Culham

Culham

MMCITE UK Ltd

ASA Landscape Architects were appointed by the UKAEA to design a new vibrant landscape to replace the tired patch of grass in a quadrangle within the Culham Science Centre. The brief was to design a place that would be used as a meeting area for lunch and other social events, supporting the restaurant situated within the building. The focus is on the tenant’s mental well-being by encouraging rich social experiences.Katie Dixon from ASA Landscape Architects explains: “We wanted to create an exciting landscape and have based our concept on the idea of the atom and its energy and motion. By dividing the landscape into smaller areas with the use of paths, avenues of trees, linear planting beds with grasses and Corten steel screens, we wanted to encourage more intimate spaces for smaller group gatherings and meetings. This was further enhanced by including a range of outdoor furniture by mmcité throughout the site to facilitate meeting areas,” she ends.“It was an inspiring project,” Jana Tyrer from mmcité comments on the cooperation, “the architects together with the client have decided to use grey HPL and bicolour orange and grey powder coating of steel construction to match the company colours of UKAEA.”Playful yet very comfortable and calming environment, Culham’s quadrangle makes a perfect example of the new approach to public space, and its set up.

Roché Systems Ltd

Selfridges & Co’s iconic store at 400 Oxford Street first opened its doors in 1909 and now includes a range of experiences including a creative playground, late-night dining restaurants, a cinema, and even wedding services. It’s also one of the only stores on Oxford Street not to have its windows smashed by the Suffragettes back in the day.In partnership with Souvenir Scenic Studios we were tasked with manufacturing security shutters to cover 2 voids, one facing the Edward Mews road and the other for a temporary space on Orchard Street. The client was keen to maintain vision once the shutters were installed in preparation for a new exhibition area and therefore decided to proceed with our Tube & Link steel security shutter. Both security shutters were over 4m in width and can be operated electrically via an external key switch. Manual overrides were provided so that each shutter could be used in the rare event of a power cut. Our Tube & Link security shutter was the perfect solution with the ability to maintain 75% visibility while making sure both areas remained secure. Due to the size of both openings, a three-phase motor was provided.  The steel tubes, guides, and housing were all powder coated grey to meet the client’s requirements.

Belle Vue

Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC

Belle Vue is a 5,700 square metre retirement community of 60 one and two-bedroom apartments in Hampstead, designed by Morris+Company. It’s surrounded by carefully landscaped gardens and manicured courts, with which it offers a communal environment for its residents.Inside the feeling of community is continued with a restaurant, cafe, library, spa, gym, lounges and activity rooms. All are thoughtfully considered to ensure the residents are catered for in all ways. Journeys throughout the project are open to communal areas as well for further social considerations.Due to Belle Vue’s surroundings, Floren.be’s Avorio brick was used to retain a similar, but a visually distinct homage to the brick structures in the multiple local conservation areas. The lightness and fluctuating tonality of the red Avorio allows the building to appear as light and airy externally as it is inside, due to its large windows, open plan layouts and community spaces. With a clientele whose average age is around 77, it’s insightful that Pegasus Life Pegasus Lifestory chose to hire from architectural practices who had no previous experience in the retirement sector. Modern sentiments are clearly visible throughout, but care and consideration are shown to its inhabitants where a calm environment is melded with the benefits of inner-city living.Belle Vue was recently shortlisted for the 2022 RIBA London awards.

Quiet Mark certification for Rockfon’s acoustic ceilings

Rockfon

Being in an overtly-loud space – whether it’s in a restaurant, an office, a gym or anywhere else – is really irritating, right? You’d be reluctant to go back or never return again. Maybe at home, the marble top counter in the kitchen wasn’t the best idea for open plan living, but you’re stuck with it. Or are you?  Rockfon is proud to announce it has been awarded the industry-leading Quiet Mark certification for its Mono Acoustic, Blanka and Color-all acoustic ceiling tile ranges which will help solve these excessive noise issues, and they will look amazing. https://www.quietmark.com/brands/rockfon Here we have a beautiful range of colours and styles that allow you to get as creative - or discreet - as you like with your acoustic ceiling and they all have built-in Class A sound absorption from the stone wool core.   Rockfon is one of a growing number of building material manufacturers to have its products assessed by Quiet Mark. Nigel Watkins, Country Director at Rockfon UK & Ireland, explains why: “Rockfon has been an expert in acoustics for over 60 years, but we understand very well that acoustics can be complex. Quiet Mark certification is a short cut for saying “this product is going to help make your space quieter.” Rockfon Mono Acoustic is a seamless acoustic ceiling. It is often used discreetly in residential properties, heritage projects or offices where it looks like a smooth plasterboard finish, but it has Class A sound absorption. But Mono Acoustic has allowed the imaginations of some architects to run riot, creating big geometric shapes or curves on walls and ceilings, to create Instagrammable moments for their clients in restaurants, shops and public spaces. Not all acoustic suspended ceilings are white. There are 34 contemporary colours in the Rockfon Color-all range which has been curated by Interior Designer, Sara Garanty, chosen to reflect nature’s colours.  The tiles – which come with a matching grid – provide great opportunities for zoning different areas, depending on how you want to make people feel. Greens are relaxing, blues encourage us to think outside the box and be creative, yellows are uplifting, creams and browns feel cosy, and so on. These tones are designed to bring acoustic and visual comfort to interiors, to enhance well-being Quiet Mark is an independent global certification programme associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation. Its international award programme recognises excellence in low-noise products, technology and solutions to unwanted noise. Poppy Szkiler, chief executive and co-founder of Quiet Mark, said: “Because sound is invisible, it is often overlooked. Yet the fundamental impact it has on all the physical rhythms of our bodies, our hormones, heart rate and brain waves, is so profound and inherent to our wellbeing, and therefore also to the design process of the buildings we live in.” “Quiet Mark and our expert team of acousticians are delighted to approve and certify three beautiful acoustic ceiling products by industry leaders, Rockfon, whose vast selection of edge designs, dimensions, colours and shapes help architects create spaces that people can enjoy with their eyes and their ears”.

