Orbit Housing’s Fordham House in Stratford-upon-Avon aimed to raise the bar for rented accommodation. Although initially a social housing provider, Orbit now refers to itself as a “developing housing association”, and Fordham House was designed for private rental by key workers in the town.Providing enhanced protection against noise and boasting a superior maintenance and repair strategy, much of the budget for these above-and-beyond features came from the specification of Modus windows in place of the aluminium frames originally specified.
How to tilt escalating costs while still turning heads

When construction and development group Bowmer & Kirkland needed to ensure a £19million project for the YMCA stayed in budget, they asked Eurocell for advice. Making short work of value engineering analysis for the project, Eurocell engineers identified the tight budget could be made to work even harder. By changing the window spec from aluminium to PVC-U in the shape of their Modus Tilt & Turn profile, they could lower costs by up to 37% and increase thermal performance, without altering the design.

The PVC insert on the tread has been designed to provide additional slip resistance which is ideal for the waterpark. The NTC nosing meets DDA Guidelines and Building regulations.

Howe Green
GRAHAM construction specified a number of Howe Green’s 5000 Series Floor Access Covers for the £19 million refurbishment of Lews Castle.
The light duty aluminium covers were specified to provide access to underfloor services, located within the corridors on the first floor of the castle.
The covers were specified with a brass edge, giving a high level of aesthetic appeal, and then infilled with carpet or ceramic tiles depending on their location.
The brass show edge is continuously secured which means there are no fasteners to rust or break.
Barrier Matting with Combination Inserts Create Safe and Hygienic Entrances at Balfour Hospital

To create safe and hygienic entrances at the new £65m Balfour Hospital in Orkney, architects specified INTRAform DM with a combination of inserts.
The state-of-the-art rural general hospital serves the entire 21,000 strong population of the islands. With a traditional need for shelter against extreme weather conditions, a robust entrance matting system is essential to ward against slips.
To create an effective barrier, the multiple entrances at The Balfour Hospital use a combination of fibre and rubber inserts within a single aluminium recessed system.
The Ecco concertina loft ladder is the ideal solution for small ceiling openings

Manufactured from light-weight, durable aluminium components, the Ecco concertina loft ladder is easy to operate yet still offers excellent performance. Capable of supporting loads of 150 kg per step, it is also tested to EN 14975 (DN 4570). It is supplied as a ready to fit unit for ceiling apertures as small as 800mm long by 550mm wide. Furthermore, the ladder is fitted within an insulated and airtight wooden hatch box.

The Ascent Aluminium companionway / ships ladder system was specified to create a permanent safe access route to the roof of refrigeration units within Aldi stores for maintenance personnel. A companionway was chosen as it is deemed preferable to a vertical ladder where frequent access is required. The ladder designed in accordance with BS 4211:2005 + A1 2008 was manufactured in accordance with CE 1090 factory production control procedures. The ladders have been installed within around 700 stores across the UK.

The Ascent Aluminium fixed ladder system was specified to create a permanent safe access route to the roof for maintenance personnel. As the fixed access ladder was to be installed in a prominent location adjacent the buildings front entrance there was a requirement to ensure that access was restricted with the specification of an anti-climb ladder guard & bottom hoop cover. Hoops were provided throughout for fall protection. The ladder was designed in accordance with BS EN 4211:2005 + A1 2008 and was manufactured in accordance with CE 1090 factory production control procedures.

The UK’s leading access hatch manufacturer Surespan has launched a new range of heavy-duty access covers which are designed to support loading up to 16 tonnes. The aluminium alloy hatches can take loadings ranging from 5 to 19 tonnes (FACTA class B to E) and are available in standard single and double leaf sizes. They are gas spring operated, making them easy to open, and come with a range of locking options, including Surespan’s unique locking box.

The Multi-Link-Panel system glazed with Georgian wired polycarbonate from pioneering polycarbonate roofing supplier Twinfix was specified by Network Rail for the entrance canopy element of a £1 million refurbishment of historic Wigan Wallgate station in Lancashire.
The glazing panels, each comprising fast-track “fix and link” aluminium structural bars glazed with 6mm solid Georgian wired polycarbonate, were pre-assembled at Twinfix’s factory in Warrington, Cheshire, for delivery to site for installation by specialist contractor Everlast Rail.

