Fit Fresh needed a flooring system that could withstand the demands in its busy processing facility, such as regular forklift traffic and cold rooms kept at temperatures of around 5ºC.

The ProjectLoughborough College provides a range of courses in further education, along with apprenticeships and professional qualifications. It is based on one of the largest student campuses in Europe, sharing the area with Loughborough University. Over 2000 students attend the college, with some living in adjacent halls of residence.The college staircases needed to be refurbished. The flooring was previously terrazzo, and this was to be changed to a rubber flooring. This was suitable in terms of durability and slip resistance for the large amount of people on the campus. To complement the flooring, the stair nosings had to be equally hard-wearing and safe.The stair nosings needed to adhere to all Building Regulations guidelines, along with BS8300:2-2018 and the Equality Act. This meant that they needed to have great slip resistant properties, and stand out from the black flooring to create a ladder effect on the staircases. This would help people to navigate the stairways, especially those with visual impairments.There was a special request from the college which would help to attain this noticeable difference between the stair nosings and the steps: “Hot Rod Pink” tread material, to match Loughborough College colours.The ApproachMidlands Flooring was hired as the flooring contractor for the refurb. As Hot Rod Pink is not a standard stair nosing colour, Dave Wilson from Midlands Flooring got in touch with a number of manufacturers to see if anyone could rise to the challenge.Within 24 hours, Quantum Flooring returned its proposal for manufacturing bespoke Hot Rod Pink tread material specifically for Loughborough College. The unique stair nosing tread would be made from the same material as Quantum’s normal tread, meaning it would be slip resistant and suitable for the frequent foot traffic.Quantum’s SR125R stair nosings were chosen to fit the tread material into. These profiles have a ramped back, to ensure that there would be no trip hazard on the staircases. They are raked back on the riser, to ensure a perfect fit on the steps. Plus, Quantum’s UTA aluminium stair edging trims were fitted, providing a safe and aesthetically pleasing finish to the side of the steps on the open string stairs.The OutcomeQuantum ensured a fast turnaround on the stair nosings, using the QSMS free measuring service. A Quantum representative electronically measured all of the steps to their precise lengths, and sent the results to the distributor Carpet & Flooring in Birmingham for the stair nosings to be cut and drilled.Midlands Flooring fixed the stair nosings with Q-Fix contact adhesive, ensuring a strong bond to the steps. Secret-fix was used to drill the profiles, meaning the tread material could be fitted on site, and there was no need for unsightly plugs to hide the screws in the tread. Quantum’s SR125R stair nosings with Hot Rod Pink tread material look fantastic in Loughborough College. The college was delighted with the results.Loughborough College has a unique, on-brand stair nosing tread for its refurbished stairways. The 1920’s themed crazy golf course, Swingers, installed an innovative flooring solution from Flowcrete UK to create a walkway around its course that mimics a quintessential English country-side setting. Based in the heart of London, Swingers needed a floor finish that would portray this specific aesthetic at all times while also being able to withstand the scuffs, scrapes and stains inherent to a popular, inner-city visitor attraction.

Owen Street development is one of the city’s most high profile residential-led developments. But how would the planned integration of health and fitness facilities within the complex impact on the tranquillity of residents? TVS was approached by Fisher Acoustics to recommend a specialist acoustic floor build-up that would meet stringent acoustic criteria to protect residents and leisure users from any unwanted transmitted noise. The approved solution from TVS included installation of a specialist TVS RESi Dry Floating Floor System across the two floors incorporating the High Intensity Interval Training facilities and Yoga studios.

A huge regeneration project site emerged in Croydon which involved the construction of 514 apartments.The whole project covered approximately 34,000 square meters including ground-floor retail and office space.Soundis supplied a Soundis Cradle & Batten system on all 4 tower blocks which make up the 34,000m2 development. This system was installed directly on the concrete subfloor and was chosen due to its acoustic performance incorporating levelling capabilities.The Soundis Cradle & Batten system helps to improve both airborne and impact performance and is compliant with Robust Detail FFT2.

