Application

Suitable for masonry repair and use on painted or unpainted surfaces.

Description

Mineral-based concrete repair materials and highly developed exterior sol silicate paint systems, based on a combination of silica sol and potassium silicate binding agents.

Because of the specialist nature of these products and the highly sensitive areas of their application, advice and dedicated project specifications should be sought from Keim Mineral Paints prior to undertaking concrete repairs.

The system includes:

- Pre-treatment and preparation:

  • Keim Concretal-Cleaner: Acidic concrete cleaner for the removal of release agents and surface impurities from concrete.
  • Keim Silan-Primer: A silane-based water repellent for use as a priming coat with Keim silicate paints to provide maximum resistance to water penetration without impairing the breathability of the substrate.
  • Keim Silan 100: Solvent-free silane primer offering very high levels of water repellence.

- Concrete repair:

  • Keim Concretal MKH: Mineral cement based corrosion protector and bonding mortar.
  • Keim Concretal-MR 2.0 (Repair Mortar): Pre-bagged non shrink cementitious repair mortar for large scale concrete repairs.
  • Keim Concretal-FSP 0.2 (Fine Finishing Mortar): Pre-bagged cementitious fine finishing mortar for crack repair, filling of blow holes and surface equalisation.

- Paint (finishing coat):

  • Keim Concretal C: Formulated for protection from carbonation, water and chlorides.
  • Keim Concretal Lasur: Formulated for colour equalisation and weather proofing.
  • Keim Concretal W: Formulated for protection from water, chlorides and weather.

Surface preparation:

  • All loose and spalling concrete and material should be hacked off back to a sound base; all steel elements should be brushed with a wire brush to achieve a bright finish. The steel elements should then be treated with two coats of Keim Concretal-MKH, brush applied with a minimum period of three hours between coats.
  • Manufacturer recommends the use of Keim Spachtel, a silicate based paste filler for all mineral substrates prior to application. Any new/ repaired surfaces should be left for a minimum period of 15 days prior to any decoration taking place.

Consult manufacturer for the specific/ recommended surface preparation information required between each coat.

Primer

Keim Silan Primer.

Guidance for specification option:

All bare areas should be flood coated with Keim Silan Primer, brush or low-pressure spray applied (undiluted) and within a period of 2–6 hours, the first coat of Keim Mineral Paints must be applied.

Kiem Silan 100.

Guidance for specification option:

For use on all mineral substrates, particularly suitable for concrete, where carbonation resistance is required. Substrate should be thoroughly flood coated. Keim Silan 100 reacts with the humidity of the concrete and forms a water repellent layer under the influence of the alkalinity. Can be applied as a two coat system wet-on-wet. Can be over painted with Keim Mineral Paints after a waiting period of approximately four hours (but no more than 12 hours).

Concrete repair

Keim Concretal MKH.

Guidance for specification option:

For sprinkling into the required amount of water with constant stirring and mixed to a homogenous, lump-free mixture until a readily brushable consistency is obtained. The duration for mixing should be a minimum of five minutes using slow-running stirrers/ mixers. For 20 kg of Keim Concretal-MKH, between 3.6–3.8 L of water is required. Keim Concretal-MKH should be applied onto the prepared bright steel reinforcement, using suitable paintbrushes in two coats. Each coat must be applied all round, covering the entire surface. Care must be taken to ensure that tie wires and edges are carefully coated in order to achieve the necessary application rate

Keim Fine Finishing Mortar.

Guidance for specification option:

A final layer of Keim Fine Finishing Mortar, mixed with clean cold water to a moist earth consistency, should be applied by trowel; this will form a skim layer which will give a level surface to ensure that there is an adequate key. When all surfaces are clean, sound, wind dry, dust free and free from all surface contaminants, decoration using Keim Mineral Paints may proceed.

Keim Repair Mortar.

Guidance for specification option:

After a further minimum period of three hours, Keim Concrete Repair Mortar, mixed with clean cold water to a slurry should be thoroughly brushed around all areas that have been affected to form a good key. Should be mixed with clean cold water to a moist earth consistency and trowelled onto pre-wetted areas to a thickness of between 0.5–10 cm and allowed to dry (localised repairs).

Finishing coat

Keim Concretal C.

Guidance for specification option:

Should be thoroughly mixed beforehand using a mechanical mixer, applied undiluted, by brush or roller and worked well into all surfaces. After a minimum period of 12 hours a final coat of Keim Concretal C shall be applied. A wet edge should be maintained at all times during application and contractors should work to a natural break-line.

Keim Concretal Lasur.

Guidance for specification option:

Water repellent, low pigmentation, silicate colour wash which penetrates the surface of concrete to equalize colour variations.

Keim Concretal W.

Guidance for specification option:

For use in conjunction with Keim Fine Finishing Mortar. Keim Concretal W is a mineral matt finish silicate based paint system, the first coat to comprise Keim Concretal W in the chosen colour diluted 30% by weight with Keim Concretal Dilution, a liquid silicate binder. Apply by brush, roller or airless spray and work well into all surfaces. Two coats may be required.
