Sustainability overview

Spanwall's sustainability strategy sets out clear KPI targets for the business to achieve to reduce environmental impact.

We have pledged to reduce our carbon footprint across all our operations by 50% by 2030.

We want to play our part in fighting climate change at every level of the business and supporting our customers and specifiers in the decarbonisation of the construction supply chain.

Our Commitments

We aim to comply with all relevant environmental regulations and standards relating to our business and our metal rainscreen facade products.

We are working hard to improve the energy efficiency of all our operations. This includes investing in more energy efficient equipment for cladding manufacture, adopting renewable energy sources where feasible and reducing energy consumption across all our operations.

Waste Management

We are minimising the generation of waste to landfill from our manufacturing operations by promoting recycling and reuse of materials. All our systems are also recyclable.

We have implemented waste reduction strategies, waste stream segregation for recycling and are working with our suppliers to reduce packaging waste.

Sustainable Procurement

We are giving preference to suppliers who share our sustainability commitments. This means we prioritise products and services which have lower environmental impact, use ethical sourcing and comply with current environmental standards.

Continuous Improvement

We are committed to continuous improvement in our sustainability and environmental performance. We set measurable goals, regularly review progress and adjust our business strategies to meet or exceed our sustainability objectives.

Carbon Reduction Plan

We have set specific carbon reduction targets following a detailed audit of Spanwall's carbon footprint.

We are implementing a series of initiatives to reduce carbon emissions in every part of the business and our metal cladding manufacturing.

These include:

Our latest initiatives include:

  • Monthly sustainability and factory audits carried out as part of our continual assessment process
  • Investment in new energy-efficient electric forklifts and charging stations for our materials handling at our cladding manufacturing centre in Belfast.
  • The introduction of procedures to shutdown metal fabrication plant and equipment to optimise energy usage
  • Employee training to ensure compliance with our new procedures and processes to reduce environmental impact
  • New maintenance plan for our vehicle fleet to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions
  • Establishing a Supplier Sustainability Policy. This will establish new criteria for selecting suppliers based on their sustainability commitments. We will collaborate with these suppliers to ensure adherence to stringent ethical and environmental standards
  • Submetering of electrical systems and machinery - We are installing submetering systems to monitor and analyse energy usage across different plant, equipment and processes. We will then implement real-time tracking for proactive energy management
  • Feasibility study - to integrate renewable energy into our cladding manufacturing processes. We will then identify and assess partnerships with renewable energy providers.
  • Staff training - we have developed and implemented an energy awareness programme for all employees to promote energy saving best practice.

Next Phases of our Sustainability Plan

  • Upgrading factory heating - we plan to invest in more energy efficient heating systems to further reduce energy consumption. As part of this work we will conduct an energy audit to identify any areas for improvement in the factory
  • Implementing LED lighting systems - we will explore smart lighting technology for better energy management across our operations.
