AKRI large Corten planters enhance public space

AKRI large Corten planters enhance public space

Furnitubes International Ltd

Originally built in 1986, Dukes Court has formed part of a £77 million regeneration scheme in Woking, Surrey. The redevelopment included new signage and pedestrian routes, updated office space, a new restaurant and a living ‘green’ wall - aimed to improve air quality. Outside of Dukes Court a new pedestrianised public space was designed and required the creation of large wavey planting beds all in corten to sit either side of the entrance to the building. The planter had to adapt to the stairways, slopes and columns present in the final design, adding a lot of complexity to the required planter wall geometry. Our latest solution, AKRI steel retaining planters were best suited for this as they are flexible enough to allow for varying levels and can be manufactured in the desired style of corten to harmonise with the existing building facade. The AKRI planters were then welded on top with a return, to create an attractive wave look. The finished scheme has created a pleasant, open space for tenants and members of the public to enjoy.

AKRI retaining planters drive biodiversity at Ferntower Road, London

Furnitubes International Ltd

Located in the historic district of Islington in North London, Ferntower Road is close to the popular green space, Newington Green. A dull and empty public space lies at the end of the road, nestled between local shops and cafes that passersby wander through.Islington Council wanted to improve the quality of air on streets and neighbourhoods, by introducing a green corridor which would make the space more inviting and encourage the locals to sit and relax.Working with local Landscape Architects, the plan was to help improve the public space by taking an inclusive approach. By using our AKRI 600 retaining planters, large scale planting beds were designed as part of a scheme, driving biodiversity and reducing air pollution in the area.A total of four AKRI planter shapes were crafted and manufactured in corten (a naturally corrosion resistant material). The AKRI system includes a timber seating module with cladding (which complements the AKRI unit) that was added to further bring people closer to nature. In the community, the planters and seating are well received as a new addition to the once unused public space.

BDP approached Furnitubes with a concept seating design for the redevelopment of Thomas More Square. The designs were characterised by a complex arrangement of intersecting angled planes to fit into dedicated alcoves in the raised planters. From this concept Furnitubes designers developed the complex geometry by 3d modelling each of the 6 unique seating structures, and a complementary large scale wall-top platform. Seating was used in mirrored pairs either side of the main walkway and included flat benches, and seats with single plane and compound angle backrests, all custom-designed and made to fit the challenging levels of the site.

Connaught Village Green, London

Furnitubes International Ltd

The projectOn June 4th, 2025, the Lord Mayor of Westminster unveiled Connaught Village Green — a piazza-style open space at what was once an underutilised junction in the heart of the Hyde Park Estate. The Hyde Park Estate team at the Church Commissioners began work on this scheme in 2018, commissioning public realm architects DSDHA to design a space where people could meet, rest, and recharge. The brief was clear: strengthen the village's identity, improve pedestrian safety through better road crossings, introduce planters and greenery, provide a drinking fountain, and encourage greater footfall to support local businesses. The vision was for a piazza-style space that would serve Connaught Village's distinctive character: pastel shopfronts, independent cafés, and the community that gives this corner of the West End its particular appeal. How we helpedWe supplied seating throughout the green space, positioned to encourage lingering. Our furniture sits alongside the new planters, natural stone paving, and widened footways to create a space that feels both distinctly urban and unexpectedly tranquil.Improved crossings and careful traffic management now prioritise pedestrians. Cycle parking and a public drinking fountain address practical needs whilst the planting introduces biodiversity where every square metre of green matters. The outcome: Community and identityWhere traffic once dominated, residents and visitors can now find somewhere to sit with their coffee, meet a friend, or catch their breath between errands. Charlotte Moss, Head of London at the Church Commissioners, described the collaborative effort as one designed "to deliver a lasting space that I hope will serve everyone now and into the future."Six years from conception to completion allowed for genuine consultation and thoughtful design. The result strengthens village identity whilst serving immediate, practical community needs.Westminster City Council, FM Conway Ltd, WSP, and Marble Arch London BID each played instrumental roles throughout the design, consultation, and implementation periods. The scheme demonstrates what collaboration between landowners, local authorities, contractors, and BIDs can achieve when everyone commits to getting the details right.Interested in creating public realm spaces that strengthen local identity whilst serving practical community needs? Our design team would welcome a conversation about how thoughtful furniture choices can support both people and place.

