The electricity comes from a powerful solar energy plant located on the top of the roof. Any surplus electricity is fed back into the grid.Little wonder, then, that only doors of usual design and construction were suitable for a building such as this. Mobile Access Control to Your Apartment

Mobile Access Control to Your Apartment

dormakaba UK & Ireland Ltd

dormakaba supplies leading Exivo system to luxury YourApartment - a serviced aparthotel accommodation group, located in Bristol Looking to provide guests with a completely contactless service at its 34-studio Clifton Village aparthotel, YourApartment required a smart solution that would integrate with the booking systems, without needing to drill into the existing doors. dormakaba worked closely with the aparthotel to install its Exivo keyless system.Providing affordable lodging for the modern traveller, with a focus on interior design and tech-driven services, YourApartment accommodation aims to offer a guest experience that feels like home regardless of the length of stay. In 2020, the YourApartment Group announced plans to open accommodation in the Clifton Village area of Bristol having acquired the lease on a former student block, Merchants House. A £1.6m redevelopment, the owners wanted to ensure the new aparthotel was in keeping with its deluxe standards. The plans included a streamlined system that allowed guests contactless check-in and access their rooms using a smartphone. However, the lease for Merchants House included a stipulation that, to ensure flexibility of the property, the doors could not be screwed into, and existing door hardware could not be removed or replaced. Determined to offer guests a flexible and high-tech check-in experience, the group sought a contactless, smart solution that would integrate seamlessly with the Your Apartment booking system, that could be both installed and uninstalled at the end of the lease, with no alterations to the door itself. dormakaba overcame stiff competition win the tender for the project, and impressed with its Exivo system, which included Digital Cylinders, a Wireless Hub, and Wireless Extenders. Requiring no cabling within the door, the Exivo Digital Cylinders are powered by a standard battery, and were incredibly easy to fit within minutes without specialist tools or drilling into the existing door required. Thanks to this speed of installation, it took a little over a week for every door to be retrofitted with this smart solution. The product is incredibly simple to use, with users able to access their accommodation using the simple Evolo Smart app, and wireless functionality making it possible for management to transfer access rights remotely. By integrating with the Your Apartment booking system, rights could also be granted automatically, saving on time and maintenance and ensuring security at all times. The Exivo system has impressed so much, that dormakaba has since been invited to provide solutions for the wider YourApartment portfolio. Daniel Robinson, Marketing Manager for YourApartment, said, “The dormakaba Exivo system matched our requirements perfectly, integrating seamlessly with our Mew PMS System for bookings and Revinate CRM system for email automation. The speed of installation and minimal disruption allowed us to open Clifton Village on schedule, with a completely contactless booking and check-in process. “YourApartment is looking to expand into all major UK cities in the next five years, and we want to ensure all of our guests experience the same seamless and convenient check-in experience, so we will work with dormakaba again to integrate wireless, smart systems for our accommodation across the country.” Daniel Robinson Marketing Manager YourApartment

Optima FC in 3.0mm PPC Aluminium 1050 grade has been used in the completion on The Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group on Nottingham University's Jubilee Campus.Home to three purpose-built labs – High Power, Power Electronics, and Drives – the building was built after PEMC secured investment of £18million, including £1.5m from the Wolfson Foundation and £4m from Propulsion Futures. The 5,400m² development is internationally renowned and one of the largest on its field.FEA analysis was carried out by Sotech as non-standard sheets were used due to the sheer size of some panels. The purpose was to ensure enough stiffening resistance had been built into the sheets, to ensure the larger panels were safe and compliant. The project was completed during the first lockdown (due to Covid 19) meaning operations were paused during the project. Sotech and Deane Roofing worked closely together to keep as tightly as possible to the original timeline.Josh Stevens, Estimator at Sotech said: “This was my first project working with Deane Roofing, which was an absolute pleasure. Durable car park surface for business headquarters

