Strategic Partnership with Willmott Dixon

Fire & Acoustic Seals Ltd

We’ve been a strategic partner with Willmott Dixon for several years now, ever since our Fire Door FoamTM was mandated on their ‘Yellow Book platform’.  The online manual exists to enable their staff and supply chain partners to use verified products on their projects. To meet their careful criteria we had to demonstrate the foam’s high-performance fire-stopping capabilities when installed between different substrates and timber fire doorsets.  As such a safety-critical component, we also had to provide its third-party test certification from Certifire, IFC and Warringtonfire to assure them of its credentials.Ryan Atkinson, Senior Strategic Buyer at Willmott Dixon comments“Fire and Acoustic Seals Fire Door FoamTM is now listed on our ‘Yellow Book platform’ – Willmott Dixon’s online guide to preferred materials, site installation and workmanship best practice. The foam went through our rigorous diligence checks to ensure it meets the set criteria required to become a specified product in the guide and to become a key component of the Willmott Dixon standard kit of parts. This product represented a rounded view of quality, cost and time which are some of the key factors we consider when selecting products for our ‘Brand Standard’.”Our Fire Door FoamTM has since been used on many Willmott Dixon projects across the UK. One of these is the high-profile Perry Barr Residential Scheme in Birmingham which will provide 1,400 much needed new homes in the city when complete.Ashley Devonport, Senior Quality Manager at Willmott Dixon comments“Fire and Acoustic Seals Fire Door FoamTM has been used to seal the gaps between the door and substrates on the apartments, risers, and communal areas on the prestigious Perry Barr Residential Scheme. This product is mandated on our Yellow Book platform and was selected for its excellent fire-proofing properties and independent test evidence. Julian and the team also provided excellent product training and speedy technical support when needed.”Contact the team for more information about Fire Door FoamTM. 0121 521 2179 | sales@fireandacousticseals.co.uk

India Buildings, Liverpool

Meesons A I Ltd

India Buildings in Liverpool is a 10-storey building with 80,000 square feet of office space. An extensive refurbishment from 2017 to 2021 took place on India Buildings with hopes to house a new tenant of up to 4500 occupants. It is a unique building with distinctive historical features that needed to be retained and achieve Grade A office space.ChallengeThe client had concerns over the access control in India buildings as the new tenant would have a high volume of staff and visitors coming in and out, and wanted to prevent crowding in the reception area. As they were set to be housing civil servants in the regional government hub, there was a higher risk to unauthorised access which they needed to prevent without sacrificing the look of India Building’s historical features. To find out more please follow the linkIndia Buildings HMRC - Case Studies - Meesons

Savill Garden, Windsor

Savill Garden, Windsor

Meesons A I Ltd

The scenic Savill Garden, owned by The Crown Estate, is a 35-acre garden attracting around 5 million visitors annually. Commissioned by George V and created by Eric Savill in 1932, it is popular among nature lovers. Meesons provided physical security solutions to manage visitor flow and ensure only paying customers access the grounds, enhancing safety.Challenge Indoor entrance control is necessary for a ticketed children's play area. External entrance control is essential for garden access. Garden entrance control aims to manage the influx of visitors in and out of the gardens, while also ensuring that only paying guests can enter, reducing instances of tailgatingSolution While working on this project for Savill Garden, it was decided that both our indoor and outdoor speed gates were required. For the outdoor security that leads to the garden, the EasyGate SPT-Outdoor Speed Gates were the perfect choice due to the IP 53 rating, meaning they're robust against different weather conditions, including rain, snow, humidity, and changes in temperature. With this, the client opted for stainless steel speed gates with 3 lanes outdoors and another lane inside the Savill Building that lead to a ticketed children’s play area. In addition to being weather resistant, the outdoor speed gates chosen by the Crown Estate feature specialist integrations for a bespoke finish. It has the all-in-one combined EasyScan access control reader allowing users to present a barcode scanner on smartphones, tablets, or printed tickets to seamlessly grant access to customers.A requirement for the security solution to blend in with the surroundings in both the garden and indoor area meant that they were selected in stainless steel. The classic look prevents them from standing-out to cater to the natural look. On top of this, the Crown Estate have their branding embedded onto the glass to make the bespoke design unique to their business.OutcomeWith the client's choice of rounded top lids, the speed gates have a softened overall look to complement the beautiful gardens.

