Vebro Polymers

A hard-wearing durable levelling screed was required for a major redevelopment project at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife. Originally opened in 1967, the facility is one of two main hospitals in the county, serving the town and mid-Fife area.  Extended in 2012, the hospital features an East, West and South and a main tower block, housing an accident and emergency department; maternity unit, an ENT unit, anaesthesia, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric surgery, mental health services, infectious diseases and operating theatres.   When complete, the latest expansion to the Edinburgh hospital, representing a £33m investment that was approved in early 2021, will see the hospital gain 140 additional parking spaces in a new parking facility, as well as 3 operating theatres, a supporting inpatient ward and associated outpatient facilities.Vebro Polymers has provided v-Cem – a rapid-drying, high-strength, shrinkage-compensated screed that can be applied prior to the installation of commercial floor coverings, including carpet, titles, laminate or hard-wearing resin finishes.Laid at depths between 10.0 mm and 55.0 mm and beyond, v-Cem can be used to form screeds that are bonded, unbonded and floating screed applications, and is suited to use in both internal and external applications — ideal for the in-progress construction site of Victoria Hospital. The expansion of the hospital has included many phases and trades, each keen to maintain momentum to deliver the finished facility in good time. v-Cem will dry in as little as 4 days to receive resin finishes and other resilient floor coverings.

THE PROJECTThe University of Hertfordshire project features multiple different mailbox styles, including banks of boxes freestanding with support pedestals and also single mailboxes mounted upon a wall. The banks of multiple boxes feature a ‘Dry Riser’ product that has been incorporated in to the unit to minimise the amount of space used outside of the student residence. The pedestals that the unit is mounted upon have been designed and manufactured to securely hold both the mailboxes and Dry Riser product. The COM 2 – 145 mailbox is the chosen product for the external banks of mailboxes. They have been combined with complete weather cladding that ensures that mailboxes are weather resistant and withstand inclement British weather. The banks of mailboxes have been designed with an opening that the Dry Riser product is fitted into, mounting of this product is simple with the use of installed fitting brackets. The ‘town houses’ in this project use a COM 1 – 389 double depth mailbox fitted onto the external wall of the property. The double depth variation of the COM 1 – 389 mailboxes allows for additional mail storage, perfect for residences with multiple occupants and users who will be expecting large deposits of mail on a regular basis. All products featured on the University of Hertfordshire project are polyester powder coated with a RAL 7015 – Slate Grey colour that matches the branding guidelines of the residence. All mailboxes are engraved with unique numbers that easily show the mailbox that is for each user. Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln

Rapid Ramp Limited

REQUIREMENT: In order to enhance wheelchair accessibility to the cathedral, it was necessary to install both internal and external ramps to overcome the steps.END RESULT:Great care was exercised when installing the ramps to preserve the cathedral's floors and walls. These ramps do not require any ground or wall attachments; once the components are securely bolted together, their weight ensures stability. Additionally, slip-resistant rubber tiles have been placed beneath each support foot.Should wedding parties wish to take photos at the entrances without the ramps in the frame, these systems can be easily disassembled before the event and reinstalled afterwards. This flexibility is a unique advantage neither wooden nor concrete ramps can offer.FEATURES INCLUDED: Mesh Platform - self-draining mesh allows water to pass through rather than collect on the surface.Trombone Ends - these are added to the ends of a Rapid Ramp to prevent clothes catching.Telescopic Legs - these can be adjusted to accommodate threshold heights.Standard Colour Black - ramps are powder-coated black to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint.EXTRA FEATURES INCLUDED:Infill Handrail - this product prevents children from climbing or falling through gaps.Yellow Tread - this is a safety feature designed to help those with impaired vision identify the nose of the ramp and helps users distinguish any level changes.Standard Step Unit - an ideal addition to any ramp installation, providing the access needed for able-bodied users. They can also be stand-alone units, independent of the Rapid Ramp System.

Rockfon Lamella wins Product Innovation of the Year at the Finishes & Interiors Sector Awards 2023

Rockfon Lamella wins Product Innovation of the Year at the Finishes & Interiors Sector Awards 2023

