Experience Spectacular Curved Glass Designs with evguard® - Soho Place, London, UK

OVERVIEW

Soho Place represents a monumental urban development that leverages the introduction of Crossrail to enhance the extensive transformation of the eastern end of Oxford Street. This project is a striking blend of architecture, urban revitalization, and cultural spaces, marking a significant and lively addition to London's cityscape.

The development includes two new mixed-use buildings surrounding a new civic plaza called Soho Place, the first new street name in Soho in 72 years.

The northern structure, designated as No. 1 Soho Place, is a prominent ten-storey, two-tier building located above the Tottenham Court Road station, on Europe's busiest shopping street.

It offers 33,000 square feet of retail space over three levels (ground, basement, and first floors), identified as No.1 Oxford Street, along with 191,000 square feet of office space spread over nine floors.

The southern structure, No. 2/4 Soho Place, is a nine-storey building comprising two sections.

The lower section houses the first newly constructed West End theatre in 50 years, inspired by Nica Burns’ youthful visit to Epidaurus, featuring constellations set in midnight blue interiors, accentuated with backlit marble and royal gold-colored metalwork.

Above the theatre are 18,000 square feet of independent office spaces known as Soho Skygardens, designed by AHMM, offering stunning views across London.

These office floors are mostly column-free, each with a generous external terrace, and are accessed by a vertical 'superlift,' envisioned as a vertically moving room with warehouse-style doors.

The @sohoplace project is part of Derwent London's £300 million regeneration initiative, encompassing 285,000 square feet that include offices, retail spaces, and a new piazza.

The project was designed by architect Simon Allford, founder of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and current president of RIBA, who remarked, “@sohoplace is undoubtedly the most complex and delightful project I have ever worked on: the highly engineered architecture and design of a Swiss watch but built on an urban scale.”

Collaborating with engineers Arup and construction company Laing O’Rourke, the project features a heart that is a curved, air-conditioned auditorium with 602 blue seats offering ample legroom.

Its advanced acoustic design negates the need for microphones or loud stage performances, with no interference from the nearby transport network.

Overseen by Ms. Burns, @sohoplace is intended to bring a new dimension to the vibrant West End.

Burns consulted with audiences, actors, playwrights such as James Graham, directors like Marianne Elliott, and other creatives to shape this space.

The development includes a rehearsal area with a mirrored wall and ballet barre, an open-air corner terrace, and a green room with its own bar, named after the producer with her handwritten name in pink neon lights.

Astrological signs embellish the restaurant, and lights sparkle beneath the building's canopy entrance.

Burns stated, “Theatre is about magic. Let’s make this a magic space.”

Specializing in laminated glass design, FINIGLAS Veredelungs GmbH elevates the unique aesthetic with evguard® and Stone Veneer (Fini Stone VSG/TVG Glass Stone Laminate).

The project includes 240m² of Fini Stone VSG/TVG Glass Stone Laminate, featuring Stone Veneer in various glass structures, approximately 60m² of curved glass-stone laminates, and roughly 180m² of flat glass-stone laminates.

Preparatory work for the stones was done by LIXOS GMBH. Both companies were facing challenges such as transporting and handling the stones from Italy to southern Germany and then to Muensterland.

Special equipment was built to safely transport thin stone slabs, measuring just 1.5mm or even 0.8mm thick, without breakage during the lamination process.

FINIGLAS Veredelungs GmbH maintained constant communication with Soho Place’s owners to select the precise locations and patterns for each stone.
