The sash windows, however, were not renovated at the time. Now Ventrolla has refurbished all sash windows at the premises with many of the sash units being totally removed and repaired.Soundproofing was a key factor in the project with residents keen to see the issue of noisy sash windows finally resolved.Ventrolla installed its unique Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) into the gap surrounding the window sashes, which then eradicates rattles and also reduces draughts and dirt ingress. Martin Northey, Project Surveyor at Collinstown Construction, which oversaw the scheme, said:“This particular project needed to be handled with the utmost of care as the residents were still occupying their homes while work took place.”“To keep things running as smoothly as possible, all communication went through liaison officers who booked appointments with the 44 residents for Ventrolla to work on their sash windows.”“We are extremely pleased with the improvements Ventrolla’s sealing system has made to the performance of the sash windows in the flats. The project ran without any hitches and all of the residents were thoroughly impressed with the final results.”With over 30 years experience, Ventrolla offers a tailored range of period window solutions. Their unique service includes draught-proofing with the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) and fitting replacement double-glazed sashes that incorporate the patented Sash Removal System (SRS) for easy painting and future maintenance. They offer complete new timber windows, secondary glazing solutions and a wide range of window hardware. CASE: Motorised and concealed blinds in every window

Blindspace

The owner of this house wanted to build a purpose-built home to meet the needs of his growing up family.  He wanted to live in the village he grew up in but at the same time it was important that the design embraced new concepts and ideas. The end result is a stunning contemporary luxury home that incorporates large glazing areas throughout. There has been a careful use of traditional stone, wood and also unique metal cladding detail with the external design. Internally the feeling throughout is minimalistic clean lines, with the furniture being a perfect complement to the end result. With the exception of the switchable privacy glass for the window adjacent to the front door, the inclusion of completely concealed fully automated blinds to all other windows are the ’Grand Finale’ to this beautiful home.  When not required the blinds are completely concealed but at the press of a button or using their mobile devices, blinds appear as required – providing shading, sun protection, privacy or blackout blinds as required.A feature of interest is the large gable window in the master bedroom.  Here Honeycell Duette® blinds have also been concealed within the sloping ceiling and again appear from their hiding places when required showing that irregular shaped areas can benefit from the Blindspace headboxes which can be made to conceal almost any blind available on the market.

Velfac Windows

Sector:     EducationArchitect:  Innes Associates Specified for: ·      Sustainable construction·      Inner timber frame ·      Durable external aluminium·      Design versatility·      Competitive pricingDesigned by architects Innes Associates, the latest addition to Cromer Road Primary School is a distinctive, L-shaped red-brick classroom building which wraps around a newly landscaped play space. VELFAC slim-framed windows and doors are a key feature of every facade, with dark grey external frames emphasising the pattern of shadows created by textured brickwork and inset window apertures. The VELFAC system has also helped architect Corrie Rounding meet challenging regulatory and sustainability targets while maximising usable space, increasing natural light and improving ventilation. ‘We pushed the contractor to specify VELFAC as we knew the composite frame was the right fit for the Cromer Road project,’ says Corrie. ‘The sustainability of the VELFAC system, and its low energy performance, met Department of Education requirements, while the robust external aluminium frame is ideal for a busy school environment. The design of the windows and doors also met our aesthetic brief, especially the inner timber frames. These are clear lacquered to emphasise the wood, provide a link with the trees surrounding the new building, and to deliver a less ‘sterile’ finish than aluminium or uPVC.’The VELFAC system could also meet key ventilation, daylighting and budget targets: ‘To manage costs, and maximise daylight in the right places, we concentrated our glazing allowance at the areas of most activity,’ explains Corrie, ‘but we also used windows to maximise the usability of the interior. For example, we used tall slim VELFAC units to illuminate the staircase but placed larger windows directly under the stairs to create an additional and useful breakout space.’The Cromer Road building is naturally ventilated, unusual for a Department for Education funded primary school project, with VELFAC units carefully configured to support an efficient flow of fresh air: ‘We wanted to make sure the building could stay comfortable without the need for mechanical cooling, even through the hottest summer,’ says Corrie. ‘This meant the placement of smaller windows on south facing facades, to manage solar gain, and the specification of multiple opening units across the building, including high level teleflex-operated lights. These are especially important in the classroom window screens where ventilation is guided by CO2 monitors.’ To ensure the security of children and staff, all windows also feature restrictors, with finger guards fitted to doors as an additional safety measure.Corrie was also pleased with the support provided by the VELFAC team, especially in the early stages: ‘VELFAC provided the estimates and performance data we needed to convince the contractor that VELFAC was the ideal solution for this project,’ she says, ‘and the school was certainly very happy with the end result’.