Elevating the seating opportunities at Brunel University

Elevating the seating opportunities at Brunel University

Furnitubes International Ltd

The ProjectBrunel University is renowned for its innovation: it’s the number one most international university in the UK, and located in a beautiful building that showcases organic curves, shapes, and glass. Greenery surrounds the University on all sides, giving the students who choose to live in the accommodation a beautiful view to enjoy, especially in spring when wildflowers bloom. Universities are miniature societies. Like miniature societies, Brunel University needed a space for the students to go when they weren’t in lectures, or in their dormitories; somewhere where they could linger over lunch, have time to reflect on their thoughts, and get into a friendly debate. We were approached by Ireland Albrecht, London-based Landscape Architects, as part of the RIBA Stage 2 (Concept Design) in 2022. In 2023, working with Blakedown Landscapes, we delivered what they wanted: a better place for students to sit.Project SolutionRailroad is a multifaceted furniture range. Implemented in modern areas, the timber and the metal accents add a touch of elegance to its surroundings. When implemented in a campus that already has plenty of greenery to focus on, Railroad’s timber blends into the background, providing a good place to sit and watch the birds in their nesting boxes and marshall your thoughts, but without standing out. The curved and straight lines of Railroad allowed us to get very detailed about the configurations we could use, providing seating opportunities both within the heart of the conversation, and on the outskirts. Ireland Albrecht, the landscape architect for Brunel University, was already familiar with our products, which made it far simpler for us to narrow down which of the lines would fit in best. Railroad, and its modularity, was the perfect fit for a campus that thrives on challenges and breaking the mould. OutcomeEven in the depths of winter, there is green at Brunel University. With our new seating installed, students can take shelter from the wind amongst the boughs of trees, and watch the seasons change as they ponder the next big innovation. More importantly, the seats have created a sense of well-being on campus, fostering an environment of support and acceptance within the often-hectic lives that students lead.

Excel London, Royal Docks: Linear ambition achieved through modular thinking

Excel London, Royal Docks: Linear ambition achieved through modular thinking

Furnitubes International Ltd

A new experience for the Royal DocksThe ambitious, large-scale regeneration of ExCeL London is a landmark project, set to transform the public experience of the Royal Docks. As part of this vision, John Robertson Architects (JRA) were tasked with designing the extensive new linear walkways and to create clear, inviting, and functional routes to guide visitors through the new space. The design approachThe architectural vision called for a strong, linear aesthetic to define the pathways. This required a family of street furniture that could provide visual consistency and harmony. Practicality was just as important as the aesthetic. The team needed a cost-effective, modular approach that could be adapted to different lengths.A key challenge was the introduction of greenery. The walkways' construction meant there was no room for in-ground planting, so any solution had to be entirely freestanding without compromising on scale or impact.A harmonious solutionJRA found a cohesive and intelligent solution within our modular ranges. For seating, our RailRoad Inline system was the natural choice. Its clever design, based on connectable start, mid, and end modules, is made for creating long, seamless runs of seating. This perfectly matched JRA's linear vision, offering an inviting and comfortable place for visitors to rest, while its modularity provided a cost-effective alternative to bespoke fabrication. The perfect linear aspect of the range is also soothing to the eye, creating an effortlessly pleasing aesthetic. To complement the seating and introduce vital greenery, the Fern range of planters was selected. As a robust, freestanding system, Fern solved the project's primary logistical challenge, allowing JRA to position large-scale planting precisely where it was needed. The planters’ clean, geometric lines sit in perfect harmony with the RailRoad seating, reinforcing the considered, linear feel of the entire space. And in the gorgeous Corten steel finish, the planters deliver colour contrast and that timeless look of permanence. The resultBy pairing these two ranges, JRA has created a public realm that is functional, beautiful, and welcoming. It’s a clear demonstration of how thoughtful, design-led modularity can transform an urban walkway into a restful and orderly realm of wellbeing.

