Stonehenge New Visitor Centre Air-Dried British Sweet Chestnut The requirement was to meet the specification of BS1186-3 Class 2 and better. Due to the nature or Sweet Chestnut having large knots, it was opted to supply the product Finger Jointed, in turn created an almost entirely clear product as can be seen in the images below. Over time the tannins will begin to exude from the Sweet Chestnut, allowing the timber to weather down to a silver / grey and allowing the building to be more visually in keeping with English Heritage’s other buildings on-site.

Knotwood aluminium cladding installed on this modular constrction project for Cambridge NHS trust. 700m2 of mixed width cladding and solar shading solution for the windows. This project was originally specified in timber but changed to Knotwood's aluminium profiles due to the need for an A2-s1-d0 fire rating and structural compliance of CWCT testing. Grey Ash was chosen as the wood effect which is part of Knotwood's weathered finishes range. RAL 2000 Yellow Orange was chosen for the east elevation entrance which really makes it stand out.

Tasked with specifying a signature element for Nudo Sushi Box, leading fit-out manufacturer Swandene Specialist Contract Interiors looked to Karndean Designflooring for its inspiration. Looking to achieve an eye-catching design to take forward as part of the roll out to other locations, Swandene opted for a striking chevron design using two contrasting wood designs from Karndean’s Opus collection. The statement design showcases the cool, grey wash hues of Grano (WP311) against the rustic timber effect of Ignea (WP313).

Longwater Reach is a collection of 74 two, three and four bedroom houses at Green Park Village being created by St Edward, part of the Berkeley Group. Exterior design traits include classic HardiePlank® weatherboarding in colours including Arctic White and Midnight Black, providing a natural timber effect, long-lasting durability and a stunning finish. Coloured matched finely-finished balconies and window frames complete the look, with natural landscaping and pathways, all designed to blend in to the development’s calming waterside backdrop.

A stunning and substantial award-winning house on the North Norfolk coast. The house sits on a large wooded site in the centre of a Norfolk seaside village facing the sea. The linear design of the main part of the house is set into the rising ground, with an undercroft forming the main entrance and boat storage. Cowper Griffith Architects specified the Outdoor Deck Company to supply and install FSC Ipe timber to complete the expansive deck area and garden pathway feature. Aboretum House was awarded RIBA East Building of the Year 2014.

Damage from the build up of moisture results in mould, mildew and condensation on windows and in the loft space. Style’s UK-wide aftercare and service team has come to the rescue of a Midlands school whose moveable wall hadn’t been working for a number of years. At 50 years old, and made from timber, the school’s concern was that it would have to be replaced. But Style’s technicians diagnosed that the problem was with the rollers along the bottom – many of which had seized due to old age and a lack of regular servicing. After making 8 bespoke new rollers the Style team returned to the school to fit them,saving the school considerable expenditure.

The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) in Staffordshire is winner of the Large Visitor Attraction category in the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2018. Designed by Glenn Howells Architects (GHA), this stunning building is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance - a spiritually uplifting place which honours the fallen, recognises service and sacrifice and fosters pride in the UK. The building engages materially with its environment and harnesses a soft material concept of larch timber and natural stone. Internally this is complemented by the installation of 1000sqm of Troldtekt wood wool acoustic ceiling panels.

A good example of the before and after effects of laying a sedum roof garden and accompanying deck and paved area onto a small domestic roof terrace. All these products are designed to sit on top of the waterproof membrane (in this case single ply) there was no issue of damage to the roof. The support pads lifted the decking off the roof, eliminating the risk of the timber piercing the membrane, and drainage was maintained through the roof surface since the green roof system has a cavity beneath its own reservoir and drainage layer to allow water run-off.

