The glamorous and newly reopened North Bar can be found on the third floor of the world famous Royal Albert Hall. This light, open and spacious venue offers stunning views over the Albert Memorial – a backdrop which also provided the inspiration for the new Amtico flooring design. The renovation of the 100m2 floor area needed to make impact and create an eye-catching feature so a bespoke pattern was designed. It laid over the top of the original flooring to preserve it and protect from damage.

When Tenpin decided to reconfigure the layout of its leisure complex in Hounslow and embark on a complete refurbishment of the premises, it was in need of practical flooring that could cope with a high level of footfall, and was also available in a vibrant selection of colours.

Comprising 546 rooms in total, most of the space is divided into 'twodios' - two en-suite bedrooms that share a small kitchenette. Old Oak also includes a range of dedicated communal facilities and spaces including a restaurant, library, lounge and spa, where they have used a selection of natural, warming tones including Parisian Pine, Cellar Oak and Aged Timber. All of these areas are designed to bring people together: from quiet spaces to work in, through to open spaces for socialising.

Amtico Signature LVT helped Toggl create the trendy, dynamic environment that would encourage staff to keep their minds active and creative. Amtico was chosen for the wide range of colours and textures that can be used in different laying patterns. Having specified Amtico many times before, Tiiu has always been pleased with the creative results achieved.

THE PROJECTThe village of Comrie is located towards the western edge of the Perth & Kinross Council area, approximately 40 kilometres west of Perth in Scotland. The waterproofing system used to cover the buried water tank at Comrie Distribution Service Reservoir (DSR) was many years old and had failed. As part of the ongoing Scottish Water SR21 framework, Fosroc and The Fraser Bruce Group have developed a wide range of solutions for waterproofing water tanks that have been proposed and agreed by both Morrison Construction and Scottish Water. This project involved removing the soil overburden and the existing waterproofing system, before mechanically preparing the deck and applying sheet membrane.THE SOLUTIONOnce the overburden and existing waterproofing were removed it was apparent that there was severe ponding on the tank roof. The decision was taken to prepare the deck and apply an external self-leveler to prevent the ponding of water. The perimeter and upstand detailing was carried out before Fosroc’s self-adhesive sheet membrane Proofex 3000 was applied to the primed, horizontal surface. The surface was then protected with Proofex Sheetdrain 80, a drainage and protection membrane. After the membrane was laid, the access hatch upstands received two coats of Nitocote CM210 before more Proofex 3000 was applied and terminated just below the height of the new overburden. The access hatches were then sealed in place with Nitoseal MS600.THE BENEFITSProofex 3000 membrane, which is cold applied and comes in 1m x 20m rolls, is self-adhesive, thereby reducing the amount of product and application time. The applicator was able to cover large areas in far less time. The membrane is made from cross laminated HDPE film to protect against damage, while still being sufficiently flexible for detailing around corners. It is resistant to ground water, soluble sulfates and chlorides, offering robust protection from aggressive ground salts. Its use with Sheetdrain achieved a high quality, reliable installation compliant with EN 13707:2004. By combining the use of Nitocote CM210 and Proofex 3000, Fosroc were able to provide solutions for both exposed and buried areas of the tank with no compatibility issues between the products.

We recently collaborated with construction company Corinthian on a brand-new housing development in Cornwall, providing timber supplies to be used for external cladding.

