Enhancing Glasgow Airport’s Infrastructure with Twinfix Canopy Expertise

OVERVIEW

A Major Investment in Glasgow Airport

Earlier this year, a £350 million capital investment was announced to support the redevelopment of AGS Airports, with the majority allocated to Glasgow Airport. This five-year programme marks the most significant investment in the airport’s infrastructure in over a decade. Planned works include the modernisation of the main terminal, the first full refurbishment of gate areas in 30 years, and expanded airside retail, dining, and operational facilities. The programme also includes improvements to airfield infrastructure and a focus on energy efficiency, with completion targeted for 2027.

Twinfix’s Role in Supporting Glasgow Airport’s Infrastructure Vision

As part of this wider redevelopment, Twinfix was appointed to design, manufacture and install three bespoke aluminium canopies to support the airport’s expanding infrastructure and connectivity between buildings.

Project Overview

  • Canopy 1:
  • Free-standing reverse mono-pitch structure
  • 5.5m run length × 2.8m projection
  • Includes 2 louvred side panels
  • Canopy 2:
  • Free-standing reverse mono-pitch structure
  • 18m run length × 2.5m projection
  • Includes 3 louvred side panels
  • Canopy 3:
  • Cantilever mono-pitch structure
  • 2m run length × 1.2m projection

All canopies were powder coated in RAL 7024, with ellipsoid blade louvre panels finished in RAL 7037, complementing the surrounding architecture and delivering a refined, modern appearance.

Why Twinfix Canopies Are Ideal for the Aviation Sector

Airports require infrastructure that can perform under demanding conditions, where operational continuity, durability and user experience are critical. Twinfix canopy systems are designed to meet these challenges.

  • Modular and fast to install
  • Off-site fabrication allows for efficient delivery and installation in live environments with minimal disruption.
  • Durable and low maintenance
  • Aluminium frames are non-corrosive and powder-coated to withstand exposure, delivering a long service life with reduced maintenance requirements.
  • Weather protection for staff and passengers
  • Louvred side panels provide protection from wind and rain while maintaining airflow and visibility.
  • Adaptable to site requirements
  • Reverse mono-pitch and cantilever designs were chosen to suit site-specific constraints, with full customisation in colour and finish.
  • Compliant and safe
  • Where required, Twinfix systems incorporate the Multi-Link-Panel NF roof system, ensuring compliance with HSE non-fragile roofing guidelines.

Supporting Glasgow Airport’s Strategic Development

Twinfix’s involvement at Glasgow Airport aligns with the wider infrastructure strategy by enhancing covered access and modular transitions between terminals, temporary buildings and operational areas. These canopies help improve passenger flow, increase comfort, and support operational efficiency while contributing to the airport’s long-term vision.

Twinfix is proud to contribute to this transformational programme, supporting airport infrastructure across the UK with high-quality, design-led canopy systems that are built to last. We look forward to seeing the full Glasgow Airport redevelopment come to life in the months ahead.
