THE PROJECT: Recticel supplied the high-performance thermal solution to transform a 100-year-old property in Moseley, Birmingham. Divided into nine apartments, in which two were refurbished to create one, two-storey home, the project caught the attention of the producers of Channel Four's Old House to New Home. Connecting a ground floor property to a flat above led to the creation of a modern and stylish home trimmed with decorative reminders of its structural origins.THE SOLUTION: Eurothane® GP, a high-performance rigid PIR foam board, was selected for the new home's pitched roof, framed wall and floor. Eurothane PL, Recticel's insulation and plasterboard solution was fitted to the property's existing, cavity-less, nine-inch exterior brick walls. The well-sized board ensures minimal thermal bridging during construction.Coupled with Eurothane® GP's 0.022W/mK low thermal conductivity, these products were crucial to attaining a good U-value rating. BackgroundThackley Primary School in Bradford is a well-established suburban school providing education for children aged 3-11. The school’s positive ethos seeks to provide a happy and active environment for learning, with teachers and staff dedicated to working hard to secure the highest educational standards for their pupils. With more than 450 pupils, the building can become extremely busy during school hours, both in classrooms and communal areas. That was presenting some challenges in terms of acoustics in certain areas of the school, particularly in its multi-use hall which is used for performances, PE lessons and dining.ProblemThackley Primary School’s multi-use hall is a large, open plan room which, like many internal environments of this type, features extensive areas of hard, reflective surfaces. When the room was in use, particularly when occupied by a large number of pupils and staff, excessive reverberation and echo was making it an unpleasant acoustic environment.Head of the School, Annette Patterson, sought to find a solution to these issues and approached Sound Reduction Systems (SRS) given the company’s experience in resolving these types of acoustic problems in schools. At the initial enquiry stage, Annette provided details about the school hall, including dimensions and photographs, from which the SRS technical department was able to model the space using their acoustic software. This enabled the team to propose a provisional solution with a specification and provide a quote. Once the proposed solution was agreed in principle, an acoustics specialist from SRS visited the school to take detailed measurements and discuss the various options available to arrive at a detailed specification.SolutionImmediately on receipt of Annette’s request for help addressing this acoustic issue, the SRS team confirmed reverberation was indeed excessive and reducing it would make a huge difference. SRS Director, Alex Docherty, commented:“As soon as I was shown into the hall, it was clear that the acoustic environment was not ideal – the long reverberation time made it difficult to hold a simple conversation between a few people comfortably, let alone when the hall was full of children. It was clear that a treatment using one of our Class A rated Sonata products was required to solve the issue.”Prior to any improvements, the estimated mid-frequency reverberation time was recorded at (Tmf) 3.57s. This level is considered excessive for a room of this nature. SRS calculated that 75sqm of their decorative Sonata panel absorbers would be required to solve the problem, bringing the reverberation time down to (Tmf) 1.13s.SRS provided the school with a layout design detailing where the panels would be installed within the hall. The roof contributed towards requirements under National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) Chapter 11: Conserving and enhancing the natural environment and The London Plan 2011 Policy 5.2 – Minimising Carbon Dioxide Emissions, Policy 5.3 – Sustainable Design and Construction and Policy 5.7 – Renewable Energy. Shelter for waiting passengers was part of the plan. Uniquely it had to fit in with the wider design themes of the development and deliver on the University’s sustainability goals by utilising solar technology. To meet those requirements Able Canopies created a bespoke canopy design based on our stylish Kensington system. The addition of solar panels, effective drainage, plus seating and under canopy wind protection, were all elements that the adaptable Kensington can handle. The result was a standout look for a practical transport hub that provides effective weather protection and longer term pay back via renewable energy generation.Growth at Bournemouth UniversityThe new Talbot Campus development at Bournemouth University is an important and prestigious project, not just for the University but for the local area which benefits from the success of the University and its students. The £3 million investment in new campus buildings and other infrastructure is a long-term commitment that will see the University widen its learning provision and all-round facilities. Part of the benefit for students, and the wider Bournemouth area, is the construction of a new transport hub that will provide joined up public transport connecting the University campus to Bournemouth itself.  A key part of the new transport hub is the weather protection provided to passengers as they wait for buses. To ensure that this essential part of the development met the standards required of the project Able Canopies entered early design discussions with the University. This evolved and in April 2017 Mildren Construction awarded Able Canopies the works for the new bus hub.Project Proposal & InstallationThroughout the development and design process we thought that our Kensington Dual pitch would be the ideal product for this installation. The more the design developed and requirements were added, such as the solar roof panels, the more convinced we were that it was perfect for the client’s needs. The Kensington is a robust, steel frame system that will stand up to all that the weather has to throw at it. Its architectural good looks mean that it makes a strong aesthetic statement, which was a key requirement here. We worked closely with the solar panel provider Polysolar who had overall control of the installation. Their panel fitted perfectly into the Kensington roof with some minor alterations to our working method to provide clean, efficient and sustainable energy for the transport hub. In addition, we had to consider how all cables were concealed and accessed at later dates. To achieve this access panels were installed in the 2 higher posts, one dealt with DC cables from the solar panels and the other with AC cables for the lighting. The final 2 lower posts on each canopy were designed to be integral rain water pipes and dispersed all water from the roof into a drainage connection below the paving.The Finished CanopiesAs the images show, the canopies look great and they are doing their job effectively in the transport hub which is now up and running. Style’s UK-wide aftercare and service team has come to the rescue of a Midlands school whose moveable wall hadn’t been working for a number of years. At 50 years old, and made from timber, the school’s concern was that it would have to be replaced. But Style’s technicians diagnosed that the problem was with the rollers along the bottom – many of which had seized due to old age and a lack of regular servicing. After making 8 bespoke new rollers the Style team returned to the school to fit them,saving the school considerable expenditure.