Durable car park surface for business headquarters

Tarmac

This leading residential housing developer, required a new surface for the car park at its headquarters. It was a large site, with around 200 parking spaces for staff and visitors. The new surface would need to withstand the impact of regular vehicle movement and the abrasion caused by power assisted turning. The surface would also be used by larger vehicles making deliveries. Tarmac’s ULTIDRIVE asphalt was chosen as the solution. Designed to resist the long term effects of daily vehicle movement, ULTIDRIVE is a high performance asphalt with a smooth and highly durable finish. An advanced modified binder provides improved resistance to scuffing and abrasion from power-assisted turning. It also reduces softening in hot weather. ULTIDRIVE also provides enhanced resistance to temporary fuel and oil spills compared to conventional asphalt.

BackgroundQinetiQ is one of the world’s largest defence technology contractors. A solution was needed to significantly improve the lighting across their large headquarters site in Farnborough. There was a lack of quality lighting across the site for pedestrians and vehicles. The existing lighting was also high wattage but low quality.ChallengeDigging trenches for new mains-powered cabling to replace the failed circuits would have caused extensive disruption. It would also have been very costly. The new lighting solution needed to provide quality year round lighting, be easy to deploy and cost effective to run. Ensuring that installation works had minimal environmental impact wasalso a major objective. The solution also needed to be environmentally sustainable and significantly help reduce carbon emissions. The SolutionProducts — In ActionAfter a site visit, we developed a full lighting design and proposal, ensuring the new site lighting would reach the British lighting standards.A total of 64 AE3 and AE6 solar street lights and 65 solar bollards were installed, across car parks and walkways – delivering a bright and reliable year round lighting solution without noise, emissions and the need for mains power. Our expert, in-house, installation team carried out the work. It took only 3 weeks to complete and was done in accordance with QinetiQ’s health and safety regulations. This project demonstrates how sustainable solar lighting delivers a year round, commercially viable solution that can help towards reaching your sustainability targets.Products — FeatureThe Prolectric AE3 and AE6 are high quality, year round, permanent solar-powered LED street lights, with no need for mains electrical power. They can be fitted, or retrofitted, easily, quickly and economically as there is no need to install cables or dig trenches.Fully solar-powered – no carbon emissions, no noise, no electricity bills and minimal maintenance required. The AE3 and AE6 feature a smart controller and Passive Infra Red (PIR) sensor, ensuring the unit lasts from dusk to dawn – even throughout the darkest winter months. Our ST series bollards use the latest LED lights and battery optimisation technology, ensuring bright light for as long as needed. The vandal-resistant bollards have a polycarbonate domed head for strength and durability. The ResultsCost Savings Installation saved £300,000 compared to grid powered lightingYearly electricity cost savings of £7,750Testimonial Simon Homer - QinetiQ Project ManagerQinetiQ has a target of becoming a Net-Zero company with ambitious near-term GHG emission reduction targets. To assist with this ambition, Prolectric assessed our lighting needs, developed a detailed site lighting plan and installed over 129 solar street lights and bollards at our headquarters at Cody Technology Park. The new lights are bright and reliable, improving healthand safety during the hours of darkness. Bayside, Worthing