THE PROJECTKirriemuir DSR (Distribution Service Reservoir) is located close to Backwater Reservoir in a relatively remote area of northwest Angus, Scotland. The reservoir supplies the populations of Angus, Dundee, parts of Perth and Kinross with drinking water. The DSR is essentially a large water tank with an exposed roof which is vulnerable to erosion and wet weather damage. It is one of many DSRs in Scotland managed by Scottish Water. Morrison Construction appointed the Fraser Bruce Group as a specialist installation contractor to deliver the refurbishment of several Scottish Water tanks as part of a five-year framework involving civil engineering works. The Fraser Bruce Group have had an excellent working relationship with Fosroc for well over 30 years, so they approached the team at Fosroc to provide a selection of waterproofing solutions for different applications across the framework. They were looking for a robust yet flexible waterproof coating that would maintain its integrity for at least 20 years.THE SOLUTIONFosroc specified their most robust deck waterproofing system Nitodek FS System 3, with an additional topcoat for extra robustness against the effects of weathering. Nitodek FS is UV and slip resistant, and comes with the quality assurance of a 20-year warranty. It is also seamless, eliminating the risk of ingress through failed lap joints. For this application, the existing failed waterproofing system needed to be mechanically removed prior to the mechanical preparation of the concrete deck, after which the Nitodek FS system was applied. Once the existing system was removed, it was apparent that extensive concrete repairs would be required to both the perimeter upstand and the access hatch upstands. Spalling, delamination and blistering could be seen on various areas of the surface. Repairs to these areas and the 45⁰ fillets where horizontal meets vertical, were carried out using Renderoc GP. Once cured, the deck waterproofing phase using Nitodek FS was undertaken.THE BENEFITSBy using the fast setting, liquid applied Nitodek FS for the tank waterproofing system, the Fraser Bruce Group were able to take advantage of the 60-minute cure time to quickly apply the primer, fleece reinforced membrane and topcoat. This kept project costs to a minimum for the client, while the ability of Nitodek FS to bond to itself gave the additional flexibility of enabling the work to be completed in two stages, several weeks apart, with no risk of failure at the point where the two application areas met.

THE PROJECTFulwith Mill in Harrogate is located in an exclusive upmarket area – so much in fact, in 2019 Fulwith Mill Lane was named by Zoopla as the most expensive road in Yorkshire. For this new build project, Fosroc were asked to specify suitable products for the waterproofing aspect of the basement construction. The main challenges included a high water table, high clay concentration in surrounding area leading to a perched water table, and potential for hydrostatic pressure against the basement construction. Howard Civil Engineering was the main contractor for the project, with Fosroc being selected as materials supplier due to a long standing relationship between the companies, and a number of previous deployments.THE SOLUTIONFully bonded Proofex Engage membrane was used on the basement slab, combined with Supercast Watertight Concrete Powder (WCP) to provide a high level of resilience to both water ingress and potential defects. Supercast WCP is a concrete admixture that reduces porosity and permeability, increasing water and corrosion resistance. The vertical elements were cast in Supercast WCP with Proofex 3000, to provide a greater degree of flexibility to enable the contractor to install effectively in the tight spaces around the site, and around the complex shape of the structure. Proofex 3000 is a cold applied, highly flexible waterproof membrane – ideal for application of membrane around intricate building features.THE BENEFITSThe products specified for this project provided multi-layered and seamless protection to the underground element of this exclusive residence to meet stringent BS8102 Type A waterproofing standards. Proofex Engage provides water, water-vapour and gas protection to water excluding structures such as basements, and protects concrete from aggressive ground salts, chemicals and hydrocarbons. It is supplied with a self-adhesive strip on one side of the roll to provide sealed laps and comes with a range of auxillary products (for this project, Supercast SW20 Hydrophillic Waterstop) to form a complete waterproofing solution and simplify application for the contractor. Its unique mesh system bonds permanently to concrete, remaining in pace even if settlement takes place – the exceptionally high bond strength of Proofex Engage - 2.96kN, sets it apart from the competition, at 70% stronger than the leading chemically bonded membrane.

The innovative new low odour, non-taint polyaspartic based floor coating, Nitoflor PAFS, was used to rejuvenate the floor of a poultry processing area.

SAS130 was chosen for its flexibility, as it offers both TeeGrid and Mesh design options depending on aesthetic wishes. A versatile system, the architects requested a floating t-grid with mesh in different colours – a unique design choice. Pastel green (RAL 6019) and orange (RAL 2003) were juxtaposed with white (RAL 9010) to strengthen the HubSpot brand identity throughout the commercial space. Completed in August 2018, the HubSpot project has received accolades including: Fit Out Client of the Year 2018 award and Best Workplace by Great Place to Work Ireland.

The interior designer Davenport Campbell was looking for a system that was sympathetic to the base build, a monolythic asthethic and a bold perforation pattern. SAS could accomplish all of these features with our SAS150 ceiling system.

Designed by Haworth Tompkins, the Bridge Theatre is a new commercial theatre building situated by City Hall overlooking the Thames. It was of utmost importance that the doors leading into the auditorium had the highest sound attenuating qualities. Shadbolt were asked to manufacture and supply bespoke FSC® certified sound attenuating performance doors and also FD30 and FD60 fire performance doors, factory hung into corresponding doorsets.