The new, two-story building, home to over 100 student clubs and societies, acts as the social hub for the 13000+ students at the university & replaces the old 1960’s Building. The Universities brief was to incorporate the local area into the project using images of Birmingham City Skyline. The Challenge Offer a full height cubicle system, suitable for the environment and to a specification befittng the digital imagery. Digitally render images onto Laminate and apply to the façade of the full height system. Manage the precise fabrication process through the factory. The Solution Excelsior’s Flush 30 Cubicle System encompasses a rebated aluminium frame to the doors and pilasters. The aluminium edge detail provides a robust trim and looks innovative within this modern building, an unrivalled system within the washroom market.The images, supplied by the client were digitally rendered onto laminate by Formica Younique and applied to the façade of a full height Flush system.Max McLoughlin, CEO of the Student Union comments: ‘We want the building to make students feel proud to be at Aston University. From a design perspective, we wanted the students to feel fully immersed in life on campus & we are very happy with the result’.
Durham University
Proteus Facades
A careful combination of A2 fire rated soffit panels, rainscreen cladding and mesh screens from Proteus Facades has helped band together the impressive new £42m Sciences Centre at Durham University.
Based within the grounds of the Upper Mountjoy Campus, the new Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science building has been developed to create synergy between the two departments, which have been earmarked for significant growth within the Durham University Strategy – 2017-2027.
The building features state-of-the-art teaching facilities and office space, including a specialist IT Lab with a designated server room, a 120-seat tiered lecture theatre and tutorial rooms. While a café and breakout spaces, as well as four enclosed courtyards make up the communal areas.
Creating a bright space for students, staff and visitors to meet and relax, Proteus Facades manufactured striking 2.0mm Aluminium Proteus IP interlocking planks with a PPC Traffic White Matte (RAL 9016) finish for use on the façades of the four internal courtyards.
GSS Architecture chose the Proteus IP aluminium PPC in Traffic White because it accentuates and reflects natural light creating an enhanced ambience in the teaching spaces that face onto the courtyards, whilst complementing the glass curtain walling system.

This exciting riverside development in South East London is breathing new life into a former brownfield site that was once home to some of the largest munition factories in the UK. Appropriately named Royal Arsenal Riverside, the site comprises a mix of new build residential, retail, and commercial elements alongside the sympathetic refurbishment of several listed buildings.We are proud to have supplied the aluminium fenestration package for a new phase of the development which has seen the creation of a new 10 storey residential building containing 112 apartments.The new building has been constructed to work in harmony with one of the Grade II listed buildings and to complement the heritage of the site. This involved the demolition of an old energy centre building and the careful renovation of two existing warehouse buildings to provide space for commercial use.The mix of old and new, and residential and commercial, has been harmonised with the use of our slim line SF52 curtain wall system and low maintenance SPW600 aluminium windows. The curtain walling screens also incorporate feature curved heads along the spine of the building to pay homage to the scheme’s industrial heritage.The high profile project was designed by architects Corstorphine & Wright for Berkeley Homes and is one of the latest London based contacts to be undertaken in collaboration with our supply chain partner Soundcraft.
Plot C1, English Cities Fund (ECF), New Bailey, Salford Quays

8300 SQM of Optima FC+, Optima FC+ perforated panels and Optima IPC (soffits) have been used in the completion of the 23-storey New Bailey building in Salford Quays.Optima FC+ was selected for a number of reasons on this project.Predominantly, it is an incredibly user friendly system – panels can be quickly and easily adjusted on site and the system can be fixed top down, or bottom up with individual panel removal and replacement. This makes Optima FC+ a highly desirable choice for designers and installers.However, the panels were specifically adapted for this project to enable a completely secret fix system, as per the architects vision. Therefore the top return fold was increased to 50mm instead of 38mm. This allowed for the security fixings to be completely concealed by the panel above, allowing the customer to easily fit the panels from ground up.Optima FC+ perforated panels were chosen as an additional aesthetic feature and Optima IPC was selected for the soffit areas as the architect requested a secret fix system.A bespoke window reveal and bracket was included in the panel design. This allowed for an extended side return which was used to hook on the panels and enable a secret fix. The Optima IPC system was perfect for this part of the design as it enables hidden mechanical fixings and is a cost-effective solution using 2.0mm aluminium.Black PPC aluminium was used as backing trays to enhance the appearance of the perforations, prevent views through the perforations and close off the cavity.Optima FC+ has been independently tested and certified to meet CWCT rigorous specification for rainscreen cladding and has been fire tested to BS8414-2 and classified to BR135 for high rise buildings. This makes it the perfect solution for Plot C1, now the tallest residential building in the New Bailey plot.Plot C1, which features a six-storey podium with an exclusive rooftop garden terrace for the wellbeing of residents, incorporates a number of sustainability measures including surface water drainage attenuation, minimising off site spoil disposal, reduced water consumption.The project has been shortlisted in the 2022 Facade Awards UK for ‘Best use of a rainscreen system using aluminium’.
Orchard Village, London