ZAUN DUO SPORTS RINGS 3G MULTI-PITCH

Zaun Limited

The Rednock School in Dursley in Gloucestershire won the people’s choice and awards for sustainability and architectural excellence in the RIBA Regional Town & Country Awards. Wings emanate from a central red hub, designed to be energy-efficient and natural light and airy.So pioneers of transforming the ‘beacon of sustainable school design’ called in experts to design and install their planned multi-use games area (MUGA) and keep the school open while still pushing forward design boundaries. The SolutionThe 1,400-pupil school turned to artificial sports surfaces specialists AP Thompson and MUGA manufacturer Zaun to provide it with a multi-functional state of the art sports pitch. With limited space and the need to keep open throughout the works, contractors built the new school on the old playing fields then demolished the old buildings to make way for the new MUGA.Zaun recommended its Duo6 Sports fencing with fixings every 200mm instead of 400mm. Each fixing point uses a rubber EPDM insert that insulates the panel from the post and reduces rattle during play to a minimum. This is a solution Zaun has developed for schools to minimise noise from outdoor pitches distracting classes being taught indoors.Clever siting of goal recesses makes the MUGA ideal for a full size international standard football pitch or four concurrent 5 a side matches across the width. In addition, Zaun incorporated gates at strategic locations and 4.4m high fencing behind the goal areas to improve ball retention. After four decades, the reincarnation of the school cost £38 million in total and includes a TV studio able to broadcast live to every corner of the school.

The MultiFence PAS 68 can stop a 7.5-tonne truck at both 30mph and 40mph. It has been designed to mitigate the security risks at all sites of critical importance, using leading industry technologies to combat attacks by vehicles. It combines the attributes of our standard system with additional testing to ensure it meets the stringent quality standards relating to vehicle restraint systems of BS EN 1317 Part 2. It can be used on both soft and hard ground.Featuring TVCB blocks approved by the Highways Agency for use, it is ideal for security applications at major events, as below-ground foundations are not required. Our RDS PAS68 crash fence system consists of panels and posts installed and removed within minutes. The system uses an RDS block with the appropriate post arrangement. Our RDS PAS68 fence system has been crash-tested and rated to BSI PAS68:2010 standard. This means it can stop 2.5-tonne and 7.5-tonne vehicles. The system provides the product attributes normally only found in permanent installations. In addition, its simple deployment means the on-site disruption usually associated with installing and removing a fence line is kept to a minimum.Zaun also supplied our HiSec 358 anti-climb mesh fencing to combat the issue of intruders being able to scale the fence.InnovationCPNI and the Government were concerned about the threat of a ladder or other climbing aids used to lean against CCTV columns, making it easier to scale the fencing and gain entry into the secure area.Zaun’s solution was to create a number seven style CCTV column and base, which is completely self-supported and mobile and sits back from the fence line. Zaun’s design team created an innovative CCTV column featuring a unique number seven shape. This design meant the CCTV column would project over and outside the fence line, providing excellent visibility and obliterating the external climbing aid threat. The column was constructed from a custom-rolled, lightweight profile; it was also very easily installed on-site. The unique design also included a concrete base comprising a folded steel shell filled with concrete poured on-site. It incorporated forklift holes, ensuring the base is mobile and relocatable easily using a forklift or Moffatt on site.At the top of the base, a fixing system was designed, which allowed the columns to be attached and pivoted and then subsequently raised into the upright position with ease. This system allowed the CCTV installers to mount their cameras and other equipment to the top of the column at ground level before raising the column into place and negates the need for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms or MEWP’s.Zaun designed and manufactured more than 700 CCTV columns and bases to be used at the Commonwealth Games and are deployable for other events.