The second phase with sustainable timberPlease Be Seated is a uniquely designed public artwork by London based designers, Paul Cocksedge Studio. The design allows locals and passers-by to stop and watch the world go by whether sat or even lying down. The structure was designed with locations in mind, not wanting to obstruct the busy shopping centres or detract from the surrounding architecture.The artwork was first designed and placed in London using reclaimed scaffolding boards. The second Chinese version of the artwork, however, used Accoya Wood. The structure was fabricated in partnership with UAP and the Accoya was sourced and supplied by local Accoya approved distributor, Jiangsu Dragon Wood (JDW). Paul Cocksedge Studio worked with JDW to complete and install, managing the entire process remotely as a result of Covid restrictions.The artwork is made from 1,440 planks of sustainably sourced, high-performance Accoya timber. A key benefit of Accoya that made it the material of choice is the Cradle to Cradle Gold Certification. This recognises that Accoya is fully circular, with no added synthetic materials, fully recyclable and non-toxic. The Accoya planks are supported by a framework of bent steel designed to be easily assembled and disassembled for travelling.Please Be Seated made its debut in China in 2020, in partnership with Swire Properties. The installation was relocated across numerous locations in China, starting at the Temple Plaza of Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li in Chengdu, before travelling to Guangzhou, Shanghai, and finally Beijing in 2021 where the public artwork is permanently residing.

Our client wanted a low maintenance but high quality finish for the balconies on a build of high end flats and penthouses.Castlewood composite decking was chosen as it provides good slip resistance and a very luxurious finish. Our composite decking is very low maintenance due to the unique polymer cap that is applied to the decking boards during production. This particular deck board is supplied with a 25 year limited warranty for domestic applications and a 10 year limited warranty for commercial applications. The balconies also had very low thresholds in some areas that could not have been overcome with traditional timber joists.The aluminium substructure was assembled in frames with joists running at 400mm apart to provide adequate support for the composite boards. Additional joists were also installed to support the ends of each decking board where two ends meet.Each aluminium frame was then laid on our DD adjustable pedestals to make them completely level. Private house, Jersey CHALLENGE Glulam beams – or glued laminated timber – are an ideal light weight alternative for steel or reinforced concrete that allow for much longer spans, heavier loads and complex shapes. Over the years timber rot may occur to such a degree that renovation becomes imminent and irreversible. That’s exactly what has happened to the property of a Jersey customer of RENOLIT’s approved contractor Advanced Roofing. A solution was sought to “save” the existing Glulam beam structure without too many structural changes. SOLUTION The RENOLIT ALKORPLAN roofing contractor solved the problem as follows: For the first stage they removed the failed, rotten areas and treated the remaining areas for insect infestation. Then they covered the glulam beams at each change of direction with RENOLIT ALKORPLAN metal sheet. Over the metal the beams were completely wrapped in reinforced RENOLIT ALKORPLAN membrane. Nicely packed… and completely waterproof. It worked really well and actually quite an ingenious idea! The glulam beams can start a second life resistant to all weather conditions. Once the glulam beams were encased there was still the issue of the solar shading to be re-fitted. Preferably without having to penetrate the newly applied membrane! The brilliant idea of using RENOLIT ALKORSOLAR profiles welded to the top edges of the glulam beams as a safe and solid support for the solar shading evolved. This project is again an excellent proof of the versatility of our RENOLIT ALKORSOLAR mounting system.

The developer of an apartment conversion scheme in the Pennine hills village of Diggle near Oldham wanted to achieve superior sound reduction standards in the walls and floors and go beyond the minimum requirements set out by the Building Regulations.The Old Mill House project involved transforming a Victorian industrial building into several residential dwellings. The project’s design needed to comply with the requirements of Approved Document E, which sets out minimum standards in England and Wales for airborne and impact sound transmission between dwellings where there is a Material Change of Use.However, to deliver the highest quality living accommodation to potential buyers, the developer insisted that the acoustic specification not only met the minimum standards but went beyond them.To achieve their goals for the floors and walls, they approached Hush Acoustics for assistance in developing the specifications and providing the required products.Given the unique nature of the properties being created, the acoustic design for the flooring had to be compatible with underfloor heating and more unusual floor finishes such as stone tiling.The specification developed by Hush Acoustics for the separating floors beneath the floorcoverings featured a plywood timber deck, below which was the underfloor heating system and 8mm Hush FFR resilient underlay.For the ceiling side, Hush recommended standard acoustic insulation for use within the timber joists, two layers of 15mm Fireline plasterboard attached to the underside of the joists, the Hush MF Ceiling System to allow Hush Slab 100 to be fitted in the void created, finished with a layer of 15mm Soundbloc plasterboard.For the separating walls, two specifications were developed according to the types of walls. In areas where there was an existing masonry wall, a wall lining consisting of independent stud work, Hush Slab insulation and Soundbloc plasterboard was developed. In other areas of the scheme, a twin timber stud wall is recommended, again featuring Hush Slab insulation and Soundbloc plasterboard.As part of the process, the Hush Acoustics team undertook many site visits and guided the design and build process to ensure the correct installation was followed, and pre-completion testing was also arranged.The solutions developed and provided by Hush Acoustics fully met the developer’s goals to go beyond Approved Document E’s compliance standards according to the pre-completion tests.

