ASF were approached by artists Lucy Strachan and Fred Baier who had produced conceptual drawings of laser cut tree grilles. Alongside these drawings was a brief that the guards should fit with invisible fixings into the ASF 303 cast iron tree grille. ASF took these concepts forward and produced a set of tree guards that met the needs of both the artistic concept and the required practical applications. The guards were first laser profiled and then rolled to the desired diameter. The guard halves then had to be hand fettled and blended so the pattern carried perfectly through 360 degrees.

ASF were approached by Bradford Metropolitan Borough Council to manufacture railings to design drawings that they had completed. Firstly the drawings required turning form design drawings into working documents, so ASF produced a full set of cut drawings and GA's as well 3D models for approval purposes. The panels were individually hand made and hand polished and fitted to site by a third party (also identified by ASF). Polishing was carried out to 2k standards which dramatically decreases the risk of discoloration. Freedom creates a kitchen for independent living in Chelmsford

Freedom creates a kitchen for independent living in Chelmsford

Symphony Group

For Sheila Dearns, a former language teacher for 32 years, living with MS meant that as her condition progressed, she found her kitchen ill-equipped to cope with her changing needs.Sheila’s home is a bungalow in the centre of Chelmsford, where she has lived since 1996. It was when her MS began to leave her with little energy that Sheila decided to retire in 2010 and since then, she is finding it harder to ‘load bear’ and now classes herself as a full-time wheelchair user.It was when Sheila was left an inheritance from a relative that she began to consider making some practical changes to her home. The former kitchen was narrow with no accessible workspace to prepare meals. In fact, Sheila had to chop vegetables on the dining room table instead. With little energy and as a full-time wheelchair user, Sheila needed something to change in order for her to continue living independently at home. Her friend’s sister, Teresa Shaw; who owns the company Onyx Rehabilitation Ltd  that helps people with life-changing injuries, put Sheila in touch with leading designer of accessible kitchens Adam Thomas of the Adam Thomas Consultancy. It’s thanks to Adam’s input and collaboration that Freedom by Symphony have transformed the lives of so many people by empowering them with a sense of independence, enjoying accessible kitchens that are both practical to use and stylish to look at.Adam worked with kitchen retailer Blaines Interiors to create an accessible kitchen for Sheila that now works as the hub of her home. The project began by knocking down the wall between the former kitchen and living room to create one larger, open-plan space. Sheila moved out while the work was being done and the result is a fully wheelchair-friendly area with widened access to the garden, too.“Working with Blaines, we designed a fully functional and accessible kitchen,” says Adam, “which now includes I-move pull down baskets, allowing Sheila to access top shelves in wall cabinets without standing up from a seated position along with a 2.4m Rise & Fall worktop, a lovely feature that Sheila can adjust to suit her height so that she can use the worktop, sink with front access tap and hob when seated in her wheelchair. It’s a really flexible solution, as it can also be used by family and friends in the rise position. We also included a lowered dining table on hairpin legs for wheelchair access underneath, a pull and twist larder for easy access to dried ingredients, corner Le Mans storage and a combination oven, which suits Sheila’s style of cooking.”Sheila and Adam worked closely with Anthony Elsey from Blaines Interiors, who was a wonderful source of inspiration and ideas. Sheila wanted her kitchen to be calm and soothing with a brightly tiled splashback to add a statement look. “As a one-stop shop, Blaines takes clients on a seamless journey from conception to completion,” says Anthony. “This includes personalised consultation, expert advice, meticulous planning, flawless installation and the final finishing touches. Our team of designers are not only creative but also empathetic and supportive, ensuring that every client’s needs are met. They take pride in designing kitchens that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also affordable and accessible to all.”Design manager Anthony has experience in working with young people and adults with special educational needs and disabilities and is fully committed to serving Freedom clients by creating fully functional and accessible kitchens. Blaines Interiors has two Freedom showrooms with four operational displays, where customers can explore and experience their designs first-hand. Their reach extends across the entire Eastern region, serving Norfolk, Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.Sheila now has the hub of the home she really wanted. “I can now cook for myself and use all the facilities,” she says. “My energy also now lasts longer too, as everything is made so much simpler for me.”

King Edward VI Northfield School For Girls, Birmingham

NBB Outdoors

King Edward VI Northfield School For Girls, a distinguished educational institution, presented NBB Outdoors with a clear project brief aimed at enhancing their outdoor seating areas within a recreational courtyard. The principal project objectives were as follows:  Sheltered Outdoor Seating: The school aspired to establish a comfortable and welcoming outdoor seating area for students and staff, facilitating various activities such as dining, socialising, and studying. Protection from adverse weather conditions, including rain and sun, was a paramount requirement. Aesthetic Integration: It was of utmost importance that the new shelters seamlessly harmonised with the existing school environment. This included integrating with the school’s modern aesthetics characterised by uniform colour schemes in the main building’s composite panelling and guttering. Durability and Longevity: Given the investment in these outdoor shelters, the school desired structures that would stand the test of time and endure even the harshest conditions.  To fulfil the unique requirements of King Edward VI Northfield School For Girls, NBB Outdoors devised and implemented a bespoke solution encompassing the following key features:   Bespoke Design: Covering a combined 112 square metres and perfectly spanning the full width of the paved courtyard, the two shelters provide ample space for students and staff to enjoy the outdoors comfortably. Additionally, each shelter has been sub-surfaced with the paving slabs reinstated to maintain a clean finish. Rainwater Management: Guttering and downpipes were thoughtfully incorporated into the shelter design to prevent rainwater from cascading over the shelter’s edges. This feature ensured that the outdoor seating area remained dry even during inclement weather. Aesthetic Consistency: The shelters were finished in Signal Brown RAL 8002, in keeping with the school’s modern aesthetic. This careful colour coordination seamlessly integrated the new shelters into the existing surroundings, creating a unified and visually appealing environment. Corrosion Resistance: The freestanding shelters were treated with NBB Outdoors’ industry-leading Triplex anti-corrosion finish, providing exceptional resistance to corrosion and environmental stressors. This finish guaranteed the shelters’ durability for 25 years.  The new outdoor seating areas have contributed to an improved campus experience, providing students with a versatile and welcoming space to engage in various activities. By aligning with the school’s aesthetic preferences, ensuring durability, and creating comfortable outdoor spaces, NBB Outdoors has exceeded the expectations of the educational institution.

Following a thorough site survey, and discussions on the best shelter to suit the brief, it was decided that two Bespoke Winterbourne Freestanding Shelters would be perfect for their requirements. The first measured L10m x D5.6m x H3.15m and included guttering to one side and kneelers to the middle posts to offer extra support whilst reducing the number of posts. The second shelter measured L14.1m x D4.3m x H3.1/2.5m and included guttering to one side, as well as 100% recycled plastic picket fencing around the perimeter completed with a gate to allow for teachers and pupils to exit and re-enter the area. Both shelters were treated with market-leading ‘Triplex’ multi-layer powder coating in Green RAL 6026 to guarantee their shelter for 25 years and compliment the scenic surroundings. On completion of the project, Lisa Weald, Premises Manager at Forest Row Church of England Primary School contacted NBB to let us know their installation was exactly what they hoped for, saying: “I feel compelled to write and let you know how amazing the team that came to install our canopies were. From the moment they arrived they were professionalism personified. They worked as a well-oiled machine, courteous, skilled, and efficient… I would highly recommend them to anyone.”
