1800s Dutch Barn incorporates ECLISSE Pocket Door Systems

1800s Dutch Barn incorporates ECLISSE Pocket Door Systems

Eclisse UK

Derek Coffey, a college lecturer, renovated a traditional 1800s-built Dutch barn in Llansilin, near Oswestry, Shropshire. The exterior of the barn is clad in burnt larch which looks fantastic and the interior of the home is equally impressive. When the renovation work reached an end in autumn 2023 the finished result was nothing short of stunning. The converted barn will now be a family home for Derek, his wife and their ten year old daughter.Coffey installed ECLISSE pocket door systems throughout the home in order to provide more usable space and better options for interior layouts. A total of ten pocket doors were installed, which were especially beneficial on both of the upstairs bedrooms leading onto ensuite bathrooms. “Installing pocket doors throughout the barn allowed us to save space and to use the space that we do have to better effect,” says Coffey. “We have another ensuite bedroom downstairs with a pocket door and the pocket doors on the downstairs toilet and utility room are especially beneficial as these doors would otherwise have clashed with one another when open – this problem is eliminated with sliding doors.”

Boots began as a local herbalist store and rapidly grew into the country’s largest chemists’ chain.Boots has pioneered the creation of affordable, reliable products, designed to make people look and feel good. Its emphasis on customer care has helped to make it one of the most trusted brands on the high street. These ASH103 handles are perfect for the high footfall that Boots stores receive because of their strong and robust design. They chose to powder coat the handles to align with their brand identity. Powder coating can also be used to create contrast within the look of the entrance. GEZE doors installed to memorial at St Paul's Cathedral

GEZE doors installed to memorial at St Paul's Cathedral

GEZE UK Limited

The Remember Me memorial portico at St Paul’s Cathedral is a physical memorial to all those that died as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Entered via the cathedral’s North Transept entrance it is home to the online book of remembrance. Designed by Caroe Architecture with Connolly Wellingham, the portico is a beautiful, elliptical structure crafted in the UK and featuring several GEZE doors. As a visitor enters the cathedral from the North Transept they pass through a pair of swing doors powered by GEZE Powerturn automatic swing door operators. These doors take the visitor into the memorial and were chosen as they can open large or heavy doors and offer the flexibility of allowing the doors to be used both manually and automatically due to GEZE’s Smart swing function.Above the doors, etched in to the structure in gold are the words ‘ Remembering all who died as a result of the coronavirus pandemic’. Once inside the portico, visitors can view the online Remember Me memorial, search for and view the tribute to their loved one, light a candle and take a moment to pause and reflect in this tranquil space. The online book is open to all people, whatever their faith or none. From the memorial portico the main entrance into the cathedral is through GEZE’s TSA 325 NT, a manual revolving door with 4 leaves. The revolving door was chosen as it minimises air flow into the cathedral as only one quadrant is open at a time. To ensure access for all a GEZE Slimdrive SCR curved automatic sliding doors was installed opposite the revolving door enabling those who are less able, or people with children in buggies, can still visit the memorial and access the cathedral. The Slimdrive SCR is controlled by wave sensors to ensure the doors only open when requested. This is part of the portico’s design to minimise air flow.Across all the glass in the doors are beautiful phrases such as ‘we will always remember’ and ‘never forget’. The Remember Me memorial portico is a poignant tribute to those who died as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and is the most significant change to St Paul’s Cathedral in 300 years. Following the public response to the online memorial, and in partnership with the Daily Mail, over £2million was raised to give the Remember Me memorial a physical home within the Cathedral. Said GEZE’s National Specification Manager, Richard Richardson-Derry: ‘We were honoured to play a part in the construction of the Remember Me memorial. The combined challenges of minimising air flow, ensuring equal access and creating a beautiful structure to recognise those lives lost has been successfully achieved’.

An extension was built to create a weather break and fitted with record FTA 20 automatic folding doors which minimise the time the door is open to the elements but still provides good access. The doors are activated by a radar presence sensor for two way traffic. The old door was also replaced with a THERMCORD sliding door with energy efficient core panels to further reduce the ingress of cold air.