he University of South Wales (USW) has recently installed 900 m2 of Taraflex® Area Elastic (AE) System vinyl sports flooring in ‘Maple’ from international flooring specialist Gerflor. This high-quality installation was for a replacement floor in the USW Fitzone at their Treforest campus.“USW were looking to replace their existing timber sports floor due to damages caused by flooding. As they had an installation at USW Nantgarw Sport Park One of our Taraflex Combisport system they wanted costings to install a similar system at the Treforest site.” Tony Thorne added, “We specified 900m2 of our world class Taraflex AE System, as there was existing equipment which included bleachers and doors. As part of the rigorous specification process, we had to meet the same height as the existing flooring. At Gerflor we have timber sports floors within our portfolio, however following conversations with various stakeholders on the project and due to factors, such as non-sport use and high life cycle costs due to the repeated maintenance needed for timber, we specified Taraflex as the floor finish.”Richard Lewis, Capital Projects Manager at USW said,” We decided to replace the existing sports surface due to a previous roof leak that damaged the floor. T & B Contractors Ltd. had been contracted to build a state of the art extension and refurbish a number of existing areas at Capel Manor Primary School in Enfield, Middlesex. Part of the extension included a free standing canopy that would create solar energy for the school and protect the children playing underneath. Colm O’Boyle at T & B Contractors invited us to quote for a timber solar canopy that would sit adjacent to the year 2 classroom that was being revamped. They wanted a system that would let the light through as well as providing solar energy.

Accoya was selected as the ideal material to clad this Burleigh Brewery project in Australia. Burleigh Brewing began on 1 July 2006 and immediately set about pioneering the craft beer movement on the Gold Coast. Distributed by Britton Timbers, Accoya was chosen because the project called for a low maintenance, sustainable external cladding with a high-end appearance. Accoya was also ideal due to its natural blonde aesthetic, which was carefully selected to ensure the Brewery logo was as prominent and distinctive as possible. Roughly 4 m3 of Accoya was used with an Integrain coating.

Canal Architectural worked closely with James Darwent Architecture to design and manufacture a bespoke curved cantilevered staircase for a property in the Peak District The mild steel staircase structure incorporated 16 timber treads with 20mm spindles and handrail, incorporating an all wax finish. A handrail was added to the staircase in American White Oak as part of a safety and architectural feature. The result was a minimalist structure that blended perfectly with the contemporary and rustic elements of the property. The talented project team worked closely with NAW Reynolds Building Limited to install the staircase in line with current regulations.

Middlewood locks is located in the city of Salford and at the gateway to Manchester City Centre. Artform Urban supplied a range of street furniture to a new £1bn waterside mixed-use development project. Box litter bins featuring unique laser cut patterns are distributed across the Canalside landscape. Giada, a robust and hard wearing granite and timber bench was selected to line the edges of the canalise path. Two versions of the stylish Inside cycle stand were also supplied. Middlewood locks received an award in 2019 for Insider North West's Large Apartment Development of the Year.