Furnitubes’ long-term vision: building outdoor furniture for good

Furnitubes’ long-term vision: building outdoor furniture for good

Furnitubes International Ltd

Furnitubes’ Managing Director Catherine Barratt shares the company’s vision for the next twenty years — from climate-responsive design and sustainable materials to the partnerships and craftsmanship that define "furniture for good." Designing for generations we may never meetTwenty years from now, when someone rests on a Furnitubes bench, I hope they won't think about us at all. They'll be absorbed in conversation with a neighbour they've just met, or watching their grandchild discover that a table can be climbed, a planter can frame a game of hide-and-seek. They won't notice the craftsmanship that supports them; they'll simply feel welcome in a space that works. That's what success looks like to me. Not market dominance… just the quiet enrichment of everyday moments. Communities who know each other better. Neighbourhoods that feel genuinely looked after. Outdoor spaces that hold real social and economic value because they've been designed with care. What "for good" actually meansWhen we say we make urban furniture "for good," we're making a promise in both senses of the phrase. Good as in beneficial, certainly — furniture that serves communities well. But also good as in permanent, enduring, lasting. The two meanings can't be separated. Furniture that transforms spaces into realms of wellbeing must be built to witness decades of those transformations. This commitment shapes every decision we make. Climate change isn't a future concern we're preparing for; it's a present reality we're responding to. The furniture we place in outdoor spaces today must withstand not just British weather as we've known it, but weather patterns we're still trying to understand. The advantage of looking inwardWe're fortunate to be part of BAMUK Group Ltd.; it’s how we continue to keep our production standards high. When we wanted a way to protect our furniture for generations, we partnered with Custom Wytelyne, to develop the Triple Process powder coating protocol. When we require specific fabrication, we draw on decades of collective expertise. This approach brings efficiencies that planned obsolescence could never match, because we're not constantly seeking the cheapest supplier or the fastest turnaround. We're building relationships that allow us to do our best work. These partnerships also keep us honest about materials. We're in an ongoing conversation about what durability really means, how craftsmanship adapts as options evolve, and which innovations serve genuine longevity rather than merely appearing modern. We're also constantly streamlining our product range, which might seem counterintuitive in a market that often equates breadth with capability. But we're craftspeople, not catalogue manufacturers. Each product we offer must justify its existence… not through novelty, but through solving a real need in a way that will remain relevant for generations. This discipline comes from our caring spirit, which keeps us curious. We're always searching for ways to improve outdoor spaces, for more sustainable materials and methodologies, and for partnerships with institutions that share our commitment to evidence-based design. Moreover, when you care for your team and create space for them to feel relaxed and open, innovation follows naturally. What keeps me awake at night (and what gets me up in the morning!)Honestly? Inclusivity keeps me awake at night. I think about safe, happy outdoor spaces that welcome everyone regardless of age, gender, ability, or race. I think about proxemics, about how different groups use space differently, about what makes a place feel genuinely accessible rather than merely compliant. We have products to develop that will serve needs we're only beginning to understand. But that same concern is what excites me most. We're learning about the life of social outdoor spaces in ways that previous generations never could. We're partnering with researchers, gathering evidence, demonstrating that transforming outdoor spaces into realms of wellbeing is practical investment in reduced healthcare costs, improved social cohesion, and enhanced biodiversity. The challenge ahead isn't whether demand will exist for beautiful, effective outdoor furniture. The challenge will be keeping pace with that demand once we've proven what thoughtfully designed public spaces can achieve for humanity and the planet.Craftsmanship as sustainabilityI see craftsmanship as essential to sustainable manufacturing. Not craftsmanship as artisanal decoration, but as fundamental integrity. When something is well made, it can be maintained. When it's thoughtfully designed, it can be repaired. When it's built with lasting materials, it can be refreshed decades later rather than replaced. We're building out a repair and maintenance service that aligns with these values, which is, in my view, the natural extension of making furniture designed to outlast us all. If we're serious about our responsibility to future generations, we must support the furniture we create throughout its entire working life. The spark that remainsI remember watching a child use our furniture in a way we didn’t exactly plan for: a bench became a stage, and a table transformed into a fortress… all while their grandparents sat nearby on another piece we'd designed. That moment contained the best of the future we’re trying to build toward: multiple generations sharing space, furniture supporting uses its designers hadn't prescribed, family connections strengthened through simple proximity in a well-designed setting. That spark still drives every decision we’re making at Furnitubes. Sure, times change. The urban landscape evolves. And our tools and materials advance. But people always deserve beautiful products that last. That's the legacy worth leaving. That's the long view we're building towards. And that's what "for good" truly means.

