Forbo Flooring Systems

Nearly 500 square meters of Flotex Planks form the basis for a relaxed soccer experience for almost 400 VIP guests in the VIP lounge of the Benteler Arena in Paderborn. Christian Schuster from Freiraum Planungsbüro was responsible for the feel-good ambience. Here, the sports club's holistic interior design concept includes not only a fancy lighting installation but also the creative design of the floor surfaces. "The unique feel of the flooring and its sound-absorbing effect decelerate the atmosphere in the room, " says Schuster, who particularly appreciates the combination of functional and design aspects for Forbo Flooring. It was precisely this combination of the exclusive look of the textile surface and high durability of the flooring that also convinced the sports club SC Paderborn to give preference to the flock flooring. While Flotex planks in a herringbone pattern in three harmonious colourways in the main area, a calm grey tone was chosen for the adjacent lounge and a radiant red tone for the new media lounge. With around 90 colourways, Flotex's broad colour selection offers the opportunity to set colour highlights.

SofTop comfort flooring used at Turin University

Sherwin-Williams

Project/location Aula Magna Università Torino –University of Turin in North West Italy is one of the oldest Universities in Europe but continues to play an important role in research and training, ranking 3rd in Italy for Universities covering these activities. This new build project in a lecture theatre in the faculty of Journalism and Literature project was part of ten-year construction project on the University site. For a modern floor finish in keeping with the design of the building a seamless finish was required – in total 301 m2 was installed in October 2020 with the Sherwin-Williams SofTop SL system and 61 m2 of Resuflor HB epoxy floor coatings. The concrete screed sub-base was poured in August. A comfort floor type finish was requested which would have sound absorbing characteristics and have a soft touch. The products being used needed to have extremely low VOC (volatile organic compound) content and have no smell when being applied. The finishing coating of the SofTop system installed was Resupen WB Colour which carries the Eurofin Gold certification for indoor air comfort which confirms that the product fulfils low odour product emissions.Product/technical spec including mechanical grinding and application of angle profiles using epoxy screed including the vertical parts.Following preparation Resuprime pure epoxy resin primer was applied at 400 gr/sqm and broadcasted with a 0,3-0,5 silica quartz to enhance intercoat adhesion with the resin topping. Once cured the SofTop SL polyurethane self smoothing floor system was installed, which uses a body coat SofTop SLR Flex with a UV stable seal coat of Resuflor WB Colour. Under the seated areas an application of a scratch coat using Resuflor HB was applied at 600 g/sqm which was abraded and then another coat of Resuflor HB Ral 7038 applied at 800 gr/sqm. Steps and walking areas were installed with SofTop SL system in Ral 7038 at 3000 gr/sqm to provide 3mm thickness.   The whole area involved sanding the vertical parts to remove roughness of epoxy screed and drops of the resin from horizontal application. This involved using sandpaper with grit 60 to horizontal surfaces and vacuum this ready to be coated. An application of 75 gr/sqm of Resupen WB Colour Ral 7038 was applied. SofTop floors provide extreme durability and robustness, yet retain a soft and comfortable finish which is modern and attractive for diverse applications. Designed with footfall and wear in mind the finish is so tough it’s suitable for industrial areas as well as commercial and domestic facilities. The SofTop range offers a choice of 3 flooring systems providing varying thicknesses with degrees of bounce and flexibility.SofTop SL used at Turin is typically installed at 2-4 mm thickness and is recommended for industrial and commercial areas subject to normal traffic. The system has a high wear resistance, high chemical resistance and medium resistance to shocks. The floor is suitable for dry areas such as schools, laboratories, corridor areas, electronic companies and health care facilities, etc. Where footfall occurs SofTop finishes are good for the back due to the soft impact effect. With many traditional hard floors, regular users can find they experience difficulties with back issues from walking on an unyielding surface. The soft finish provided with SofTop systems provides sound absorbing ergonomics, improving the acoustic properties of the building and reducing acoustic impact on other areas of the building. Systems deliver thickness for strength but with a soft finish which has excellent resistance to sharp objects, impacts, shocks and dropped objects, minimising the chance of remedial repairs being required. Being self smoothing polyurethane SofTop is one of the fastest ways to lay a flooring system and to create a beautiful and durable foundation that completes a construction or refurbishment. The SofTop floor systems available can be ready to receive traffic after only 24 hours. Because Sherwin-Williams systems are seamless and impervious to handle humid conditions, spills that stay on the surface can be easily cleaned and hygiene maintained, with no contamination.