Gaggenau: The perfect appliance partner for the major re-development of The Old War Office building

Gaggenau

Gaggenau, the luxury brand for professional-grade home appliances, was the perfect appliance partner for the major re-development of The Old War Office (The OWO) building. Located in London’s Whitehall, directly opposite Horse Guards, this 760,000 sq ft Grade II listed masterpiece has been transformed into a Raffles hotel, private residences, destination restaurants, a spa and boutique shops. Gaggenau is renowned for its considered approach to kitchen design and nowhere is this more important than in a historic listed building, where custom-fit solutions are a must. Indeed, each of the 85 apartments – which range from studios to five bedroom – had a unique size, shape or aspect, so had to be individually designed. As such, the interior designers 1508 London engaged bespoke kitchen company Smallbone, which – in turn – specified long-term partner Gaggenau.  The kitchens are beautifully understated with doors in a grey-stained timber with delicate brass framing and accents, plus creamy Taj Mahal quartzite worktops. As such, the suite of Gaggenau appliances were the ideal choice, as they work in harmony with the luxurious colour schemes. Built in 1906, the Old War Office is a building that has witnessed world-changing events. Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and Lord Kitchener all worked here, not to mention T E Lawrence and Ian Fleming. Now, a new chapter is being written as the 125-room Raffles hotel and 85 fully-serviced Raffles branded residences combine old-world grandeur with modern luxury.

Manchester Victoria - Residential Balconies

Manchester Victoria - Residential Balconies

RYNO

Developed as a great space to live in one of Manchester's best-connected locations, close to the city's shops, restaurants & bars, and next to Manchester Victoria train station, the project comprised two 20 and 25-storey residential towers, which delivered 520 new homes. The architect Sheppard Robson, main contractor VINCI Construction, and installer Deckbuilders, all came together to deliver a great project, that is part of a gateway into the city, featuring fantastic-looking balconies, which we were very happy to secure against the forces of nature: namely wind-uplift.There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to mitigating the effects of negative pressure on balconies and terraces in high-rise buildings, and in this particular case, we had to fix the paving down to the main structure of the building mechanically, to de-risk against the impact of up to -2.68kPa of suction on the roof.To account for cost and time constraints, the system we used to secure the balconies against wind-uplift was the TerraSmart™ Pedestal system with the addition of a visual wind-uplift mechanical fixing. The tiles were mechanically restrained to the pedestals which, in turn, were mechanically fixed to the concrete deck of the balconies. And the outcome? Balconies secured, the project de-risked against wind-uplift, and the beautiful Quadro Argento Tiles (600x1200x20mm) safely in place for all residents to experience and enjoy. Listen to what our specification manager had to say.If you are specifying a project and want to know how you can mitigate the effects wind-uplift or the impact that occurs as a result of urban canyons, we can help.

ASHFORD GOES TO INFINITY AND BEYOND

Zaun Limited

Kent County Council wanted one-off architectural fencing for its keynote public square, the focal point of a new £16.5m town centre, to celebrate famous Ashford-born mathematician John Wallis. The scheme next to Victoria Road School in Ashford was designed by an artist to commemorate the work of Wallis, a pioneer who developed various mathematical theories and introduced the symbol for infinity. Unfortunately, it required a natural edge to the square that reduced visibility through to the school beyond. The SolutionZaun drew on its specialist bespoke construction skills to produce a complex fencing solution with parallel perforated panels of different-sized holes, creating a zany fence line up to a height of 4m.Different materials and finishes have been used to create an art trail with etched text and symbols relating to his work.Zaun and the main contractor, Volker Fitzpatrick, accommodated several changes from the original designs to reduce overall scheme costs. A pavilion was replaced with an additional planting area, and the architectural fencing was adapted. The £16.5m project secured funding from the Departments for Communities and Local Government and Transport.Victoria Way is a new route to the south of the town centre to link the International Station at Beaver Road and the A28 Chart Road providing better access to the heart of the town. The new road opened in late 2011, providing an attractive, tree-lined avenue from Victoria Road through brownfield industrial land to join with the A28 near Matalan, and includes John Wallis Square, public art displays and new shops restaurants, cafes and homes.