Rowntree House | Sash windows renovated & crafted for this Grade II listed townhouse in central YorkThe Grade II listed building, Rowntree House in York, was the birthplace of Joseph Rowntree. In 1857, George Cadbury worked there as an apprentice, where he honed his skills as a chocolatier. Property Developer and Construction company, Stonehouse, recently took responsibility for turning this once-dilapidated building into eight luxury apartments. And, with such a rich and important heritage, it was key that any work carried out as part of the project was completed to the highest quality – including the sash windows which form an important part of the building façade on the streets of York.Ventrolla were contacted by Stonehouse to survey more than 30 windows in this spectacular property, with a view to repairing and replacing the sash windows and casements windows as part of a sympathetic renovation in York.Stonehouse were keen that this exciting project would retain as many original features as possible, blending them with a luxurious and contemporary fit-out. So, modernising the windows in terms of finish, energy efficiency and warmth was a must.On-trend interiors form part of the luxury apartments at Rowntree HouseCompleting the renovation of Rowntree House was a labour of love for all involved – due to the careful preservation of as many windows as possible, and the meticulous crafting of new windows in line with the Listed Building Consent. The team at Stonehouse worked closely with the Rowntree Society to ensure the renovation was appropriate. We restored and repaired a large number of sash, casement and bay windows, integrating our innovative Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) to ensure draughts were eliminated, and our Sash Removal System, to make it easier for windows to be decorated and repaired in the future. A number of window sills were replaced and hardware was upgraded, too – in antique brass and chrome finishes, to meet the specification.“Rowntree House was a very challenging project, due to the scale and detail involved, but also immensely satisfying. We have all played our part in breathing life back into this building, which is pivotal to the history of York. The team at Ventrolla played an integral role to this transformation, combing meticulous attention to detail with their unrivalled expertise in restoring and replacing timber windows. We’re very proud of the finished project.” – Steve Waugh, Managing Director & Founder, StonehouseYou can read more about the work that Stonehouse do on their website – https://stonehouseprojects.co.uk/Can we help with your period window or door project? If you have a wooden window or door project to tackle, either residential or commercial, you can find out more about our renovation services and speak to a member of our team on 0800 0277 454 or by contacting us online.