The new Ardley EfW Plant, including a 12m basement built over an Artesian Well, presented a host of construction challenges. Due to the extreme water pressure created by the Artesian Well, as well as ammonium salts in the ground, Fosroc worked closely with Tata Projects specifying a solution using Proofex Engage to provide a watertight, chemically resistant barrier, with Supercast SW20 in the construction joints to reinforce the floor to wall joint. Fosroc provided a ‘total solution’ package to ensure Tata Projects could feel confident with the proposed specification, from basement waterproofing, to grouting crane bases, flooring and sealants.

BDP approached Furnitubes with a concept seating design for the redevelopment of Thomas More Square. The designs were characterised by a complex arrangement of intersecting angled planes to fit into dedicated alcoves in the raised planters. From this concept Furnitubes designers developed the complex geometry by 3d modelling each of the 6 unique seating structures, and a complementary large scale wall-top platform. Seating was used in mirrored pairs either side of the main walkway and included flat benches, and seats with single plane and compound angle backrests, all custom-designed and made to fit the challenging levels of the site.

Gauld Architecturehave created the perfect modern home usinginsightful architectural detail and two GlazingVision Roof Windows. The drawings called formodern architecture at every corner, from zinccladding to wooden interiors.A single storey doctor’s surgery had previouslybeen converted to a residential building, butunfortunately the home had very little floor area.The property overlooked a private garden behindand suffered from damp as well as a lack ofprivacy from passers-by, and so an upgradewas overdue. Previous planning applications toextend had been refused, and so an alternativeorganisational approach was needed to improveresidential amenity.The proposed works consisted of splitting theaccommodation over three levels, with thebedroom and bathroom a half level belowground, and the kitchen and entrance at streetlevel with the living space a half level above toenable views out over the heads of pedestrians.The split helps to reduce the massing and theasymmetric roof is shaped to minimise impacton the natural light to the neighbour’s windowsand garden behind.Construction commenced on the property, andquickly it was confirmed the boundary brick wallcould be salvaged from the previous structuregiving a familiar and robust public facing edgeand provides a desired sleek finish to the wall.The home also boasts crisp zinc roofing and wallcladding detailing, providing a smooth transitionfrom the exposed bricks to the first storey.The Pitchglaze Roof Windows allowed GauldArchitecture to achieve a seamless junction withthe folded zinc, with the glazing set on the sameplane to give the roof a pleasing continuity.Internally, the glazing is sized so the externalviews are framed only by the lined reveals,with the roof window largely hidden giving asleek finish. Muchnatural light is captured via the roof windows,positioned strategically to ensure good andeven distribution throughout, while set flushwith the zinc to achieve a surface tension andpleasing solidity to the roof planes. A stunning project, the Gothia Towers Exhibition Centre in Sweden benefits from the installation of five, state-of-the-art, fully automatic, Skyfold vertical-rising partitioning walls. As part of the Lincoln High Street improvement scheme Lincolnshire County Council required seating with a significant visual presence to be used as part of traffic-calming measures as well as providing useful short term seating for shoppers. Furnitubes’ in-house designers developed a unique circular bench for the scheme. The steelwork was supplied in a hardwearing corten effect nylon coating, with the iroko hardwood slats in a finish coat to maintain good long term colouration. Overall the scheme has provided this section of Lincoln High Street with a new lease of life.

Fearnach House on The Black Isle in the Highlands of Scotland was designed by architect Iain Macbeath, and built by the firm’s sister company, Thermopassive.The house is a 190m² new house, built to the architect’s “Thermopassive” specification with larch timber and render walls and profiled metal roofing. It has PV solar panels with a “diverter” heating up water and charging an electric car. High levels of thermal capacity storage in an insulated concrete floor slab (so it stays warm and flattens out rapid temperature fluctuations) and very good air tightness.There are no cold bridges (which is more important than you would think) and also a heat recovery ventilation system for fresh air.This project uses FAKRO top hung and pivot window preSelect MAX and L-shaped combination windows.When asked, why Fakro roof windows were specified for the project, Ian McBeath told us, “We have been specifying and buying Fakro roof lights for many years. They are well-priced compared with competitive products and of excellent quality and design.The positioning of the handles at the bottom of the window is also a major factor. It makes it much easier to operate a window with the handles at the bottom rather than the top of the window, which is often out of reach of many shorter and disabled people. The windows are also very well insulated and airtight.”The windows have helped achieve an extremely energy-efficient home as well as flooding the upper floor rooms with an abundance of natural light. And the client loves the internal and external finishes.Based in the North of Scotland, Thermopassive Ltd is an architect-owned company which specialises in highly insulated buildings (better than passive house standard) constructed in Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS).