Virgin Atlantic hangar uses Resutile ST flooring

Sherwin-Williams

This Virgin Airlines hangar at Heathrow Airport needed a flooring finish to resist wear and chemical spills, as well as deliver aesthetic appeal – with a light coloured shiny finish that would reflect light and capture the eye to brighten the 4000 square metre area.ExecutionTo ensure the highest quality finish for the hangar the proven standard Resutile ST floor coating system was organised. Specialist resin flooring contractor Datum Flooring first shot-blasted the concrete substrate under vacuum to achieve a Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) 3 to ensure an excellent mechanical key and long term solution with the coating system. Then a primer coat of Resuflor WB was applied which penetrates the concrete and provides a sound surface seal so that an even finish is achieved with the top coats. This was followed by two roller coats of Resutile ST Colour in Light Grey.

Qatar Airport uses Sherwin-Williams Terrazzo flooring

Sherwin-Williams

The challenge of installing one of the largest expanses of flooring in a single project – and one of the most complex – faced the hub where east meets west at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar. The airport is described as ‘the gateway to Qatar’ and the hub for its world-class airline Qatar Airways with the capacity to serve 8,700 passengers per hour and 30 million every year. Specifiers wanted a flooring high in aesthetic and environmental credentials to meet all requirements at this important airport zone and meeting all relevant environmental and health and safety regulations.  SystemThe system chosen was epoxy terrazzo flooring supplied by Sherwin-Williams - 140,000 sq metres of pigmented epoxy resin - involving the shipping of pre-mixed marble aggregates from Italy to complete the design for the main floor areas consisting of three colours, primarily dark grey with pure black or white epoxy terrazzo. The epoxy terrazzo was poured in situ as the 16,000 workers from various countries navigated their way around the 5,500-acre site and ground and polished the flooring to a high finish, bringing with it major environmental benefits. Thin set epoxy conforms to the EU’s solvents and Volatile Organic Compounds Emissions Directive. The installation process itself also meant there was very little waste – the terrazzo prepared for installation was measured accurately to allow as much or as little to be used in application. The epoxy terrazzo is high in aesthetic and environmental features and meets the demands of architects and specifiers for longer-lasting products with ever-greater green credentials.Terrazzo flooring is a composite – a mix of resin with aggregates which give the product such variety in its design. Intended to be a durable, hard-wearing and highly decorative flooring solution, the resinWith simple re-polishing or re-sealing using water-based products a typical terrazzo flooring can last up to 40 years. However, vinyl floor sheets would require replacing typically every 12 years or less. The Sherwin-Williams Difference By putting our customers first, we know that the innovation, imagination, research and development we put into each and every product will be worth it. You are at the centre of our thinking wherever we operate around the world across five continents whether it is advice, specification or on-site inspection. You are the reason we exist. In 2008 we supplied and installed Resin Flooring throughout the Biochemistry Laboratories during Phase One. Some 11 years later they requested Stratum applied the same flooring systems again to Phase Two, the new extension. Stratum delivered the project in collaboration with Bolidt, our European partner, installing in excess of 7,000m² of resin flooring using three different systems, connecting seamlessly into the existing resin from Phase one. The requirements for the flooring were for hardwearing and functional finishes, that were seamless in nature and hygienic. Systems were selected to meet the specific demands of each space. ChallengeTo navigate around the core areas of a busy construction site with sensitive floor finishes, and to maintain the highest quality of finish. – To tie seamlessly back into the existing resin flooring at each level, whilst ensuring that the occupied building can remain fully operational. – To do so amidst all of the challenges of Covid 19.SolutionProduct selection was easy, to match and tie into the same Bolidt finishes that have served phase 1 so well for so many years. – Programming would be key to ensure that areas could be prepared and all personnel informed and vacated for the duration of the install. Laing O’Rourke were exemplary to that end. – Continual adjustment was required to ensure Covid compliance was maintained through an ever changing working environment.Benefits/InstallationThe University were able to select the same finishes that they were so familiar with in their existing building. Only Stratum could offer a seamless tie-in and the same level of performance in the matching flooring systems.ResultThe university can now operate at full capacity, safe in the knowledge that the floors will perform in meeting their demands. High quality, hardwearing, seamless, hygienic, flexible.“This would be a complex build, and with Resin Flooring running through the core areas and laboratories we would need excellent planning. Stratum & Bolidt were able to offer both the expertise and flexibility required to produce a first class finish throughout.” Rob Cooper | (PM) | Laing O’Rourke