Bishops Avenue - Tilt and Turn Windows in a new development

Gowercroft Joinery Limited

Tilt and Turn Windows in a new developmentGowercroft's expertise shines through in their remarkable tilt and turn windows project on Bishops Avenue, London, known as "Billionaires Row." Overcoming technical challenges with meticulous attention to detail, Gowercroft delivered high-quality windows and sliding doors, elevating the new build project to a regal level.Gowercroft products used:Kedleston Tilt and TurnPeveril Lift and SlideAccoya®The Advantages of Tilt and Turn Windows:Tilt and turn windows, popular in continental Europe, are particularly suitable for large residential and commercial buildings. These windows have both vertical and horizontal hinges, allowing them to function like regular casement windows when opened horizontally. When opened vertically, they provide excellent ventilation while maintaining optimal security, as the opening mechanism remains inaccessible from the outside. Tilt and turn windows also feature multiple locking points for enhanced security when closed.Overcoming Technical Challenges:The architect initially specified standard casement windows for the property, which featured large sliding doors. However, Gowercroft recommended installing tilt and turn systems instead to better suit the building's style. The challenge arose due to the height of some window units exceeding 2 meters, placing significant stress on the hinges and mechanisms. Gowercroft's technical director, David Brown, conducted extensive research to identify the best gearing and specially designed frames to withstand these increased stresses.A Testament to Exceptional Craftsmanship:Gowercroft's bespoke tilt and turn units outperformed those of other companies in terms of functionality, aesthetics, and projected longevity. The windows, doors, and joinery at Bishops Avenue were meticulously crafted in American Black Walnut with bronze inlays and accessories, resulting in a tasteful and luxurious finish.Extensive Installation and Impeccable Functionality:The project involved the creation and installation of over 200 windows and doors, internal door sets, architraves, staircases, rails, furniture, and skirting boards, amounting to almost 2 years of dedicated work. Completed in 2008, the multifunctional window and door units remain fully operational, a testament to their exceptional quality and longevity. Gowercroft continues to maintain and service the tilt and turn windows at 49 Bishops Avenue, ensuring their optimal functionality and eliminating the need for customer maintenance.Testimonial from Barry Glantz, WillowAcre Investments & Developments Ltd:Barry Glantz, of WillowAcre Investments & Developments Ltd, praises Gowercroft for their commitment to quality and professionalism, recommending them without hesitation. Glantz highlights Gowercroft as a company that goes the extra mile, adding value to every project.Elevate your architectural designs with Gowercroft's tilt and turn windows, exemplifying excellence, durability, and functionality. Sash Window Renovation at Grade II Listed Chester Railway StationThe period windows of the historic Chester Railway Station have undergone significant refurbishment as part of a £10 million renovation effort to restore the Grade II listed railway station, part of the Chester Renaissance programme. The sash windows dating back to 1848 have been restored by leading period window specialist Ventrolla.Having deteriorated over time, several sashes needed a complete renovation to improve the facilities in the Arriva Training Room and Medical Room as they were experiencing troublesome draughts, leaks, rattles and operational issues.Due to the historical nature of the building it, was imperative that the new sash windows retained the heritage without compromising on quality.THE PROJECT WORKSThe unique Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) was installed to combat draughts and reduce external noise. As part of the sash window repair, the sash cords were replaced, pulleys serviced and sashes correctly balanced to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the windows. The project was completed in two phases, both being done through the weekend so as to minimise commuter disruption. The original curved window located in the Training Room was given a complete overhaul, replacing the single-glazed panels with bespoke slim double-glazed units. On completion of this, the two large curved windows of the Medical Room were also fitted with double-glazed units using traditional methods of carpentry to retain the aesthetic features of the building.Gareth Ellis, Site Manager from MPH Construction, who oversaw the project, said:“The work that Ventrolla did was very impressive. The craftsmen were professional and efficient, completing the work promptly and delivering a superb finish.”“An unexpected benefit was the reduction in external noise, which due to the station’s high footfall can often lead to disruption and distraction for the staff when dealing with important matters.”DO YOU HAVE A SASH WINDOW PROJECT YOU NEED HELP WITH?Whether that’s your own home or a commercial project you’re tendering for, with almost 40 years’ experience, Ventrolla offers a tailored range of period window solutions including repair and renovation, new timber windows, double glazing, secondary glazing and a wide range of window hardware. Our head office is based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, with regional offices located throughout the UK and Ireland. You can contact our helpful team today on our website, by emailng info@ventrolla.co.uk or calling 0800 0277 454.

Ventrolla Sash Window Specialists

Sash Window Renovation At An Iconic Commercial Listed Building In Cardiff: The Bank, Bute StreetCardiff based property developers, Quin & Co, approached Ventrolla to carry out a survey on 66 sash windows, as part of their renovation of The Bank. Originally built by The Cory Brothers in 1874, the property was to be transformed into 15 luxury two-bedroom apartments and a breath taking penthouse.Work on this Grade 2 Listed building – located on Bute Street in Cardiff – required expert, sympathetic and careful crafting of replacement timber sash windows, to maintain the listed elements and retain the character of the historically-important building. Our expertise in creating bespoke wooden sash windows for Listed Buildings, coupled with our experience on commercial projects, made us a perfect partner.Following a detailed technical site survey of the north and east elevations of the building, our team noticed that there were two different horn details on the two different elevations. Guided by us, the client decided to opt for one style throughout. We then created CAD scale drawings of all different window types, to ease the client through the planning process and Listed Building Consent (LBC).Due to the building being on a busy road, the planning application included a road traffic noise condition, requiring acoustic glazing to be fitted into the new windows. We were able to offer the client a range of glazing options for them to choose from, to meet the required specification. From the removal of old sashes to the manufacturing and installing of like-for-like replica hardwood sashes, this was a complex yet very satisfying project to be involved in. Each sash incorporated slim, heritage double-glazing for improved efficiency, as well as our innovative Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System, to create apartments that were warm and cosy. Integrating our clever sash removal system (SRS) in every window also ensured that future maintenance, redecoration, or repairs will be easy to carry out. All windows were finished with satin nickel hardware throughout to create a high-end look and feel – all part of the overall design detail of this stunning renovation.John Pinn, Director of Quinn & Co. said:"On a project of this scale, it’s of vital importance that we can work with suppliers who we can completely rely on as experts in their field. Ventrolla’s highly skilled craftsmanship, Listed Building expertise and attention to detail ensured that the work ran smoothly. We’re delighted with the windows in The Bank – they match the overall high-end finish of our project, and we know that the heritage of this iconic building has been preserved for generations to come."Since completing the renovation at The Bank, Ventrolla have worked with developers Quinn & Co. on another project, also within the Cardiff area – more to follow on that project soon!If you’d like to discuss your timber window project in detail, contact us below or call 0800 0277 454 to speak to our team.

