Manufacturer guidance

Concrete elements are typically manufactured in moulds that are assembled either from wood or composite materials, such as steel or plastic. The interior part of the mould provides the finished shape and surface of the unit. The mould can be smooth in texture, or have a project-specifically designed composite inlay for imprinting. Additional finishing to the surface can be provided to the de-moulded unit, either by sandblasting, acid-etching or polishing. Typically, a hydrophobic coating is applied to the visible surfaces prior to packing. An anti-graffiti layer can also be applied, should a project require additional protection against vandalism.

Manufacturer guidance

Concrete colour is dependent on the colour of the cement used. Typically, white or grey tonality is used where the designer is looking for a traditional concrete look. Modern facades call for more bespoke colour specification, which can be achieved by means of using either powdered pigments (added during production of concrete mix) or by applying a surface coating (premixed to the required colour). Concrete dyed in mass will manifest natural mottled tonality as a result of irregular cement hydroxylation in the concrete curing process. Surface-applied coatings tend to be more uniform in nature.