Transforming the old stone barns at Davey’s Farm was a major undertaking.To make the aging structures fit for twenty-first century living, the builders had to embark on a thorough-going renovation project.But they had to do it in a way that preserved the traditional, rural character that made the site so desirable in the first place.When it came to the roofing, that meant identifying a material that could blend seamlessly with that rustic, natural aesthetic, while offering outstanding weather resistance, longevity and consistency of supply.SSQ’s Del Prado natural slate provided the answer.

The Milton Keynes Hospital Paediatric Emergency Department was undergoing a refurbishment. The overall aim was to create a child-friendly environment that would appeal to children of all ages. AD Architects designed the new unit and chose Altro Orchestra to create two colourful, reception play areas. The variety of different shades and textures gave scope for an enchanted woodland forest theme to be created using Altro Orchestra throughout. Altro Suprema safety flooring was also fitted in the new unit’s observation areas, treatment bays and examination rooms.

The Royal Voluntary Service Hertford branch wanted to provide a lunch club to bring older people together to enjoy a hot nutritious meal and socialise with friends at the same time. The room to be used for the club was not fit for purpose. Altro donated floors and walls to transform the room to create a warm and welcoming environment. Altro Wood Safety Comfort was used for the floor to provide a good aesthetic and easy to clean floor. Altro Whiterock White was used to provide a smooth, easy to clean surface that is impact resistant and reduces maintenance costs.

In Manhattan Loft gardens, they have a dry install system and are going to use the recommended system from Sika, then fit the floor fully bonded with our SW890 adhesive. Installation and site visits are part of our service. With large residential tower developments, there will normally be slabs for each floor. These will take at least two years to dry out completely. This means that unless the slabs have a DPM applied there will always be a chance of moisture affecting whatever is laid on the floor be it a cradle system or dry install underfloor heating system.

Spitbank Fort was originally built in 1878 and was part of a group of forts designed to defend the mouth of the Solent. This project created challenging circumstances for wood flooring because the structure is metal and is over 130 years old. Surrounded by sea creating high, fluctuating humidity and the structure was round so most of the boards had to be re-manufactured to fit. There were height restrictions because there were numerous arches creating low points and all the services had to be laid on the existing substrate thus raising the finished floor level to accommodate them

SAS International supplied 1,200m2 of sophisticated metal ceilings and acoustic baffles to complement the building’s sustainable design. As a linear design is prominent in the lobbies and in hallways, SAS750 battens were chosen for their ability to run the length of the corridor, opening up the space. A high level of sound absorption was required in the main lobby, SAS500 baffles were selected to meet both the architect’s aesthetic vision as well as acoustic performance requirements. In the main breakout area SAS740 baffles fitted the curve of the space, achieving the multiple radii required within the area.

A rapid solution was required for Billingsgate Market - the UK's largest inland fish market - that was fit for purpose, exceptionally durable and would not disrupt daily operations. The project involved supplying Sherwin-Williams FasTop TG69 flooring to the 13 acre ground floor of the self-contained market complex, which comprises of 98 stands and 30 shops. The solution had to be food-safe with outstanding wearing properties. A decade after it was installed , the flooring has stood the test of time and is a testament to why FasTop is widely used in the food and drinks sector.

The new Costco warehouse in Farnborough is just one of 45 being built across the country by the leading wholesale giant as part of its UK expansion plans. A Sika Sarnafil waterproofing system has proved to be the perfect fit for the new 12,000sq m Costco warehouse. The size of the project and the quick installation time required resulted in the specification of the Sika Sarnafil S327-18EL membrane in Light Grey. Ideal for the job, the system is formulated for direct exposure to weather and is produced with integral polyester scrim reinforcement for high strength.