Heighington Hall | Helping To Restore A Grade II* Listed HomeMr & Mrs Anderson’s period home had some sash windows and a period door that were cold and draughty, and some windows that were completely stuck shut. But as the owner of a stunning Grade II* Listed property in Heighington, Darlington, they were only too aware of their responsibility to protect their home’s heritage. So, when they saw Ventrolla recommended by Sarah Beeny on the television about her home, Rise Hall, they got in touch. This was back in 2017, and we’ve continued to work on their beautiful house ever since, phasing the work over the past five years.Phase oneThe first project we completed was for the sash windows in two of the bedrooms. Both were sealed shut, so following a survey, we completed renovation works including sill repair and replacement, incorporating our innovative Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System to eliminate draughts, and our Sash Removal System (SRS), so that any future decorating or repairs could be completed effortlessly. Both windows were completed with antique brass hardware, to complement existing fittings in the property.Phase twoIn 2018, The Anderson’s contacted us again. This time to complete work on their master bedroom window. This 6 by 6 pane Georgian sash window required extensive repair work, rail and sill replacement, and again we incorporated our unique draught-proofing and SRS systems. We also surveyed a pair of French doors for restoration – in the end, Mr & Mrs Anderson decided that they would prefer replacement doors made, rather than repairs carried out. As these were an exact, like-for-like replica of the existing doors in their home, Listed Building Consent wasn’t required. We crafted stunning timber French doors to mirror the originals, creating a seamless look and feel – including glass specially chosen to blend strength with the subtly ‘distorted’ look of old, heritage glazing.Following the works carried out, Mrs Anderson went on to review Ventrolla on independent review website, Trustpilot, rating Ventrolla 5-stars and commenting:“Excellent workmen. Pleased with product and will recommend.”Ventrolla replicated the existing Georgian timber doors, hand crafting new versions in their workshop.Phase threeWe were delighted to hear from The Anderson’s again in 2019 – and undertook restoration work on two of the property’s dining room windows. A complex project, due to foliage on the exterior restricting access, our team worked to release stuck sashes and restore them to their former glory. The works in this phase also included new joinery elements – replicating the existing single-glazed sashes with new versions, hand crafted by Ventrolla, in their Harrogate workshop.Phase fourMost recently, this year we were brought in to help Mr & Mrs Anderson again – to refurbish, draught-proof and craft new sashes for a sash window in a bathroom. Repairing the sash box and providing replacement sashes, we completed the window works with polished brass hardware.Mrs Anderson commented:“Once again, I was very pleased with all aspects of Ventrolla’s work. The team were reliable, polite and tidy – and my new windows look excellent. They’ve made the room warmer and less draughty.”Heighington Hall was thought to have been built in the early 17th century, and the home has many stunning Georgian features of the time, such as the twelve-pane sash windows, the sandstone front exterior and detailed stonework with fluted pilasters, dosserets and a scrolled pediment around the door. It became Grade II* Listed in 1952 to preserve these iconic and historic features. Can we help with your period window or door project? If you have a wooden window or door project to tackle, or require listed building renovation advice, you can find out more about our renovation services and speak to a member of our team on 0800 0277 454 or by contacting us here.

As part of the scope of works, the sash windows were surveyed, renovated, draught-proofed and had new ironmongery fitted.Ventrolla’s window restoration formed part of a larger refurbishment scheme at St Leonard’s which was implemented by Castons of Ipswich and lasted six months. The Grade II Listed hospital building dates back to 1866 and by 1872 had been extended to provide beds for 503 patients. It played an important role during the Second World War caring for air raid casualties and suffered bomb damage itself in 1941. Corten Steel Louvres chosen to match Heritage Site

Lang+Fulton

Ashton Old Baths is a Grade II listed building which Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council has transformed into a business hub and data centre; an idea for heritage sites which could be transferred to many other ‘at risk’ buildings. The primary concern for the project was to create a sympathetic dialogue between the historic and the modern.Lang+Fulton were approached by the architect to provide an appropriate solution for a compound to surround and screen the unsightly sub-station, data centre generators, and cooling plant that were required to service the new complex. Their Corten louvre, made from weathering steel was selected to match the tonal qualities of the original red brick façade of the Victorian bath house and preserve the sensitive context of the site. The Italia-Corten panels sit between an expressed steel framework, which was hot-dip galvanized before polyester powder coating in a dark grey to reference the regeneration of the site to the area’s industrial past. The continuous structure creates 80% visual screening and the robust steel louvres provide excellent security. The compound was supplied with double-leaf and tri-fold gates to provide the required access.