The former Mardyke Estate in Rainham, east London, has undergone a substantial transformation to make way for a new residential development, Orchard Village. Circle Housing has invested £80million to redevelop the old housing estate, creating 555 new homes to meet local affordable housing needs. Designed by PRP Architects and developed in its entirety by Willmott Dixon, the project specified AluK aluminium curtain walling, window and door systems throughout all four phases, three of which have been completed.
Roscoe Building, Manchester University
TRC Windows
Built in 1964, the Roscoe Building is the hub of the Faculty of Science at Manchester University. Designed by Cruickshank and Seward, it was named after 1860s Professor of Chemistry, Henry Roscoe.
In 2009 we supplied the replacement windows for a refurbishment project undertaken by architects Farrell & Clark. The original windows were of German origin and advanced for their time: center pivot windows, to maximize light in the laboratories.
To keep a consistent look we supplied the same style of windows but aluminium clad on the external face for ease of maintenance; and double glazed for energy efficiency.
Contemporary panelling and an Evolution™ finish make a perfect combination.

Gregg’s has an eye-catching livery with its logo of large white lettering, four orange coloured blocks and the sky blue background
The façade was updated with 2mm aluminium cassette panelling coated in Evolution ‘Peat Fire’. This shade is similar to Corten but there is no run-off or staining of surrounding material. The panelling has feature perforations which create an interesting effect, enhanced by the consistent inconsistency of the weathered steel appearance of the coating. The façade will look smart for years with a guarantee of up to 25 years for gloss, colour and adhesion.
Nine Elms Point, London (2017)

Nine Elms Point is a new apartment complex in London. A part of the project was to offer a green space of landscaped gardens for residents, to enhance the community feel. This included many walkways which required seating. Artform were consulted regarding the supply of standard products to the residential area, which needed a bespoke feel. The award winning Multiplicity seating, with its cast aluminium support structure was suggested, as this could allow for a selection of alternate timber to be used, giving the client flexibility and confidence that it would blend with the landscape.
New Grey Substrate

Deceuninck is launching its new grey substrate profile this summer. Adding to 26 colourways already available from stock, the substrate is RAL 7021 (Black Grey).

The Gateway Student Accommodation

Nearly 600 PVC-U tilt-turn windows in the Profile 22 system were chosen for The Gateway, a £22million student accommodation in Lincoln.
The tilt-turn windows were fabricated by Profile 22’s Approved Window Contractor, Polar Windows, using the fully chamfered system, foiled with smooth finish RAL 7016 Anthracite grey as a special order to colour match the aluminium design scheme.
The work was carried out in line with strict deadlines, and the project was completed in good time ready for the beginning of the academic year.
London Victoria Tube Station

A Noracon Travelling Gantry was installed to the full width and length of the North Ticket Hall suspended from aluminium monorails concealed within the ceiling.
The Gantry was designed to travel parallel to the escalators beneath utilising a rope driven trolley which removed the requirement for any electrical connections.
To enable the platform to travel the full length. part of the gantry was designed to become detached from the main section, allowing it to be “jettisoned” at the point where the new lift obstructs travel. The two sections become independent allowing the gantry to travel the remaining distance.

The Hyatt hotel chain set itself the goal of building a new hotel in the vicinity of the Corferias Convention Centre in Bogotá.
One key decisions in the project was the selection of a system for the control of dirt, dust and moisture entering the building, to ensure maximum care of floor coverings.
The Genesis Trakmat® system. With it’s aluminium profiling system with PVC links, which makes it 100% roll-up, would guarantee its easy manoeuvrability and ease of maintenance, as well as maximum softness to the contact of the shoes and a minimum noise emission when passing guests.
The Fish & Chip Shop, Islington, London

A Howe Green 5000 Series Aluminium Access Cover was supplied to The Fish & Chip Shop in Islington.
An unobtrusive access solution was required to cover the kitchen’s essential mains drainage services and provide fast access to them for easy maintenance.
The access cover was fitted into quarry-tiled steps leading to the kitchen. It was designed to be virtually invisible to prevent any slips or trips – essential within a busy restaurant environment.
The cover is double-sealed which means water or bacteria ingress is preventable ensuring that the highest hygiene standards can be maintained.
Unit 216, Cambridge Science Park