Leviat

Leviat’s Halfen HIT balcony connectors provide a high strength insulated connection for the unique wavy cantilevered balconies that wrap-round Worthing’s new landmark 15 storey towerAt 52 metres, the 15-storey Bayside Vista dominates the Worthing seafront, providing an ambitious centrepiece to spearhead the local council’s regeneration agenda.Designed by architects, Allies and Morrison, for Client and Main Contractor, Roffey Homes, the tower is by far the tallest building in Worthing. It provides an eye-catching marker building for the small Bayside development of 141 homes, a restaurant, and commercial units, which fronts the sea at the eastern reach of the town’s historic promenade.Taking inspiration from the metal verandas and intricate filigree work of the town’s Regency terraces, the architects have decorated the otherwise plain glazed facades with deep undulating balconies that completely encircle the building at every storey, creating a unique skin effect that elevates the design to another level. Recognised for its distinctive architecture, Bayside has become a powerful landmark having won prestigious awards including the RIBA South East Award 2023 and Building Beauty Award 2023. Unique cantilevered balconies required impressive load capacities and fire safety. The unique balcony structures are created using a continuous band of 225mm thick reinforced concrete that cantilevers out from the edge of the concrete floor slabs at every level. To create the undulating effect, the balcony slab varies in projection between 2.5m and 3m.Offset at each level, the slabs are precambered to increase load carrying capacity and edged with a balustrade of closely coupled white uprights, creating a rippling stack effect to mimic the random effect of waves breaking on a sandy beach. To maximise the visual effect, the client was keen to achieve the largest possible cantilever, whilst minimising deflection and movement due to the weight of the heavy concrete balcony structure. Adding to this, was the need to find a support solution that would deliver excellent fire safety as well as minimising thermal bridging between the structural floor slab and external balcony structure, in line with the client’s ‘fabric first’ approach to minimising energy use.Leviat's history of success made Halfen HIT the ideal solution. The decision was taken to use Leviat’s Halfen HIT range for the high-profile project due to the brand’s reputation and history of previous successful use on similar applications across Europe.Leviat produced a solution using its Halfen HIT-SP MVX connector, a special thermal connector specifically designed for high loadbearing applications in a cantilevered balcony slab. The high strength connectors, which were cast into the concrete slab edge during pouring, are specifically designed to transfer bending moments and high positive or negative shear forces, so were particularly applicable for the support of the very heavy continuous balcony structure.  The most thermally efficient balcony connector in the Halfen range, the HIT-SP MVX connector includes a special cassette section which places a 120mm thickness of non-combustible mineral wool across the joint to prevent thermal bridging and carries a 2-hour REI 120 fire rating for improved fire safety and performance.Façade Engineers, Cladding Consultancy Services, fitted a total of 2,500m of the CE marked Halfen HIT connector, which was manufactured in 1000mm lengths for ease of handling. All materials were supplied direct to the seafront site from Leviat’s facility in Houghton Regis. All images are ©Tim Crocker 2024.