Luxury Basement Extension, South London

Newton Waterproofing Systems

Considering the large size of the basement area and its proximity to the River Thames, Newton Specialist Contractor Stonehouse were called in to provide a complete waterproofing system for the structure. At this private property in South London, the plan was to build a new basement extending below the entire footprint of the house and into the rear garden, incorporating a swimming pool, recreational spaces and wine cellar. However, considering the close proximity to the River Thames and the high water table, Newton Specialist Contractor Stonehouse were called in to provide a complete waterproofing system for the entire structure.Considering the size of the basement area, the high water table, the geographical location close to the River Thames, and the fact that the structure was created using underpinning, the risk of water penetration in this basement was extremely high. Stonehouse recommended the most failsafe solution, the Newton CDM System.Firstly, they installed Newton 508 membrane to all internal walls and the floor, using Newton's ancillary products to fix the membrane securely and seal the system. Drainage channels were also created using Newton Basedrain, feeding into a sump chamber containing two NP750 pumps, a higher capacity model capable of dealing with large volumes of water. Finally, where the basement extended beyond the house's footprint, a liquid waterproofing membrane was used on the new external roof.Stonehouse is one of Newton's oldest and most experienced specialist contractors, and they showed their expertise here by delivering a dry, safe basement for the client that could then be transformed into a beautiful new part of their home. Furthermore, the installation was backed by Stonehouse's 10-year guarantee, for complete peace of mind.

Hospital Specifies TITAN Lite™ 120:60 From FIREFLY™

FIREFLY™ TBA

Hospital Specifies TITAN Lite™ 120:60 From FIREFLY™An 18-month contract being carried out by a leading UK fire contractor has involved installing large quantities of the TITAN Lite™ 120:60, manufactured by TBA FIREFLY™, to create fire barriers above ceiling voids throughout many parts of the hospital. The hospital has 660 beds and provides medical and surgical care to a third of a million people with the building dating back to before the beginning of the Second World War. The refurbishment work, concluded at the end of November 2021, was being carried out by Plymouth based Ventro Ltd. whose operatives have had to work in many areas during the evenings and weekends in order to avoid disruption to the hospital’s everyday activities, including the treatment of patients.Following early appraisals of the fire protection requirements within the ageing property and taking into account the large quantities of different mechanical services to be accommodated into the upgrades, the hospital’s estates department decided to raise the specification for the work from 30 minutes integrity rating to a full two hours. The Site Agent for Ventro, John Roberts, commented: “As a specialist fire contractor working across the whole of the UK and beyond, we have employed FIREFLY™ products on many projects over the years and expect to continue doing so. In the early stages of this contract, which began on site in May 2020, it was thought APOLLO Lite™ 30 minutes would be appropriate, but the hospital then switched this to TITAN Lite™ 120:60. We have been installing the TITAN Lite™ in many parts of the hospital, including most recently in the ceiling voids over the kitchens. This has been done by fixing metal angles across the soffits and then using the special tape and staples to secure the fabric to it. Despite the large number of services making the number of penetrations to be deal with quite challenging, our teams find the FIREFLY™ relatively easy to install.”FIREFLY™ TITAN Lite™ 120:60 has been developed as a flexible fire barrier to provide compartmentation of larger concealed spaces within different types of buildings including factories, warehouses and railway stations.By offering 120 minutes integrity and 60 minutes insulation, TITAN Lite™ 120:60 exceeds the minimum requirements relating to Fire Barriers as detailed in the UK Building Regulations: Approved Document B (Fire Safety). Firefly is manufactured using specially treated woven glass fibre fabrics.