London Bridge Station (Network Rail)

London Bridge Station (Network Rail)

BCL Timber Projects Ltd

BCL are proud to have been a part of the team delivering the £400m redevelopment of London Bridge Station, designed by Grimshaw Architects and developed by Costain. The redeveloped station expects to see 75 million passengers pass through each year as part of the £6.5 billion Thameslink project. As part of the refurbishment the structure was replaced by pre-cast concrete bridge decks. The underside of these new decks became the ceiling which was then clad with our high performance Alpha acoustic timber panel system. The BCL “Alpha” panel system spans over 7,000 square metres of Western Red Cedar panels in three distinct patterns, providing class A and B sound absorption to reduce noise from passengers and trains. The panels are fire treated to Euro class B, fully demountable, have fully concealed fixings, and involve integrated lighting troughs. Our open configuration system allowed Grimshaw to design the unique panel composition to the highest standard. With the ability to be flexible along with outstanding acoustic performance and the standard of design and installation services, it was clear that our BCL panels should be the system of choice. There were some significant challenges with the project, not only the control of ambient sound from the passengers using the station, but also the structural reverberation produced by on average 18 trains per hour and, given its prominence, the need for upwards blast protection in the event of a terrorist threat. All challenges have been met by the BCL design, making the ceiling system the perfect solution. With the London Bridge Station redevelopment, as with every project BCL take on, our design, manufacture and installation teams provide the knowledge and skill needed to ensure the highest standard of work is achieved at every stage of the project.Client: National RailArchitect: GrimshawMain Contractor: CostainSize: 7,000m2Location: LondonCompletion: September 2016Western Red CedarAcoustic class A & B3 different slat arrangementsFully demountableBomb blast grid system (for maintain structural integrity)

The University launched ambitious new plans for a £40 million state-of-the-art Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) to facilitate the teaching of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. Our work for the project included the supply of approximately 684m2 of Soundis Absorb-R timber wall panels. The client opted for a combination of 8/3m Absorb-R WoodTec Grooved and Soundis Absorb-R WooTec Perforated 2/2/0.5 Perforated panels. This combination of the two styles creates a stylish yet elegant finish.Black panels were chosen for the walls and white panels for the railing areas, the contrast of the colours further promoting that modern style for the university. The old choice between Engineering-led functionality, and beautiful design not longer applies. Cutting-edge new technologies allow solid wood panels and multi-layer panels to be micro perforated to serve as highly effective sound absorbing cladding. Door closer air pressure and excessive smoke seal issues - how to solve?

Door closer air pressure and excessive smoke seal issues - how to solve?

Rutland

Since the Grenfell tragedy in 2016, there has been an increased focus on fire-safety compliance in all communal buildings. This focus sharpened even more when, early in 2018, the media unearthed evidence of some non-compliant products having been installed there, including internal fire doors that had been fitted without smoke seals. As a result, there has been heightened attention on every aspect of safety, not least on fire doors. Fire officers and building management personnel understandably want to ensure they have covered every possible safety angle. To this end, they are now often insisting on going beyond the specifications required by regulations. However, in trying to ensure doors provide the maximum protection against fire and smoke, another potential problem can arise that, if not addressed, can undermine those good intentions. The problem:One of our customers, a door manufacturer and installer, had recently supplied doors but then been informed by their customer that they were not successfully self-closing as they were meant to. The assumption was that the door closer was not performing correctly, so the ‘fault’ was relayed to Rutland with a request for a resolution. We agreed to visit the site swiftly to assess the situation. Our inspection found that the door closer was correctly specified for the width and weight of the door, but that the smallest possible door gaps had been specified. These, coupled with substantial smoke seals around the doors, were causing significant resistance to the doors closing. Although the resistance was due in part to the physical aspects of the small gaps and the seals, the main problem was actually the build-up of differential air pressures on either side of the doors.Given the increased focus on maximum fire defence at doorways on all new-builds and building refurbishments, this problem is arising ever more frequently. Tighter door seals have the effect of creating separate, near air-tight pockets within a building, each holding air at slightly different pressures. The bigger the building, the more such pockets and the greater the pressure differentials that can potentially build up.These pressure differentials can have a significant additional effect on the amount of force needed to close each door and must be taken into account when choosing and setting closers. The Rutland response:Rutland’s technical team attended the site as required to support the customer in achieving a solution, first to identify the issues with air pressures and then recommend and implement a solution to the problem.Initially, we made hinge and latch adjustments to the door sets to overcome some of the resistance. This proved to be insufficient to ensure all the doors correctly closed first time, so we advised upgrading to stronger door closers. This recommendation was supported by supplying the door manufacturer with relevant data from previous tests on an equivalent door set to verify the product’s suitability. The new closers were delivered to the site and our technical team remained on hand to provide extensive assistance with the installation. Rutland created a bespoke jig to aid the door manufacturer’s installers in fitting the replacement door closers, significantly cutting down the time it took to rectify the problem.Outcome and key learning points:The project was successfully brought back on track, to the full satisfaction of the property owner and the door set manufacturer. All doors now function as they should and are delivering the intended fire safety for all building occupants. This case highlights that, due to heightened protective sealing around doors, there is an increasing likelihood of air locks forming in buildings, which means that specifying of door closers cannot be based simply on weight and width of doors, as has traditionally been the case. The pressure differentials that result vary building by building, based on each one’s layout, so it necessitates careful assessment to ensure that appropriate closers are specified.