Cantonian High School in Fairwater, Cardiff were in the process of having some Portakabin buildings installed and required a large canopy that would provide a covered walkway along the length of their Textiles, Food Tech, Drama and Learning Centre classrooms.Portakabin requested a price from us as we work closely with them, offering their clients shade and shelter solutions that fit perfectly with their temporary buildings.The school required the canopy to be 68.58m long with a projection of 6m, as mentioned above to cover a number of classrooms.The SolutionThe Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy was proposed as the ideal solution as it covered the customer’s needs. It has a maximum projection of up to 6m, can be any length and offers high UV protection to those underneath including shelter from the rain.The school was happy with the design put forward by Able Canopies and Portakabin and placed an order for a 68.58m x 6m Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy.

It became clear that for Holy Name Medical Centre to continue providing its patients with crucial life-saving care, their existing Intensive Care Unit (ICU) space would need to undergo an essential update.Approach“Our ICU was built in the 1960s and was in need of an upgrade,” stated Melissa Candela, Holy Name Medical Centre’s Manager of Design and Construction. “Our experience at the epicentre of New Jersey’s outbreak triggered an action plan to transition the outdated space to a unit with the highest technology, safety, and design standards, in addition to strong functionality.” The design of the unit needed to prioritise interiors that could endure frequent cleaning and disinfecting routines while helping to create a design-oriented space with a patient focus.SolutionHoly Name Medical Centre selected Altro Whiterock White and the decorative Altro Whiterock wall designs throughout the ICU to create a high design, hygienic space for patient treatment. Altro Whiterock is a hygienic walls system, providing smooth impact-resistant surfaces and leaving dirt and bacteria nowhere to hide. This is especially practical in the case of Holy Name Medical Centre’s ICU, where thorough cleaning is vital in promoting the safety of patients and staff alike. Altro Whiterock wall designs can be used alongside Altro Whiterock White to create a less clinical feel in patient areas.

The Christie was seeking a solution that would provide it with all the benefits of wall protection in terms of reducing lifecycle costs, while being as invisible as possible, creating a less institutional and more relaxing environment for its patients. To make this vision a reality, Gradus worked closely with the hospital throughout the process. The £41m Health Innovation Campus will act as a focal point, allowing researchers, healthcare professionals, businesses, local authorities and policy-makers, to focus on a systems approach to improving health, in line with the aims of the UK’s Industrial Strategy and the NHS long-term plan. Soundis was approached by BAM Construction to supply the Absorb-R WoodTec Walls Slats. These where installed by our installation partner UK Acoustic Systems The WoodTec Wall Slats are based on a fibre gypsum board which has excellent properties regarding both fire safety and acoustics. The slats are less sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity which results in 100% straight aligned slats over their full lifetime.

The school has 69 pupils who have special educational needs, of which around 28 would board on the first floor of the new school.Soundis were contracted to supply an acoustic fabric wall mounted panelling system to the newly constructed teaching areas within the school. The requirement for sound absorption on this project was elevated due to the sensitivity of sensory processing within the children. The panels help to control & reduce reverberation times (echos) providing a calmer environment for the children to work in.The system chosen on this project were the Soundis 40mm Absorb-R SofTone Panels, due to the panels being 40mm thick, they provide Class A acoustic performance.

800 square meters of Black Webnet creating an innovative Webnet Green Wall ,providing shade and year-round temperature control for this contemporary office building.The innovative design features our Webnet stainless steel mesh system suspended from roof supports to create a strong, secure and long-life structure for plants to climb up. Planters at first floor level encircle the building to provide low level greening, as well as a base for the climbers.Bringing nature to this urban landscape, the green wall not only makes the office look spectacular, but also provides a habitat for wildlife and significantly improves the building’s carbon footprint. The shade and evaporative cooling of the plants also help to cool the building in summer and insulate it in winter, helping to improve thermal efficiency and save energy costs.
