BriggsAmasco is one of the very few companies with the capacity to provide up to twenty directly employed skilled asphalters for a project of this size. Re-surfacing the southbound main span of this famous suspension bridge, working only at weekends, the asphalt was laid in bays by hand to a thickness of 38mm, the material being delivered directly to site in thermostatically controlled hot charge vehicles by Permanite.

This roof was curved across both its width and length, in addition to being curved on plan. Satellite Navigation was used to pinpoint the co-ordinates on the roof in order that it could be clipped out correctly.

Receipts dating back more than 100 years prove the firm which originally fitted Glasgow School of Art’s roof is the same company which has been contracted to install its replacement a century later. The incredible discovery was made when industrial and commercial roofing company, BriggsAmasco, was commissioned to build the new roof at the school’s historic Mackintosh Building which was severely damaged in a fire last year.

BriggsAmasco has completed the installation of an intensive and high performance green roof system for the EcoCampus at Hamilton International Park, a sustainable business community located south east of Glasgow. With environmental considerations at the forefront of this design, the 7,500m2 roofing system had to provide more than just traditional protection from rainwater. Having been used on other parts of the Business Park, HFD Group’s design team specified the durable and self-healing monolithic waterproofing membrane Hydrotech Monolithic MM6125 and an intensive ZinCo green roof system featuring planter zones, small plants, shrubs and bushes.

The main roof area and the side ballroom roof, 3000m2 in total, were waterproofed with Permatec Hot Melt system with an extruded insulation MK layer paved walkways and 20/40 gravel ballast to the remaining areas. The Plant room roof 500M2 1.8 Sarnafil Light Grey mech fixed to metal deck and insulation. Level 8 a secret gutter was waterproofed by Hyflex using Exemplar liquid applied waterproofing,above the gutter marine ply was installed to joists to create as balcony which was subsequently waterproofed by Hyflex again using Exemplar BW system.

BriggsAmasco has recently topped off the new £25 million Thomas Ferens Academy, as part of Hull’s Building Schools for the Future. Combining long term waterproofing integrity with a fast application, the specialist team from BriggsAmasco completed the flagship BSF scheme on time and to an exceptionally high standard. For the main roof areas, BriggsAmasco installed a Sarnavap vapour control layer and 130mm thick tapered and flat insulation which was laid on trapezoidal decking. This 5600m2 watertight, high performance roofing system was completed with the mechanically fixed Sarnafil G and S 1.2mm thick single ply membranes.

BriggsAmasco undertook resurfacing at King’s Cross Station, improving platforms and walkways, as part of the station’s wider redevelopment programme. A team of eight BriggsAmasco operatives and managers carried out works throughout the night on a shift basis over a three month period. Using a mastic asphalt system laid across concrete floor slabs, platforms one to eight will each benefit from new surfaces, following removal of any existing asphalt. The new asphalt has been mixed with luminous sand which provides both an aesthetically pleasing finish whilst offering a good foot grip and finish.

At the new £11.2 million integrated policing facility at Kittybrewster in Aberdeen, Balfour Beatty required a high performance roofing system for the 4,518m2 building. As on-going partner of the main contractor, BriggsAmasco was appointed to deliver a highly skilled and efficient application including waterproofing, sedum mats and 60 rooflights. With the project aiming for a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’, a complex roof system comprising green roof, waterproofing and rooflights was specified. Our state-of-the-art asphalt ‘finisher’ ensured a new car park was equipped with a rapid-delivery, watertight surface despite poor weather conditions. BriggsAmasco was selected by contractors, ESH Border Construction, to install car park decking covering an area totalling 8,000m2 at Lloyd BMW car dealership in Carlisle. With work starting in November 2016, BriggsAmasco’s skilled installers were presented with a challenging two-month deadline in which to complete the project during the year’s most inclement season.