Retrofit NIBE air source heat pump project for Manchester City Council

NIBE Energy Systems Ltd

Background to the projectSouthway Housing Trust is a South Manchester based housing association managing 6,000 local homes.Southway has pledged to be zero-carbon by 2038 and has identified switching its homes from gas to electric heating as crucial to achieving this target. In 2022, a survey of Southway’s residents found that 88% were keen to reduce their impact on climate change, and Southway’s commitment to reducing carbon is in line with Manchester City Council’s net-zero ambitions. The Arrowfield Low Carbon Living Project represents an early and ambitious retrofit of a south Manchester neighbourhood that will reduce the estate’s carbon footprint by as much as 50%.Southway is replacing 396 of Arrowfield’s inefficient gas boilers in-line with long term government plans to electrify heat and will also improve the fabric of homes to make them more energy efficient. The scale of the project, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), has made it one of the UK’s biggest home retrofit schemes.NIBE products used:NIBE F2040 Air Source Heat PumpKey stats:112 NIBE F2040 Air Source Heat Pumps installedContributes to project to remove 370 tonnes per annum of CO2 in ArrowfieldInstalled by Rothwell Plumbing GroupPart of a project to retrofit 199 homes with air source heat pumpsThe solution to the projectArrowfield Low Carbon Living is a flagship scheme in Manchester, retrofitting 199 homes and 197 apartments with air source heat pumps. NIBE was chosen as one of two heat pump providers to bring low carbon, sustainable heating to residents living in the Arrowfield estate. NIBE’s high quality, reliable heat pump systems provide optimum savings and automatically adapt to each home’s output requirements.Rothwell Plumbing Group (RPS) was chosen as the installation partner for the project, with a proven track record for delivering high quality heat pump systems, in both the public and private sectors. RPS are also MCS & Trustmark accredited, with the experience and technical ability to install NIBE systems to the highest of standards.Southway’s aim is for the project to act as a learning process and blueprint for how it can scale up the retrofitting of its entire housing stock over the next 15 years.Ahead of this ambitious project, a community engagement programme enabled greater awareness of heat pumps as a low carbon heating solution, whilst providing the opportunity to listen and respond to resident feedback. The Arrowfield Hub, located in in a repurposed empty house on the estate, became a venue for regular engagement between the residents and the project team, creating an open forum for questions and comments on the proposed scheme. The Hub was also heated by an air source heat pump, allowing residents to witness a live heat pump in operation and experience the warmth of the building.Residents were also able to express their concerns surrounding the project, and these could be addressed accordingly. This regular and open engagement was key to keeping residents informed and more familiar with their soon-to-be new heating systems. The Hub also allowed for the project team to dispel common myths and misconceptions about air source heat pumps and reassure residents that their homes would remain warm throughout the yearThe Results112 NIBE’s F2040 Air Source Heat Pumps have been providing heat and hot water to residents across the estate, adapting to the requirements of each and every home in the estate, whilst providing powerful output even down to outdoor temperatures as low as -20°C.The systems will provide homes across the estate with optimised energy and cost savings, whilst supplying a supply line temperature of up to 58°C regardless of outdoor temperatures.TestimonialMatt Roberts, Strategic Director of Property and Development at Southway Housing, said:"Community engagement for the Arrowfield Low Carbon Living Project was central to the project's aims. Foregrounding the needs of Arrowfield's residents as central to the project’s implementation, helped us to better convey the benefits of low carbon heating and address concerns and suggestions brought forward by homes set to benefit from the retrofit scheme.Air source heat pumps are essential to Southway Housing Trust decarbonising our housing stock and achieving our net-zero goals. Working in partnership with NIBE is part of that process and has contributed to achieving carbon savings of 370 tonnes CO2 per annum on Arrowfield.”About the installerRothwell Plumbing Services Group Ltd, formed in 1997, are a family run business specialising in delivering renewable solutions across the North of England. Rekortan M (Re-Topping) and Polytan SMART at Willesden Sports Centre, LondonTHE POWER OF SPORTWillesden Sports Centre is a fitness, leisure and community centre in North London. In Willesden, a neighbourhood not far from the famous Wembley Stadium, there is an expansive sports complex that includes the whole of King Edward VII Park. The complex encompasses two swimming pools, a fitness studio, a sports hall with a 60-metre indoor track and four courts, as well as steam rooms and saunas. For outdoor sports, there is an athletics facility with six 400-metre lanes and an integrated sprinting track with two additional lanes, along with facilities for various jumping and throwing disciplines. All the lanes of the athletics track were renewed with Rekortan M in brick red in the course of a full renovation in 2022. The consistency of the Rekortan M tread strikes the perfect balance between excellent shock absorption and maximum acceleration – properties that are appreciated by both middle-distance and short-distance runners alike. All the running and run-up tracks were refurbished using the re-topping process. This means that used and worn synthetic surfaces are completely technically and cosmetically restored. Re-topping is not only an extremely economical and explicitly sustainable solution for the renovation of sports facilities. It also allows the existing elastic substructures to remain in place, rather than being disposed of.The athletics facility at Willesden Sports Centre was also fitted with two Polytan SMART systems for the precise measurement and documentation of training performance. On one of the running tracks and sprinting tracks, athletes can conduct agility tests, jumping tests, endurance tests and sprint tests. Multiple Polytan SMART timing gates are integrated in the lanes. The athletics facility at Willesden Sports Centre can be booked by schools and clubs. Among them are the Willesden Triathlon Club and, in particular, the Track Academy. At the latter, former international athletes, coaches, mentors and teachers are of the belief that sport and education have the power to change people’s lives for the better. Under the motto “The Power of Sport”, they support disadvantaged young people to realise their potential and develop in a positive way. This includes building their self-confidence, affirming their self-worth and helping them to find the courage to acquire new skills and to plan and shape their own future.Currently, almost 400 young athletes train at the Track Academy at Willesden Sports Centre every week. This project successfully demonstrates how sustainable solar lighting delivers a year round, commercially viable solution that can help businesses reach their sustainability targets. Products — Feature Our AE3 solar-powered LED street lights are a high quality, year round, permanent solution with no need for mains electrical power. They can be fitted or retrofitted quickly and efficiently, as there is no need to install cables or dig trenches. Being fully solar-powered means no carbon emissions, no noise, no electricity bills, and minimal maintenance is required. The AE3 features a specially developed smart light controller and Passive Infra-Red (PIR) sensor. This ensures there is light, even throughout the darkest winter months."Having used Prolectric for several lighting projects now, I find their approach, ease of use, knowledge and range of products to be very good. It’s fantastic to be able to work with such a reliable and proactive supplier installing solar lighting adaptions to existing street lighting as well as new designs. The works are incredibly low impact for our families and cause no issues while being completed but result in much better lighting designs as well as eliminating the cost of traditional street lighting electricity bills for our client." Prospect Park Playground - Battersea

