Basildon Cinema, UK

VMZINC UK

With its ten cinemas and six restaurants, the East Square leisure complex in Basildon in Essex is part of an ambitious master plan to restore the town centre’s appeal by creating daytime and evening entertainment and dining opportunities. Partly inspired by the city’s artistic past, when Basildon was known for its 1960s ceramic murals, the building also evokes the modern edge of digital images. The set of multicoloured hexagonal cassettes designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards’ architects in London evokes the shape of coloured pixels in the digital images projected on the cinema’s screens. This combination of four surface coverings - AZENGAR®, ANTHRA-ZINC®, QUARTZ-ZINC®, GOLD lacquered zinc - and two types of installation - MOZAIK® cassettes and hexagonal shingles - on some 4,000 m2 of facades creates a playful and dynamic effect. A future image is coming into view. The irregularity of the facade’s upper edge is a good illustration of the city’s urban renewal project; it seems to show that the city’s future is still being constructed and rewritten in this very place.

The Safety Letterbox Company

THE PROJECTAt The Safety Letterbox Company, we can manufacture a complete mailbox arrangement to house within the aluminium surrounds and replace a glazed screen. Panel boxes have a simple letterflap to the front face and house the mailboxes to the rear allowing the tenants ease of retrieving their mail and ensuring maximum security for the building. This arrangement complies with the Secured by Design Guidelines (Secured by Design Homes 2016 Guidelines) of eliminating the need for access into a building, even from the postman. It also is a neat solution to house the door entry system within the panel – keeping all relevant products in one area, adjacent to the door, in a neat and attractive solution. The comprehensive door entry and mailbox solution developed for the Canning Town project contained subtle mailboxes that blended in to the outside panel along with security options that granted access to the building to individuals with the correct code. The door entry system contains a video camera to identify who is outside of the building, a key fob scanning point and a room call function.

POSIglaze Privacy Glass Balcony Installation

POSIglaze Privacy Glass Balcony Installation

Pure Vista Ltd

Privacy glass on a balcony is becoming a more frequent request. This installation by AC Fabrications in Cornwall on a domestic property perfectly displays how a glass privacy screen can be used. The partially frosted glass increases privacy for those on the balcony, people at ground level will not be able to see them. The non-frosted section allows the residents to enjoy their view from the privacy of their balcony. Taller glass on one side extends the privacy even more, and also will act as a windbreak. Frameless glass balustrade is often used as a windbreak on balconies, the solid pane of glass protecting those on the balcony. The installer has used POSIglaze base fit Silver brushed channel. Designed to provide the greatest possible adjustment opportunities, this system enables each panel to be perfectly aligned during, or even after, installation. POSIglaze is the perfect choice for residential to light commercial installations where up to 1.5kN frameless glass balustrade is required. This innovative patented and market leading screw-clamp technology locks glass panels into position effortlessly, with four immobilising fasteners per meter of channel.

Canada Water Library, London

Technal

Spearheading an ambitious programme of regeneration, Canada Water Library resembles an inverted ‘ziggurat’ – a terraced pyramid of successively receding storeys – that partly overhangs the Canada Water basin. The £1.4m building sits at the edge of a civic plaza and a stretch of open water. The expanding pyramid form integrates a compact footprint at ground level with progressively wider floors above. The building is clad in light bronze anodised aluminium panels with sequined perforations, interspersed with recessed curtain wall screens. This design gives the project a sculptural appeal and a striking visual effect.Finished in bronze anodised aluminium, the structural sealant glazed facade and commercial doors were specified for the ground floor. A Visible Grid Facade has being used for the strips of curtain walling to the three upper floors, with top hung concealed vents and aluminiumdoors providing access to the balconies. The library forms part of the vibrant quayside at Canada Water - a historic Docklands that was once a bustling port. It was designed to exemplify the importance of the library, education and community facilities for local people and focus on the new phase of regeneration.

Britannia Leisure Centre – anti-climb grating crowns facade surrounding rooftop MUGA

Lang+Fulton

Britannia Leisure Centre is a new multi-sport community complex in Hackney. A key driver for the client was that the building should have a compact footprint. This was achieved by stacking the facilities, creating a rooftop MUGA with tennis courts and 5-a-side football pitches.Lang+Fulton supplied the external steel mesh panels which crown the building and provide panoramic views of London. These were made from their Terra-34 grating which features an anti-climb aperture. The tall slender panels were designed to continue the architectural theme of the building’s columns and vertical elements and were finished in a graphite grey ppc to compliment the neutral palette of stone, concrete and glass. In addition a grating screen was supplied to secure the upper levels of the stairway providing natural daylight and through visibility to the entrance atrium and cafe area. The steel grating also conformed to the requirement for material durability and low maintenance which were key specification considerations. The Britannia Leisure Centre has received multiple awards including Overall Building of the Year (New London Architecture).