Brunswick Park is the largest green space on the University of Manchester campus. It includes seating areas, trees, wildflowers and walkways. The parkland was created to benefit staff, students, visitors and the local community. Artform were asked to supply and install a large number of benches and seats, forming the key seating element at the heart campus. The Cobra Bench was chosen due to its modular form and contemporary take on the traditional timber bench design. In addition to providing space for meeting, relaxation and social gathering, the scheme created a central space for large-scale campus events, including graduation.

Gaming giants Tombola recently completed the construction of their flagship £7m headquarters at Wylam Wharf in Sunderland. It is situated within a conservation area on the banks of the River Wear. In line with the overall design brief, the high-quality natural materials used were to reflect the location of the site within the conservation area. Artform were specified to supply extremely durable tropical hardwood timbers, given the coastal location for the benches and picnic sets provided. The scheme has created an improved environment for staff whilst establishing a network of paths linking to the wider area.

Before the installation of the Liberty Switch system could begin, a sub-floor was constructed using timber battens to provide a completely level surface onto which the pre-manufactured Liberty Switch base panels, complete with the drives and control mechanism were installed. The Harlequin Liberty top panels were then laid and locked into place, finally being topped with a Harlequin Studio vinyl floor. The whole system is operated via a master control unit using a simple touch screen placed on the wall of the room which enables rapid transformation.  

We built the world first Passivhaus CPD training facility / pub, this is the worlds most airtight pub at 0.07ach at 50 pa. This is a twin wall timber frame, it’s 450mm wide insulation Huntsman which is made of thousands of recycled plastic bottles. Huntsman also recycled 1 billion plastic bottles from the sea last year. We have a 7.2 KW system solar panels system that powers the building, it’s got MVHR Nilan. On the external façade we applied Passive Purple External which is airtight up to 0.03ach.

Taking 10 years to build, and costing £23 million, Cambridge Central Mosque is the first purpose-built mosque in the city, being described as ‘the greenest mosque in Europe’. To reduce the noise impact for both local residents and worshippers, our Jakoustic® Reflective acoustic fencing was installed, resulting in a safe, secure, anti-climb perimeter with an aesthetically pleasing noise barrier that blends in with the surrounding area. This is achieved using a flat timber profile along with interlocking ‘V’ boards which reduces the rate at which sound waves can pass through the barrier.

EB24 cottage pane style steel windows featuring the G+ system with a Fenestra joint were chosen by the client to replicate and replace the original windows in this beautiful 1930s private residence. The open-sided loggia leads out to the garden - Clement were able to manufacture this screen in the EB24 window system to match all other fenestration. The new EB24 windows to the feature stairwell window allow lots of light into the centre of the house. The original timber surrounds were in good condition throughout the property and so were retained by Clement to house the new steel windows.

Fulneck School were seeking a new and improved sports surface to freshen up the hall and transform their indoor space. For this reason, DYNAMIK overlaid the old timber school sports floor with a DYNAMIK seamless Polyethylene (PU). We advocate the benefits of solid synthetic surfaces for exceptional durability and seamless installation. Ryan Walker, Director of Sport at Fulneck School, had this to say: "The new flooring has really transformed our indoor space. It is now a first-class facility and all students at Fulneck School will really benefit from using it when we return".

When Barry Daly, company director of BUDA Building and Development, went to visit an old reclaim yard in Rawreth to purchase some oak for a development he was working on, all he found was a barren site. The development, Trenders Barn, consists of four timber frame luxury detached properties, each with a unique design. Along with the need for a high quality finish for such a premium build, environmental performance was also a key deciding factor for the choice of all materials. Hardie® Plank, in midnight black was specified for the facades to stay in-keeping with local Essex design styles.

Havas Media Group is a global network of entertainment, media and communications agencies, that has recently opened its new ‘HKX’ village in Pancras Square, London to unite twenty-four of its UK operations in a stunning new European headquarters. Given the nature of the fast-moving office environment at Havas, the combination of 14,000m2 raised access floors and 3,000m2 of Attiro magnetic engineered timber (supplied by Fieldmans, one of Kingspan’s supply and install partners) allows for the easy reconfiguration of office layouts and furniture, as well as providing instant access to the underfloor void.