Highgate Road, Kentish Town - Creating community among the clouds

Furnitubes International Ltd

Location: 17-37 Highgate Road, Kentish Town, London NW5 1JY Client: GM Developments Products: AKRI Snap, Elements, Hollo, Rooftop, Fern planters Sector: Residential / RooftopSometimes the most thoughtful urban spaces exist where you'd least expect them, and this one happens to be seven stories above the bustling streets of Kentish Town. Now, 47 residents can share something rather special: a rooftop realm that feels both entirely urban and refreshingly removed from the city below. The projectWhen GM Developments approached us through our colleagues at Outdoor Deck, they arrived with ambitious plans and a practical challenge. They had designed a fantastic rooftop space using bespoke elements, but needed to bring their vision within a £40,000 budget without compromising the design intent. The beauty of such constraints lies in how they spark creative collaboration. Our first suggestion was to rationalise the very bespoke steel retaining wall planters into our AKRI Snap system: integrated seating within substantial planters that would maintain the design's integrity whilst delivering exceptional value. Using our configurator, we illustrated how these would transform the rooftop drawings into a lived reality.Project solutionsAKRI Snap forms the backbone of the space, providing generous planting areas with integrated seating that feels like refuges within the city. Residents find themselves sitting not beside nature, but within it — surrounded by the hum of bees and the rustle of leaves whilst London spreads beneath them.Fern planters create gentle boundaries around the rooftop's edges, offering privacy between levels whilst softening sight lines. They perform that delicate dance of creating intimacy without isolation.Thetford tables bring contemporary picnic table functionality to the space – perfect for al fresco entertaining or the increasingly common sight of working outdoors. Their angular profiles mirror the clean lines of the building itself.Hollo table and benches establish a more casual gathering point, arranged like a low-level coffee table setup that encourages lingering conversations and quiet moments of contemplation. An Elements bench, tucked thoughtfully into a corner, provides that essential quiet getaway, proof that even communal spaces need pockets of solitude. The craft in the details The angular profiles of the Thetford tables weren't chosen arbitrarily. They echo the building's architectural language, creating visual harmony between furniture and architecture. Different seating heights and configurations provide varied experiences within a single space, allowing the rooftop to accommodate different moods and group sizes. Most importantly, the AKRI Snap integrated seating allows residents to be truly immersed in the planting, intensifying that precious feeling of escape whilst remaining thoroughly connected to their urban home. The transformationThis was a new-build rooftop, so there's no dramatic before-and-after story. Instead, there's something perhaps more meaningful: the story of a space designed to become part of people's daily lives from the very first day.We met one resident on his moving-in day – a father who had chosen this particular flat for his son and daughter because of the rooftop. He described the views and the feeling of respite as "a gift," and made the rooftop his first destination when settling his children into their new London home.Looking aheadIn five years' time, we hope to discover a community of residents bonded by their shared outdoor sanctuary… neighbours who've developed friendships that would never have flourished in empty corridors or brief lift encounters. We also envision a thriving community of wildlife. The planters already buzz with bees, and we hope the space will feel increasingly shared with nature, creating that rare urban experience where city living and biodiversity enhance rather than compete with each other. What makes us most proud isn't just the furniture we've supplied, but the life we've helped facilitate. Forty-seven residents and the building's staff now have somewhere to meet, relax, and build community. We've introduced biodiversity to a rooftop space whilst staying within budget and adding lasting value to residents' daily experience. This is urban furniture working as it should: not just filling space, but creating the conditions for connection, contemplation, and the quiet moments that make city living truly liveable.Interested in creating your own rooftop community space? Our design team would love to explore how thoughtfully chosen furniture can transform your outdoor areas into places where people naturally gather, relax, and connect.

Seating has been provided alongside the paths of Euston Road in Camden to offer pedestrians the opportunity to rest and enjoy the green space in what is otherwise a very concrete-dominated local built environment. The contemporary styling and robust construction of Furnitubes’ RailRoad made it the ideal choice for the tough demands of this busy site. Three seating units were supplied in total - all from the ‘Loop’ family within the RailRoad range - comprising two simple straight benches and a combination assembly of a straight seat with backrest adjoined to a curved bench unit.

The Strand - wall-top seating and planters

The Strand Aldwych is a busy public area well-known as a procession route between Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral. The area was historically plagued by traffic and pollution, so people were reluctant to dwell for long periods of time. The newly pedestrianised area with stone walls already in place needed public seating outside St Clement Danes Church. Coordinating the wall shape with the stone underneath was imperative, and access was needed to the lighting drivers through the platforms since the stone underneath is illuminated with LEDs. With this in mind, our design team worked collaboratively to develop a bespoke version of our modular RailRoad seating design, based on the principles where interchangeable parts can be easily removed or replaced. A RailRoad wall-top solution was created with a custom curve to match the stone walls, and the platforms have removable hatches for access when needed. The bespoke RailRoad seating solution is manufactured from our triple processed (recycled) steel and powder coated in a distinct metallic copper finish - while the iroko timbers were coated with UV protective finish in teak to maintain their natural look. This project focused on improving air quality, and our AKRI retaining planters were ideal for bringing green into the space. Their flexibility also allowed for matching the geometry of the adjacent stone benches and roads. In order to prevent damage, welded anti skates were incorporated into the solution. The project not only provides health and well-being benefits with the new public landscaped areas, it will preserve the historic character and for the first time allow people to appreciate the nearby listed buildings. The new inclusive seating spaces for people to mix in are seen to be well used as people can enjoy their lunch, meet with friends and colleagues and simply enjoy a sense of community.