The technical team at Lochrin Bain were approached by an existing client looking to secure a new bulk storage centre located outwith their current secure facility. The global Defence, Aerospace and Security company having worked with Lochrin Bain on previous retro-fit and new build projects, instructed the design house and main contractor Wates Construction of their approved specification with the clients Security Manager opting for Lochrin Bain’s patented High Security Combi™ fencing over a traditional Palisade or Mesh alternatives.

Furnitubes designed and manufactured a number of AKRI retaining steel wall planters with ped and tray system for rooftop scheme in in Bexleyheath, south London. AKRI’s unique ped and tray system allows the planters to be left freestanding, sitting on a layer of waterproof membrane. Decking and pergolas were installed and benches were later retro-fitted to the planters to seamlessly integrate seating, manufactured in all steel to accommodate the required A fire rating, creating stunning landscaped roof tops across both buildings in the heart of a bustling city.

The main auditorium of the Theatre has been refurbished with 900 new seats, sound desks and lighting systems, as well as the installation of a café, licensed bar and TV gallery. The foyer, studio theatre and entrance areas have been modernised. As part of the project, Gradus was chosen to supply and fit continuity LED step lighting to provide a contemporary linear effect and complement the new modern interior of the theatre. Not only does step lighting add to the design, but it also allows customers and staff to move around safely in darkened lighting conditions.

The manufacture and installation of the 300 Optima casement windows was awarded to longstanding Profile 22 Approved Window Contractor Select Windows. The project was part of the Nehemiah Housing Project, which is designed to build successful, sustainable and diverse communities by providing housing in a culturally sensitive way to their tenants. Profile 22’s Optima system fitted the bill perfectly. It is an award-winning 70mm system that delivers superior thermal efficiency thanks to features such as a 6-chambered outerframe and 5-chambered sash and unique innovations such as additional centre seals.

To maximise animal health and performance at Knaptoft Farm, near Lutterworth, Eternit fibre cement roofing sheets were specified for all livestock buildings, due to the high levels of insulation and vapour permeability that they provide. As a local councillor, farm owner Neville Hall was also acutely aware of the visual impact that his new buildings would have and wanted the site to fit in well with the local countryside. To ensure this, he specified Eternit Profile 6 in Farmscape Anthracite and is very happy with the building’s final appearance.

We supplied and fitted a combination of Wall Protection solutions at St Ninian’s High School in East Renfrewshire, reducing the impact of scuffs and scrapes in the school’s corridors, improving its internal appearance and enhancing the environment. “We were looking for a way to deal with wear and tear and how to keep the school in pristine condition, particularly after the refurbishment of certain areas,” explains Anne O’Neill, Business Support Manager at St Ninian’s. “It was clear that a new approach was needed, so we contacted Gradus about their wall protection solutions.”

When St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff instigated a recent project to fit-out a new gallery, they needed a flooring innovation that was not only durable but would also look stunning and stand the test of time.Specifying 190m2 of Gerflor’s Attraction® range of fast track flooring in ‘Paraiba’, enabled the museums budgets to work hard for them as they needed a flooring product that was going to be durable over the long term, coping with the processes of exhibition installation and take down, and the daily use of the gallery by a stream of high volumes of visitors.

12 of Howe Green’s 7500 Series floor access covers have been fitted internally and externally at the domestic section of Ebbsfleet International Station. A robust access solution was required to provide easy and safe access to vital internal underfloor services in the station building. The access covers were tailor made to the sizes required. Set into the substrate, the access covers sit flush with the flooring and do not present a trip hazard. They can be easily removed with the use of lifting keys or a Howe Green Cover Skate.

After working with Accord Hospice for many years, they came to us straight away when they got funding for a new 8-bed inpatient unit refurbishment. We brought some of their team to our private showroom to go through the product range and take a closer look at certain items they were interested in. A Howe Green 5000 Series Aluminium Access Cover was supplied to The Fish & Chip Shop in Islington. An unobtrusive access solution was required to cover the kitchen’s essential mains drainage services and provide fast access to them for easy maintenance. The access cover was fitted into quarry-tiled steps leading to the kitchen. It was designed to be virtually invisible to prevent any slips or trips – essential within a busy restaurant environment. The cover is double-sealed which means water or bacteria ingress is preventable ensuring that the highest hygiene standards can be maintained.

