specified in both off white and orange, was applied to the dealership’s interior to showcase the superb cars on show, with a superb finish free from flashing.

Johnstone’s Trade’s Acrylic Eggshell has been used to stunning effect in the redecoration of the ornate paintwork inside St Theresa’s Church in Dublin. Johnstone’s Acrylic Eggshell was recommended by Blackwood due to its durability, and the fact that surfaces could be easily washed to remove stains including soot from candles. The quick-drying properties of the product, combined with the fact that the team worked solely at night and used battery operated cherry pickers rather than scaffolding, meant disruption to the church’s busy schedule of day-to-day activities was kept to an absolute minimum.

Innovative products from Johnstone’s Trade’s Ecological Solutions range have played their part in a £400 million shopping centre in the heart of Leeds achieving the coveted BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt and Acrylic Durable Matt - part of the brand’s Ecological Solutions range - were used by Leeds-based A S Broadley to decorate walkways and all back of house areas. The Ecological Solutions range boasts 14 products that have been awarded the prestigious Ecolabel accreditation; the EU’s premier environmental accreditation for paint that meets the highest environmental and performance standards.

Johnstone’s Trade were approached by the Commissioners of Irish Lights to improve the condition of the walls and the railings as the structure indicated that it had not been painted for a number of years. The products that were specified for the project included Johnstone’s Stormshield Pliolite Masonry, a solvent based paint that was applied on the exterior walls of the lighthouse to provide a smooth matt finish in Brilliant White. To complete the makeover, the metal railings of the lighthouse were painted in Johnstone’s Steel & Cladding Semi-gloss Top coat in Signal red.

The Ascent Up and On step unit was specified to create a safe means of access between different roof levels external to the roof of a city centre residential block. The building is has a single ply membrane roof covering and it was the clients desire not to penetrate the roof; hence the step over / stair unit is supported on rubber spreader feet which provide a non-penetrative support solution. The stair unit is designed in accordance with BS EN ISO 14122-1:2001 + A1:2010 and Building Reg Part K:2013 and manufactured following 1090 factory production control procedures.

Raiz cocktail bar is a trendy nightspot in the centre of Ponta Delgada, the bustling capital of the Azores. A busy venue, popular with locals and tourists alike, Raiz bar is a modern, industrial design, featuring exposed steel beams and glass walls with steel staircases connecting two floors. It was important to the owner, Gabriel, that as a main feature of the building design, the steelwork was not only protected against corrosion and fire, but also looked good, to enhance the ambience of the bar.One night, soon after closing, a fire took hold. The fire raged through Raiz bar destroying many fixtures and fittings and causing a substantial amount of damage. Initially it was thought the cause was from an electrical short-circuit, but having been ruled out it is now being investigated as a deliberate, criminal act. The fire burned for three hours before being brought under control and finally extinguished by the fire crews. Being outside of opening hours, the building was empty and fortunately no one was hurt.As the damage was assessed, it became apparent that the steel structure remained intact. Gabriel’s choice of Hempel’s intumescent coatings not only protected the steel against the heat and flames, but allowed additional time for the Fire Department to bring the fire under control.

Designed by Haworth Tompkins, the Bridge Theatre is a new commercial theatre building situated by City Hall overlooking the Thames. It was of utmost importance that the doors leading into the auditorium had the highest sound attenuating qualities. Shadbolt were asked to manufacture and supply bespoke FSC® certified sound attenuating performance doors and also FD30 and FD60 fire performance doors, factory hung into corresponding doorsets.

In September 2022, Bradbury Group installed eight ClassicAL doors at a low-rise block of flats for Central Bedfordshire Council.The replacement doors installed were a combination of Front Entrance and Rear entrance doors, providing fire integrity and security protection to the communal housing, as well as Network Communication Systems Limited, NCS, Chorus remote access management. The new intelligent door sets were designed to replace existing doors which were aged and not secure, leading to several instances of anti-social behaviour.

Siberian Larch was supplied for this project in four different half lap profiles, utilising standard widths of timber to retain the value from the timber, and reduce waste – whilst the different widths board create an interesting image over the vast areas of timber cladding. NORclad Grade B was supplied, offering a fair spread of knots, along with the distinctive grain of the species which can be seen across the images.

The children’s hospital is the largest centre for child heart surgery in the UK and one of the largest centres for heart transplantation in the world. The hospital is constructing a new building which will contain an Intraoperative Magnetic Resonance suite as well as physiotherapy and rehabilitation facilities. Lang+Fulton installed 45.3 linear metres of louvred panels 1100mm high with 3 access doors, galvanized and ppc RAL7038. The louvred panels were inverted to provide maximum visual screening from ground level.

A prestigious four-star hotel in Surrey gets a stylish enclosed pergola structure to suit the ambience and scenery of the location. This historic hotel’s large paved terrace area with outdoor BBQ was only equipped with some tables and chairs, and so only used on dry days in the summer months. The hotel's event team wanted to create a new flexible outdoor space that could guarantee availability for bookings throughout the year, whatever the weather....