Heavy duty hinge Wash basin SolutionPROBLEMKey IssuesWhen using concealed hinges on wide doors, a several hinges must be used to support the door, otherwise it will sag.Product InformationOne-touch Heavy duty concealed hinge J95— Suitable for heavy doors up to 25 kg (2 hinges) and 40 kg (3 hinges).— Can also be fitted to glass doors by using the optional glass door faceplate.— Easy, one-touch attachment and removal of the door.SOLUTIONThe SolutionThe use of high load-bearing hinges meant that even wide doors could be supported with fewer hinges.Issue of wide door saggingConcealed hinges are essential for opening and closing furniture doors. However, with wide doors, the door will often slope downward, or “sag,” unless many hinges are used. This article will explain how this problem was addressed. What causes the doors to sag in the first place? The following are some of the reasons why a door may sag:— The door is too heavy— The door is too wide— The interval between the hinges is too short— Too few hinges are usedThe common issue with all of these problems is that the hinges cannot support the weight of the door. The Powerful J95 hinge to support even the heaviest doorsThe J95 concealed hinge is an ideal solution for hanging wide doors. This is specifically due to its high load-bearing capacity: 25 kg for 2 hinges and 40 kg for 3 hinges. It is possible to support heavy doors with fewer hinges than with conventional ones.Support 800 mm wide doors with just two hinges!A luxury hotel in Korea used the J95 concealed hinge for the bathroom sink plumbing maintenance door. Due to the 800 mm width of the door, it was necessary to use at least three conventional hinges, but with the J95, only two were needed. Since only two J95 hinges are required, it creates a cleaner and more visually appealing appearance. Additionally, since the same type of maintenance door was needed throughout the hotel, using only two hinges greatly decreased the overall installation time.

However, if there’s any mildew on your garage door, scrub on a 50:50 bleach and water solution, leave it for 10 minutes, then rinse it off.If you have any polishes or waxes on your garage door, you will need to remove these too. Before moving on to the next step, ensure that your garage door is completely dry.Now it’s time to apply PolytrolA deep penetrating oil, Polytrol works by penetrating the surface of your door and re-wetting the pigments. This restores the colour that has been lost over the years, through exposure to pollution, rain and sunlight.Using a brush or a cloth and only working in sections that you can complete in 10-20 minutes, apply a liberal layer of Polytrol. As you work, if you notice any particularly matt and shiny patches, it means that the surface is absorbing Polytrol unevenly. If this happens, just move any surplus oil over to the matt areas.Allow the product to work for 10-20 minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean, lint-free cloth. If you want a shinier finish, you can also buff the surface with a lint-free cloth. It really is as simple as that…Now, you just need to leave Polytrol to dry.One of the great things about Polytrol, is that it has been designed to dry to a tough and long-lasting flexible finish but with no film, so you won’t need to worry about it peeling or flaking.Plus, Polytrol is now also available in a spray can, to make application super simple.“Couldn’t have wished for a better result”Brian informed us that he:“just chanced upon your advert while browsing the net looking for a product that would improve the look of my door, and I am so very glad that I did…”In his email, Brian also said he “couldn’t have wished for a better result”. We have to agree – his garage door has been totally transformed.

Union Industries improves efficiency with double Eiger Door installation at Taj Foods

Union Industries improves efficiency with double Eiger Door installation at Taj Foods