Surespan have recently completed the design and manufacturing of a large stainless steel hydraulic opening recessed floor door for a project in Sri-Lanka.The ProjectThe $850 million Waterfront integrated Resort (Cinnamon Life) is Sri Lanka’s largest and most iconic mixed development, located in the capital city of Colombo. Balmond Studio has designed and constructed the resort as a ‘city within a city’ offering two 5-star luxury hotels, offices, residences and premium retail and entertainment. They hope the resort will become one of the iconic and identifiable landmarks in Asia.The no-limits project is symbolic of Sri Lanka’s ambition, drive, and growth. The ProductSurespan were approached to manufacture the hatch to suit an opening of 6.5m by 4.1m and capable of withstanding a slow-moving wheel load of 10kN/m2. The pan-type door will be re-cessed for receiving 30mm of Natural Stone Slab infill with an approximate infill weight of 2 tonnes.Features The largest recessed floor hatch has been manufactured to provide a theoretical sound reduction of 45dB. To assist with installation, lifting points were designed to the frame exterior.

The commercial airline’s hangar at Aberdeen International Airport was in need of a new floor coating, as the old surface was showing signs of age and wear. The epoxy coating Flowcoat SK was chosen to create a seamless floor that would be able to maintain an unblemished, impervious and easy to clean finish despite the movement of planes, exposure to Skydrol hydraulic fluid and heavy onsite equipment.

866,000 tiles were fixed in the London Aquatics Centre, which formed the gateway to the Olympic Park. Project:Surespan were approached to develop and supply a series of 4 hour fire rated flush floor access covers for the Midfield Concourse expansion project at Hong Kong International Airport. The HK$10 Billion dollar project was completed in 2015 following extensive design and planning processes utilising BIM modelling. Product:Our SAC covers were specified for their fire rating and ease of customisation. The covers were specially adapted with a 200mm upstand and enhanced fire-rated materials to achieve the 4-hour rating. Howe Green Ltd supplied over 850 specially designed and manufactured floor access covers for an underground station which required safe, secure and easy access to building services concealed beneath the flooring. Howe Green designed bespoke duct covers based on the 7500 Series Medium-Duty Floor Access Covers. With a 69 mm depth the access covers were manufactured with an extra thick base plate and reinforcements to meet the demands of what will be a highly trafficked area. The access covers were infilled with two different types of flooring dependent upon their location - Conservation Smooth pavings from Marshalls and Granazzo.

Up to 186 floors of the world’s tallest building were levelled with ARDEX products – the largest volume of levelling and smoothing compound used on one project in the company’s history.

The award-winning Halle Orchestra has a new home in the city after the completion of a £6.6 million three-storey extension to a former church dating back to 1859. To ensure that the resulting extension would meet the orchestra’s exacting acoustic requirements, Architects Stephenson Studio called in TVS Group. TVS was tasked with designing and installing specialist acoustic flooring together with steelwork isolation pads which sit within the floors to take various column loads. The specialist TVS RESi Concrete Metal Floating Floor was installed over three different rehearsal areas.

Working on 100m2 per night, the entire floor of natural stone tiles had to be refurbished whilst the airport remained fully operational. The solution was a high strength ARDEX Ultra Rapid Drying Screed Cement in combination with ARDEX MICROTEC Natural Stone Adhesive, and Rapid Drying Tile Grout.

The flooring requirement at this museum in Leicester stipulated a safe and cleanable seamless finish to exhibit the discovery of Richard III's remains and the story behind the Battle of Bosworth. A simple black finish was specified in keeping with the design of this facility. The exhibition takes visitors through the history of the Wars of The Roses and then fast forwards 500 years to a Leicester car park where a discovery was made. Resuflor self smoother was installed at 3mm thickness across the floors and this was sealed Resupen WB Satin Black to give the desired sheen finish.

Stratum helped create a healthy and fresh environment in the specialist research laboratories based at the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital. The space would be heavily used and the nature of the work in the labs required the floor to be hygienic, seamless, easy to clean and with high resistance to chemicals. The design of the building allows the public to see through the windows into the laboratories from street level, meaning aesthetics were equally as important in product selection as functional properties. Stratum installed 800m2 of Pure Design – Bolidtop 525 with integrated skirting throughout. Solution-      Joint free makes for a very hygienic solution, with integrated joint free skirting adding to this.-      Close co-ordination with the contractor, enabled the structure to be sufficiently progressed early in the programme. This allowed the resin to be installed early and fully protected in ample time for the lab benches to be installed over.-      Electrical Floor Bokes, seamless skirting.Result-      The resin flooring installed here is an excellent addition to this multi-award winning building.  “The Bolidt resin provides the perfect seamless floor finish in the main laboratory spaces within the Zayed Centre for Research. These are most visible laboratory spaces within the building, both internally and from the public realm, and a choice of floor finish was important. As well as giving the right visual appearance it provides the functional properties required for these hard working spaces. Pre-installation samples of the resin flooring were tested by the client user team and passed on all technical requirements. The resin floor is used in both dry and wet areas of the laboratory and is easy to maintain. Opened in September 2022, the UCL East Campus in Stratford, London, includes apartments for over 500 students, cafes, a shop, a cinema and public art installations.This means that the campus can expect thousands of students and visitors to walk through their entrances each day, so the installation of an effective entrance flooring system was essential. Launched in the summer of 2022, Nuway Grid Black Anodised offers a stylish but contemporary alternative to Nuway Tuftiguard Black Anodised. Offering a modern aesthetic along with a 7-year warranty (as it was installed by Master Matting, a FESSI Contractor), Nuway Grid Black Anodised is the perfect product for this Campus as it can withstand heavy foot and wheeled traffic and help to reduce slips, trips and falls within the building by removing brought in dirt and moistures.  