Rockfon

Rockfon® Lamella has been awarded Product Innovation of the Year in the Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment category of the FIS Innovation Awards 2023. The modular wall system provides Class A sound absorption for commercial projects and boasts a unique range of wood veneers in different colours and dimensions, allowing for an impressive 650,000 design combinations.Nigel Watkins, Commercial Sales Director for Rockfon, expressed his excitement about the recognition, saying, "We are thrilled that Rockfon Lamella has won this award only a few weeks after its launch." Rockfon Lamella's development was based on effective collaboration, knowledge transfer, and partnership along the project team, satisfying two initial criteria for Rockfon innovation: modularity and customisability, and occupiers' well-being through the use of colour, biophilic-inspired design, and natural surfaces.Combining the warmth and beauty of wood with a stone wool sound-absorbent panel, Rockfon Lamella creates a serene and inviting environment inspired by the biophilic design trend. Customers have expressed their satisfaction with the combination of these elements, with Nigel Watkins sharing that "The feedback we’ve had from customers is that the combination of a stone wool sound absorbent panel with biophilic wood makes interiors feel calm and connected to nature."Joe Cilia , Technical Director of FIS who was one of the Innovation Award judges, was impressed that Rockfon Lamella has such comprehensive test data, covering the whole system, not just individual components. “The furniture, fixtures and equipment (FFE) sector suffers from a lack of standardised testing and compliance for acoustic and fire performance, leading to clients choosing products that don’t perform as well as they should. The judges were impressed that Rockfon Lamella has clear, transparent test data that shows how the whole system performs.”Rockfon Lamella sets itself apart from other acoustic fixtures and fittings by offering exceptional fire performance classification of c-S2,d0, in line with EN 13501 standards, and Class A sound absorption that adheres to ISO 11654 regulations. Additionally, accessing all the necessary specification data, BIM Objects, and CAD drawings on NBS Chorus, NBS Source, and pCON is quick and easy, making the specification process quick and effortless.Rockfon Lamella simplifies installation by providing a complete kit that includes all necessary components. In-house facilities teams can easily follow the straightforward installation process, thanks to specially designed mounting clips. As Teemu Rekonen, Head of Design & Innovation at Rockfon, highlights: "This advanced product... enables individual placement of the slats to create the perfect acoustic environment. Once the platform is in place, installing Lamella slats is a quick and hassle-free process that requires no tools".Visit www.soundsbeautiful.com/lamella  for more information on Rockfon Lamella. To view all the FIS Innovation Award winners visit www.thefis.org/membership-hub/fis-awards/innovation/

Ecocrib M6 J16-19, Knutsford to Crewe

Ecocrib M6 J16-19, Knutsford to Crewe

Hahn Plastics Ltd

The ChallengeIn 2015 Kier was awarded the £233 million project to build Cheshire’s first smart motorway to help keep traffic flowing between J16 (Crewe) – and J19 (Knutsford), this included 40 Miles of extra lanes, 21 overhead gantries, 18 emergency bays and 258 electronic signs. Hundreds of metres of retaining walls were needed to allow clearance for the emergency refuge areas (ERA’s) and the overhead gantries to be built within the highway boundaries. “As infrastructures had a major impact on the M6 J16-19 critical path a cost-effective solution was needed to reduce the overall time of installation.” A durable, robust, economical, and sustainable retaining wall solution with a British Board of Agreement (BBA) Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme (HAPAS) certificate was required to satisfy the Highways Agency. The Solution Several EcoCrib mass gravity retaining walls now support the embankments along the M6 J16-J19 to provide clearance for many of the ERA’s and Gantry Bases. Designed, supplied, and installed by PC Construction. Awarded a BBA HAPAS certificate in 2012 with a design life in excess of 120 years, Ecocrib is structurally robust yet the most highly sustainable retaining solution currently available for highway applications. It was the only retaining option that didn’t need heavy lifting equipment to complete the job which made it the safer option. It also allows the installation to be quicker and cheaper than the other options available. Ian Potts quoted on behalf of Highways England “The savings are easily calculated as the installation was priced by a pilling contractor at £41,975 and the installation cost of EcoCrib was £24,177 delivering a saving of £17,798 (£395.51/m). Total savings for the M6 project is 270m ( gantry bases) plus 390m ERA’s @ a total of 590m x £395.51p = £233,350 saving. However, other savings and benefits included: Installation time is 30% of alternative products i.e. 2 days against 7 days. Eliminates the need for lifting equipment, allows working in limited spacing, is environmentally friendly, improves aesthetics, and has a product life of 120 years. “ Developed from timber crib technology, the 50mm x 125mm Ecocrib profiles are considerably more durable than treated timber but possess many of the environmental benefits. Ecocrib profiles are manufactured entirely from recycled UK plastic waste with any wastage or surplus material re-processed to form new Ecocrib profiles. Ecocrib can be recycled when it reaches the end of its useful life. 1478 SQM of EcoCrib was used in the scheme equivalent to 17 million plastic bottle tops or 86 tonnes of plastic waste diverted from landfill. Highways England is now looking at the possibility of using EcoCrib for step installations and retaining wall heights higher than 1.5m.