Union Industries

Union Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer of bespoke industrial doors, has helped food importer and distributer, Taj Foods, improve efficiency through the installation of high-speed freezer doors – the Eiger Door.Taj Foods, specialists in frozen exotic food and prepared meals, was established in 1980 and recently expanded its cold storage at its Sheffield warehouse to meet growing demand. The project undertaken by EJM refrigeration, involved improving its energy efficiency and carbon footprint with the installation of a new CO2 refrigeration system. The two Eiger Doors will enhance operational efficiency in the high-demand environment and will maintain consistent freezer temperatures, while ensuring unimpeded access to cold stores.Since its launch in 2002, the Eiger Door has been installed as a fast-access traffic door at major food retailers, 3PL cold storage and distribution, and frozen food manufacturers across the UK.The Eiger Door ensures that consistent temperatures can be maintained and features an innovative dehumidification system, which prevents snow and ice build-up on the door blade and frame. This feature tackles a consistent issue plaguing other door types, as the freezer encounters humid ambient air entering the cold store.Minimising downtime is also supported by the Eiger Door’s robust construction and its tried and tested crash-out and reset system. Due to the modest difference in size between Forklift Trucks and the door opening, as well as the busy nature of this freezer, this is of particular benefit at this depot when considering the long-term reliability of the Eiger Door.Rob Howe, Union Industries’ Technical Sales Engineer, said: “The installation of the Eiger Doors at Taj Foods showcases our commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions that prioritise efficiency and reliability.“Over the past 20 years, the Eiger Door has consistently proven to be a superior and effective innovation for cold storage access, overcoming challenges such as ice build-up and excessive energy use to maintain consistent temperatures.“We are confident that the Eiger Door will significantly contribute to Taj Foods’ operational success.”Anil Solanki, Managing Director at Taj Foods, said: “We were looking for a reliable door solution to fit in with the redevelopment of our Sheffield warehouse, and after reading about the success of the Eiger Door we approached Union Industries to assist us to improve operational efficiency as we doubled our capacity.“We believe that the advanced features of the Eiger Door will not only enhance the efficiency of our cold storage but also contribute to long-term reliability, minimising disruptions in our day-to-day operations.”

HAG Ltd. - The Door Specialists

OverviewJaguar Land Rover (JLR) is the UK’s largest car manufacturer, built around two iconic British car brands: Land Rover, the world’s leading manufacturer of premium all-wheel-drive vehicles; and Jaguar, one of the world’s premier luxury sports saloon and sports car marques. With the two brands being brought together & established as one company in 2008 by the Tata Group, the brand is not only known by consumers as a creator of luxury cars but they are also considered in the trade as a reborn company of thriving creativity and one who isn’t afraid to tear up the rule book. They were the first car manufacture to cut their third party costs by producing their own steel and in 2014 the Jaguar XR was the first vehicle in the world to use aluminium alloy grade RC5754, which contained up to 75% recycled aluminium. The much lighter body gives a far superior fuel economy and in turn reduces fuel emissions. PartnershipHaving successfully tendered for 4 new sites across the UK, HAG Ltd. specified various fire protection & security products, to not only meet the current fire & safety regulations but also to aesthetically enhance their surroundings.Several major UK construction firms were chosen to complete the new sites, however HAG Ltd. were one of a limited number of contractors that were specified on all sites. This is testament to the excellent reputation that HAG Ltd. has across the UK within the construction industry, being first choice to assist with the completion of these land mark buildings. The ProjectHAG Ltd. worked alongside market leading construction firms such as Midas Construction and MCS Group at new sites in Bristol, Northampton, Brighton & Guildford, fitting fire shutters, fire curtains & steel doors.HAG’s fire protection doors, shutters & fire curtains offer an exceptionally high standard of specification, performance and protection and are fire tested & compliant to the latest standard BS EN 16034:2014 & CE Marked to BS EN 13241-1:2003. HAG were one of the first UK companies to have their entire range tested & verified to these high standards, when the latest Government legislation changed in November 2019.JLR’s impressive new land mark buildings, often follow the Duel Arch concept, bringing together both brands, spacious showrooms, office space, significant outside & roof top parking. For example the new Guy Salmon facility in Bristol, which opened in January 2021, is vast at 72,000 sq-ft and boasts capacity for more than 400 vehicles. This development alone within the JLR brand, cost £12.3m, and it is therefore understandable that not only is it essential to meet all fire & security regulations, that also their significant investment & stock level needs the highest level of protection. The HAG steel door range includes external fire & security doors, which provide excellent fire protection & the highest level of security. These can be fitted to all external access points of the building and are used to ensure security is maintained. Our insurance certified steel doors have triple point sash locks with high security cylinders and are anti-protected to reduce risk of key copying. HAG can supply an alternative high security multi point panic hardware for fire escape situations. Our in house power coating finishes are available in a wide range of colours, which offered JLR complete control over their design and how our products were going to compliment their surroundings.‘As the Jaguar Land Rover range has evolved and grown since our Jaguar and Land Rover showrooms were established in Bristol, our sales and aftersales experience needed to evolve with them. What we’ve created with this new landmark building in Bristol is a luxurious space for our customers not just to use, but to enjoy.