Separating floor soundproofing for assisted living flat, Merseyside

Hush Acoustics

Harbour Light Assisted Living CIC housing association approached Hush Acoustics to upgrade the floor within one of its flats to offer a higher level of soundproofing in line with the specific requirements of one of its tenants. The housing association, which specialises in providing bespoke accommodation and services to assist people with disabilities to fulfil their responsibilities as tenants and help them live an independent life, sought to improve the acoustic performance of a separating floor in the flat for a new resident. The individual suffered from an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which meant any flooring solution had to be appropriate for their needs, not only to reduce both impact and airborne ‘noise nuisance’ encroaching to the flat below, but also to ensure the final floor finish could be fully bonded to the acoustic substrate. The potential noise issues were regarded as higher than typical domestic noise which meant a more robust specification was required. The solution was provided by Hush Mat 15 with Hush Ply 28 overlaid. This provided the required mass, flexibility and isolation, as well as a robust surface to allow the floor covering to be directly bonded, ensuring it could not be lifted.

Garden Furniture Given New Life Thanks to Aquadecks

Garden Furniture Given New Life Thanks to Aquadecks

Owatrol UK Ltd

Recently, our good friends over at R & A Pressure Washing shared with us a customers garden furniture that was in dire need of restoration. They had a garden swing and a BBQ Prep station / organiser that was looking a little worse for wear. Being much loved and used had taken its toll. Luckily, Roger knew exactly what to do to restore them to their former glory.Firstly, Prepdeck was used to strip the previous coatingAs both the swing and the prep station had been previously coated, Roger had to strip off the old finish. This is a very important step and if you fail to do this it will alter your overall finish. Owatrol products need to penetrate into the wood to give the desired finish. This simply cannot be done if there is a previous coating on the wood.Roger worked in areas that could be completed in around 15 mins and applied the Prepdeck undiluted onto the furniture. After about 15 minutes, you can test a small area with a nylon scrubbing brush to see if the finish is lifting. If it is, scrub the area with a stiff nylon brush. Or, alternatively, a pressure washer at 1000 – 1500 psi (70-103 bars). The psi needed will vary depending on the type of wood you are using it on.Once sufficiently scrubbed, rinse with copious amounts of fresh water.Secondly, Net-Trol was used to clean and neutralise the woodRoger then used Net-Trol to lighten and restore the natural colour of the wood – without bleaching it.One of our favourite products, Net-Trol effortlessly removes ground in and surface dirt in as little as 15 minutes, leaving the furniture looking bright and vibrant. Before applying Net-Trol, Roger wet the furniture with clean water.Once both the pieces of furniture were sufficiently wet, he then applied Net-Trol with a synthetic brush and scrubbed the wood with a stiff synthetic brush. Roger worked to ensure that he had scrubbed the Net-Trol thoroughly making sure to get into all the small nooks and crannies. After leaving the Net-Trol to stand for approximately 15-20 minutes (if it started to dry, Roger applied a mist of water to keep it wet), he used a presser washer (max. 60 bar) to clean the furniture. If you don’t have a pressure washer, you can scrub the surface whilst simultaneously rinsing it with water.Lastly, the furniture was finished with Aquadecks in the shade honeyAquadecks is a water-based penetrating wood finish that can be used on both new and weathered wood. It’s easy to apply and maintain, with no labour-intensive sanding or stripping required.Roger applied a liberal amount of Aquadecks with a brush, working in the direction of the grain. As soon as the ‘wet look’ of the first application had disappeared, Roger then applied the second coat and allowed it to penetrate. This took around 15-20 minutes. It’s important not to let Aquadecks become touch dry between applications and to work in sections that will take no longer than 30 minutes to complete.Next, in order to avoid Aquadecks drying as shiny spots on the surface, he wiped up any excess that had not penetrated into the decking. As Aquadecks is water-based, Roger could then wash the brush and cloth in soap and water.Take a look at those beautiful finished results! We think they look absolutely brilliant. It’s just a shame the customer will have to wait for the warmer weather before using them again! You can find out more information about about Aquadecks by clicking here.