The multi-million pound transformation of London Stansted Airport required a floor access solution that could accommodate very specific site conditions and meet the required loading. In two separate phases of work Howe Green supplied over 250 bespoke floor access panels and frames for the Satellite One and Departure Hall refurbishment. Howe Green adapted the 2500 Series and 5000 Series Stainless Steel Floor Access Covers to custom depths and incorporated an additional base plate reinforcement to meet the clients exact requirements. Single floor access covers and multi-part covers were supplied to provide safe and easy access to service utilities.

The ProjectProject Triathlon was conceived as a new build warehouse development at DP World London Gateway. It was designed specifically for use by DHL Supply Chain, the world’s leading contract logistics provider. This brand-new structure would have an internal volume equivalent to 645 Olympic-size swimming pools.Shire Flooring Ltd was employed as the flooring contractor for this huge project. As the new warehouse involved areas which would be used for differing purposes, a range of floorings would be necessary throughout the facility. This meant that a range of flooring accessories would also be needed, to complement the different floorcoverings.The ApproachShire Flooring spoke to Quantum Flooring about supplying the accessories for the project. They would need cove formers and capping strips, to be fitted with resilient floorcoverings. Two types of stair nosings would also be necessary; one to be fitted onto wooden steps, and one to be used on carpeted staircases.Quantum’s QCF35 cove former would be used to curve the vinyl at the floor-to-wall junctions, protecting the floorcovering from damage at the join and making it easier to clean. UCS1 flexible capping strips were selected in both black and white for a mix of colour designs in different parts of the building. These would create a neat finish to the floorcovering up the wall.On the carpeted staircases, Quantum’s ZHF1 stair nosings were chosen. These heavy-duty profiles were fitted with mist coloured tread material, to contrast with the black carpet. For the wooden flooring, ZF125R stair nosings were used. These profiles have a ramped back, so they can be fitted straight onto wood or concrete steps without creating a slip hazard. Black inserts were used to contrast with the natural wood colouring.The stair nosings were fitted using Q-Fix, Quantum’s contact adhesive. Q-Fix is a single solution to fix Quantum stair nosings, with no need for screws or plugs. With a strong and durable bond, there is no more reliable stair nosing adhesive on the market.The OutcomeShire Flooring completed their work on Project Triathlon in 2022. By the end of the project, they had fitted an immense 3000sqm of flooring. They had also fitted 400m of Quantum stair nosings, and 200m of Quantum capping strips and cove formers.Quantum’s UCS1 capping strips in both white and black look great in the warehouse, with the QCF35 cove former assisting in protecting the integrity of the floorcovering where it meets the wall.Meanwhile, the ZHF1 and ZF125R stair nosings look fantastic on their respective staircases. With Quantum’s slip resistant tread material, they are helping to prevent slips, trips, and falls for the many workers at the facility.Shire Flooring did excellent work with Quantum Flooring products in this extensive project. DHL Supply Chain can be happy with a great design scheme, along with products that will keep its workers safe going into the future. 

Each floor posed a different challenge during the refurbishment of this 1960s building. Some substrates contained bitumen, or old adhesive residues, whilst others had uneven and damaged concrete with rising damp. ARTIDEX NA was the only choice, as it covers all subfloors without the need to prime, and ARDEX DPM 1 C provided the ultimate moisture control solution.

The fire station and training centre at Edinburgh Airport worked with Flowcrete UK to identify and install a floor finish that would be able to cope with the difficult on-site conditions. A new floor was required as the previous quarry tile surface was incorrectly laid to a fall, this caused water to run in the wrong direction - ending up at the back of the building as well as ponding between the bays.