CMS Danskin Acoustics

About Everyman CinemasEveryman Cinemas aim to put luxury back into the cinema experience, with sofas, in house cocktail shakers and meals eaten screenside. Their interiors draw heavily on 1960s design with classic G-plan furniture and mad men-esque mood lighting. They have a history of taking often neglected buildings and turning them into beautiful spaces to watch films. Their flagship cinema opened in 2000 in the Hampstead Theatre, which was previously threatened with closure. Today it is a vibrant space that pays homage to the notable performers Noel Coward and Jacinto Benavente who both performed there in the 1920s. They also recently took over the UKs longest running cinema in Islington, which has been in operation since 1913.About Simons GroupEveryman’s director stated ‘First and foremost, we are about doing cinema really, really well, and about getting people to fall in love with our venues’ – and their Liverpool venue is a building to fall in love with. It sits in the iconic Metquarter, which was recently revamped by the Simons Group. Originally built as the headquarters of Liverpool’s general post office, the building is reminiscent of a French 18th century design. Simons has done much to retain the charm of this iconic building, keeping the hand-carved façade and pillars. These have been in place since 1899 and were one of the only parts of the building to survive heavy bombing during the blitz. They were the work of Liverpudlian and Scottish sculptors Edward Griffiths and Willaim Bernie Rhind whose sculptures can still be seen today at war memorials across Scotland. The Everyman Cinema covers 18,000 square feet, with a further 20,000 square feet for luxury shopping and restaurants. Simons has modernised this previously neglected space, creating streets in the sky by opening up two terraces overlooking Liverpool’s town center.About CMS DanskinCMS Danskin are experts in acoustics and vibration isolation solutions. The company is best known for working on well known buildings such as the Shard and the Natural History Museum. They also have strong links to Liverpool, as they created the flooring for ‘A Hard Days Night’ – the official Beatles themed hotel. This involved the extra challenge of insulating the sound of conference rooms from the sound of raucous tribute acts and guests. The ProblemEveryman Cinemas pride themselves on providing a luxury cinema experience for their viewers. With ticket prices increasing to around £16 a time, it’s a priority that their sound is of as high quality as their cocktails and sofas. On the whole, films are getting louder which means increased vibration from screen room to screen room. The popularity of loud superhero and action movies is bad news for those wanting to enjoy a romcom or a period drama in peace. The floor specification was designed to attenuate the airborne sound created in each cinema along with isolating vibration caused from low base frequencies. The SolutionIt was important that CMS Danskin found a technique that would stop sound and vibration within the screen rooms, to avoid transmission to other cinema rooms. To do this, CMS Danskin worked with Gillieron Scott Acoustic Design. This group are experts in theatre sound insulation who have worked on the Apollo Theatre and the Theatre Royal in London. The floor system was designed with a target of 14Hz or better (lower) for the discreet floating floor pads. This system also required a 75mm airspace below the floating floor element of the cinema. The system comprised 50mm pads with 25mm timber battens to achieve the required void height and this supported three layers of cement particle board. The thickness and mass of the cement particle board and pads were designed to isolate the airborne and vibration caused by low frequency bass sound. The ResultWorking with the Dead Load and Live Load provided to CMS Danskin Acoustics, they exceeded the 14Hz goal set by the Everyman Cinema. The specific pad and spacing of pads determined by CMS Danskin Acoustic achieved 12Hz, when