RENOLIT UK Ltd

Ghelamco Arena CHALLENGE Ghent’s football club, KAA Gent, had big ambitions – having a big stadium was one of them. Its brand new home was built in order to seat more spectators and take the club to the top of the Belgian league. As the first newly-built stadium in Belgium since 1974, the multi-use Ghelamco Arena opened its doors in 2013. The stadium hosts - besides KAA Gent matches - a multitude of events throughout the year, as well a gym, supermarket, office facilities and a Guide Michelin restaurant. It’s located near the historical centre of Ghent, just outside the city. The arena, which seats 20,000 supporters, is one of Europe’s most modern stadiums. A stadium specifically designed for the ultimate football experience! How could RENOLIT help make the new stadium a success?SOLUTION The Ghelamco Arena is a real eye-catcher: impressive, fashionable in design and an architectural beauty. The stadium, however, is more than just design, it is above all environmentally friendly. The stadium was constructed with considerations towards its ecological footprint and as a result, the roof was made waterproof by means of the ecological, reflective RENOLIT ALKORBRIGHT waterproofing membrane. This completely white roofing membrane, together with the special protective coating on top of the membrane ensures a high reflection of the sunlight, which in summertime has a positive impact on the climate inside the building. With an initial reflection of 90%, the RENOLIT ALKORBRIGHT concept can consider itself to be at the absolute top of the “cool roof” roofing membranes.

Hafele UK Ltd

The scope and challenge:Millions of people visit Edinburgh each year for its renowned history, iconic buildings and vibrant social scene. With year-round visitors from the rest of the UK and overseas, there is a growing need for accommodation that combines the heritage of the city with high-quality, comfortable stays.Old Town Chambers offers exactly that, as a collection of luxury serviced apartments located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Each room showcases the building’s fascinating history in a globally-renowned part of the city, teamed with contemporary furnishings and distinctive architecture. The original Old Town Chambers, a listed building from the mid-18th Century, is home to 50 high-quality apartments, accessed via Roxburgh Court, which sits just behind the Royal Mile. In 2021, the owners of the hotel had the opportunity to refurbish the existing building and expand their footprint by taking over an adjoining address – 329 High Street – which would add 24 new high-end apartments to the property across three floors and a mezzanine level, as well as a street-level reception area, bar and restaurant.Häfele was called upon by Chris Stewart Group, who were overseeing the refurbishment, to provide a suite of suitable door ironmongery for the apartments at 329 High Street. The schedule would need to complement both the new, modern apartments added to the hotel and the more traditional reception, bar and restaurant areas. The solution:Working closely with Chris Stewart Group and architects ISA, Häfele developed a tailored hardware schedule and specification. For the communal areas of the hotel, specialist Frank Allart handles were selected in a satin nickel finish to complement the traditional style of the space. For the apartments, Häfele’s stainless steel mitred lever handle provided the perfect solution. Furthermore, given the complexity of the requirements, it made sense to utilise the Häfele to Order service – which allows customers to order their products cut, labelled and delivered to their exact requirements. This included both phased floor-by-floor and door-by-door packaging to make the installation process as efficient as possible for contractors Thomas Johnstone Ltd.The outcome:Karen Brown, head of interiors for Chris Stewart Group, worked closely with Ken on the 329 High Street project. She said: “The attention to detail offered by Häfele Projects was excellent; ironmongery can be a minefield but Ken and the team listened to what we wanted and knew exactly what to apply to the project.“There were some intricacies to consider, which were met with experience and a knowledgeable approach. For example, some doors required a lever handle on one side but we were retaining the existing door knob on the other. Getting the two to marry was looking difficult and would’ve been an ongoing maintenance issue for the hotel if not resolved, but Ken suggested connecting them via a spindle which instantly resolved the matter.“We were able to meet and discuss our requirements in-depth, explore a huge range of samples and Häfele Projects were more than happy to liaise with the contractor direct to enable us to focus elsewhere. This project has really opened our eyes to what Häfele is capable of, and we’ve been able to consider other project ranges too which we intend to utilise on future developments, like lighting and small appliances.“We’re already working together with Häfele on another hotel project in Glasgow, and there is huge scope for where our partnership can go in the future.”