The joiner for this coastal house in southern England decided upon a Moralt FERRO doorkit as the basis for the new front door. Using a 78mm thick FERRO KlassikPlus this east- facing external doorset offers absolute security against the rigours of the high winds, changeable weather and salty sea air as well as the direct morning sunlight. The bright red colour was chosen to give the house a sunny disposition and adds to the beach character. The style of door was chosen to fit in with the Edwardian era build of the house, which is over 100 years old.

Tasked with specifying a signature element for Nudo Sushi Box, leading fit-out manufacturer Swandene Specialist Contract Interiors looked to Karndean Designflooring for its inspiration. Looking to achieve an eye-catching design to take forward as part of the roll out to other locations, Swandene opted for a striking chevron design using two contrasting wood designs from Karndean’s Opus collection. The statement design showcases the cool, grey wash hues of Grano (WP311) against the rustic timber effect of Ignea (WP313).

The washrooms in a West London School were in need of refurbishment. They took the opportunity to completely rethink the use of space and had a more modern, fresh look in mind for the Key Stage 1 & 2 school washrooms, and the Franke Washino range fitted perfectly with the scheme. Franke’s Washino wash and play trough (SANW215P) were used instead of traditional washbasins. The Washino range is ergonomically designed to allow children to get closer to the taps, and the playful wave and pleasant warm surface of the Miranit troughs are a temptation for children to wash their hands.

The Grid is a four-storey project in Leeds, it consists of 11 apartments housing 38 beds with a cycle store, gym and laundry facilities. Its modern approach to design fits the aesthetic choices of university students while landscaped grounds offer an area of calm with limited parking for each flat.The Grid makes perfect use of Carlton’s Wolds Minster Blend and its internal contemporary leanings. The dark orange, red, purple and brown bricks create a harmonious visual synergy with the ageing brickwork in the surrounding area.

Lifting platforms integrated flush within the remaining gym area and colourised to highlight drop area.“We recently installed Pliteq flooring in our brand new Meadowbank facility. The product is top quality and the noise dampening in our free weights area is great. The noise from dropping weights is completely minimised making the experience of other users more enjoyable. There is also no reverb heard or felt in other rooms nearby.”

The waiting room at Houton Pier on The Mainland of the Orkney Islands was cold and draughty due to a weather-damaged door opening directly into the waiting area. An extension was built to create a weather break and fitted with record FTA 20 automatic folding doors which minimise the time the door is open to the elements but still provides good access. The doors are activated by a radar presence sensor for two way traffic. The old door was also replaced with a THERMCORD sliding door with energy efficient core panels to further reduce the ingress of cold air.

The largest automated warehouse for online groceries in the world and renowned for its high-level distribution required robust drainage systems for their new facility. Aspen worked closely with the architect to design, manufacture and install stainless steel solutions to support the hygienic performance of the entire environment. Aspen provided engineering drawings, samples and prototypes to ensure a seamless manufacturing process and delivery of the project from day one. The kerbing was also specifically fitted and mounted onto the wall of the warehouse to offer maximum protection and to maximise cleaning efficiency of the facility.

Exterior Accoya cladding has been selected by the University of Minnesota for The Tashijan Bee Pollination Centre. Designed by Architects MSR, 8,000 square feet of Accoya Burn and Brushed Black, coated in Delta Millworks ebony SF, features on the siding of the building and was chosen due to its durability and sustainable properties. Plus, in keeping with the ecological mission of the build, Accoya was the perfect fit due to its green credentials – thereby; the building meets the National B3 Sustainability standards as well as State of Minnesota Sustainable Building 2030 requirements.

Pantheon expressed their interest in Billi which was followed by a visit to the London office of one of the Billi UK’s existing customers, Fabric Systems. To further confirm Pantheon in their thinking, they received recommendations from both, the architect practice, Perkins + Will, as well as the workplace optimization, office design and fit-out company, Maris Interiors.The selected tap was the Billi Quadra Plus 15, which combines modern, contemporary styling with market leading dispense capacity and all these features from one single under counter unit.

Our client is the owner of this superb 1930s house which is located in a suburb of Manchester. The property is currently being renovated throughout and as the old windows were no longer fit for purpose, the decision was taken to replace them with a product which looked just like the original windows, but offered a much improved specification.The Clement EB20 range of steel windows was chosen, with G+ bars and beautiful fenestra joints. The new windows are dual coloured - a dark bronze was chosen for the outside frames while white was selected for the inside to match the interior.

The architectural team at Henley College, a sixth form college in Oxfordshire, specified EB24 steel windows for the refurbishment of one of its two sites, ‘Rotherfield’. The Victorian Gothic style building had original white steel windows which after 150 years of use were no longer fit for purpose. After researching the market, EB24 was chosen as the right product to replace the existing windows due to its elegant appearance, ability to be made into beautiful patterns to match the existing windows, great security and energy performance.