Street furniture rusting steel planters

Powdertech (Corby) Ltd

A major urban regeneration programme to revive a neglected area within the town centre, creating a vibrant community of shops, workplaces, and open spaces.Striking a balance between modern facilities and historic features was at the heart of the design brief, particularly referencing the industrial heritage. In former times this town played a major role in establishing the UK shoe industry Street furniture is throughout the re-development for which the architect decided to use premium powder-coated galvanized steel, delivering both visual appeal and high levels of resistance required within a heavy footfall outdoor environment. Rust-effect powder coat finish, ‘Sahara’ evokes the town’s manufacturing heritage that captures the look of weathered steel without the concern of staining the surrounding paving. Providing excellent weather resistance, colour stability and durability, Sahara was applied to metal planters, seating, bollards, railings and art installations. This achieves visual appeal and a fresh and bold aesthetic. The use of proven powder coating combined with galvanizing technology established in the architectural industry ensures that the street furniture will remain structurally sound and smart for many years to come. The project has achieved a key objective in attracting increased footfall in the commercial ‘sole’ of this once down-at-heel area.

Timber Window Project: Restoring Charm to a Matlock CottageDiscover how Gowercroft successfully transformed Robert Jones's quaint stone cottage in Matlock with high-quality timber windows and doors.A Challenging Derbyshire CottageWhen Robert Jones approached Gowercroft for his cottage renovation in Matlock, they faced an intriguing challenge. His 200-square-meter, 5-bedroom cottage nestled into a Derbyshire hillside, offering stunning countryside views. The property had three stories at the front but only one at the rear, with the ground floor patio situated atop an integral garage.Robert aimed to breathe new life into the neglected property by undertaking a comprehensive refit, including new electrics, bathrooms, stairs, carpets, roofing, garage, and replacement doors and windows. He sought a renovation that honoured the local aesthetics, using durable traditional materials like English slate for the roof and energy-efficient timber windows and patio doors to maximise the scenic vistas.Meeting the ChallengeAccess to the property posed a considerable challenge due to its location on a sharp bend with a steep incline at the end of a winding country road. The installation of oversized windows and doors seemed daunting, but Gowercroft embraced the challenges with creative solutions.Gowercroft crafted and installed eleven Hardwick flush casement windows, a Peveril lift and slide patio door, two floor-to-ceiling fixed light windows, an Accoya® front door, and a timber Melbourne stable door at the side. The lift and slide patio doors and glazed screens had to feature 6mm-thick glass to ensure structural integrity, making each unit weigh approximately 200 kilograms.Given the size and weight of the units, manual handling was impractical. Gowercroft enlisted a specialist contractor with a telehandler to navigate the steep drive and hoist the units into place. Additional personnel joined the effort."The job demanded teamwork, meticulous planning, and coordination with the ongoing building work as we removed the old windows and adjusted the existing openings," Robert explained.Exceeding ExpectationsThroughout the installation, unforeseen challenges arose, including the need to cut away patio paving slabs blocking the original patio doors and repositioning the door frame to accommodate the new Accoya® front door. Gowercroft even provided window boards for the new openings.Robert praised the Gowercroft team for their exceptional dedication and problem-solving attitude, stating, "I can't speak highly enough of the Gowercroft team. They tackled every obstacle and challenge with a 'can-do' spirit."Gowercroft's commitment to quality craftsmanship and their ability to navigate complex installations allowed Robert Jones to transform his Matlock cottage into a charming and energy-efficient retreat that perfectly complements its picturesque surroundings.

The winning design was created by Sir Arnold Thornley and F.B Hobbs in collaboration with Briggs and Wolstenholme. The building has also had more than its fair share of fame, being used as a film set in several productions, including The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes & Foyles War (TV series).Ventrolla offers a bespoke renovation service for timber sliding sash and casement windows as well as timber doors. Ventrolla has its central office in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, with additional offices throughout the UK and Ireland.