Clement steel windows selected for transformation of Art Deco office block into contemporary work space

Clement Windows Group

A great example of 1930s Art Deco architecture, The Douglas Building sits on Great Titchfield Street in London’s West End. Formerly known as The Media Village, Douglas House was acquired by serviced office providers The Office Group (TOG) from landlords The Langham Estate in 2019. TOG together with Note Design Studio transformed the building with a colourful concept that blends the distinctive 1930s features and gives a sense of fluidity, openness and light throughout. As its former name suggests this area of London is a hub for local media and IT businesses operating out of the West End and the brief for the building was to create a flexible workspace where people can feel stimulated by their environment leading to greater productivity. Wellness was also a central focus and the building includes an oxygen room, a parents’ room and a roof terrace which are all integral to enabling and inspiring everyone who enters.Well ventilated and an abundance of natural light have become buzzwords in the COVID era and the more than 300 new steel windows from the Clement EB24 range which were chosen by office fit out and refurbishment contractors Parkeray perfectly facilitate both. Polyester powder coated in Pure White and furnished with Warren handles in a satin chrome finish the windows lend the building a contemporary look on the outside as well as supporting the 21st century ways of working inside.Peter Clement, Chief Executive of Clement Windows Group, commented:“As with all prestigious window replacement projects of this magnitude Clement took part in a competitive tender process. Whilst this was in play we understand that both Parkeray and the client’s team had the opportunity to compare our EB24 steel window to others being considered. We believe it was the quality and overall finish of EB24 combined with an attractive price and fine references that convinced them and the client to proceed with us.”

Merging two former churches in the Bolton area, the development of Harwood Methodist Church has delivered something special for the Church and the wider community. The challenge for the team at Ellis Williams Architects was to design spaces with a practical function but also ensuring that there is a link to tradition. Thanks to its exceptional performance in heavy traffic environments, Tessera Alignment carpet tiles in the Climate colourway was installed in the main worship area – which can hold up to 250 people. As the space also enables the latest AV technology and sound system to support the growing use of band music during regular worship, it is ideal that the carpet tiles can reduce up to 23 dB impact sound.A café space links directly into the worship area with a well-appointed community kitchen serving this and a large community hall. A range of safety flooring from the STEP range provided the ideal solution for these areas, where the Classic Oak effect provided a sophisticated finish in the café and Safestep R11 – for high-risk slip protection – was used in the kitchen. In addition, Surestep Original in Elephant offered a fresh alternative and improved cleaner aesthetic for the bathrooms. Finally, in the multi-use community hall, lobby, circulation spaces and flexible conference rooms, the subtle yet striking marble effect of Marmoleum Real in Slate Grey delivers a beautiful neutral backdrop for a range of functions and events.

Harlequin Floors (British Harlequin plc)

Rambert School of Ballet called upon Harlequin to provide professional standard dance floors for both additional areas. A high quality floor was essential as the correct dance floor makes an important contribution to the safe performance of dancers, reducing the risk of slips and falls, or longer-term stress injuries. Harlequin Cascade with BioCote Antimicrobial Protection was the perfect solution for both areas as it provided added reassurance in a time when it was most needed. Harlequin Liberty was also installed in the marquee.

Forbo Flooring Systems

Sitting on the banks of the River Clyde, the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel (GJCH) has recently been refurbished to a create hygienic, neutral and relaxing environment for guests. Designed by SPACE Solutions, Forbo Flooring Systems’ Allura Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) were specified to fulfil the cleanability and design requirements set by the hotel. The GJHC provides accommodation and conference facilities in the centre of Glasgow and sees a range of guests, from hospital staff and pre/post-operative patients to conference goers and more. As such, it was important that the rooms could satisfy the needs of every guest.SPACE Solutions was tasked to refurbish the 53 rooms, prioritising hygiene and comfort. Gillian Ralston, Senior Architect at SPACE Solutions spoke on the brief they received, saying: “With this project we wanted to create a welcoming, warm and inviting setting, with easily cleanable furniture and flooring. To make this happen, we had to design the rooms in a way that would minimise the risk of contamination for not only the guests, but also the staff who have to clean the rooms after a stay. However, we had to do this without compromising on the aesthetic value of the rooms. That’s why Forbo’s Allura LVT was perfect for this project.”Forbo’s Allura Decibel was specified in the Seagrass Anthracite and Light Grey Seagrass colourways, which both have a similar patterning. As well as this, the grey and green hues matched some of the design inspiration Gillian took from the surrounding environment.Gillian continued: “We chose Allura as it was available in designs that matched the scheme we had in mind, whilst also being easy to clean, fulfilling the hygiene requirements, and providing underfoot comfort. We also specified the Decibel format, which helps to reduce impact sound by 19 dB – an important factor for a hotel, where people expect a good night’s rest!”The Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel won ‘Commended’ in the Forbo Escapes 2021/22 competition. To find out more about Forbo’s Allura LVT products, visit www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/allura or to learn more about the Forbo Escapes competition, visit www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/forboescapes