The ProjectsThe Northern Health and Social Care Trust and The Southern Health and Social Care Trust are two of the largest healthcare associations in Northern Ireland. Between them, they provide services to over 850,000 people. Among the facilities under the Northern Trust’s control is Causeway Hospital in Coleraine. The Southern Trust has Craigavon Area Hospital as one of its major healthcare sites.H&J Martin was established in 1840. For well over a century and a half it has been delivering the highest level of quality work in every aspect of construction and fit outs. For this reason, the company was chosen to oversee and facilitate the work on these prestigious hospitals.The hospitals needed new flooring to be installed throughout the buildings. The floorcovering would need to be made from a resilient material such as vinyl, making it easy to maintain high standards of hygiene using industrial cleaning machinery. The flooring would also need to be supported at the floor-to-wall junctions and around corners, to prevent flooring failure or collapse and to protect against the heavy-duty cleaning equipment.The ApproachH&J Martin decided to use Quantum Flooring’s CCFM1 internal and CCFM2 external floormitres to help protect the flooring around corners in the hospitals. Vinyl or other resilient floorcoverings can be particularly vulnerable where the flooring meets the wall at corners, as it can be difficult to mitre the angles correctly. These floormitres help to create a uniform finish every time, leading to greater structural integrity along with improved aesthetic results.Quantum’s QCF35 cove former was utilised to complement the CCFM1 and CCFM2. This profile fits perfectly with the curve of the floormitres, helping to create a flush and hygienic finish every time, at each floor-to-wall junction and around corners. The coving and the floormitres protect the floorcovering from damage at the join, and make the flooring easier to clean. For wet rooms, the vinyl can be fitted all the way up the wall where the floormitres can also be used in the wall-to-roof corners.The UCS3 slimline flexible capping strip was used to create neat finishes to the floorcovering up the walls of the hospitals. The UCS3 profile is specifically designed for healthcare environments. It has a slimline cap, reducing the accumulation of dirt and dust over time, and providing a smaller surface area to be cleaned than traditional capping strips. UCS3 is available in 25 metre coils making the packaging compact and the product easy to fit.The OutcomesCauseway Hospital and Craigavon Area Hospital were fitted with over 2,000 metres of floormitres, cove formers, and capping strips between July 2022 and July 2023. Sean O’Reilly, the Flooring Supervisor for H&J Martin, says: “As you can see from the finish, high quality work was made easier with floormitres.”The profiles used have been expertly fitted by H&J Martin employees, resulting in great looking and hygienic installations for both hospitals. The ProjectAmazon is one of the largest companies in the world, with over 1.6 million employees. It operates 185 distribution warehouses, or fulfilment centres, around North America and Europe. From these centres, Amazon staff pack and distribute products for its 200 million worldwide customers.A new Amazon fulfilment centre was opening in Knowsley, Liverpool. As part of the project, around 80m² of matting would need to be fitted in the entrance to the building. The matting needed to be hard wearing, and highly effective at removing dirt and debris from feet and wheels to handle the traffic of the many workers at the centre.The ApproachB & F Flooring was the flooring contractor appointed to the project. They contacted Quantum Flooring to discuss which entrance matting would be best suited for the Amazon fulfilment centre. It was decided that The Belgravia Matting System with black textile inserts would be ideal for the job.The Belgravia is a durable entrance matting which is suitable for both foot and trolley traffic. It is fitted with tufted nylon, which is fixed inside deep profile aluminium scraper treads. This maximises the dirt and debris which is removed from foot and wheeled traffic. The detritus is then captured by the closed construction of the matting system, making it simple to clean.Quantum’s Supply and Fit service was used to install The Belgravia. This meant that Quantum technicians measured the entrance area, and had the matting cut to the exact size to fit the 80m² of matwells. They then fitted the entrance matting, ensuring that The Belgravia sat neatly within the recesses.The OutcomeThe Belgravia Entrance Matting System looks fantastic in the Knowsley Fulfilment Centre. Because the matting area is very wide, the mats had to be fitted in a few pieces, with separate matwells for each part. Quantum’s technicians did this in such a way that it looks like one continuous system.This matting system helps to keep dirt and moisture from entering the building. The Belgravia protects the flooring beyond the matting itself, preventing it from becoming scuffed and worn before its time. It also helps to keep the Amazon workers safe, minimising the chance of slips and falls due to mud or rain which could otherwise be tracked into the warehouse.As The Belgravia is so hard wearing and easy to clean, it will be functioning at the Amazon fulfilment centre for many years to come. In fact, a 10-year guarantee is available with this entrance matting, for the peace of mind of both B & F Flooring and Amazon themselves.