Sandwiched between a retail unit and some 2000 square feet of office space, the seven storey shuttered façade reflects the historical military tailors that used to occupy this part of London. Their tailoring techniques, forms of embroidery and bronze detailed shop fronts were an inspiration for the architects Squire and Partners, whose detailed design of the bronze panelled façade, included glimpses of deep red in the shutter reveals with 45mm diameter punched holes intended to replicate the stripes on a Sergeants uniform. Fabricated on a CNC turret punch press using high grade J57S UP aluminium, the exterior featured hook on Unity rainscreen panels finished in bronze anodised and aluminium infills in a red polyester powder coating. The balcony detail was enhanced with impressive folding shutter doors designed to offer, security, shading, ventilation and noise control from the streets below. The outer skin to the shutters was finished in bronze anodised to match the exterior panels. An innovative door design was required for a new manufacturing process about to be introduced in the new Nissan battery plant manufacturing facility. Project/doors:100 Bespoke Conveyor screensThe challengeNissan required a unique door for a new production facility. The doors needed to give 60-minute fire resistance and be capable of completing up to 400,000 open/close cycles a year. Further, the doors needed to meet strict air leakage criteria and be able to withstand sudden air-pressure increases. The doors also had to interface with third-party equipment such as conveyor belt controls and fire alarms. MEGAgrip frameless glass balustrade installation for golf course in Cornwall.

St. Enodoc golf club is famous for its panoramic views, perfect lawns and luxury days out. In between the Cornish rain showers this team of Camel Glass installers managed to install the MEGAgrip frameless glass balustrade to the newly refurbished roof terrace at St Enodoc golf club. A strong glass outdoor safety barrier providing shelter from the wind to people outdoors enjoying the view of the sea and watching the golf. The customers wanted a commercial grade frameless glass balustrade with no handrails, instead of the traditional style of galvanized railing. MEGAgrip was used in this situation due to its force loading capability and ability to hold Centryglas ensuring it’s safe to use at this height and location. This MEGAgrip safety screen posed some challenges for Andrew, John and John, the installers, the heavy glass needed to be taken high in the air to reach the scaffolding platform. Using a telehandler they managed, to lift the glass safely into position. However, there was another challenge waiting, the initial installation of steel was slightly misshapen, meaning the original fitters had to return to rectify the problem and therefore delayed the glass balustrade completion.  Even so, the MEGAgrip installation was completed successfully and fulfilled the customer brief. Now, the balcony is a very enjoyable spot to sit and watch the golfers on the course.

WOODLANDS GARDEN CENTRE - AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR

WOODLANDS GARDEN CENTRE - AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR

Next Doors Ltd

In the heart of a bustling garden centre, our team was tasked with revamping the entrance to a popular cafe. The existing domestic grade UPVC door system struggled to cope with the high pedestrian traffic and lacked the necessary user-friendliness and accessibility features. To address these challenges and elevate the cafe’s entrance, we embarked on a comprehensive redesign product. Our solution revolved around the design and fabrication of a commercial-grade aluminium shop front system, meticulously crafted to cater to the diverse needs of the cafe’s customers. At the core of this system, we installed a large single sliding automatic door with integrated electronic locking and a safety pocket door, ensuring both safety and reliability. This upgrade not only facilitated seamless and quiet operation but also significantly improved accessibility, particularly for disabled visitors, while effortlessly managing the constant flow of foot traffic. In addition to functionality, aesthetics were a key consideration in our design approach. Custom graphics were incorporated into the shop front, giving the entrance a distinct company identity that resonated with the cafe’s brand. Moreover, we installed an internal dividing glazed screen to provide wind and chill resistance for diners, enhancing their overall comfort. The end result was a sleek, modern, and stylish entrance that not only addressed the cafe’s immediate needs but also positioned them for future growth and success, allowing them to easily accommodate increasing footfall and expand their business operations.

How to improve learning in the classroom with whiteboard paint

How to improve learning in the classroom with whiteboard paint

ESCREO

Today, visual learning has been recognized as the easiest way the human mind can perceive information. The more technology is developing, the more people get drawn towards the screens. While tech devices have a definite advantage in providing a highly interactive way of introducing ideas, there are also some drawbacks that most people are very familiar with. Sometimes it’s just best to use a whiteboard wall instead. When we think of a classroom we usually imagine a narrow space with a teacher podium and a wall-hung writing board. The whole attention is drawn to the front centre of the room towards a confined writing space. The teacher-student conversation is a one-sided one where students often feel pressure and inability to respond when asked to step in front of the whole class. Who likes being tested before the judging eyes of a whole room of people, anyway? Teachers understood this problem and decided to take action. Driven by the idea to bring learning closer to students, teachers from the 125th Middle School in Sofia, Bulgaria have reimagined the typical classroom with the help of a product that ESCREO has developed especially with children in mind. The school added a clear dry-erase writing space to one of the side walls of a classroom. What happened after that turned their whole teaching system upside down.