DCM Surfaces

DCM Surfaces recently completed work on one of Europe’s most significant construction projects – the redevelopment of Prospect Park Playground at the legendary Battersea Power Station.Prospect Park took inspiration from the power station’s iconic chimneys and brickwork patterns and was designed to be a vision of colour. The playground features areas suitable for all ages, allowing children to discover fun new climbable elements as they age.Careys Construction was the successful bidder for the contract. Following a rigorous selection process based on quality, cost and Health and Safety, DCM Surfaces were selected to install the synthetic surfacing for the playground. As part of the redevelopment scheme, DCM installed over 500m2 of Wetpour at various depths and colours. DCM worked closely with the contractor and architect to ensure that the ground was correctly prepared before installation and that suitable Wetpour RAL colours were used to blend in with the surrounding architecture.Wetpour provided a soft, impact-absorbing layer and achieved the maximum 3m Critical Fall Height required around the timber play equipment. Eight colours of Wetpour were used with an aliphatic binder to create colourful surfaces around the play equipment area and ensure no discolouration of the play area over time. One of the critical challenges DCM faced working on the largest construction site in Europe was related to logistics. All haulage vehicles entering the area were required to be FORS Gold, and a ticketing system for the entry of deliveries often resulted in materials being held for long periods in the queuing system.Regardless of the delays in material deliveries, the installation took place within the tight time frame allocated. The Mayor of Wandsworth, who officially opened the new children’s playground, said:“I would like to congratulate all those involved in delivering this exciting outdoor space, which is a great addition to the new riverside neighbourhood created at Battersea Power Station. I’m sure many families and children from the local community will enjoy hours of fun here.”

Surespan

Background Infomation:Wright Lab: Exploring the Invisible UniverseSurespan designed and manufactured a flush floor hatch for the Yale University Wright Laboratory, home to Yale’s iconic particle accelerator, the 100-foot-long atom smasher. In 1987 it was the most powerful particle accelerator in the world and led the research in astrophysics. The Atom Smasher was shut down in 2011 and disassembled in 2014.The projectAs part of a comprehensive renovation, Christopher Williams Architects LLC transformed the concrete bunker-like structure into a series of day-lit workspaces. The central building was opened to become a place where scientists, students and experts could interact. This space also hosts events and researchers from around the world. The design brings natural light into the building and emphasizes collaboration through transparency.Products:Surespan designed and manufactured a 2.7m x 4.5m (9ftx15ft) stainless steel flush floor hatch. The floor door has been reinforced to support a live slow-moving wheel load of 17 tons. (FACTA Class E)Due to the weight of the floor door, the hatch is operated via a hydraulic cylinder and an electrically driven power pack. The finished cover uses Sure-Grip anti-slip surface coating.