Matfen Hall Hotel

Matfen Hall Hotel

Saint-Gobain Weber

Nestled in the Northumberland countryside is Matfen Hall – a mansion built in the early 1800s. To ensure the Grade-II listed property retained its Gothic architecture, a "thoughtful and stylish" transformation was required. Since 1999, it has been used as a high-end hotel and was expanded in 2004 to add a spa and increase to 53 bedrooms. Guests are promised “ultimate opulence” during their stay, and the venue has won multiple awards over the years – including the ‘favourite stately home wedding venue’ accolade at the 2020 UK Wedding Awards. Since being bought by the Walwick Estate Group in 2020, Matfen Hall has been undergoing a multi-million-pound refurbishment.Carefully considered designThe new owners have had to ensure the Grade-II listed property retains its Gothic architecture alongside modern elements, forward-thinking innovations and the optimum comfort that comes with a five-star establishment.Working with Doonan Architects and design agency Incognito, they aimed for a “thoughtful and stylish” transformation and makeover, which has resulted in a blend of history, luxury and modernity. The heart of the building – the historic Great Hall – has been meticulously restored to its former glory, while a new bar with a mezzanine has also been created, along with upgrades to The Cloisters Bar and Restaurant and a state-of-the-art kitchen.A phased approachWork began on transforming the bedrooms towards the end of 2020, during a period of enforced closure owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, and phase two began in September 2022. The hotel, excluding the golf facilities, was then closed for a further six months to ensure that guests’ safety and experience were not diminished during the period of disruption. Phase two was completed in summer 2023, and the third and final phase of the works – which involves the renovation of the remaining bedrooms as well as the golf club – is being carried out into 2024.Five-star finishRenovating Matfen Hall to a five-star standard involved the careful selection of contractors and suppliers. The main contractor, DP Builders Ltd, appointed tiling specialist W Rodgerson & Sons (WRS) – with whom they have worked for over 20 years – to provide new tiling in all ensuite bathrooms, as well as the flooring in the upper and lower courtyards, to help create the stunning Cloisters Bar and Restaurant, and two public bathrooms. Both companies worked in collaboration with the architects, designers, and owners of the hotel to select the right tiles to reflect their vision and match the building’s heritage. For the ensuite bathrooms, they chose porcelain marble effect tiles, which were fixed to the floor and walls.Meanwhile, 900 x 900 x 14mm octagon and dot Italian porcelain tiles were selected for the bar, restaurant and Upper Courtyard to match the existing tiles in the Great Hall. This included the stunning newly formed spiral staircase, complete with solid brass step nosings.Trusted productsWhen it came to applying the tiles, WRS specified products manufactured by Saint-Gobain Weber. Having worked with Weber products for more than 10 years, the team knew they would be ideal for meeting the high-quality and performance standards suited to this hotel. “We have a fantastic working relationship with Weber and are so confident in its products that it was a no-brainer to use them for this project,” said Neil Rodgerson, partner at WRS.As it’s such an old building, a lot of preparation was needed to guarantee a smooth finish. The team began by priming the walls and floors using weber PR360, which reduces bubbling, aids the flow of levelling compounds, and offers good alkali resistance and adhesion properties in both wet and dry environments. They then applied weberfloor flex – a fibre-modified, self-smoothing floor levelling compound to the floors – to varying depths of 5mm-40mm. It is quick drying and can be tiled on after just one to two hours.Tiling could then begin on the walls using weberset rapid SPF – a rapid-setting, extra flexible tile adhesive for walls and floors. Before applying the tiles to the floors, the WRS team installed an uncoupling membrane using weberset rapid SPF, to help prolong the life of the floor and prevent any lateral movement from the old concrete slab penetrating through to the tiles. During the final stage, weberset rapid SPF was used again to fix the tiles to the floors. In total, around 2500m2 of adhesive was required to achieve a quality finish throughout.Overcoming complexities“The tiling in the courtyard included some complex and time-consuming details, not least because the design was an octagon tile with an inset,” said Kate Wilson, the architect on the project. “The WRS team were required to cut around the hexagonal stone columns, chamfered steps, work with handrail base plates, and add nosing details in the courtyard extension and the spiral staircase.”Despite this, by using Weber products – which are quick to set – WRS delivered an immaculate job ahead of schedule.“As always, we received a fantastic level of support from Weber throughout this project,” added Neil. “The Weber team always provides accurate and reliable technical advice in a timely manner; their response times are particularly impressive. It was great to know that, should we have needed it, we’d have had their support to rectify any issues.”Award-winning workAs a result of the refurbishment work, in November 2023, Matfen Hall Hotel won Best Recently Renovated Hotel in the UK, Europe and the Mediterranean at the 2024 Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence.Weber’s tile fixing products are manufactured in facilities in Bedfordshire and Shropshire, ensuring product quality, conformity and availability, with reduced transportation costs and CO₂ emissions.