Large Multipart Rooflight Provides Pool Room With An Abundance Of Natural Light And Sky Views

Glazing Vision Ltd

Glazing Vision worked closely with Architect, A R C Architecture Ltd, and Contractors, Matrod Frampton Ltd, on this incredible project located in Lymington, Hampshire, where the client was looking for their new pool room extension to include a large, flat rooflight, creating a peaceful and naturally lit room, perfect for a relaxing swim. They were also looking for a rooflight within the loft area of the home to allow natural daylight and ventilation to the space.Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze Fixed Multipart Rooflight in Slate Grey Matt was specified for the roof of the pool house, which was an impressive 3800mm x 10360mm in size, which almost mirrors the size of the swimming pool below.Bespoke glass was selected for this particular project. The double-glazed outer pane was made up of heat soak tested, toughened glass which offers a greater resistance to thermal stresses and provides better protection against glass breaking, reducing risk of injury, essential with a pool directly below.Argon gas filled the space between the panes of glass which helps insulate the room and minimises the transfer of heat through the glass along with a black warm edge spacer which is an insulating plastic composite material that becomes a barrier to heat loss. The inner pane consisted of heat soak tested, toughened, PVB laminated glass which prevents glass shattering under impact by holding the shards together on the membrane so they cannot become lethal, and includes a soft coat low E rating of 1.1, helping with the energy efficiency of the room by reducing energy costs. The product was tested to class 1 in accordance with CWCT TN66/67 which is essential for rooflights which might be walked on for occasional cleaning/ maintenance activities, and which will therefore need to support both the weight of people on the glass and their equipment, which may be required on this occasion. The rooflight was supplied in 6 sections with internal back-to-back angles at the joints between each section. The 6 sections were sized to achieve an equal split when viewed from underneath. Our Skydoor Electric Hinged Access Rooflight was specified on the roof of the loft space which is ideal for ventilation and regular access, and offers natural daylight to the space below. Intelligent actuators ensure synchronized operation between the two supporting mechanisms, so the Skydoor opens to a maximum 87° in one fluid, trouble-free motion, providing you with easy access to the space above. The glass was a double-glazed unit comprising of a heat soak tested, toughened, soft coat low E (1.1) outer pane, with Argon Gas within the space between the panes and black warm edge spacer, with the inner pane consisting of heat soak tested, toughened, PVB Laminated glass, and was also tested to class 1.Both rooflights were expertly installed by our sister brand, Glazing Renovations.“Glazing Vision were helpful in explaining the two different upstands required for the different glazing systems. The installation team were helpful and carried out their work in a professional manor.” – Steve Davies, Site Manager, Matrod Frampton.

Cherryfield Drive, Liverpool

IKO UK

BriefAs part of the drive to revitalise Kirkby Town Centre, the local authority, Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, has been significantly investing in regeneration works. A redundant B&M shopping centre formed an important part of the uplift. At 36,000 sq ft, the empty precinct was the largest vacant unit in the town centre and was in need of significant repair and modernisation. Bringing the building up to date was crucial in encouraging businesses back to the area and delivering more choice of retail outlets to visitors. The project was estimated to cost £1.66million, with £450,000 allocated to the roof renovation, which was to be carried out by Paramount Roofing Systems, in association with IKO.ChallengesThe busy, central location of the shopping centre presented several challenges for the roof installation. The existing roof needed a comprehensive refurbishment, including stripping back to the metal decking and removal of all layers and outdated materials.A total of 48 redundant skylights needed to be carefully and meticulously taken out as they were no longer needed or functional. Any obsolete ventilation fans and plant equipment also had to be removed, as streamlining roof space was essential for efficiency. This all had to take place before the installation commenced. When it came to delivery of materials, there was limited laydown due to the surrounding live loading bays for neighbouring shops and this lack of space also affected the storage of the materials on-site.Inclement weather presented a significant challenge for the team. Despite operations taking place during the summer, torrential downpours were frequent. Protecting the integrity of the building was paramount to ensure the businesses below the installation could continue trading without risk of water ingress or leaks.SolutionAs this was such an expansive project, it was important that the roofing system was robust, easy to install and would stand the test of time. IKO worked with Paramount Roofing Systems to ensure the most suitable solution was specified for the replacement roof.A fully built-up bituminous felt warm roof was chosen as the best option, as it was designed to ensure effective insulation, weatherproofing and longevity for many years to come.To mitigate disruption to nearby trade, Paramount Roofing Systems effectively coordinated with local businesses for the duration of the project. The team established a robust schedule, so that construction activity was minimally affected by the town centre’s busy hours and zoned time restrictions.A telescopic forklift truck was hired specifically for the project, to handle offloading and loading more efficiently and allow the team to move more precisely within the confined space. Four operatives were trained to ensure that the forklift truck was used safely, which was imperative given the high footfall close to the site.IKO arranged for bulk materials to be delivered directly to the roof to help overcome the issue of restricted space. Materials were also stored off-ground and covered at all times with strategically placed tarpaulins to avoid water damage from the persistent rain.Despite the wet weather conditions hindering progress, the project was delivered just over the expected time frame of 8-10 weeks. The collaboration between IKO and Paramount Roofing Systems was pivotal in ensuring that the project met and exceeded requirements – contributing to an integral building that promises to give a much-needed boost to Kirkby town centre.