Kawneer’s aluminium AA®100 zone-drained curtain wall and thermally superior AA®720 entrance doors feature on all elevations of Unit 216 at the UK’s leading science park, while AA®190 TB severe-duty doors have been used on the main entrance. The unit was taken back to a concrete shell and rebuilt with a brick and glazed façade by main contractor Hutton Construction and is now the new home for Amgen, one of the world’s largest independent biotechnology companies.
Oundle School Sports Centre - mono-pitch rooflights

LAMILUX designed, supplied and installed eight LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 mono-pitch rooflights at Oundle School Sports Centre. Seven of the rooflights, were positioned over the 50 metre swimming pool, adding an abundance of natural light, with special sun protective glazing to eliminate overheating. A special coating was applied to the aluminium profiles to protect them from corrosion within the chlorine environment.
The eighth rooflight, an 18m x 6m trapeze shape, illuminates the atrium at the flagship of the school’s sports masterplan.
High performance metal column casings at Porsche Centre Preston

Metal column casings standing almost 6 metres high are being used at the Porsche Centre in Preston, Lancashire, to conceal interior structural steelwork and utilities within the two-storey main showroom and office area.Manufactured from 3mm thick aluminium with a grey RAL 9007 PPC finish, the twelve 375mm diameter metal column casings, from the Pendock MET-CL range, incorporate colour matched joint covers, header and skirting collars infills, to integrate with Porsche’s corporate colour scheme.

Neaco’s semi-structural glass balustrade and aluminium decking have been extensively specified at The Slate, the University of Warwick’s impressive conference centre occupying a waterside setting in the heart of the campus near Coventry.
Designed by Associated Architects and built by Speller Metcalfe, the facility comprises 650 sqm of flexible event space.The building maximises views of the adjoining lake with a predominance of glazing and no pillars or fixtures to obscure the outlook. Neaco’s balustrade lines the full-length of a front terrace overlooking the lake and accommodates the view with clear glass panel infills.
Neaco decking chosen for another landmark bridge

Neaco’s aluminium decking has been specified for another landmark bridge project at Bécon-les-Bruyères train station which forms part of the extensive redevelopment of the Zac des Bruyeres Courbevoie in Paris.
The striking new footbridge is the key feature of first phase of modernisation carried out by contractors, Groupe GCC. It now facilitates access to routes for travelers and allows residents the passage of Asnieres-sur-Seine at Courbevoie. Bécon-les-Bruyères is one of the busiest stations in the suburbs, with more than 20,000 passengers per day.
Neaco’s balconies and balustrade offer visual appeal

Neaco have supplied a wide-ranging balcony balustrade and internal balustrade specification at a development of luxury waterside apartments in Guisborough, North Yorkshire.
The company’s glass panelled Juliet balconies and bespoke walk-on balcony designs are featured alongside balustrade installed to an interior mezzanine and a communal roof terrace. Handrails and balustrade have been precision-manufactured in aluminium featuring a powder coated finish in one of Neaco’s standard metallic colours. The rails and stanchions combine superbly with tinted toughened glass infills for a stylish modern aesthetic.

In Vlaardingen Museum, the Netherlands, old meets new. The use of concrete, aluminium and glass creates a powerful sense of open space and transparency. The many level changes and loft-like spaces meant it was important to find a balustrade solution unobstructed by a conventional handrail or metal grip. The Easy Glass Pro structural glass balustrade offered the ability to make fine adjustments to the positioning of each glass panel from the installation side – invaluable when being installed on the various sections of finished concrete flooring levels.

Tunnel Access Hatches - Edmonton London

Surespan designed and installed four revolutionary new hatches inside the Fore Street tunnel on the A406 North Circular Road in Edmonton, London. The hatches are the first of their kind in the UK and have been specifically designed for Transport for London to not only withstand the weight of major volumes of traffic but also allow safe and easy access to the wells beneath.They are currently being trialled in Fore Street tunnel for 12 months. Made of aluminium, they are capable of withstanding D400 loading yet can be easily opened by one operative.

The Experimentarium museum in Hellerup, Denmark has been listed as one of the ‘Greatest Places to visit 2018’ by Time Magazine. Following an extensive renovation, guests can now dive into a virtual submarine safari, zoom in on the world of microorganisms or travel through the Tunnel of Senses to explore sight, touch, smell and sound.
Here, architects CEBRA have specified Troldtekt wood wool panelling extensively throughout. These panels, in white and grey, counterpoint the museum’s raw and industrial feel and contrast with the design elements of the copper, aluminium and glass.