A centre of dentistry competence ranging from basic care to research and teaching is being built. Every year, dentists, dental and preventive care assistants and dental hygienists will be administering more than 80,000 treatments in the 5-storey building. The staircases were a key area of focus on this project, both for architectural reasons and in light of the strict sound insulation requirements. All staircases and landings have a bare architectural concrete finish. Compliance with the requirement of an impact sound level delta ΔLn,w* of 28 dB was mandatory in order to protect the quiet areas (e.g. treatment rooms, lecture halls, library, etc.) from distracting noise.Products from the Schöck Tronsole® range have been implemented for acoustic insulation. These impact sound insulation products enable a structural connection of the staircases and landings with no acoustic bridges whatsoever. Polytrol Used To Revive a 1996 Ifor Williams Horsebox

Owatrol UK Ltd

Recently we have received a review from a customer that used Polytrol to revive their Ifor Williams horsebox.Andy was looking to revive the faded colour of his Ifor Williams horsebox and decided to try a sample of our Polytrol colour restorer. He even supplied us with before and after images so we can see how well it worked. Here’s what Andy had to say;I have been an Engineer all my life and have used many products that purport to do unequalled repair or unrivalled transformations. But I cannot remember ever being so impressed with a product. After using the sample pot of Polytrol colour restorer I thought to take some pictures of the project. The whole trailer was thoroughly cleaned with a pressure washer along with the roof and fibre glass front roof panel. Mould and algae were removed with a scrubbing brush and Cillit Bang mould remover. The side panels are painted flat aluminium sheet which had faded quite considerably over the years. Their appearance was also marred by a previous owner putting transfers on them, which I removed only to discover a darker silhouette, which further spoiled its appearance. To the painted panels, I applied Polytrol liberally with a brush and then left for 15 Mins. After this, I then used a cloth soaked with Polytrol but with excess squeezed out, to smooth out the excess on the surface and provide an even light coating to dry. I treated the plastic mudguards the same way with fabulous results. For the “dimple” surfaced aluminium roof and front panel, I found a Scotchbrite pad and soaked it with Polytrol. I then wiped it off once again with a saturated cloth and left it to dry.I applied the Polytrol on a pleasant day with no excessive sunshine and all was touch dry within 2 hours. By the following day it was perfectly dry and ready for new OEM Decals. The pictures show it all, what an outstanding transformation.

Using Polytrol to revive a dull and faded garage door

Using Polytrol to revive a dull and faded garage door

Owatrol UK Ltd

We’re always so pleased when we hear from customers who have opted to use our products for their projects. When we received an email and some impressive before and after photos, from one such customer who had used Polytrol colour restorer to revive his garage door, we’re not exaggerating when we say that there was an audible buzz of appreciation in the Owatrol office as we took in the transformation. It was then that we knew that we had to share how Brian (our happy customer) had achieved this result, so that our other customers could benefit, too.First, clean your garage doorIf you want to replicate Brian’s success, it’s important to ensure that your garage door is prepped before application. Your door must be clean and free of any dirt, grease, mildew or grime.A bit of elbow grease and a bowl of soapy water is usually all you’ll need to do the job. However, if there’s any mildew on your garage door, scrub on a 50:50 bleach and water solution, leave it for 10 minutes, then rinse it off.If you have any polishes or waxes on your garage door, you will need to remove these too. Before moving on to the next step, ensure that your garage door is completely dry.Now it’s time to apply PolytrolA deep penetrating oil, Polytrol works by penetrating the surface of your door and re-wetting the pigments. This restores the colour that has been lost over the years, through exposure to pollution, rain and sunlight.Using a brush or a cloth and only working in sections that you can complete in 10-20 minutes, apply a liberal layer of Polytrol. As you work, if you notice any particularly matt and shiny patches, it means that the surface is absorbing Polytrol unevenly. If this happens, just move any surplus oil over to the matt areas.Allow the product to work for 10-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean, lint-free cloth.