TGP Help Mark New Era with Manhattan Plank Paving at Greg’s PlaceTGP Landscape Architects Ltd was assigned the task of designing the landscape at Greg’s Place, a vibrant outdoor community space which at the University of York, replacing the previous dilapidated Vanbrugh Piazza. Helping TGP to mark a new era for the University, Tobermore supplied the landscape architect with modern Manhattan plank paving and Granite Step Units which were used to create a unique, striking hard landscape.Greg’s Place was named in honour of Greg Dyke, a highly respected journalist, broadcaster, and chairman of The Football Association, who was additionally Chancellor at the University for 11 years.Andrew Gardener, Director at TGP, explained how the company won the opportunity to be involved in the refurbishment scheme: “The original site (Vanbrugh Piazza) was designed in the 1960’s and had gone unused for years, having never been updated. We took part in a competition being run by the University of York to come up with a design for a multi-functional space that students could use. We won the competition and presented a proposal to Greg Dyke and the Student Union, taking their opinions on board and the students ‘a year in the life’ concept that reflected the events taking place throughout the year for students – festivals, Christmas markets, graduations, etc.”TGP’s design concept had to meet a variety of requirements. Andrew noted: “The strong central axis of the site, which runs North / South from Vanbrugh College, was further enhanced by extending it out into the lake and placing a large timber and galvanised steel feature seating window on it. The space itself needed to be flexible enough for multi-purpose use and needed to work on a North / South and East / West axis.“Greg Dyke wanted a large screen installed for the communal screening of sports and movies on the College building to the West of the site. Timber, circular seating and a raised grass terrace were included to create multiple viewing directions within the site.”Andrew explained the selection of materials for the landscape at Greg’s Place:“For the hard landscaping, we knew that paving needed to be a versatile, cost effective, hard-wearing solution for the scheme.”ANDREW GARDENER, DIRECTOR AT TGP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS LTDTobermore paving products were an obvious choice for TGP and Andrew was particularly impressed with Tobermore’s Premium Collection’s Manhattan plank paving system: “I liked the large format size; the mixed size units and the variety of colours available with the product are impressive and it is always good to see paving that is different to the standard often seen in public spaces.”Manhattan was ideal for creating a contemporary look at Greg’s Place as it is manufactured with a sparkling granite aggregate surface layer, reflecting the aesthetics of natural granite that is popular in European cities.TGP specified the product in Silver and Mid Grey, forming a subtle colour pattern. The landscape architect selected Tobermore’s Granite Step Unit as a stepping solution, which was a wonderful, modern accompaniment to Manhattan as Granite Step Units are manufactured with a similar granite aggregate surface finish.Andrew commented on the results of Greg’s Place:“We are delighted with the finished look of the scheme and the University is pleased that students, staff and visitors are making use of the area in a way they never did before.ANDREW GARDENER, DIRECTOR AT TGP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS LTD“We are very happy with the products supplied by Tobermore as they have given a great contemporary feel to the space.“We plan to use Tobermore products again for forthcoming projects.”

Frederick Holmes School

Innova Care Concepts

The Frederick Holmes School in Hull was a new-build project we worked on a few years back. The school was designed to cater for students aged 2 to 19 with severe physical and learning disabilities. Classrooms and hygiene rooms needed full hoist coverage to allow students and staff to move anywhere within the room. We even let the school trial our hoist units whilst they were deciding which supplier to go with. Ultimately, the easiness of our hoist systems made them choose us to supply and install 32 X-Y hoist systems. Find out more on our website.

Peaceful contemplative secondary glazed silence at St Patricks Church by Selectaglaze

Selectaglaze Ltd

The congregation at Grade II Listed St Patricks Church in Bolton, can worship without interruptions from the neighbouring bus interchange, with the installation of acoustic secondary glazing. 4 large gothic arched stained glass clerestory windows were treated with internal glazed units, stopping the ingress of the sound of stationary busses which can create 70-80dB. However the tricky window was the large chancery window overlooking the altar as 4.3m (h) x 3m (w). When now inside the church, the congregation would never know there is a bus interchange just outside; the acoustic secondary glazing treatment has worked miracles.