BriggsAmasco operatives applied a liquid 3mm layer of Bauder Bakor 790-II to the roofing deck to infill and bond any minor deviations in the substrate. This was followed by a layer of polyester reinforcement to strengthen the system and provide a uniform surface. An additional 3mm layer of Bauder Bakor 790-II was then liquid applied to create a completed 6mm monolithic membrane, forming a flexible and robust waterproofing layer that would effectively prevent water ingress for the design life of the building.

In September 2003, the Met Office moved its headquarters from Berkshire to the purpose-built £80 million structure designed, built and managed by a G4S-led consortium. When a number of louvres on the east and west elevations of the 57,000m2 headquarters began to show signs of failure, G4S appointed BriggsAmasco to supply and fit a new system that would combine airflow efficiency and rain defence.

The facility based at Milton Keynes University Hospital, Eaglestone, Buckinghamshire is designed to bring more complex treatments for cancer patients, such as co-locating oncology, clinical haematology and chemotherapy programmes, under one roof. The new £34 million super school in Wales, BriggsAmasco installed a complete roof system comprising steel deck, high performance PIR insulation, single ply membrane and mono-pitch rooflights that will help to create an energy self-sufficient school. Built by Willmott Dixon for Ceredigion Council, the 11,200m2 facility merges five schools – Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi, Aberbanc, Coedybryn, Llandysul, and Pontsian – to form the county’s second ‘all-through’ school. Set to accommodate 1,000 primary and secondary pupils, it incorporates many sustainable features including photovoltaic panels, and will use natural light and ventilation to minimise energy use and running costs.

On the world-famous Liverpool waterfront, BriggsAmasco’s has helped to create a stunning, new £9.5 million Pier Head Terminal for Mersey Ferries. After applying a 10mm mastic asphalt vapour control layer to reduce the diffusion of moisture into the roof insulation, the team installed a cork bond insulation to create an ideal base to receive the waterproofing.

In conjunction with contractors, Interserve and acoustic consultants, Arup, BriggsAmasco was selected to supply a total of four roofs to cover the building’s various aspects. The installation not only had to achieve a thermal performance of 0.15 W/m2K, it was required to meet the stringent acoustic performance requirements of BB93.

Teddington School is situated on the banks of the Thames in, southwest London and was developed under the governments BSF scheme. The project comprises a large central roof weathered with a single ply membrane applied over an engineered structural timber deck, surrounded by inverted roof areas with ballast or paving. At the front of the building we installed a series of large diameter feature rainwater downpipes.

This was a complex project associated with the expansion of a major shopping centre in the middle of Derby carried out while trading still continued. BriggsAmasco laid over 21,000 square metres of asphalt to the car park area and 10,500 square metres of polymer modified asphalt to the roof, using an inverted specification. At various periods, over 20 operatives were working at any one time in order to meet the deadlines associated with new store openings, but the whole contract was delivered on time and within budget.

Working with main contractor MACE, BriggsAmasco was appointed to design and specify a roofing system that would guarantee waterproofing integrity and deliver long term performance – whilst also meeting the project’s stylish aesthetics. The company supplied a combination of IKO PermaTEC Hot Melt, IKO Polimar seamless waterproofing systems and high end granite paving.

BriggsAmasco has installed a complete roofing system comprising more than 3,000m2 of single ply membrane at The Square in Leatherhead – providing a watertight finish to the first new-build office scheme in the town for over four years. BriggsAmasco was appointed as principal contractor to apply roof coverings to four buildings as part of this large new-build commercial development. The company specified and installed a comprehensive roofing system from Sarnafil that included the G410-EL and 327-18EL waterproofing membranes – both supplied in light grey.

The Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, one of 600 listed building in Halifax, attracts 40,000 visitors a year to the 300 plays it stages annually. Built in 1772, the site was taken over in 1988 by the Square Chapel Trust – a consortium of local theatre lovers – who transformed the derelict structure and in 2012, gained Arts Council backing for a £5.4 million redevelopment to include an extension to accommodate a new 120-seat auditorium and cinema.
